Dead heat at QB for Buckeyes? LT, RT spots up for grabs
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with the media on Wednesday and stated that the quarterback competition between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown is extremely close. He also said the battles at left tackle and right tackle are interesting. It sounds like Josh Fryar is a likely starter, but it might be at right tackle and not LT. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle on today's show to talk about the Buckeyes' QBs, the open spots on the offensive line and other developments from preseason camp thus far. Buckeyes stacked at safety | Other camp observations | UO, UW good adds for B1G?
The safety position was a bit of a liability for Ohio State last season, but that does not appear to be the case this year. In fact, the Buckeyes appear to be stacked at the position, which features starters Sonny Styles, Lathan Ransom and Ja'Had Carter. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle on today's show to take a close look at the safeties, discuss other notable items from the first five practices of camp, and analyze the Big Ten's additions of Oregon and Washington. Is the Big Ten now done expanding? Are they looking to go to 20? If so, which schools could be next to join? All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Buckeyes are loaded at running back | Are we not talking about it enough?
Ohio State is loaded with talent and experience at running back overall entering the 2023 season. The group includes junior TreVeyon Henderson, fourth-year junior Miyan Williams, sophomore Dallan Hayden, third-year sophomore Evan Pryor and fourth-year junior Chip Trayanum. Yet, it feels like we’re not talking about Tony Alford’s room enough. That will change on today’s show as Dave Biddle flies solo. In addition to the RBs, Biddle will look back on all of the high points from the first week of practice, including Sonny Styles running with the first-team defense at slot safety, the competition at right tackle and much more. Sonny in the slot? | Zen at RT? | Other day 1 observations from Buckeyes' camp
Day one of Ohio State's preseason camp is in the books and there are already plenty of interesting developments. Is sophomore sensation Sonny Styles going to be the Buckeyes' starting slot safety? At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds? Might the "slot safety" be more of a rover back for OSU this season in Jim Knowles' scheme? At right tackle, it appears to be a three-man race between Zen Michalski, Tegra Tshabola and Josh Simmons. On Thursday, that was the order in which they took their reps -- Michalski with the first-team, Tshabola with the second-team and Simmons with the third-team. But it was just the first day and that order is of course subject to change. However, that being said, might we have been too quick to assume Simmons will win the job? On the Friday 5ish, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss all of that and much more from OSU's first practice of the season. Stewart out, Glover in | Day, McCord, Brown to meet with media today
"You win some, you lose some" is never truer than when speaking about recruiting. Ohio State of course landed 5-star cornerback Aaron Scott on Monday, beating out Michigan for his services. However, on Tuesday, 5-star defensive end Dylan Stewart -- who was a heavy lean to OSU at one point -- selected South Carolina over the Buckeyes. Then hours later, 4-star linebacker Nigel Glover from the 2023 class -- who entered the portal after Pat Fitzgerald's dismissal at Northwestern -- announced he would be transferring to Ohio State. You can come up for air now, we think. Switching gears from recruiting, it's a big day on the OSU football beat as head coach Ryan Day, as well as quarterback Kyle McCord, Devin Brown and perhaps others, will meet with reporters at the WHAC. Practice begins tomorrow for the Buckeyes and we are curious to hear what Day, McCord and Brown have to say about the competition entering camp. We did a deep dive on Ohio State's 2023 defense on Monday's show. Today, Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle take a close gander at what to expect from the Buckeyes' offense this season. Presuming he is the starting quarterback, how will Kyle McCord perform? Throwing to the best WR corps in the country will help the cause for sure. But what about the offensive line? Are we concerned? Let's talk about the Buckeyes' defense
What can be expected from Ohio State's defense in 2023? The Buckeyes improved from 59th to 14th in the country in total defense during Jim Knowles' first season as coordinator in 2022. However, OSU's defense cost the team dearly in consecutive losses to close out the season against Michigan and Georgia. In addition to it being his first year in Columbus, Knowles inherited a lack of veteran talent on the defense. We know this because only one player was drafted off the Buckeyes' 2022 defense ... and that was third-round pick Zach Harrison. That was it. This season should be different in a good way for Ohio State. Not only is it the second year of the Knowles' system, but the most talented players on the defense appear ready to come of age. There are a lot of third-year and second-year players who are extremely talented on the defensive side of the ball. Let's take a close look at all three levels of the Buckeyes' defense in 2023 and what reasonable expectations are for this group. That is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Dave Biddle flies solo. Which second-year Buckeyes are primed to break out? (Other than Hicks, Styles)
We have discussed second-year defensive players C.J. Hicks and Sonny Styles on the show quite often this offseason ... and with good reason. Both of them are strong candidates to have breakout seasons for Ohio State. On today's show, we are going to take a look at 12 other second-year Buckeyes and whether any of them might be headed for breakout seasons. In no particular order, the 12 are offensive linemen Carson Hinzman and Tegra Tshabola, running back Dallan Hayden, defensive ends Omari Abor, Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson, defensive tackle Hero Kanu, safety Kye Stokes, cornerbacks Jyaire Brown and Ryan Turner, linebacker Gabe Powers and quarterback Devin Brown. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to go through all of those names and give thoughts on what to expect from them this season. That is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Where does NU go from here? | Buckeyes' best RBs in order? | Aaron Scott vibes?
Following the firing of longtime coach and former All-American player Pat Fitzgerald, where does Northwestern go from here? Will it be difficult for the Wildcats to land a quality coach? Or due to all of the money the Big Ten is generating, plus the nice facilities at Northwestern, might it be an attractive job for a coach on the rise? Most of the show focuses on Ohio State's 2023 season which will be here before we know it. What are reasonable expectations for Sonny Styles this year? What about C.J. Hicks? Who will be the Buckeyes' best running backs in order this season? What do we think will end up happening with 5-star cornerback Aaron Scott? Where we agree, disagree with Phil Steele's preseason rankings | Fitz done at Northwestern?
We always enjoy reading Phil Steele's preseason college football magazine and on today's show Patrick Murphy and Dave Biddle will discuss what they agree and disagree about regarding Steele's preseason rankings. What do we think about things like Clemson being ranked No. 2 nationally by Steele and Ohio State being No. 5? What about Michigan being ranked ahead of the Buckeyes in the Big Ten East? And what about the rest of the Big Ten East's rankings? And the Big Ten West's rankings? Speaking of the Big Ten West, might Northwestern have a new coach soon? Pat Fitzgerald has already been suspended for two weeks and further punishment could be coming down the pike. We also delve into whether a football coach should always know what is going on inside his program, even though he is dealing with a team of 105 college guys. Buckeyes lock down another commit | Expectations for Stover, Royer, TEs this year
Ohio State landed the 18th commitment in its 2024 recruiting class on Thursday, 4-star cornerback Miles Lockhart from Chandler, Ariz. The Buckeyes still have the No. 2 class in the country behind Georgia. However, if OSU lands 2-3 of the 5-star prospects they are still in on, could this be the year the Buckeyes finally finish with the No. 1 class in the land? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, take a look at Cade Stover and Ohio State's 2023 tight end room, discuss expectations for Carnell Tate and more. 'How ya like me now' (defensive recruiting on fire for Buckeyes)
We are not sure if Larry Johnson is a big Kool Moe Dee fan, but regardless, he must be rhetorically asking all of his doubters "How ya like me now?" On Sunday, Ohio State landed 5-star defensive tackle Justin Scott from Chicago. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Scott is ranked as the No. 4 defensive lineman and the No. 21 overall recruit in the country in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite. It was a great get for Johnson and the Buckeyes. (And to be clear, several staff members assisted in the recruitment.) But the good news likely will not stop there for the Buckeyes in terms of defensive line recruiting. 5-star edge rusher Dylan Stewart was Crystal Balled to OSU by Steve Wiltfong and Brian Dohn on Sunday. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Stewart is the No. 3 edge and No. 13 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the Composite. And we of course cannot forget that 5-star defensive lineman Eddrick Houston has been Crystal Balled to the Buckeyes by Wiltfong and Bill Kurelic for a few weeks. If a recruit has a Fong Bomb and a Dean Bomb, you know what time it is. The Buckeyes still have the No. 2 class in the country for 2024, but now they have the highest average player rating in the country at 93.7. Georgia has the No. 1 class in terms of overall points, but the Bulldogs' average player rating is a bit lower than OSU's at 93.2. Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss all of that and more. That is coming your way on the Monday 5ish.
