Laura interviews Kerri Rawson, survivor, advocate, New York Times bestselling author and daughter of serial killer Dennis Rader, who gave himself a horrific moniker due to how he bound, tortured, and killed his victims. On Friday 14th July, 59-year-old husband and father of two, Rex Heuermann, was charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman. Their remains were discovered within a quarter of a mile of one another covered in burlap along Ocean Parkway on Long Island’s South Shore in 2010. Heuermann is also suspected of other murders including Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Kerri’s father Dennis Rader was 59, the president of the church, and married with two children when he was arrested in 2005. He was later charged with the murders of 10 people in Wichita and Park City, Kansas between 1974 and 1991. He is suspected of others. Rader centered himself in the Gilgo Beach Murders on Friday 21 July, writing a letter to Fox News Digital laying out similarities between himself and Rex Heuermann. Laura believes men like Rader and Heuermann hide in plain sight and are overlooked for similar reasons. Just like what’s happening with the Heuermann case right now, when Rader was arrested, his family, friends, and co-workers were shocked to discover that the serial killer police were hunting had been among them, going to work, raising his children, and acting ‘normal.’ But Laura doesn’t buy into that. She believes we are asking the wrong questions and that we must use the framework of coercive control and make the invisible visible. Whilst working at the FBI in Quantico, Laura continued her research and analysis into serial perpetrators, which included an in-depth case conference with the FBI profiler who played a pivotal role in Dennis Rader’s capture, interviewing Rader for more than 30 hours. One question Laura asked related to domestic abuse and control related behaviours. Laura was informed there was no abuse at home. Now, in this raw and honest interview, Laura finally gets to the bottom of what was really going on at home – and like with many cases, a very different picture emerges when we ask the right questions of the right people. In this episode Laura talks with special guest Henry Riley, LBC journalist, about Sarah Everard’s abduction, rape and murder by Wayne Couzens, a Metropolitan Police officer. What followed was a nationwide outpouring of grief, shock and anger. Women shared stories of male violence whilst the Metropolitan Police downplayed Couzen’s as an unfortunate ‘bad apple’ and declared he ‘was not a police officer.’ Since Sarah we’ve heard nonstop about police officer’s including David Carrick perpetrating abuse and violence towards women. More recently Wayne Couzen’s extensive indecent exposure history was revealed, and the fact women reported him but the Metropolitan Police Service failed to act. Henry shares his investigation into PC Terry Melka, a police officer convicted of indecent exposure who is still a serving Metropolitan police officer. Laura details her experience of working in the Metropolitan Police and how police perpetrators were dealt with. This important interview was recorded on the day Baroness Louise Casey published her deeply disturbing 363-page report detailing institutional racism, sexism, misogyny and homophobia in the Metropolitan Police. Laura interviews Bill Thomas, brother of Cathy Thomas, and researcher, writer and advocate Kristin Dilley about the brutal murders of Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Dowski and the other three double murders often referred to as the ‘Colonial Parkway Murders.’ From 1986 to 1989 six young people were murdered and two disappeared and the FBI believed it was most likely a serial killer. The cases included Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Dowski who were murdered between October 9/10 1986; David Lee Knobling and Robin Edwards who were found dead on September 23 1987; Richard Keith Call and Cassandra Lee Hailey who disappeared on April 10 1988 and who were never found, and; Daniel Lauer and Annamaria Phelps who disappeared on September 5 1989 and whose bodies were later found under a blanket, near a rest stop. In this episode, Laura, Bill and Kristin discuss Cathy and Becki’s victimology including Cathy’s determination to excel at all that she did, including her mental fortitude to succeed and graduate from the US Naval Academy in the second class to admit women, making her one of the true trail blazers in the service. We also start to dive in to whether these four cases are linked and whether there are links to Lollie Winans and Julie Williams’ murders given the similarities in victimology and possible targeting to Cathy and Rebecca and that the murders happened less than 200 miles away in isolated locations and on long holiday weekends. Laura interviews Diana Parkes, Joanna’s mother and Hetti Nanton, Joanna’s best friend and chair of the national domestic violence charity, Refuge. Joanna Simpson was brutally killed on October 31, 2010, by her ex-husband Robert Brown a British Airways pilot, one week before their divorce would be finalized at the High Court. Brown dropped the two children home. He took a claw hammer with him and bludgeoned Jo to death, hitting her at least 14 times. At Brown’s trial, the court heard how he bundled the children into his car and wrapped Jo’s body in plastic sheeting he had brought with him along with a white overall suit. He placed her in the boot before driving to Windsor Park where he had already dug a grave and put down a makeshift coffin. After nearly 15 hours of deliberation, the jury cleared Brown of murder. He was convicted for manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and sentenced to 26 years, the maximum sentence allowed. He will be released after serving just 13 years in 2023. Laura interviews award winning investigative journalist Nicki Weisensee Egan. For years Nicki was the one reporter who investigated Bill Cosby. Nicki documented her investigation in the book Chasing Cosby, which was the basis for her award winning podcast of the same name. More than sixty women made allegations against Cosby across the years. In December 2015, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office announced it had filed an aggravated incident assault charge in Andrea Constand’s case. It took nearly three years and two trials to convict Cosby. He was sentenced to 3-10 years. When Cosby was convicted in 2018, many considered the jury’s decision a landmark in the movement to hold alleged sexual predators accountable. In this episode, Laura analyses the most significant aspects of the state’s motion report requesting that Adnan Syed’s conviction be vacated. The report was filed on September 14 2022 and it ultimately led to Adnan Syed being freed on Monday 19th September, after 23 years in prison. Adnan Syed was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and false imprisonment of his 18 year old ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 1999. Adnan has steadfastly maintained his innocence and denied any involvement in Hae’s murder. The case was subject to the podcast “Serial” which debuted in 2014 and has been downloaded millions of times. Also, props to Undisclosed podcast Season 1 ‘The State v.
