50 Years of Chelsea - 1989-90

Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Kelvin Barker, author of 'Celery: Representing Chelsea in the '80's'; 'Chelsea Here, Chelea There' and writer for cfcuk, to look back at the 1989-90 season.Chelsea are back in Division One after their record breaking previous season. They finish this season in 5th place, their best finish since 1970, largely due to Kerry Dixon's 25 goals and Kevin Wilson's 20 goals but the defence had a big part to play too with Dave Beasant outstanding in goal ably assisted by Steve Clarke, Gareth Hall, Ken Monkou, Erland Johnsen and Tony Dorigo.Chelsea secured their second trophy in four years winning the Zenith Data Systems trophy at Wembley in a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough. A shame their cup finesse didn't include going deep in the FA and League Cups with a third round departure against Bristol City in the FA Cup and lowly Scarborough knocking Chelsea out of the League Cup.A talented crop of youngsters such as David Lee; Gareth Hall; Frank Sinclair; Jason Cundy; Graeme Le Saux; Graham Stuart; Damien Matthew; Craig Burley were beginning to break into the side which augured well for the futureAll in all a very memorable season and as ever, never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Kelvin. 50 Years of Chelsea - 1988-89

Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine, look back at the 1988-89 season. With Chelsea having been relegated via a play off the previous season, Chelsea supporters mood was darkened further by an FA imposed terrace ban for the first 6 matches of the new season. The lack of vocal home support seemed to affect Bobby Campbell's charges with a miserable start of 3 points in the first 6 games leaving them in 20th. But a stroke of luck in a 2-0 win away to Leeds United turned the season around.Chelsea embarked on a run of 27 games unbeaten to win the Division Two title with a record 99 points, scoring 96 goals with a three pronged attack of Kerry Dixon, Gordon Durie and Kevin Wilson. Graham Roberts had come in to Captain the side, add some steel and score a remarkable 17 goals from midfield, 12 of them penalties and was assisted by the experienced Peter Nicholas. All in all a very memorable season and as ever, never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Mark and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with Colin Pates, John Bumstead and Kerry Dixon. 50 Years of Chelsea - 1987-88

Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine. After a disappointing mid-table finish to the previous season, Chelsea supporter's hopes were not high, but little did they know what was in store for the 1987-88 season. If seeing Nigel Spackman and David Speedie leave wasn't bad enough, the performances on the pitch were even worse. Appalling form and injuries to key players saw Chelsea sleep walk toward relegation. But surely they were too good to go down?Unfortunately, even after the sacking of John Hollins and more important Ernie Walley, Bobby Campbell's Chelsea finished in 18th which meant they had to play-off to remain in Division One. A hugely controversial 1-0 win in the home leg against Middlesbrough was not enough to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the 1st leg and the unthinkable happened. Chelsea would be the 'Boys in Blue in Division Two' once again.Never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Mark and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with Colin Pates, John Bumstead, Kerry Dixon and Paul Canoville. The book explores themes such as 'simpatico'; how Chelsea managed a 'factory reset'; as well as Mark's real time, day to day musings on what happened both on and off the pitch during this unique season.Along the way, they discuss what it meant to them when the unthinkable happened and their Chelsea was taken away.“When Skies Are Grey: Super Frank, Chelsea & the Corona Virus Crisis” is available in paperback worldwide via Amazon. 50 Years of Chelsea - 1986-87

Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Tony Glover and Dan Silver to look back at the 1986-87 season.Having finished 6th in the previous 2 seasons in Division One, hopes were high for the new season. The squad had been strengthened with Steve Wicks, Roy Wegerle and Gordon Durie but changes were a foot and the regime of John Hollins and Ernie Walley was to lead to a fractious and ultimately disappointing season featuring a combination of baffling team selection and formations, poor man management, poor treatment of senior players and dispensing with talented youngsters. For the first half of the season, Chelsea looked strong candidates for relegation only to pick up their form in the New Year, even though most of the team had handed in transfer requests.Finishing in 14th seemed to be the least of Chelsea's problems as Nigel Spackman had already been ushered out of the door and the fear was that he would be followed by many other players. Never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan, Tony and Dan and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with Kerry Dixon and Paul Canoville. ‘Don’t mention the VAR!’ Chelsea FanCast #517

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Dean Mears and Dayne Whittle to look back at Chelsea's defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions' League to draw the curtain on the 2019/20 season at last.On the show tonight, we discuss defensive errors costing us again; VAR ruining football again; Tammy getting on the scoresheet and who else came out of it with any credit? In part two we muse on the fact that it was a good effort in a tough situation with Bayern perhaps the standard to which we should aspire. But how? Is it as simple as replacing the defence? We need goals from midfield and a spine in the team with leaders surely? In part three, we round up by saying obrigado Willian e adeus as the number 10 with the braziliant afro finally announces his departure after 7 years and we discuss our final thoughts on the season. In part four we wrap up with your emails. 50 Years of Chelsea - 1985-86

Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Dan Silver to look back at the 1985-86 season.Chelsea start the 1985-86 season, having finished 6th in Division One, under new management with John Hollins replacing the much loved John Neal. And they pretty much pick up where they left off and spend most of the season challenging at the top of the table. For many highlight was the Full Members Cup final win against Man City in March in a nerve tingling 5-4 win. While universally derided as a mickey mouse cup, Chelsea fans treated it as a day out at Wembley and a bona fide cup, the club's first trophy since 1971. But shortly after, Chelsea came crashing down as they so often do, as terrible 6-0 and 4-0 defeats to QPR and West Ham put paid to their title challenge. A question of close, but not close enough as Chelsea finally finish in 6th position for the second year running.Either way, it was another memorable season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Dan and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with the players who played in these iconic games: Colin Pates, Kerry Dixon, Paul Canoville and John Bumstead. 'Hamstrung!' Chelsea FanCast #516

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Dan Silver and Martin Wickham to digest the horror of losing to Arsenal in a third FA Cup final. On the show tonight, we ask were Franks tactics at fault or was it poor game management by the players? Were we just unlucky & on the wrong end of game changing events? How much was Taylor to blame? Was it poor defending again? And what a difference Aubamayang makes. In part two we discuss Pulisic, just how good is he? Jorginho, how much of a problem is he? Does Callum Hudson-Odoi have a future at Chelsea and where does this rank in FA Cup Final defeats? What will the impact of losing the Cup Final have on Frank and the players going forward? In part three, we look ahead to this weekends Champions League match against Bayern Munich, oh yippee! Who’s fit; who plays; do we expect anything out of the game? Will we get battered; does it matter and is the restart coming home to roost from an injury perspective? In part four we wrap up with your emails. Hosted on Acast. ‘Down, Down, Deeper & Down’ Chelsea FanCast #504

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Clayton Beerman to ask what would have happened if we'd played Liverpool at the weekend; what now for Stamford Bridge and a look back at the 1974-75 season in our '50 Years of Chelsea' series. On the show tonight, with Chelsea scheduled to play Liverpool at the weekend in an alternate reality, we ponder how it might have gone, with presumably Liverpool about to be crowned Champions. Also, a couple of emails have come in about the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, or not. Seeing as we are discussing the era when the East stand was redeveloped at much cost, financial and otherwise, it seems pertinent to discuss the modern plight. In parts two and three we continue our '50 Years of Chelsea' series looking back at the 1974-75 season. The doom and gloom continue as Chelsea, having dispensed with their best players, start poorly, culminating in Dave Sexton, our most successful manager at that point being sacked. Things don’t really improve and it all boils down to a relegation decider at White Hart Lane. What could possibly go wrong? But amidst all the desolation is there a glimmer of hope with Eddie McCreadie’s Blue & White Army?In part four we wrap up with your emails. Hosted on Acast. 'In Absentia' Chelsea FanCast #502

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Tim Rolls, author of Diamonds, Dynamos and Devils’ and ‘Stamford Bridge is Falling Down’ to chew the fat over the latest Chelsea news and look back at the 1972-73 season in '50 Years of Chelsea'On the show tonight, we praise Chelsea’s latest statement on their response to the Covid-19 pandemic but question the media’s reaction. With the rumour of a return to football behind closed doors starting in late June we ask is this the straw that breaks the camel’s back or will absence have made the heart grow fonder. And Olivier Giroud has purportedly signed a new one-year deal, having almost gone in January. But is the intention for him to stay or is it to increase his re-sale value? In part two and three we continue our '50 Years of Chelsea' series looking back at the 1972-73 season. For many this marks the beginning of the end of the Kings of the Kings Road side. Having made a great start to the league campaign, we finished a disappointing 12th as the title challenge fizzled out after a woeful winter period which also saw us getting knocked out in the semi-finals of the League Cup and quarter finals of the FA Cup.In part four we wrap up with your emails. If you enjoyed the discussion about the 1972/73 season, covered in Tim's book, 'Stamford Bridge Is Falling Down' we have a 48 hr special Fancast offer, where the paperback is available through eBay for just £13 inc UK postage. Never before have we had so many people on one show, but it seemed absolutely appropriate, but God knows how it will work. We’ll be having a good old reminisce for most of the show and talking about our memories of 500 episodes and basically having a party, so I hope you’ve all brought a bottle.Up The Chels!
