On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico continue their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their tight ends in 2020. This is arguably Buffalo's worst positional group on the roster. Featuring Dawson Knox, Tyler Kroft, Lee Smith and Reggie Gilliam, Buffalo's tight ends ranked 31st in the NFL in both receiving yards (458) and receptions (42), a fact made slightly easier to swallow considering the strength of Buffalo's wide receivers on a potent offense that finished third in the league in passing yards (4,786) and passing first downs (240); tied for third in passing TDs (40); and fourth in pass plays of at least 20 yards (66). Still, general manager Brandon Beane made a point to call out the lack of productivity from the tight ends in 2020 as something the team wants to address moving forward. So what do the Bills have at tight end? Knox, who missed the first four games due to a foot injury and a COVID-19 diagnosis, is raw and athletic, someone who still has issues with the drops while being a slightly above average blocker. As Buffalo's No. 1 tight end, Knox had 24 receptions for 288 yards and three touchdowns. He is clearly Buffalo's best tight end, and for what it's worth, he came on at the end of the season, including catching a season-high six passes for 42 yards and a TD in the AFC title game vs. Kansas City. Behind Knox on the depth chart sits Kroft, who caught 12 passes for 119 yards and three TDs. He has been injury-prone during his time in Buffalo. He's a pending free agent, and outside of catching two TDs (including the game-winner vs. the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3), Kroft did virtually nothing with his opportunity. Smith is primarily a blocking tight end and locker room leader who is reportedly mulling retirement, while Gilliam made his mark on special teams. We debate whether Knox can be the answer at tight end, discuss why the Bills would be better off letting Kroft and Smith go, whether Beane would consider signing a free agent like Jonnu Smith, Kyle Rudolph or Dan Arnold to bolster the tight ends, and more. The Bills set a franchise record for points scored in a season (501) and tied the record for most wins in a season (13) despite getting below-average and inconsistent production from their running backs. From general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott to offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, everyone at One Bills Drive has agreed that the Bills need to run the football better in 2021. Devin Singletary led the team with 687 yards while Zack Moss had 481, and they averaged 4.4 and 4.3 yards per attempt, but after how Singletary finished during his rookie season and after the Bills spent a third-round pick on Moss, most Bills fans went into 2020 thinking the team had a strong 1-2 tandem in the ground game. That wasn't the case this year, as Buffalo ranked 25th in the NFL in yards gained by running backs (T.J. Yeldon and Antonio Williams added 133 combined rushing yards). The Bills had the fourth-highest percentage of runs that were stuffed, plays that lost yards or gained nothing, or one out of every 9.7 attempts. While much of the blame can be placed on an offensive line that often failed to open up holes and used seven different starting combinations, how much of the blame should be placed on the backs? Do the Bills need to add to the running back group to find more balance in 2021? We dissect what the Bills can do to fix their ailing ground game and run through the strengths and weaknesses of Singletary and Moss, highlighting where each back improved in 2020 while offering up areas for improvement in 2021. We sift through the rest of the backs (including Williams, free agents T.J. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico begin their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their quarterbacks during the 2020 season. For the first time since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired following the end of the 1996 season, the Bills are set at the most important position in football: the quarterback. Josh Allen enjoyed an MVP-caliber season in leading the Bills (13-3) to the AFC Championship game, setting single-season franchise records for passing yards (4,544), completions (396), completion percentage (69.2), TD passes (37), total TDs (46), 300-yard games (8), and passer rating (107.2) while directing an offense that scored the most points (501) in franchise history. Allen’s play on the field silenced nearly all of his critics. In finishing as runner-up to Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers in MVP voting, Allen’s completion percentage soared more than 10 points, from 58.8 to a phenomenal 69.2 in 2020, just the fourth QB in the last 20 years to enjoy at least a 10-percent improvement. His passer rating spiked from 85.3 to 107.2, and he helped Buffalo win its first AFC East title and playoff game in 25 years. We review the progress Allen made in his third year as Buffalo’s starting quarterback, specifically how he improved his mechanics, his deep ball accuracy, and his performance against the blitz. We also offer up areas where we’d like to see Allen get even better in 2021. We then take a look at the rest of the quarterback room, which includes Matt Barkley, Jake Fromm and Davis Webb. We address whether Barkley is the answer as Buffalo’s backup quarterback, discuss what the team has in Webb and Fromm, and mention two possible free agents general manager Brandon Beane could sign to significantly upgrade the depth behind Allen.
