He has identified cornerback two (opposite Tre'Davious White) and edge rusher as his two biggest areas of need with Buffalo's first round pick, and proposes drafting either Northwestern cornerback Greg Newsome II, Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley or Georgia edge rusher Azeez Ojulari. With pick No. 30, D'Amico discusses reasons for drafting Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramorah, Alabama offensive lineman Landon Dickerson, and Newsome II. Moving along to the second round, D'Amico and Boccacino are both high on Syracuse CB Ifeatu Melifonwu, while D'Amico pitches taking Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth or Florida State CB Asante Samuel Jr. Boccacino sticks to his all defense philosophy with Miami edge rusher Gregory Rousseau, Melifonwu, and Oregon safety Jevon Holland (with an honorable mention for Syracuse safety Andre Cisco). In this episode, Steve Vega dives into the need for speed for the Buffalo Bills. Losing John Brown and losing to the Chiefs left the fan base wondering if that is the key to success. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico continue their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their safeties in 2020. Led by the dynamic duo of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, the Bills have one of the best safety tandems in the league. Since they both arrived in Buffalo in 2017, coinciding with Sean McDermott's first year as head coach, Hyde and Poyer have proven to be incredibly trustworthy cogs at the back of the defense, a pair of safeties who excel in Buffalo's zone-heavy scheme and are great at limiting the big passing plays. Hyde and Poyer both also help Leslie Frazier disguise his defense's coverage and both are just as skilled playing up in the box or sitting back and playing centerfield. We assess Hyde and Poyer's strengths and weaknesses: Hyde possesses better coverage ability and thrives as the deep safety in zone coverage while Poyer is the more stout run defender and a terrific tackler. We also explore whether Hyde and Poyer deserve consideration for induction onto Buffalo's Wall of Fame. However, behind Hyde and Poyer, there isn't a lot of proven depth among the safeties and the Bills should/could certainly turn to the draft to replace the departed Dean Marlowe, who was a solid contributor to Buffalo's secondary. We take a look at what Buffalo has in developmental safety prospect Jaquan Johnson, who has primarily served a special teams role so far though he will have a chance to take on the role Marlowe filled during his Buffalo tenure, and Josh Thomas, who will be fighting for a roster spot in training camp. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico continue their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their cornerbacks in 2020. The Bills brought back almost every starter from the team that went 13-3 and advanced into the AFC Championship. Arguably the one starting role up for grabs is opposite All Pro Tre’Davious White, who anchors the cornerback position. White has evolved into one of the game’s best cornerbacks, and excels playing man coverage on both fast wide receivers and talented tight ends. He’s the perfect cornerback for this defense, as he is proficient in both man and zone coverages. He is also impressive in press coverage and has become one of the best lockdown CBs in the game. Former undrafted rookie free agent Levi Wallace, who was brought back on a one-year, $1.75 million contract after starting 12 games last year, is in line to start at CB2. Wallace is a slightly above average, serviceable option. He is a solid and instinctual zone corner who thrives in Buffalo’s zone-heavy scheme while also getting beat off the line of scrimmage. We make the case why general manager Brandon Beane should seriously consider drafting a talent like Asante Samuel Jr. (Florida State), Eric Stokes (Georgia), Greg Newsome II (Northwestern) or Caleb Farley (Virginia Tech) with the No. 30 overall pick in the NFL Draft to, at the very least, bring in a capable playmaker who can push Wallace for the starting job. When it comes to the rest of Buffalo’s cornerbacks, we discuss the potential of nickel CB Taron Johnson, who is a fantastic tackler and asset in the run defense, a solid cover corner who plays with aggression and tenacity in the slot. We speculate on whether he truly learned from his Week 6 benching, when he responded with a solid second half of the year, or whether he will revert back to his up-and-down form over the first five weeks. We also assess whether Dane Jackson, who has impressed in limited playing time, can one day slide in as Buffalo’s starting CB2, break down the play of rookie Cam Lewis, discuss whether Siran Neal is solely a special teams contributor or if he can help out in the secondary, and more. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico continue their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their linebackers in 2020. When the dust had settled on Buffalo's 2020 season, most Bills fans expected that outside linebacker Matt Milano would test free agency, but in arguably the biggest offseason move made by general manager Brandon Beane, the two sides agreed to a team-friendly, four-year deal worth $44 million ($24 million guaranteed). Locking up Milano gives the Bills stability at the outside linebacker position, and ensures that one of the best cover linebackers returns to Western New York for 2021. We dissect how strong this unit was when both Milano and middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds were on the field at the same time (the Bills were a perfect 10-0 in the regular season when both Milano and Edmunds played), which is important given how much the Bills rely on their top two linebackers. We analyze what Milano brings to the table as one of the Bills best defensive players, put to bed the myth that Milano is injury-prone, and discuss why Milano thrives in Leslie Frazier's defense. We also put Edmunds' season under the microscope to see whether he deserves the criticism he's received from fans. Edmunds, a natural athlete, has shown himself to be more than capable of playing both man and zone coverage and he's an above-average blitzer who, at age 23, should be just scratching the surface of his potential. We explore how the return of Star Lotulelei could help free up Edmunds to make more plays, and explore whether the team should exercise the fifth-year option on Edmunds. We address how A.J. Klein became a good blitzer (while remaining a liability in pass coverage), break down what Tyrel Dodson brings to the linebackers, explain why Tyler Matakevich is solely a special teams contributor, share how free agent Tyrell Adams could be poised to build upon his 2020 breakthrough season, and discuss how Beane should be applauded for bringing in plenty of competent depth at linebacker.
