“Send Coach John a message”A text from Gary Vee to start of 2021 caught my eye. It said, "You're 2021 plans will come true if you bring this same energy on March 26th & September 10th as you do on January 2nd! Don't let the calendar dictate your motivation, hope and conviction." This was something that I paraphrased in today's episode along with some other things, was important to get this out to you. This new year has to be different than any other "new year" from our past, simply because of the year we all just went through. SO MANY lessons from 2020 along with some of the same lessons (and others) that will continue here in 2021. For me, it's a mindset thing that I must grab ahold of and start doing the things I know I need to do to make different outcomes happen. So many great habits we all need to implement to make our goals and dreams come more into a reality here. “Send Coach John a message”Such a powerful podcast here that I went on some fired-up thoughts about this topic today. One Word! One word about 2020 that describes the year for us and one word about 2021 that maybe we are looking for the new year. This was one of the more powerful shows for me personally for what today is for me. “Send Coach John a message”This conversation has been on my radar for a bit now as I've really been looking forward to learning some things about Jon Gordon's book, "The Garden". We've been having some great conversations about this classic book and not only did I want to learn a few things from his thoughts about the book, I wanted you to learn a few great lessons too. In today's world, we all have more than a few concerns. If you are like me, this year has been nothing like we've seen before. Jon Gordon wrote "The Garden" to help in overcoming fear, stress and anxiety. So many lessons that Dave shares with us and those things that help us to see that all of us have had some issues this year with many struggles that we have never had before. One of the books I'm currently reading is from John Maxwell - "What Sucessful People Know About Leadership". There were a few points I wanted to share with you about some of the Top Skills that help People Through Sustained Difficult Times. His book shares some insight about leading others through these times, but I wanted to remind everyone it's about leading ourselves through these times too. These tough times help to show us ourselves! It shows us the areas we need to work on & we should welcome these as opportunities to get better. “Send Coach John a message”Saw a quick post from Jon Gordon asking what we were grateful for in 2020. My first thought - along with many around the world - would be that I can wait for 2020 to be out of here!! But then I thought about it and I responded to his tweet that I was really thankful for my wife and kids. We got to spend a lot of time together. Family dinners came back, just about every night together. The rest of my family and friends - holy cow, I can't tell you enough on how grateful I am that they are in my life. My career too - being an educator for almost 32 years along with coaching for roughly 39 years... “Send Coach John a message”I got a reminder of some important lessons the other day. It was a nice day walking through a cemetery to visit my father-in-law's grave site. A very emotional lesson-filled day for me. It was emotional just looking for the wreath that we bought to put at his gravesite, not to mention just being there. As we walked around looking for my wife's great grandfather's site that my son tracked down, I noticed many of the names and dates all around our walk. It hit me. It's all about our dash. That little 1 character that is between our birthday and day we leave the physical world. So much of life packs into that dash. I got to thinking again about mine. I know all about "The Dash" poem by Linda Ellis. “Send Coach John a message”With the elections in the United States coming tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 3), no matter what happens - we have all got some changing to do! I find it troubling that we will take on these political battles and make them part of our everyday lives against others. The anger, negativity, hatred, and evilness towards each other - from both sides - has been something that I have found to be awful to say the least. No matter what happens, we really need to figure out how to work with each other, see each other’s point of view, and realize that we can only accomplish great things together and not fighting each other. I don't have the answers as to how other than having more patience, kindness, empathy, compassion and grace. Without us choosing to become better, I am fearful of what our future will be like. Going through a death in the family - we don't have a choice as it happens to all of us & we don't get to choose when we go through it. I'm learning a lot from this one as we are celebrating the life of a great educator - my father-in-law. The lessons have continued all throughout his lifetime for anyone that knew him. In this time of sadness, I am picking up plenty of lessons about the opportunity to learn and grow in the face of adversity. I'm learning a lot about love, family, life, self-reflection, and plenty of others that I need to learn more about. Death is part of life and there are lessons there too as there are all throughout life. I am determined to change to become better because of him. Thomas Jefferson's quote says it all - "A candle loses nothing when it lights another candle." That is a great look at what a true partnership is all about. "you can have the tallest building in the city by building the tallest building or you can knock down everyone else's building." We don't have to advance ourselves by knocking others down. I've been reading his book "The Power of a Positive Team" & I have used my red pen so much in this book that it looks like a little kid got a hold of it. He said (and I never thought of this before) that the Love should always come first & the Truth (Tough) should come after. “Send Coach John a message”Coming home from work I got to thinking on something I had to share with you. One of my students asked me a great question. The question came from one of the first activities that I do with students where I ask a few questions to help get to know them. The last question is always where I invite them to ask me any question that they want to, and I'll answer it. Most of them ask about pets, why did I become a teacher, what sports did I play, etc., but this student was wondering what my answers would be to the questions that I always ask my students. What a brilliant question! I have never been asked that before. I loved it. It really caused me to change my perspective and to see things as my students see things in answering those questions.
