On April 2 2021 6-year-old Corey Micciolo was taken to Southern Ocean County Medical Center in New Jersey by Christopher Gregor. Corey sadly died at 502pm, alone without his mother present. Corey had been discharged from Jersey Shore Medical Center the night before and was given a clean bill of health, bar many bruises and contusions on his body after he was abused by Gregor on a treadmill on March 20 2021. Corey was due to be interviewed on April 2 by a trained child abuse evaluator – he never made that appointment. Laura and Breanna unravel the timeline going to back to when she first met Gregor, his behaviour and the warning signs prior to sweet Corey’s death. Laura interviews Australian author and advocate Lauren Trevan about the national crises of men killing women and her book Now I See You. We recorded this episode just after the horrific Bondi attack by Joel Cauchi on April 13 2024, where he stabbed 18 people including a nine-month-old baby killing her mother, Ashlee Good, and four other women, Dawn Singleton, Jade Young, Pikria Darchia, Yixuan Cheng and one man, Faraz Tahir, who died trying to protect women. Cauchi was shot dead by a brave female Inspector from New South Wales Police, Amy Scott, who single handedly pursued him through the mall. There has been an increase in male violence to women and femicides with many Australians taking to the streets to demand urgent action to end male violence to women. The first attack known to police was the rape of a 10-year-old girl on 15 November 2001 in Ashford, Kent. When she was grabbed in broad daylight from outside a busy police-run youth club, she was told by the male attacker he would break her legs and she would be killed if she screamed. In July 2002 he attacked a 30-year-old woman in Earlswood Surrey. He attacked another woman in Surrey, another in Hertfordshire and in London. On one occasion he raped two women in the same day. Women were terrified and the police were under pressure to catch him. Laura continues her fascinating interview with Hazel Thornton who was juror #9 at the first seven-month trial in 1993. Listener discretion is advised. In this episode you will hear more detail about the horrific, insidious, cruel, and torturous abuse Lyle and Erik were subjected to by Jose Menendez. Laura and Hazel discuss the multiple forms of abuse the boys were subjected to, including coercive control and the omnipresent threat Jose Menendez posed to Lyle and Erik. It’s also important to underline that the testimonies that Lyle and Erik gave about the abuse at the first trial was totally uncontradicted and uncontroverted evidence. Laura starts a new series unravelling the murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez and speaks with Hazel Thornton, who was one of the jurors at the first seven-month trial in 1993. Jose and Kitty were shot dead on August 20, 1989, at their home in Beverly Hills. 21-year-old Lyle and 18-year-old Erik were later arrested for their parents’ murders. The dominant narrative in the media was that they were greedy, rich kids who killed their parents in cold blood for money. In this episode Laura goes behind the scenes of the trial with Hazel, who shares why the narrative didn’t make sense at the trial and why she didn’t believe that Lyle and Erik killed their parents for money. Both brothers went on trial at the same time for murdering their parents, albeit each brother had their own jury. Hazel sat on the jury for Erik Menendez. Each jury deliberated separately, and each jury resulted in a deadlock. Hazel explains what was going on between the 6 men and 6 women on her jury having heard the 51 witnesses who gave evidence about the insidious, cruel, and torturous abuse the boys were subjected to by Jose Menendez. The same judge, Judge Stanley Weisberg presided over the second trial which began in October 1995. This time around Judge Weisberg changed the rules and decided there would be no cameras in court. David Conn, on behalf of the prosecution, asked the judge not to allow the sexual abuse history and so Judge Weisberg limited the witnesses that the defense could call and via a last-minute ruling refused to allow the imperfect self-defense theory. In closing, Conn, told the jury that the ‘abuse is a total fabrication’, that they had heard no evidence of the abuse and it was the ‘silliest story ever told in a courtroom.’ He said it was the perfect example of the ‘abuse excuse.’ The jury found Lyle and Erik guilty of murder and they were sentenced to life without parole. Lyle and Erik have been in prison for 33 years.
