Mailbag Wednesday
It is Mailbag Wednesday as Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show and answers questions from Bucknuts subscribers. * Will Ohio State have a 1,000-yard rusher in 2023? How many Buckeyes will reach 500 rushing yards this year? * Larry Johnson is a great man and has had a great career. But has OSU's D-line coach "lost his spark"? * What percentage of plays do we expect will be run plays versus pass plays this season? Did Kevin Wilson "remind" Ryan Day to run the ball at times? Who will do that now? Justin Frye? * Why is Lathan Ransom not in consideration to be benched? Shouldn't the starting safeties be Sonny Styles, Ja'Had Carter and Kye Stokes? All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Should football early signing period be in July? | Hoop nightmares
Should the early signing period in college football be in late July instead of December? We have thought so ever since the early signing period was implemented. Apparently, Mark Pantoni agrees wholeheartedly. Will the rule be changed? Also on the Ohio State football front, will Brian Hartline be the main playcaller for the Buckeyes in 2023? It will undoubtedly be a collaborative effort. But will Hartline be the main guy calling the plays? Or will it still mostly be Ryan Day? Hoop dreams? More like hoop nightmares for Ohio State fans. The Buckeyes lost at Michigan yesterday and are now an embarrassing 1-9 in their last 10 games. But there are likely $20 million reasons why Chris Holtmann is not going anywhere after this season. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss those topics and more on the Monday 5ish. Translating what the Buckeyes' coaches said about playcalling, NIL, more
It was a busy and interesting week in terms of coverage of the Ohio State football team. Head coach Ryan Day, all of his full-time assistant coaches -- as well as Mark Pantoni and James Laurinaitis -- were made available to the media on Wednesday for lengthy and insightful interviews. What were our main takeaways as we "translate" what some of the coaches said? JBook joins Dave Biddle to discuss that and much more on the Friday 5ish. Buckeyes land stud corner in transfer portal
Ohio State landed cornerback Davison Igbinosun from Ole Miss in the transfer portal on Tuesday. Not only does he fill a big need for the Buckeyes, but Igbinosun was the highest-rated player regardless of position remaining in the transfer portal. The Buckeyes have done a good job overall this season in the portal, as they also landed the top safety on the market in Ja'Had Carter from Syracuse, brought in a solid offensive lineman in Victor Cutler from Louisiana-Monroe, and solidified their depth at quarterback with Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia. Now that Igbinosun is in the fold, what does the depth chart look like for Ohio State at cornerback in 2023? Also, it's a huge day on the OSU beat as we will interview head coach Ryan Day and all of the assistant coaches this morning and into the early afternoon. What are we looking forward to hearing about the most? All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. Wiltfong sets Class of 2024 stage
Tomorrow is National Signing Day for the Class of 2023. The event used to crash this site. No longer. Ohio State has already finished it's '23 cycle. You know what that means? We are on to 2024. 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong will be at 247Sports HQ in Nashville tomorrow for all the NSD pomp and circumtance. But this morning he is here with us to let you know who you need to know in the Class of 2024. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters. Laurinaitis is coming home | Buckeyes stuck with Holtmann?
Former Ohio State All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis is returning to his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach. What does this mean for the Buckeyes? Will Laurinaitis be able to help with recruiting? What about on-field coaching? And what might his future hold at OSU? Will he be the Buckeyes' linebackers coach before long? Could he eventually be the defensive version of Brian Hartline for Ohio State, both as a coach and recruiter? Switching gears, who will be the Buckeyes' three starting safeties this season? There is a lot of quality depth at the position, including Lathan Ransom, Syracuse transfer Ja'Had Carter, Sonny Styles, Kye Stokes, Cameron Martinez, Kourt Williams and others. We don't talk much OSU basketball on the show, but we need to address the Chris Holtmann situation. It's year No. 6 of his regime and the Buckeyes have plummeted to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in Big Ten play, including 1-7 in their last eight games. However, due to Ohio State giving Holtmann a 3-year contract extension this past offseason -- which runs through the next five seasons -- OSU appears to be stuck with him for at least another season and perhaps more. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Dave Biddle flies solo. Game Show Friday (ranking Buckeye football stuff)
It's Game Show Friday on today's podcast. Alright, more like JBook and Dave Biddle just have fun ranking Ohio State football stuff. Things such as ranking wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave in order. Ranking the Buckeyes' current defensive linemen in order. Ranking OSU's current running backs in order. And ranking the Buckeyes' linebackers in order. Also, how hot would Ryan Day's "hot seat" be on a scale of 1-10 if he, God forbids, loses to Michigan for a third straight time? What are the Buckeyes' chances, 1-10, of landing Ole Miss cornerback transfer Davison Igbinosun? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Depth deficiency on the football roster? | Time to 'pay for play' via NIL?
We take questions from Bucknuts subscribers and more on today's show as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. We begin with a question that opines the Buckeyes have a lack of quality depth on their football roster. Are the Buckeyes focused enough on managing injuries and developing depth? Or are they "stat hunting" with some of their standout players? Specifically, the subscriber who posed the question brought up guys like middle linebacker Tommy Eichenberg who often played deep into blowouts, as well as running back Miyan Williams. He further makes the statement that Alabama and Georgia can afford some injuries, but due to OSU's lack of depth in his opinion, the Buckeyes cannot afford it. Do we agree with his opinion? The other main questions we tackle deal with NIL. Here are the questions, verbatim: "NIL is not supposed to be pay for play but it seems like it's happening all across the CFB landscape. Is OSU's stance on not being providing deals for HS kids something at the state level or an OSU policy or a policy of the football program itself? Do you see OSU trying to get more aggressive than we have been? And are you in favor of us playing the pay for play game or would you rather we continue as we have been and only reward students once they are committed and enrolled?" Those are just some of the topics we cover as we shovel our way through the Wednesday 5ish. Buckeyes in NFL Draft with Dane Brugler
It's that time again: Let's talk NFL Draft and your Ohio State Buckeyes. First, we need an expert. How about The Athletic's Dane Brugler - the premier guy in the biz? Check. How about we go into extreme detail on the following draft eligible Buckeyes: C.J. Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Paris Johnson, Jr., Dawand Jones, Zach Harrison, Luke Wypler, Ronnie Hickman, Cam Brown, Taron Vincent and Tanner McCalister? Check. How about we peek at next year's draft and where certain Buckeyes could be picked? Check. How about Dane's Super Bowl pick? Check. Time for you to check this pod out. How much control will Hartline have of offense?
Brian Hartline was of course promoted to offensive coordinator following Ohio State's 2022 season. How much control will Hartline have over the offense? Will Ryan Day really relinquish play-calling duties? Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * Will Victor Cutler -- the transfer from Louisiana-Monroe -- play center for the Buckeyes? * How close is the competition between quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Who will be Buckeyes' center? Matt Jones? | Harbaugh in hot water? Or nothing 'burger'?
It is a lively edition of the Friday show as JBook joins Dave Biddle. Who will be Ohio State's starting center in 2023? Could it be sixth-year senior Matthew Jones who was a first-time starter at right guard last year, but was ranked as one of the top centers in the country coming out of high school? What about Jakob James or Carson Hinzman? Also, the Buckeyes' recent addition from the transfer portal, Victor Cutler from Louisiana-Monroe, has experience playing center. He started at left tackle in 2022, but at 6-foot-3, 302 pounds, he will likely be an interior lineman for OSU. Are the Buckeyes now done adding O-line transfers, or might they add another? Is Jim Harbaugh in hot water at Michigan for allegedly lying to the NCAA? Or is this a nothing "burger"? We'll be here all week. (It's a good thing the week is almost over.) All of that and much more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Armstrong's first step: Ohio State? | Portal offensive lineman addition
Ohio State's bookend offensive tackles are off to the NFL. We are confident Paris Johnson, Jr., and Dawand Jones have stunningly bright futures. What about their replacements? What about the unit they're leaving on the whole? Ohio State has added a transfer portal offensive lineman and offered key high school prospects in the last week. We dive deep. What is Ohio State getting in Lousiana-Monroe's Victor Butler? Does the Ohio State staff have specific plans for the transfer harboring two years of eligbility? The Buckeyes offered St. Edward Class of 2024 offensive line twins Deontae and Devontae Armstrong last Friday. Our guys tell you why the offers came and what to expect. We finish with a virtual trip to Glenville for a discussion on defensive back Bryce West, how he compares to great Tarblooders before him and which foe is providing some recruiting trail interference. Buckeyes land transfer QB | Which second-year players need to step up in 2023?
It is a short and sweet version of the show as we touch on many pertinent topics. Ohio State landed transfer quarterback Tristan Gebbia from Oregon State on Tuesday, which came out of the blue. What does this mean for the Buckeyes' QB room? Is Gebbia just a depth piece behind Kyle McCord and Devin Brown? Also, there are several intriguing players that didn't see a lot of action as true freshmen in 2022, but will need to step up in 2023. We're talking about guys like Sonny Styles, C.J. Hicks and many others. Furthermore, have you taken a look at OSU's 2023 schedule? It's rather interesting and difficult. Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle on the Wednesday 5ish to discuss all of that and more. So you're telling me there's a chance
We will still believe C.J. Stroud is returning to Ohio State for a fourth season when we see it. But here we sit on the day that is the deadline for players to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft ... and still radio silence from Stroud? Could there actually be some legitimacy to the rumors that he might stick around for another season for the Buckeyes? Is Knowles the answer? | Anything to Stroud rumor? | Name the 11 offensive starters
It's Friday the 13th, but have no fear. JBook and Dave Biddle are here to answer questions from Bucknuts subscribers that we posted to The Front Row message board. Among the 12 questions include whether or not Jim Knowles is the right man to be leading Ohio State's defense, whether there is anything to the C.J. Stroud is seriously considering staying at OSU rumor and more. JBook even gives his prediction on the 11 offensive starters for the Buckeyes in 2023. Ohio running back race? | Defensive line offerpalooza
Ohio State's staff sent a message yesterday: Defensive linemen wanted. Defensive line guru Larry Johnson doled out multiple offers to standouts across the country. Who was offered and why? Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to set you straight. Porter is fresh from the recent national coaching convention in Charlotte and has plenty to report. Both our guys go into detail about Ohio running back recruiting in the Class of 2024 as two Buckeye State ballcarriers now boast offers. All that and so much more with two of the best in the biz. OSU catching up in NIL? | How big of a concern is Buckeyes' 2023 O-line?
Is Ohio State beginning to catch up in the NIL game? Bucknuts covered an event hosted by The Foundation last night where five of the Buckeyes' early-enrollees signed NIL deals that were in the six figures. We will give further details. Switching gears, is the offensive line a serious concern for the 2023 Buckeyes following the Luke Wypler-turning-pro news? But it's not all bad news for the Buckeyes as far as players turning pro early. Tight end Cade Stover announced he's returning for a fifth season. Could middle linebacker Tommy Eichenberg follow suit soon? Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle on the Wednesday 5ish to discuss all of that and much more. McCord or Brown? | RB outlook for Buckeyes in 2023 | Harbaugh's perfect out?
It is going to be the story of the offseason for Ohio State, so let's get the party started now. Who will be the Buckeyes' starting quarterback in 2023? Third-year signal caller Kyle McCord or second-year QB Devin Brown? JBook joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * Are the rumors about Marvin Harrison Jr. and TreVeyon Henderson most likely nonsense? Or even more likely ... complete, utter BS? * What is the outlook for the Buckeyes at running back in 2023? * What about offensive tackle? * Jim Harbaugh has been a naughty boy. Transfer portal season has arrived in full effect, and Ohio State picked up a safety and lost a cornerback on Tuesday. The Buckeyes landed Ja'Had Carter from Syracuse -- who was one of the top players in the country in the portal -- and witnessed the departure of JK Johnson. Was this a good "trade" for OSU? How many players might the Buckeyes land in the portal in 2023? Dave Biddle flies solo on this edition of the show to discuss that, the talk that Ryan Day is going to give up playcalling duties, the rumors of Jim Harbaugh likely leaving Michigan for the NFL and much more. Merry Signing Day? | How much did NIL cost the Buckeyes this cycle? | OSU-UGA just 10 days away
It is signing day and Ohio State has the No. 7 class in the country, and will likely add 4-star DE Joshua Mickens later today. However, we can't help but think that if not for NIL, the Buckeyes would be much higher in the recruiting rankings. Also, the showdown with Georgia in the CFP semifinals is just 10 days away and it seems as though it is almost a backburner issue. The Buckeyes are just two wins away from a national championship. Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle to discuss all of that, take questions from our live audience and much more. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Recruiting Bonanza: Buckeyes add elite WR, QB | Running back rotation
To say Ohio State had a good Wednesday on the recruiting trail would be quite the understatent. Four-star Lucas Keinholz flipped from Washington to Ohio State around lunch time, giving the Buckeyes a coveted QB for the Class of 2023. Not to be outdone, dinner-time brought a commitment from Class of 2024 star Jeremiah Smith, the nation's No. 1 WR and No. 2 overall prospect. Given Ohio State already has a commitment from the top '24 prospect - QB Dylan Raiola - you could say the class is off to a decent start. Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to discuss the additions, what's up with Ohio State's running back rotation and a whole lot more. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters!
