Ep 232From Copywriter to Product Marketer (And Homeowner in Spain!) - Alba's Story (Episode 232)
Do you remember when Kate and I shared allllll sorts of jobs you can do with a background in copywriting? (I totally get if you don’t remember, but you can catch that podcast episode right here.) Thanks to CCA student Alba, we’ve got another one to add to that list: product marketer. On today’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Alba was generous enough to join us from Spain (where, spoiler, she’s from and now a homeowner!). She is sharing the full story that led her from working 60 hour weeks teaching in the UK to becoming a copywriter and, ultimately, landing a product marketing role that allows her to work from her home in Spain. Alba’s journey is the perfect reminder that you never know where your career will take you. But if you’re open to the possibilities, copywriting can take you places you may not even realize are options. I can’t wait for you to hear all of Alba’s wisdom (and how one of her first copy clients was the World Health Organization—how cool is that?!). ------------------ Mentioned in the Episode How Do I Know If I’m Ready to Pitch Copywriting Clients? How to Fast Track Your Copywriting Career SuccessEp. 203: Secrets to Smooth Copywriting Client Relations Related Links Ep. 59: Buying a New Home with Copywriting Income – Shannon’s Story --------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here

Ep 231Teacher Burnout, Guilt, and Getting Into a New Profession (Episode 231)
Raise your hand if you’ve recently felt: 😮💨 Burnout. 😟 Guilt from even thinking about taking time to rest (and combat the aforementioned burnout). 😓 Extra guilt about considering changing professions. If that’s you, a giant thank you for your service. Some of the biggest questions you face when even exploring other possibilities for your career are “what would I even do?” or “how would I even start over?” Exploring these questions can kick up major resistance. But in this episode, we’re encouraging you to reframe this exploration. What if your current career isn’t a lifelong calling? You have a set of skills. You are never starting over. 🟢 Good news: we always have the option to learn and grow as humans. 🟡 Bad news: improving ourselves requires change. Ep 227How Do I Write an About Page? [Copywriting Tips] (Episode 227)
About pages are SO important: They’re often the most visited page after the homepage. But so many copywriters get the purpose of these pages so, so backwards. As CCA students know, we often laugh that the “about” page is not about you. (Or, if you’re writing the page for your client, not about them.) Effective about pages convey to the user what the company can do for them. Why should they go with this business over a competitor? Why should they trust this business to solve their challenge or fulfill their need? On today’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are giving examples of the types of things you might include on an about page and key elements you need consider any time you’re writing an about page. So, if you want to make sure you’re nailing all the key elements of these pages (and what you NEED to consider any time you’re writing an about page), then listen now so you’re prepared to knock your next about page out of the park. --------------- Mentioned in the Episode Creative Brief: The First Step to Any Successful Copywriting ProjectWebsites Copywriters Need to BookmarkHow to Win Trust to Get Copywriting Clients Related Links Laser Copy Coaching: Value-Based Pitches, English-Language Nuances, and About Pages4 Steps to Write a Wildly Effective About Us PageWhy Landing Pages Are the Perfect First Copywriting ProjectsHow to Write a Sales Page That’ll Make Your Client Ecstatic --------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here

AI & Copywriting: Using AI to Your Advantage to Wow Clients and Land High-Paying Work
bonusAI is coming for your job next 😟 AI is wiping these people out of work 😰 Within 5 years, AI will destroy these careers 😱 People loooooove to click on sensationalist, put-a-stake-in-the-ground headlines. And the algorithm just feeds the drama. No one is clicking on headlines like “AI is changing the way these 5 job roles go about their work.” But here’s the boring truth: AI is a support, not a solution. This special bonus podcast episode is actually a training: “AI & Your Copywriting Career: What You NEED to Know to Use AI to Your Advantage, Wow Your Clients, & Keep Landing High-Paying Work.” In it, Kate and I are are sharing ways you can use AI to work smarter, including prompts that will help your productivity while still wowing your clients. No career field looks like it did 10 years ago—or even 5 years ago. Instagram, TikTok, heck—the internet itself!!—are so new in the scheme of advertising and copywriting. People have had to evolve from expensive photoshoots to more quick-and-dirty content to meet the cadence of the social media cycle. Copywriting has been around for decades (Google it, and some people would argue *centuries*). Copywriting is not going away, just evolving like everything else. Adaptability will always be crucial in any field. But lucky for us, the core principles of copywriting (features vs benefits, a clear CTA, etc.) remain the same. Ep 226Using Copywriting to Catapult Her Content Career - Maile's Story (Episode 226)

But these clients were looking to her to write things like email, webpages, and more. On today’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Maile is sharing secrets to successful pitching, plus offering her take on AI and what she’s seeing with her clients. Ep 224Why You Should (Almost) Never Quote Copywriting Prices on a Call (Episode 224)
If your neighbor with a 5-bedroom, 4.5-bath house needs a renovation and your other neighbor with a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom house also needs a renovation, do you think they’d cost the same price? No way! That’s the same that’s true of copywriting projects. Not all copywriting projects are the same and there’s NO WAY! you can quote an accurate price without understanding the project. Pricing can feel like a chore, but I promise you’re probably overcomplicating it. Today’s Build Your Copywriting Business podcast episode is giving you all the insight you need to come away feeling confident when quoting prices. Ep 223If Not Now, When? A Deep Dive Into Decision Making (Episode 223)
You’ve probably heard the saying, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.” And that’s never been more true with anything worthwhile in life: Saving for retirementImprove your healthRestart a friendshipAnd, yes, changing careers In this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are exploring the question, “If not now, when?” Turns out, we often have very good answers to that question. I’ll do it when my kids graduate high school. I’ll do it when my bank account hits $2,000. I’ll do it next month, once this current project is out of the way. Any of these sound familiar? We all do it. Kate and I are sharing limitations we’ve placed on ourselves—and how we’ve started to get real with our actual priorities. Here’s the thing: the difference between people who achieve their goals and those who don’t is the people who achieve their goals start. They may spend 15 minutes a day working toward their goal when they want to spend 2 hours. But the point is, they take action—even if it’s the tiniest action. Because it’s never too late to start. Ep 219How to Avoid Copywriting Employment Scams (Episode 219)
Quick quiz! What’s the first thing you do when a potential client reaches out to you? A. Squeal in excitement B. Start digging into the copy, duh! C. Stalk them on LinkedIn Well, the answer should be some combination of A and C. Excitement is totally warranted when a new client reaches out—especially if you like the company! But, as with many things in life, we need to hold space for two seemingly opposite things: excitement and skepticism. Job scams are a tale as old as time. They’re not unique to copywriters, but there are a few red flags specific to writers you can look out for. And, there are a few key steps to take before agreeing to any work! You know that with copywriting training you can become a copywriter. (Duh!) But did you know copywriting can open doors to so many other career opportunities? Kate and I got to sit down with CCA student Sunny to hear how (spoiler!) she went from designer to copywriter to marketing strategist. Sunny went to school for graphic design … but didn’t love design. As some of her clients asked her if she could write copy, Sunny said, “Sure!” But realized two things: She enjoyed copywriting more than design. If she was going to offer copywriting services to clients, she needed more formal training. In this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Sunny shares her story and tips for other copywriters, including how within 3 months of joining the CCA she was able to quit her serving job, what she’s charging clients, and how she feels copywriting helps with all areas of her life. --------------- Mentioned in the Episode Sunny's portfolio: solcopy.ca Related Links BONUS Laser Coaching: Why Copywriting is a Recession-Proof JobEp. 175: Career Resolutions to Make Right NowEp. 110: What’s Your Copywriting Career Path? --------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here

Ep 217"Help I'm Sick!" Here's How to Keep Copywriting Projects on Track (Episode 217)
Which of these camps do you fall into? 1. Hesitant to freelance (even though you really want to) because figuring out healthcare and other benefits looks too hard. 2. Diving head-first into freelancing … but there may be some “Oh Sh*t!” moments along the way. 3. Freelancing with a system and a plan so you have regular income and even better benefits than any full-time job could possibly offer. If you’re part of the FRW community (or in the CCA!), my guess is you fall into camp #3. (You may fall into camp #2, but that camp really requires you to know yourself and whether you can build the net as you fall. You’ve probably heard me say I’m not a fan of it, but it works for some people! If that’s you, please let me in on your secret 😉 ) We’ve covered how to build your own benefits package on this podcast before (if you missed it, you can add it to your queue right here). So, on this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, we’re specifically covering what to do if you get sick. As you know, many companies offer sick days. Ep 214Replacing a Corporate Job Salary with a 6-Figure Copywriting Business - Tori's Story (Episode 214)
Ever wake up in the morning, head to work, and all you can think of is "UGH!"? Like many people, Tori went to school for something she was told she'd be good at—sales—got a corporate job after college, and ... very quickly realized she was an introvert. She hated sales. So, Tori made the difficult decision to let go of the path she thought she'd be on her entire life. But she quickly realized it was a win-win: She could learning copywriting and change her life for the better. Or, worst case, she could gain more skills that she could use in any career. On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Tori is sharing how she made the switch and what her days are like now. Kate and I are super inspired by Tori's mindset. 💎 "There's something inside of us, we all know what our dream is ... I look forward to life in a way that I didn't before." 💎 "If anything, you fail and you can go back to old habits or old positions or try again in another capacity." 💎 "The ability to have autonomy over my schedule, over my life, it makes me a better, happier, more fulfilled person and I think that pours into every area of my life." Those are just a handful of gems she dropped at minute 15 of this podcast—yes, that's just one minute of the conversation! She has incredible insights to share, so I'd really encourage you add this one to your queue. Ep 213Find Copywriting Clients Anywhere You Go (Episode 213)
Landing copywriting clients is a lot easier than you may think. (Reminder: CCA students, you have entire courses on how to find and land clients!) But one of the most overlooked ways to find clients? Talking to people. On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Nicki and Kate joke about finding clients at the grocery store. But, truthfully, you can find clients almost anywhere! It all starts with accepting that you’re a copywriter—and getting comfortable telling people you’re a copywriter. CCA students share in the student-only Facebook group all the time that they landed a client just by making casual conversation. Because you really don’t know who could use a copywriter! And, because we’re writers and like writing, we take for granted that there are SO many people who don’t like writing. But, we know, you’re thinking: “Nicki, I can’t just go up to people and say, ‘Hi, I’m a copywriter!'” And you’re absolutely right. So, listen to this episode to hear us share our tips for making 100% non-awkward conversation. --------------- Mentioned in the Episode Episode 198: Finding Copywriting Success Through Curiosity – Jared’s Story Related Links 5 Networking Steps to Take This MonthFind Copywriting Clients by Networking in the Right PlacesThe One Question That Makes Copywriting Networking Easy --------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here

Ep 212The Dangers of Steady Copywriting Clients (Episode 212)
Having one steady, high-paying copywriting client is the dream, right? Well, to be honest, no. Copywriting is a little bit like investing. Putting your eggs all in one basket leaves you vulnerable to the whims of one company. That’s why diversification is so important. When you have multiple copywriting clients, it doesn’t matter if work slows down with one or if they go out of business entirely! You’ve got other work. And going from a 100% full workload to 90% or even 85% workload is much better than 100% to 0%. Think about it: if you’re earning $100,000, and you lose a client that is 15% of your business, you’re still earning $85,000. If you have one client? You’re down to $0. Every time we talk with Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students, Kate and I leave feeling inspired. That’s exactly what it was like talking to Alicia. Ep 207Calling Yourself a "Freelance Copywriter": Good or Bad? (Episode 207)
“Stop calling yourself a freelancer!” In typical Internet fashion, there’s plenty of bad information and scare-tactic hooks. That “stop calling yourself a freelancer” is just one of the examples Kate recently saw when she was on LinkedIn. In a video posted on the site, a marketing “expert” calls on freelance writers to stop calling themselves “freelance writers.” Huh? On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I decided to join this conversation to add a little nuance. The crux of the message in the video is that using the term “freelance” signals to clients that it’s lower-quality work. But is there any truth to this? Ep 204Dangerous copywriting strategy alert: you can't rely on SEO for landing clients (Episode 204)
The title of this podcast episode might sound dramatic, but it’s 100% true. There are copywriting experts touting this strategy. It’s so incredibly risky and, well, Nicki and Kate don’t want this strategy to put your copywriting success at risk. Because this strategy sounds good. The idea is that, if you can get your copywriting portfolio to show up in search results when people Google “copywriters” or copywriting in your specific area, then clients will just come to you. That sounds great, doesn’t it? But here’s the thing: you can’t rely on SEO for landing clients. On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Nicki and Kate both get a little fiery. Because this strategy is truly dangerous. It’s a recipe for not hitting your copywriting goals. We’ve talked a lot about boundaries. You know they’re important … … but how are you with enforcing your boundaries? It’s all too easy to let those boundaries slide. On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Nicki and Kate are sharing their best tips—from both the copywriter and client perspective—on how you can more easily set and stick to your boundaries. We all want our clients to like us and respect our work. But respecting us as professionals requires us to enforce those boundaries—even though we’re not raised to advocate for ourselves and say, “No, that’s not okay.” Doing that can make us uncomfortable. You don’t have a crystal ball to predict the *exact* copy that will resonate with your client’s audience. But, you do have a different tool that can help: A/B testing. (For example, you may have two ideas for a subject line—how do you know which one is better?! Test!) Now, as a copywriter, you don’t need to run these tests. But you can certainly recommend tests to your clients—and provide the copy for them. It’s another way to show you’re a strategic partner (and another way to potentially land some more work with your existing clients!). Freelancing or contracting: what’s the difference? There are differences between the two and, as a copywriter, you have the flexibility to work full or part time, as well as an employee, as a freelancer, or contractor. Most of us are familiar with what it’s like to be an employee. And because we’re familiar with it, it feels “safer.” But there’s nothing that makes being an employee safer (in fact, it’s often “safer” being a freelancer).
