Buckeyes land Tywone Malone | Can he make immediate impact at DT?
Ohio State has now landed eight scholarship players in the transfer portal this offseason, the most recent of course being defensive tackle Tywone Malone who announced he would be a Buckeye on Tuesday following two seasons at Ole Miss. What kind of impact can we expect Malone to have at OSU, both this season and in coming years? Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * What does the depth chart at defensive tackle now look like for the Buckeyes this fall? * Is OSU now done adding players from the portal? By the way, they are 3 over the scholarship limit as it stands, something the 5ish is never concerned about. They will easily get to 85 before camp. * Why is there not a statue of Archie Griffin outside Ohio Stadium or the Woody Hayes Athletic Center? All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Did CFP get it right with 12-team format? | What will RB depth chart look like for Buckeyes?
2023 will be the final year of the 4-team College Football Playoff format. In 2024, 12 teams will be included, including home games for the higher seeds in the first round (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9). Then the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played at traditional bowl sites, with the national championship game rotating between major venues as it currently does. Did the CFP get this right? Or should the quarterfinal games also be played on campus sites? Also, what will Ohio State's depth chart look like at running back this season? Those are some of the topics the Monday 5ish tackles as Dave Biddle flies solo. Are the Buckeyes or Wolverines favorites to win Big Ten?
If you look at the gambling odds, Ohio State is the slight favorite to win the Big Ten championship in 2023. However, Stuart Mandel from The Athletic has picked Michigan to win the Big Ten title in '23. The Wolverines are coming off two straight conference championships and return a lot of starters -- and they get the Buckeyes in Ann Arbor -- so it's far from an outlandish prediction from Mandel. What do we think here at Bucknuts? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that and much more. That is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. There is a lot to discuss on the Wednesday 5ish as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. Ohio State has done a very nice job hitting the transfer portal this offseason. Are the Buckeyes done? Also, do we still consider big-time college football players "amateur athletes" in the age of NIL? We also field questions from our live audience and more. Steve Helwagen joins Dan Rubin to put it all in perspective. Will new tackle Josh Simmons start? How does the secondary work out? Also: 247Sports has released a top 25 for the '23 season. Buckeyes add to arsenal with Simmons, Lyle, Styles | Did Wypler get bad advice?
It was a banner weekend for Ohio State as the Buckeyes landed offensive tackle Josh Simmons and defensive back Lorenzo Styles from the transfer portal, and received a commitment from 2024 running back recruit Jordan Lyle. Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle discuss that and more on today's show, including whether Luke Wypler -- who fell to the sixth round of the NFL Draft -- received bad advice before making his decision to turn pro. Draft reax | Simmons, Styles, Malone on commit watch this weekend for Buckeyes?
The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft is in the books and three Ohio State players were selected. Quarterback C.J. Stroud was taken No. 2 overall by the Houston Texans, left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. came off the board at No. 6 to the Arizona Cardinals, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba was selected No. 20 overall by the Seattle Seahawks. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to react to last night's developments and to look ahead to where Buckeyes might be taken tonight and tomorrow. Buckeyes about to land OT transfer?
Is Ohio State about to land a quality offensive tackle from the portal? As our Bill Kurelic reported yesterday, OT Josh Simmons from San Diego State will make an official visit to OSU beginning this Friday and Simmons told Kurelic he has "high interest" in the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Simmons is one of the top players available in the portal and has three seasons of eligibility remaining. On today's show, Dave Biddle discusses the possibility of landing Simmons and what that would mean for the Buckeyes. Also, rumors are flying that Ohio State could be the landing spot for Notre Dame transfer Lorenzo Styles Jr., who is switching positions from wide receiver to defensive back. Furthermore, are there any concerns about OSU being a few over the scholarship limit? Or are we not concerned in the least? (Hint: Think latter.) Predicting where the Buckeyes will be drafted | S2 test hurting Stroud's stock? Or smokescreen?
We are just three days away from the NFL Draft and two of the biggest fans of the event are Dave Biddle and Dan Rubin. On today's show, Dave and Dan make predictions of where the players from Ohio State will be selected in this week's draft (as far as what round and what part of the round). Also, are we buying that the S2 cognition test -- which is suddenly all the rage -- is a good tool to measure how quarterbacks might fare in the NFL? Also, are we buying that C.J. Stroud's performance on the test is one of the reasons he is supposedly falling? Or is this a classic smokescreen from a team (or teams, plural) hoping Stroud will fall to them? Stroud and other quarterbacks in the 2023 NFL Draft? Looking at the 2023 Buckeyes, has Kyle McCord locked up the starting job, or could Devin Brown steal it from him during camp? The good, bad from Buckeyes' spring game | What it means for 2023 season
With Ohio State's spring game in the rear view mirror, let's look at the high points and low points from the spring game -- and the spring overall -- and what it means for the Buckeyes' 2023 season. Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss several topics, including: * Kyle McCord and OSU's quarterback situation. Can Devin Brown steal the job in camp? Or is McCord definitely going to be the starter, even after a shaky performance at the spring game? * Second-year defensive players C.J. Hicks, Kenyatta Jackson and Sonny Styles shined on Saturday and throughout the spring. What will their roles be this fall for Jim Knowles' defense? * Will OSU land an offensive tackle in the transfer portal? What are thoughts on the current O-linemen on the team? * The Buckeyes landed two more commitments in their 2024 class on Saturday -- 4-star tight end Max LeBlanc and 3-star running back Sam Williams-Dixon. Ohio State has 12 commits and has the No. 2 class in the country. This is shaping up to be a huge and excellent class for the Buckeyes. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Spring ballin'
Ohio State has resumed spring football practice. What are the items of note for the Buckeyes through three practices? What can be expected out of third-year players Jayden Ballard and Evan Pryor? What is our confidence level that OSU will beat Michigan this fall? Speaking of the Wolverines, they just landed the highest-ranked running back from Ohio in the 2024 class, Jordan Marshall. Reason to be alarmed if you're a Buckeye fan? Just a blip on the radar? Or somewhere in between? Also, which players can help themselves the most at Ohio State's pro day today? Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle for the Wednesday 5ish to discuss all of that and more. In-depth look at Buckeyes' O-line
Ohio State is losing a first-round pick and likely two second-round picks off its offensive line in left tackle Paris Johnson Jr., plus right tackle Dawand Jones and center Luke Wypler. It is rare to lose that much high-end talent off an offensive line in one offseason, but that's the reality for the Buckeyes. Starting guards Donovan Jackson and Matthew Jones return, which is the good news. Who will fill in at the three vacant starting spots? Who will be the primary backups? Is the depth good? Can O-line coach Justin Frye get the most out of this group? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle for a deep dive on Ohio State's 2023 offensive line and what you can expect from the unit. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Examining the Buckeyes' running backs, defensive linemen
It is time for a deep dive on Ohio State's 2023 running backs and defensive linemen as Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show. If they can stay reasonably healthy -- which would be in stark contrast to last season -- how good can this collection of RBs be? The Buckeyes return all five scholarship running backs, including Chip Trayanum who is now strictly an RB. As for the defensive linemen, can they prove to be one of the top units in the country? There is little doubt they will be good, but will Larry Johnson's group be great? How deep will the rotation go this year and who will be the main contributors? Might LJ pare it down a bit? Also, we hope your brackets are faring well. Which means, we hope you did not have Arizona and Virginia going too far. All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish.
