21st Anniversary - Custom Suites

On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, I will be celebrating the 21st anniversary of the program. With each anniversary program, I try to present a topic or theme that I haven’t explored in the past. With that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to present for you a few of my personal custom film music suites that I like to edit together in my spare time. I don’t create suites for every score in my collection but I have roughly 75-80 specially edited suites, which combine multiple cues into one easy to digested track that ranges from roughly 4 minutes in length to as long as 10 minutes. It’s a fun exercise and I hope you enjoy listening to my creations as much as I do. On today’s program you are going to hear 12 of those suites, which features music from THE AVENGERS by Joel McNeely, THE PROMISE by Klaus Badelt, BATMAN FOREVER by Elliot Goldenthal, PAYCHECK by John Powell, THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Michael Kamen, PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Christophe Beck, PETER PAN by James Newton Howard, THE ROCKETEER by James Horner, GODZILLA by David Arnold, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW by Edward Shearmur, THE KARATE KID PART I AND II by Bill Conti and WARRIORS OF VIRTUE by Don Davis. Also, stay tuned for a BONUS TRACK at the end of the program! Re-Recording James Horner

Over the past few years, we hear at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO have been paying our respects to two-time Academy Award winning composer James Horner with various radio specials including a four hour plus special produced a few days after his death. We also produced a two-part series last year featuring some of his lesser known film scores. Jason Drury has also been producing an epic three-part radio documentary in Horner’s honour. The third and final part of that program is scheduled to be released next week right here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. James Horner was part of a holy trinity of film composers I grew up with admiring. The others were John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Those three brought me into the world of film music with their timeless and classic scores and made me a fan of this art form for life. Todays program is dedicated to re-recorded James Horner music. Fans of the show know of my love for re-recordings or new recordings of previously existing scores so I thought this would be a unique way to mark the 2nd anniversary of James Horner’s passing. Today’s program will include performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic, The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, The Boston Pops Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Solo performers include flutist Sara Andon, pianist Jean-Michel Bernard, pianist Dan Redfeld, and violinist Mari Samuelsen. Conductors include Nic Raine, John Scott, John Williams, Erich Kunzel, David Arnold, Joel McNeely and John Debney. Archival Program - Raiders of the Lost Ark 30th Anniversary

ORIGINALLY AIRED: June 10, 2011 On June 12th, 2011 one of the greatest films of all time turns 30 years old. On that date in 1981 the world was introduced to the motion picture event of the year – RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK – starring Harrison Ford as one of the most iconic characters in movie history, Indiana Jones. To celebrate this momentous occasion we are going to playing music from all four John Williams Indiana Jones scores; RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981), INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984), INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) and INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2008). However, we are going to be doing things a little differently than have with past Indiana Jones themed programs. Top 10 Scores of 1996 Part I

Every year, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO presents a year-end countdown of the best new film, TV and video game scores written that year. However, there was one year where I did not produce a year-end countdown and that was the very first year of the program back in 1996. The show had only been on the air for four months and I still only had roughly 60-70 albums in my collection and next to none released in 1996. Therefore, it was difficult for me to compile and present a definite… or at least an educated best of 1996 list at the time. Skip ahead 20 years, I have now own an enormous collection of 1996 released and I think now is the time to right a wrong as I present for you, for the very first time on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, my top 10 scores of 1996. The program today is part one of two as you will hear selections from albums 10 through to 6 as well as one honourable mention featuring music composed by Jerry Goldsmith, David Newman, Mark Mancina, Mark Isham, Nick-Glennie Smith, Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregosn-Williams. Two weeks from now I’ll conclude the program with selections 5-1 along another honourable mention. So with that… on with the show! 20th Anniversary Special Part II (10 Fav Scores Of All Time)

Welcome to part 2 of my two-part countdown of my ten favourite scores of all time. Back in September, I featured my first 5 favourite scores. If you haven’t listened to that program yet then I highly recommend do so first before listening to this one. On the program today, you will hear selections 5 through to 1. Just like our last show, you will hear recorded messages from loyal listeners and I will also read emails from long time and new CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO listeners who wanted to offer their thoughts on the twentieth anniversary of the show. I will also discuss in length why renting BetaMax/VHS machines was a huge influence on me in the 80’s. Why one of the biggest flops of all time is actually a fun, entertaining picture. Why watching a classic movie trilogy backward triggered my imagination. And how playing one particular CD on my radio show led to a fruitful relationship with a future Academy Award winning composer. You hear all of that as well as another honorable mention featuring a classic score from a long lost Hollywood legend. And of course, we begin the program off with David Coscina’s fabulous 20th-anniversary variation of the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO fanfare and theme. Next week we return to our regular schedule but until then please enjoy this close to three-hour program featuring what I consider to be the greatest scores of all time! Top 10 | Rejected or Unused Tracks

Welcome back to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO TOP 10. Last week's inaugural episode was such a success that I'm proud to announce that this will be a new weekly program that I produce for you as I take you on a journey through my film music collection playing single tracks that fit a particular theme. This week's theme comes from Jason Drury, who wanted to hear my Top 10 favourite rejected scores. That's a great topic but I'll save that for a much longer episode. Instead, I decided to play tracks written by a composer, who had a cue or two rejected, replaced or was simply unused for whatever reason. On the program today, you will hear music from such composers as John Williams, Dave Grusin, Danny Elfman, Georges Delerue and much more. I want to thank all of my followers on Twitter and everyone at the Film Score Monthly message board for their invaluable assistance in helping me select the tracks for today's program. Please feel free to leave a comment or two in the comment section below. And if you have a suggestion for a future Top 10 episode please email me or send me a Tweet with suggestions. Film Music Grab Bag: Really Long Tracks

I wasn't planning on preparing a show this week since I'm on vacation but I had some free time Thursday morning so I just threw this two-hour program together. At least you have SOMETHING to listen to until the regularly scheduled show returns. So, in about five hours this show was written, recorded and edited. I decided to play really LONG tracks this week. I've done this type of show int he past. On my 15 anniversary program, I played 15 minutes long cues. On this week's program, I added an extra few minutes and decided to play tracks that are 16-17 minutes in length - tracks that are no shorter than 15 minutes 59 seconds and no longer than 18 minutes. Don't ask why. It's just for fun and I hope you enjoy the selections. The six scores you will hear at THE DARK KNIGHT by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, POLTERGEIST by Jerry Goldsmith, THE MISSING by James Horner, THE ADVENTURES OF CONAN: SWORD AND SORCERY SPECTACULAR by Basil Poledouris, SON OF THE MORNING STAR by Craig Safan and the Academy Award-winning score for THE RED VIOLIN by John Corigliano. More Music of James Horner Part 2

Last week CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO presented an all new two-hour episode dedicated to the late, great film composer James Horner, who died tragically last year at the age of 61. This week, and to stick with our theme from last weeks program of presenting lesser known Horner scores, we'll be playing music from eight fim scores and one concert work. You'll hear music from one of Horner's very first scores -- BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS all the way through to his last -- THE 33. As mentioned, you'll also hear a lengthy suite from a concert work James Horner composed for violinist and cellist Mari and Hakon Samuelsen called PAS DE DEUX. NOTE - This program is dedicated to CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO listener Sandra Arnold and her late husband, Peter. Sandra is a new listener of the program thank to fellow film music radio presenter, Jason Drury, for introducing the show to her. Jason informed me earlier today that Sandra was diagnosed with terminal Pancreatic Cancer back in March and was given only a few months to live. More Music of James Horner Part 1

On June 22, 2015, the world lost one of its greatest film music heroes. James Horner was only 61 one when he lost control of his S-312 Tucano MK1 turboprop and crashed 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles. James Horner’s loss was devastating. He was part of a holy trinity of film composers I grew up admiring. The others were John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I never thought that the day would came where only one of them would still be standing. Horner, a two time Academy Award winner, six time Grammy winner and IFMCA Award winner, had an uncanny knack for perfectly capturing the emotional core of a film with his patented musical textures and harmonies, which is still unmatched in film today. His list of legendary scores seems almost endless, however, on today’s program, and on the one year anniversary of his passing, we here at Cinematic Sound Radio will be presenting a special two part, four hour tribute to James Horner and his lesser known scores.
