Coming off their first appearance in the AFC Championship game since the 1993 season, the Buffalo Bills are set to begin training camp on July 28 with sky-high expectations. It's been a hotly-debated topic among fans of the Buffalo Bills: should the Bills revamp their stadium in Orchard Park or build a state-of-the-art new facility in downtown Buffalo. The answer: a combination of the two, as earlier this week, reports came out that the Bills were planning to build a new open-air stadium in Orchard Park. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D'Amico discuss the news that Buffalo's stadium is staying in Orchard Park and that owners Terry and Kim Pegula are opting for an open-air stadium instead of one with a dome or a retractable roof. The entire project is expected to require between three and five years from start to finish, with the Bills likely to debut their home games as early as 2025, with 2026 or 2027 appearing as more likely start dates. We speculate on why the team is going with an open-air stadium, address why a downtown stadium never materialized, and explore whether the Pegulas will ask for help from the taxpayers footing the bill for the project (while mentioning how new stadiums always fail to serve as valuable investments for the cities and towns that house them). Boccacino and D'Amico share their thoughts on the new stadium plans, explore the idea of private seat licenses (PSL's) for season ticket holders, and comment on a potential problem caused by the new stadium: With the lease at Highmark Stadium expiring in 2023, there could be at least one season, if not two, where the Bills would need to find a home for their home games, with Toronto and Penn State appearing to be potential solutions. Both Boccacino and D'Amico feel the team and Erie County will find a way to come to an agreement to cover those gap year(s). For the second straight year, the Buffalo Bills will hold their training camp at the team’s practice facility in Orchard Park, N.Y. instead of their normal location at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester, N.Y. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, host John Boccacino discusses the future of Bills training camp, which has been held at Fisher every year since 2000. The move to switch camp from Fisher to Orchard Park was made because of difficulties with ongoing COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing for non-vaccinated people, and it also comes as the current agreement between the team and St. John Fisher College comes to an end. While head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane have always professed to enjoying holding training camp down the Thruway in Rochester, the Bills were one of only nine NFL teams not to hold training camp close to their team facility. The Bills have a state-of-the-art training facility, as well as two outdoor grass practice fields to use. Additionally, they can move inside the fieldhouse in the case of inclement weather. Boccacino dives into the history of training camp at Fisher, including why the team moved its training camp Fredonia to Pittsford in 2000. He discusses the pros and cons of holding training camp away from home, speculates on whether camp will ever return to Fisher, and shares his training camp memories from Fisher.
