Did NCAA mess up NIL? | Sonny Styles to start at WILL? | Bucknutters had more rushing yards than McCord
We opened the floor for questions from our Bucknuts subscribers and they delivered. On today's show, Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle will discuss the following: * Did the NCAA mess up NIL? Can anything be done about it? * What statistical numbers does Will Howard have to hit this year for the Buckeyes to achieve their goals? By the way, do you know how many rushing yards Kyle McCord had last year? It's less than you had. For real. * Is Sonny Styles now the favorite to start at the WILL linebacker spot? * On the recruiting front, what are the latest vibes with David Sanders Jr.? And how concerned are we that Na'eem Offord is potentially still looking around? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Get(ting) Carter? | SEC territory targets
Jarquez Carter is ready to make his call. The Class of 2025 defensive tackle from Newberry, Fla., will announce his college choice on Thursday. If Carter chooses Ohio State over Miami (Fla.), Florida and several others, it would give the Buckeyes six defensive linemen in this cycle. We (would) love that. Carter is not the lone Ohio State target ready to pick a school. Trey McNutt is ready. Will Conroy is ready not to go to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are also chasing several prospects in SEC territory. Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to provide clarity. It's what they do. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Who will lead the team in rushing? Who will lead the team in sacks? Who will lead the team in receiving yards? Who will lead the team in tackles? Which teams will finish in the top-5 in the Big Ten in order? Who will be the four conference champions who all get a bye in the 12-team CFP? Will Michigan make the CFP? Unfortunate news on TC Caffey | Expectations for James Peoples, Sam Williams-Dixon?
Unfortunately, Ohio State will likely be without third-year sophomore running back T.C. Caffey this season due to a knee injury, per multiple sources. The Buckeyes have an excellent 1-2 punch at tailback with TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, but there is a lack of depth behind them. The only other two scholarship RBs on the roster are true freshmen James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon. What do we expect out of Peoples and Williams-Dixon this season? Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss that, plus: * If any of the top four wide receivers go down this year, who would be the next man up? Bryson Rodgers? Jayden Ballard? Mylan Graham? * What is JBook's vibe on the upcoming announcements of Vernell Brown III and David Sanders Jr? * Any concerns that one or more of OSU's current 2025 verbal commits could flip? Bill Kurelic had the scoop on the site this morning and we'll get into that. All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Ducks hunting | Ohioans on the clock
Ohio State is streaking towards the No. 1 overall class in the 247Sports recruiting rankings. Guess who's making a serious run at the same crown? Them Ducks. We also have two Ohioans to discuss - Trey McNutt and Will Conroy. Will that duo need to adjust to the Western time zone for college? And invest in galoshes? It's possible. Oregon is not only predicated to be chief competition for B1G on-field supremacy, Dan Lanning and Co. are recruiting with a purpose (and Nike backing, let's be honest). We dive deep on that emerging threat and so much more with Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Sanders Jr. sets announcement date | Buckeyes in good spot?
Now we know when the nation's No. 1 offensive lineman will announce where he will be playing college football. David Sanders Jr. released his final four of Ohio State, Tennessee, Georgia and Nebraska on Sunday, and added that he will make his choice public on Aug. 17. Exactly two weeks from the Buckeyes' season-opener against Akron. Many feel this is a two-horse race between OSU and Tennessee. What are the vibes from the Buckeyes' perspective? Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle discuss that, plus: * If Sanders does not select Ohio State, where will the Buckeyes turn in OL recruiting? * Saturday was a big day for OSU on the recruiting trail as James Laurinaitis landed 5-star linebacker Riley Pettijohn. The nation's No. 1 class for 2025 just keeps getting better. * Plus, we discuss the 2024 team, field questions from our live audience and more. All of that is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Is Ohio State in for another recruiting BOOM on Independence Day eve? Four-star DE Justin Hill from Cincinnati Winton Woods will announce his decision today and it is sounding good for the Buckeyes. Also, will 4-star linebacker Riley Pettijohn select the Buckeyes when he makes his announcement on Saturday? That one appears too close to call, even at this late stage. Will OSU hold off Bama, UGA, Ducks for #1 recruiting class? | Will D-line be consistently disruptive?
Ohio State still holds the top spot in the 2025 national recruiting rankings, but it is shaping up to be a fantastic finish between the Buckeyes, Alabama, Georgia and Oregon. Who might be on commit watch for OSU this month? Also, can Ohio State's defensive line be consistently disruptive in big games this season? We have been touting the virtues of this D-line, but will they actually prove they are among the nation's best when the lights come on? More commitments coming ... soon? | Cooking with Jake
The game of football is won in the trenches. You've heard this. We have to agree. It starts and ends with the big guys up front on offense and defense. WRU? Sure. QB factory? Affirmative. DBU? We can make a strong argument. But the trenches ... the trenches. Which brings us to defensive linemen Trajen Odom and Maxwell Roy. Two guys that get it done in their respective high school trenches. Our Bill Kurelic has rolled Crystal Balls for both to do the same for Ohio State. We get you totally up to speed on that duo and their impending commitments, offer info on David Sanders, Dorian Brew, Jordan Davison and others before a deep dive on new offensive lineman commitment Jake Cook. Ohio State's (potentially) epic NFL Draft class | Draft guru Dane Brugler joins show
We know the Buckeyes have a star-studded crew of veteran talent this season. That's what happens when a class replete with NFL Draft worthy talent basically all decide on another season with Ohio State. The Natty is the focus. But after that, the 2025 NFL Draft promises to be a Buckeye-flavored event. That's why Dane Brugler is here. The Athletic's NFL Draft Expert recently penned an article theorizing Ohio State could boast the biggest draft class - EVER - next April at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisc. It's not hyperbole. An argument can be made Brugler was conservative in his estimate. We dive deep with Dane on a potentially epic class, hypothesize which Buckeyes will be picked and when before taking questions submitted via The Front Row. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Let's talk O-line recruiting
Ohio State has the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation for 2025, so of course we are going to focus on the negatives. Just joking. However, what are thoughts on the Buckeyes' offensive line recruiting efforts thus far? They landed a great in-state offensive tackle in Carter Lowe, who is ranked as the No. 33 overall player in the country by 247Sports. However, will Justin Frye be able to reel in any of the top OL prospects from out of state? Dave Biddle and Matt Baxendell discuss that on today's show, plus: * The Sporting News ranked Ohio State as having the seventh-toughest schedule in the Big Ten this season. The publication ranked Michigan as having the toughest slate. Thoughts? * What do we think about the Buckeyes' special teams this year? Can this finally be a weapon and not a weakness? Buckeyes land elite safety, vault to No. 1 class in the land
The beat goes on for Ohio State's 2025 recruiting class as the Buckeyes landed the No. 2 safety prospect in the country, Faheem Delane. The Buckeyes had already boasted the best class in the nation in terms of average player ranking. Well, now they are the No. 1 class when equating both quality and quantity ... and they only have 14 commits in the class. OSU's average player ranking that is north of 95 is almost unheard of. What is the most-improved position group on Ohio State's team this year?
What is the most-improved position group on Ohio State's team this year? That is the main topic Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle tackle on today's show. Could it be the offensive line? What about running back with not only TreVeyon Henderson returning (and hopefully staying healthy) but welcoming in Quinshon Judkins as a transfer? Or even though the Buckeyes' secondary was very good last year, could the answer to the main topic of the show be the defensive backs. Not only did Denzel Burke, Jordan Hancock and Lathan Ransom decide to return for one more year, but Davison Igbinosun is also back. Furthermore, the Buckeyes landed the best player in the transfer portal regardless of position, safety Caleb Downs. Could it be quarterback with Will Howard likely replacing Kyle McCord? Could it be a different position like the linebackers? There are no right or wrong answers here (unless we say otherwise) but we thought it would be a fun topic to discuss. We will also talk the latest on the recruiting front and more. That is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Schools can now pay players directly | What this means for OSU, future of college sports
A landmark settlement on Thursday between the NCAA and three federal antitrust cases will pave the way for Ohio State and other major conference members to directly pay their players. The settlement will pay "roughly $2.7 billion in damages to past and current athletes over the next 10 years," per ESPN. But the aspect of the settlement that we will all remember is that the parties have agreed to a revenue-sharing system where schools can pay up to $20 million to their players. But how will that $20 million be divided? Will the football players get the vast majority of that money, since they are the ones generating the most revenue? And will it be equally distributed among all players? Will the star players get more? And how exactly would that be determined? Yes, we have a lot of questions about this. Another one being ... what is going to happen to a lot of the non-revenue sports? Are we going to look up 5 or 10 years from now and see far less non-revenue sports across collegiate athletics? Also: Are we headed down a path where the Big Ten and SEC break away from the NCAA? Dave Biddle and Jonah Booker discuss all of that and much more on the Friday 5ish. Rashida lawsuit v Florida start of a trend? | Buckeye 'crootin updates | O-line optimism?
Jaden Rashida's $10 million lawsuit against Florida, including head coach Billy Napier, is fascinating. Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * Thoughts on the Buckeyes' 2025 recruiting class and what might transpire over the next two months. * Ohio State's 2024 offensive line is the biggest question mark on the team. But is there reason for optimism when analyzing the Buckeyes' O-line? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish.
