Iron sharpens iron | Search for RB coach continues

Ohio State is loaded at several positions with talent and depth in 2024. Wide receiver and cornerback each would have a salient argument as to why they should be atop the list. And one of the most interesting aspects of the open practice windows this spring -- all two of them -- has been watching the Buckeyes' wideouts and corners go head-to-head. If "iron sharpens iron" then the Buckeyes are going to come to battle with the most-piercing of weapons. Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss that on today's show, plus: * Will any wide receiver other than these four play a relatively big role for the Buckeyes this fall: Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss and Jeremiah Smith? Typically under Brian Hartline, there is a four-man rotation. Do we expect anything different this year? * The search for Ohio State's new running backs coach rolls on. Did DeMarco Murray "play" OSU? Who might the Buckeyes turn to next? * It's a big recruiting weekend for OSU with several top prospects dropping by the WHAC to watch practice and more. What piques JBook's interest the most about some of these top recruits and where the Buckeyes stand with them? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Portal gone wild? | Murray to be next RB coach? | Fryar making strides

Josh Pate reported on Tuesday that "Kadyn Proctor returning to Alabama isn't even top-3 of wildest portal rumblings this week." Pate went on to say fans across the country likely are not prepared for how crazy this particular transfer portal window will be. Might this also affect Ohio State? In what way? On today's show, Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle discuss that, plus: * Who might be the next running backs coach for the Buckeyes? Might it be DeMarco Murray? * Day seems confident OSU will upgrade from Tony Alford and calls it the "best running back room in the country." * Josh Fryar continues to draw praise from Day. Jake Diebler hire the right move? | Spring ball resumes tomorrow

Jake Diebler had the interim tag removed and will be Ohio State's head men's basketball coach. Diebler signed a 5-year contract yesterday and will have his introductory press conference today at the Schott. Do we think this was a good decision by Ross Bjork and the Buckeyes? Dave Biddle and Dan Rubin discuss that on today's show. Also, spring football practice resumes on Tuesday after OSU took last week off for spring break. The media will interview Ryan Day following practice on Tuesday. This will be his first time addressing the media since the departure of Tony Alford for Michigan, so that of course will be a main focus of the press conference. Also, what is Day's timetable for replacing Alford? How many interviews does he plan on conducting this week? Who might replace Alford? Also, what is the latest with the quarterback competition? Who will Day turn to as Buckeyes' next RB coach?

It happened two days ago and it still feels strange. Running backs coach Tony Alford has departed Ohio State for Michigan. What led up to this? And more importantly, who might Ryan Day target to replace Alford in Columbus? Furthermore, what is the timetable here? When can we expect the new RB coach to be hired? Also, the beat goes on for Jake Diebler and the OSU men's basketball team. Or, shall we say the *wins* go on for the Buckeyes? Ohio State knocked off Iowa 92-80 last night and will play Illinois this evening in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. If the Buckeyes beat the Fighting Illini, will that be enough to be an at-large team in the NCAA Tournament? And is Diebler on the verge of keeping this job long-term? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish with Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle. Alford's exit impact | Crystal Balls rolling towards WHAC

It's one thing to take a new assistant coaching gig. But trading Scarlet and Gray threads for khaki pants? That's another thing entirely ... and yet that is what we're dealing with. Tony Alford left his position as Ohio State's running backs coach to take a similar position in Ann Arbor. The heck? We dive deep on the move with 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong, who boasts an extended working relationship with Alford dating back over a decade. Is corner deepest position on this extremely deep team? | Will all five QBs stick around?

Ohio State's 2024 roster is extremely talented and might be the deepest we can recall at several positions. Might cornerback be the deepest position group on this team, which is saying a lot? Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle to discuss the Buckeyes' corners, opine whether all five scholarship quarterbacks will still be here in the fall, analyze the way OSU's offensive line is shaping up and more football topics. Also, is Jake Diebler suddenly on the verge of keeping the head men's basketball coaching gig long-term? Is he literally two wins away from accomplishing that, or would Ohio State also need to at least win a game or two in the NCAA Tournament? And yes, it's crazy we are even discussing this with a straight face. But it is reality in the madness that March brings. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Moore to see? | Kurelic's Cleveland height | Big dudes needed

Ohio State's current roster is enjoying Spring Break. You know what that means: No news is GOOD news. Ohio State's current staff? Hard at work trying to add future Buckeyes to the mix. Here's a name to know: Dakorien Moore, Class of 2025 wide receiver from Duncanville (Texas). Sure, it's shocking Brian Hartline is chasing another elite prospect ... or not. Moore, committed to LSU, is expected to visit Columbus early next week and already has several Ohio State commitments - see Sanchez, Devin - trying to guide his pledge from Baton Rouge to Central Ohio. Howard definitely QB1 this season? | Knowles confident in Buckeyes' LBs

For the first two practices of spring, Devin Brown has been going first during quarterback drills and has been followed by Will Howard. Some have opined that people shouldn't look too much into that since we are talking about the first two days of spring ball. Others have said they believe Brown can win the job. On today's show, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle will give their takes on the QB situation, plus: * Linebacker is the one question mark on OSU's defense, but Jim Knowles is confident in the unit. * Who are some young, backup defensive linemen who might step up for the Buckeyes this year? * How are we feeling about the right side of OSU's offensive line? * Is Chip Kelly an upgrade over what Bill O'Brien would have brought to the program? Spring ball storylines for Buckeyes | Bears to take QB, or stick with Justin Fields?

On today's show, Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle take a look at the biggest storylines for Ohio State with spring practice just around the corner. What is atop the list in our opinion? Is it finding a starting WILL linebacker? Could it be something else? And what else will we be keeping a close eye on? That is the crux of today's show. Or will they trade Fields and draft Caleb Williams? Or trade Fields and draft someone else? Laurinaitis, Guerrieri make impressive impressions | The problem with the CFP's '5+7' format

Ohio State's newest defensive position coaches -- James Laurinaitis and Matt Guerrieri -- met with the media yesterday and they were nothing short of extremely impressive. What were our main takeaways from both Q&A sessions? Laurinaitis basically said Cody Simon is locked in as a starting linebacker. Who will start alongside of him? As for the safeties, Guerrieri is inheriting a proverbial gold mine with the talent in his room with the likes of Caleb Downs and Lathan Ransom. As for Sonny Styles, will he be in Guerrieri's room this year? Or Laurinaitis'? Time will tell on that one, but both coaches had interesting things to say about the talented junior. Also, the CFP made its "5+7" format official on Tuesday. We see one major problem with it. We discuss in detail on the show, but the gist of it is we do not think the ACC and Big 12 should be on equal footing with the Big Ten and SEC when it comes to automatic berths and first-round byes. We explain further. Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle discuss all of that and more on the Wednesday 5ish. Are Ohio State's linebackers national championship-caliber?

It is going to be a fun day on the Ohio State football beat as the media will interview freshly-minted Ohio State linebackers coach James Laurinaitis, as well as new safeties coach Matt Guerrieri this afternoon. Today's show will focus mostly on the Buckeyes' 2024 linebacking corps, specifically whether this group is good enough to get the Buckeyes where they want to go. Who will be the two starters? Who will be the top backups? Is Sonny Styles definitely going to move down to LB, or might he stay at safety? Or might he play several different positions? Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss all of that, take a look at Ohio State's 2024 safeties and more. All of that is coming your way on the Tuesday 5ish. Animal instincts | 2024 defense shaping up to be elite | 2-year extension for LJ | Holt's replacement?

The Little Animal got a big promotion. James Laurinaitis is now Ohio State's linebackers coach after serving as a grad assistant in 2023. Now, to be clear, Laurinaitis basically ran the LB room last season, but now he's a full-fledged position coach. How will this impact the Buckeyes on the field? What about on the recruiting front? What we also find interesting is that Ohio State's defense is shaping up to be elite in 2024. You could of course argue Jim Knowles' unit was elite in 2023 as the Buckeyes finished No. 3 in the country in total defense and No. 2 in scoring defense. Outstanding numbers? Definitely. Skewed just a bit because of an historically bad offensive season for many Big Ten teams? Sure. (The four-best defenses in the country last year were Big Ten teams, including Penn State, Michigan and Iowa.) But it was still an outstanding defense. However, we have little doubt the 2024 defense will be even better. The one area of possible concern is at linebacker, but the Buckeyes do have talent there ... and now a former All-American and long-time NFL standout as their LB coach. Also, what do we think about OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson inking a 2-year extension? Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss all things Silver Bullets on the Friday 5ish, who we want as Chris Holtmann's replacement and more. How good of a hiring was this by Ryan Day and what does it say about how Day sees his own role moving forward? What will Chip Kelly bring to Buckeyes' offense?

What do we expect out of Chip Kelly as Ohio State's offensive coordinator? What can he do specifically to enhance Ryan Day's offense, which has been one of the best offenses in college football during the 5-year Day era? Bucknuts Morning 5: Ryan Day to meet with media today | Holtmann's last stand?

It certainly is not your classic "signing day" but it is still a big day on the Ohio State football beat. Walton's World | What's up with O'Brien?

When Tim Walton was hired two years ago by Ryan Day, we thought it was a solid move. Oh boy were we wrong. It was a grand slam home run. Walton is an excellent secondary coach and continues to recruit like a madman. His latest get is Na'eem Offord, the No. 2 cornerback in the country in the 2025 class. This is after landing the nation's No. 1 corner recruit -- Devin Sanchez -- just last month. Speaking of Ohio State coaches, what is going on with Bill O'Brien? Is he going to stay at Ohio State as offensive coordinator/QB coach? Or is he going to take the head coaching job at Boston College? Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle will discuss all of that, take questions from the live audience and more. All of that is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Even more good news on horizon for Buckeyes? | Who will step up at linebacker?

There is plenty on the docket on today's show as Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle. Ohio State has already landed the No. 1 cornerback in the country in the 2025 class -- Devin Sanchez. Could the No. 2 corner, Na'eem Offord, be next to join the fold? Also, what will happen at linebacker for the Buckeyes in 2024? Who will step up among Cody Simon, C.J. Hicks, Gabe Powers ... and maybe ... Sonny Styles? Might Ohio State land right tackle Ozzy Trapilo from Boston College if he enters the transfer portal? If not, is Josh Fryar still going to be the starting RT? Could Luke Montgomery win the job? We also take questions from our live audience and more. Monday morning quarterbacking: Expectations for Will Howard | Who will be backup?

We have an unprecedented situation at Ohio State with five scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, four of which have never gone through spring ball at OSU. Also, we cannot imagine all five QBs still being on the roster when camp begins in August. So, who is most likely to transfer after spring? Our favorite moves this month from OSU

It has been a January like none other for Ohio State's football program (alright, not counting early 2003 and early 2015 when the Buckeyes won national titles, but we digress). What have been our favorite moves in particular? Is the transfer of Caleb Downs atop the list? What about the other transfers, such as Will Howard, Julian Sayin, Seth McLaughlin, Quinshon Judkins and more? Or what about all the talented upperclassmen who decided to make one more run in Columbus and put the NFL on hold for a year. Is a guy like Denzel Burke or Emeka Egbuka (or fill in the blank of another upperclassman) returning at the top of the list? Could it be the hiring of Bill O'Brien as offensive coordinator and Ryan Day taking on more of a "CEO" role? Or is it the boosters stepping up and making Ohio State a major player in the NIL game? Yes, we get it. "All of the above" would be the correct answer. However, on today's show, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle are going to talk about their favorite storylines from this month. That and much more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
