Buckeyes speaking Ffrench? | Moore intrigue | Hoban's heroes
Is there room at the WRU Inn? Of course there is. There's been lots of chatter surrounding elite '25 pass catchers Jaime French and Dakorien Moore. Are the Buckeyes legit contenders for each? What other receivers rank high on the Hartline Board? Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to discuss that. Is that all? Hardly. We dive deep on Na'eem Offord, Vernell Brown, Trey McNutt, Dorian Brew and others. And as if that was not enough, we have exclusive video from Akron Hoban workouts featuring several (possible) future Buckeyes. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! OSU's title odds continue to improve | Vibes on Trey McNutt? | Marv sued by Fanatics
We bounce around to several Ohio State topics on today's show as Dan Rubin joins Dave Biddle. Items on the docket include: * When we did the show last Monday, the Buckeyes' odds to win the 2024 national championship were +425. That was an improvement over the +500 odds that OSU had in late April. Well, now the odds have improved once again. Ohio State is now listed at +350 to win it all, just barely behind Georgia at +325. Then it's a big jump to the team with the third-lowest odds -- Texas -- at +750. Oregon is next at +900. We just find it interesting that the Buckeyes' odds improve seemingly each week, while the odds for the vast majority of other teams have held steady. * The nation's No. 1 safety recruit, Trey McNutt, is going to take all of his official visits between May 31 and the end of June. What are our vibes as far as the Buckeyes landing McNutt? * Any concern that Ohio State might lose the nation's No. 2 corner, Na'eem Offord? Or is he just having some fun with the process and there is nothing to worry about here? * Here is one we didn't expect to see: Fanatics is suing Marvin Harrison Jr., claiming he breached a "term sheet" agreement last year. * Mike Conley Jr. continues to have a very good -- and frankly underrated -- NBA career. Conley, 36, is the starting point guard of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who upset the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals last night. It was 17 years ago when Conley helped lead the Buckeyes to the 2007 national championship game. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. It is Friday and that means Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle talking shop on the Morning 5. Alford remains committed to the Buckeyes in their 2025 class. * However, cornerback Blake Woodby de-committed on Thursday. * Will OSU add Dorian Brew and Trey McNutt to their 2025 class? Analyzing Buckeyes' QBs | OSU has inside track with 4-star OT?
It is time to analyze Ohio State's 2024 quarterback room. On today's show, Dave Biddle and Dan Rubin take a close look at the Buckeyes' QBs, including the projected depth chart, expectations and more. Also on the docket: * The Buckeyes might have the inside track on landing a 4-star offensive tackle who took an unofficial visit to OSU this past weekend. We explain. * Per the betting odds, who are the projected top-12 teams in college football this season? Where do the Buckeyes stand? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Bucknuts Happy Hour: Why players don't always transfer | Buckeyes still looking in transfer portal?
Ohio State has not been one of the schools that has gone all in on the transfer portal. Under Ryan Day the last few years, the Buckeyes have continued to focus on adding high school talent and taken a pick-and-choose approach to the transfer portal, finding talent where they need it and filling holes when necessary. What has made the Scarlet and Gray successful early in the transfer portal era, however, is that Ohio State hasn't lost key players at important positions. Day has made it clear that retaining talent is just as important, if not more so, than adding collegiate players. It is important that the Buckeyes are developing most of their players for themselves and not other programs. But the Scarlet and Gray have lost some players to the transfer portal over the last offseasons. In this day and age, this is unavoidable. Bucknuts looks back at the 2022 offseason and the players who elected to depart the Ohio State program. Where did they go, and how have they performed since leaving Columbus? Just how loaded is this OSU secondary? | Chances of landing David Sanders Jr.?
Just how loaded is Ohio State's 2024 secondary? Well, on paper, it might be the best we've seen come through these parts ... and that's saying a lot. On today's show, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle take a close look at OSU's 2024 DBs, plus: * Two safeties from the portal will be making official visits to OSU this weekend. Will the Buckeyes land either of them? * As it turns out, defensive tackle Tywone Malone has two seasons of eligibility remaining. The confusion stemmed from OSU's official roster stating he had only one year left. * What are the chances the Buckeyes land the No. 1 OT in the country in the 2025 class, David Sanders Jr.? * What does JBook think about OSU's chances of landing some of the other offensive linemen they have offered, such as 4-star Jackson Lloyd from California? When Chip comes calling | Ohio talent show on display
What's it like to have Chip Kelly walk into your living room? Even better, what if he came to offer you a scholarship? Impactful. Kelly and the rest of Ohio State's staff are out on the road searching for the next Buckeyes. Where are they going and who are they seeing? Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter bring you totally up to speed on the talent acquisition efforts of Ohio State's staff. By the way, those efforts include hosting several key targets this weekend, including a pair of defensive backs also being courted in Ann Arbor. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Buckeyes' O-line breakdown
On what is a loaded roster, the biggest question for Ohio State entering the 2024 season is the offensive line. On today's show, Dave Biddle and Steve Helwagen do a deep dive on the Buckeyes' O-line and what to expect out of them this season. What does the projected starting five look like with spring ball a few weeks in the rear view mirror? Who will be the top backups? Is there any chance OSU will add an offensive lineman in the portal, or are the pickings far too slim on that front? All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Recruiting info extravaganza | Sanders, McNutt, Grady updates
Quality over quantity. That was the WHAC vibe over the weekend. It wasn't the overflow-type red carpet weekend we often discuss before and after ad nauseam. No, Ohio State hosted an smaller, elite group that included legitimately high-profile prospects. Who was here? How did it go? Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter join to inform you on the weekend's visitors, Mark's two-week Ohio journey and where the Buckeyes stand with a certain Texan. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Running back breakdown | Moore to come | Shopping for safety in portal?
Today's show delves into various topics about Ohio State football with Dave Biddle and Dan Rubin. Up first on the docket is our breakdown of the Buckeyes' running backs this season. Will TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins prove they are the best 1-2 punch at the RB position in the country this season? How do we feel about true freshmen James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon? Will third-year sophomore T.C. Caffey be put on scholarship and what do we expect from him? Then Dan will share his vibe on redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jason Moore, who Larry Johnson referred to as the "ideal 3-tech in our defense" during spring ball. Also, we are hearing the Buckeyes are looking at safeties in the transfer portal, just for depth purposes. Right now there are only five scholarship safeties on the roster, although freshman Leroy Roker will raise that number to six when he enrolls next month. The team also has a talented walk-on safety in junior Inky Jones (who is another candidate to get bumped up to scholarship status). All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Position breakdown: Defensive line | Surprised no OSU QBs transferred?
It is time for another position breakdown on the show and today Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle do a deep dive on Ohio State's defensive line. What can be expected from this unit in 2024? How will the Buckeyes' D-line measure up against the nation's best? What does the depth look like? Also, it appears as though those boats were in fact burned. Devin Brown didn't enter the transfer portal. Nor did any of OSU's other four scholarship quarterbacks Does this surprise us? Or not so much? Position breakdown: Tight end | Dust settles on portal
The offseason is in full swing and we are going to do a series of position breakdowns on the show. We figured we would start with the glamor position for Ohio State: the tight ends. Wait, what? Alright, it might not quite be the marquee position for the Buckeyes, but it will be an important part of Chip Kelly's offense. How is the depth chart shaping up with fifth-year senior Gee Scott Jr., fourth-year junior Will Kacmarek who transferred in from Ohio University, sophomore Jelani Thurman, third-year sophomore Bennett Christian and fourth-year junior walk-on (who might not be a walk-on for much longer) Patrick Gurd? What can be expected from the group? How much 12 personnel will the Buckeyes deploy under Kelly's guidance? Dave Biddle and Matt Baxendell discuss that on today's show, plus: * It looks like the dust has settled on the transfer portal from OSU's perspective. There are a total of six Buckeyes who entered the portal during this window, but other than perhaps Dallan Hayden -- who was in line to be the No. 3 tailback -- it does not appear as though OSU lost anyone who was in the plans for meaningful playing time. Are we surprised none of the Buckeyes' quarterbacks entered the portal? * We take questions from our live audience on a variety of Ohio State football topics. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Over/under 14.5 Buckeyes drafted in 2025? | Shaky offseason for Diebler?
Could Ohio State set the record with 15 draft picks next year? We think there is a very good chance as we are setting the fake odds at our fake sportsbook at 14.5 players from OSU drafted in 2025. Also, the transfer portal closes after tomorrow and so far OSU has avoided any notable departures. Also, has it been a disappointing offseason for Jake Diebler and Ohio State's basketball program thus far? Steve Helwagen, Patrick Murphy and Dave Biddle discuss that and much more on the Monday 5ish. Linebacker expectations | 'Tat 5' wants 2010 season restored
There were some questions about Ohio State's linebackers entering spring. However, leaving spring there is quite a bit of optimism that the Buckeyes are set up very nicely at linebacker. The projected starters look good with fifth-year senior Cody Simon and junior C.J. Hicks. Also turning in good springs were junior Sonny Styles and third-year sophomore Gabe Powers, who are both sure to play a lot this fall in James Laurinaitis' rotation. Another young linebacker to keep an eye on is sophomore Arvell Reese. Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show and takes a close look at the Buckeyes' situation at linebacker for 2024, plus: * The "Tat 5" is calling for the 2010 season to be restored, including all statistics. In light of Reggie Bush getting his Heisman back, it makes sense. Will it work? Probably not, but we're on their side and we hope it does. Keep in mind the Buckeyes were 12-1 that season, with a Big Ten championship and a Sugar Bowl win. And of course Jim Tressel's ninth win over Michigan in 10 tries. * The first round of the NFL Draft is tonight, beginning at 8 ET. Will Marvin Harrison Jr. be the first non-QB off the board? * It is slim pickings in the transfer portal right now. The best offensive tackle in the portal is Andrew Chamblee from Arkansas, who started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2023 at left tackle and earned SEC All-Freshman honors. He was a 4-star prospect coming out of high school (No. 18 OT, No. 204 overall prospect in 2022 class, per 247Sports) but is ranked as a 3-star in the transfer portal. 247Sports ranks him as just the No. 22 OT and the No. 445 overall player to enter the portal since the end of the 2023 season. Do we think he would be an automatic upgrade compared to OSU's current tackles? Yeah, probably not. All of that and more is coming your way on the Thursday 5ish. Howard QB1? Which QB (if any) transfers? | Add OT via portal?
We talk a lot about Ohio State's quarterbacks on today's show as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. How confident are we that Will Howard will be the Buckeyes' starter and perform well? If Howard is the starter, it seems likely that another quarterback will transfer. Who might that be? Or is there a legit chance all five scholarship QBs stick around for the 2024 season? Also, are the Buckeyes looking to add an offensive tackle via the transfer portal. Will they find one? On Tuesday, The Athletic quoted several anonymous NFL scouts who say they prefer Malik Nabers over Marvin Harrison Jr. in tomorrow's NFL Draft. Heresy? Or is there something to this? All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. St. Clair superlatives | Buckeyes staff hits road
The future is so bright we gotta we (goodr) shades. We are talking quarterback and Ohio State, of course. Currently, the Buckeyes QB is an overflow talent situation and we are monitoring ... closely. On display this past weekend down the street from The Shoe at Upper Arlington High, the younger signal callers took the stage. Ohio ... QBs ... big stage ... must be time for future Buckeye Tavien St. Clair. The Class of 2025 star earned an Elite 11 invite with Bill Kurelic and other celebrities in attendance. Feeling a Draft | How many Buckeyes will be taken next year? | Okpara bails | Howard's pocket presence
It is NFL Draft week and that is cause for celebration. It will be a light year for Ohio State's standards with perhaps just five Buckeyes hearing their names called this week. However, that is perfectly fine with us because it means a bunch of guys came back who would have at least been second-day (second-third round) picks. Speaking of all those guys coming back, just how many OSU players will be drafted next year? If we set the over/under at 12.5, which way are you rolling? Also, center Felix Okpara is taking his basketball and going ... well ... not home. But he has decided Ohio State will no longer be his home as he entered the transfer portal yesterday. What led up to this? What do we think of the job that Jake Diebler is doing overall thus far? We close the show talking about Ohio State quarterback Will Howard. The more film we watch of him, the more impressed we are with his pocket presence. Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle discuss all of that and more on the Monday 5ish. Wrapping up what we learned during spring ball | Quiet portal so far
What did we learn about Ohio State's 2024 football team during spring ball? How do we feel about the Buckeyes heading into this season? Also, the transfer portal has been very quiet for OSU thus far. With heavy emphasis on the last two words of the previous sentence. Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss that in detail on the Friday 5ish. Georgia on our mind | Devin Sanchez superlatives
It used to be a real easy answer. The question: Which state produces the best Division I football talent? It was always Florida, California and Texas. And those states still produce a ton of talent. But right now the state boasting the BEST talent is Georgia. And wouldn't ya know, Ohio State is doing work in the Bulldogs' backyard. Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to dive deep on four elite Georgians that visited Ohio State this past weekend and each left with an offer (if they didn't have one already). Also, in honor of Devin Sanchez officially shutting down his recruitment, we show you why it's worth being totally geeked about the Houston, Texas native. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Tackling OSU's spring game | Will Buckeyes add players via portal? Lose players?
Ohio State's spring game is tomorrow (noon ET; FOX) and we were very pleased to learn that after a brief "thudding-up" format to begin the scrimmage, that the Buckeyes will actually be tackling. Yes, real football! Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss that, plus: * Will Ohio State look to add players via the transfer portal when the window opens on Monday? * Is it a safe bet that the Buckeyes will lose a handful of scholarship players to the portal? * Is anyone else surprised that we're sitting here at the end of spring ball and we're having legit conversations about whether true freshman Julian Sayin is going to be the starting quarterback this year? We're not "sayin" he's going to be the starter, but just the fact that it is a serious discussion is something we did not see coming when spring ball kicked off. Meeting Carlos Locklyn | Grab RB from portal? | Sayin hype | Spring game format
It is a big day on the Ohio State football beat as the media will meet with new running backs coach Carlos Locklyn for the first time at noon. Head coach Ryan Day will also field questions from reporters. As for Locklyn, he is inheriting an excellent room that is headlined by TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. However, the Buckeyes did just lose Dallan Hayden to the portal. Does this mean OSU needs to find a running back via the portal, simply for depth purposes? It is one of the many questions we are curious to hear Locklyn and Day answer today. Also, is there fire to go along with all of this Julian Sayin smoke? Sources we trust continue to tell us yes and it will be interesting to see how the true freshman quarterback performs at Saturday's spring game. Speaking of the spring game, there are still some details to be ironed out, but we now know most of the format. Steve Helwagen and Dave Biddle will explain said format on today's show. And we will close with some quick OSU basketball discussion. What players from the portal is Jake Diebler most likely to land and how many players from the portal will the Buckeyes end up signing? Will one QB eclipse the other? | Bronny to OSU?
Ohio State's spring game is just five days away and we are of course anxious to see a lot of things from the Buckeyes on Saturday. Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle talk in-depth about OSU football on today's show and what we are most curious to see from the Scarlet & Gray. First and foremost, will there be any separation between Devin Brown and Will Howard at quarterback? Or will that competition continue in preseason camp? We will also field questions from our live audience about Buckeye football. We will finish the show talking some college basketball. Ohio State is going hard after Bronny James and OSU is the slight betting favorite to land him. How much would you like to see LeBron's son suit up for the Buckeyes? Also, is Purdue going to end the Big Ten's 24-year drought of not winning a national championship tonight against UConn? It will be a tough task as the Boilermakers are 7-point underdogs to the defending champs. And John Calipari is leaving Kentucky for Arkansas? We did not see that coming. Not like a certain eclipse that will happen today. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. How will RB carries be divided for Buckeyes?
Ryan Day allowed Tony Alford to decide how to divide the playing time at running back for Ohio State, so we presume the same will be true with Carlos Locklyn coaching the Buckeyes' RBs. Day has not been shy about calling it "the best running back room in the country" and that begs a question: How will the carries be divided between TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins? Are we expecting something in the 50/50 range presuming they both stay healthy? How much action will Dallan Hayden see this year? What about true freshman James Peoples? Also, the more we hear about Locklyn, the more we are impressed. Does he have one of the most interesting backgrounds of any Ohio State coach in recent memory? We sure think so and we cannot wait to interview him when he arrives in Columbus. We think Day hit another home run here in what has been an incredible offseason for his program. Speaking of interviewing Ohio State coaches and players, here is the list of names that will be available after practice today at 11:15 a.m: Judkins, Hayden, James Laurinaitis, Matt Guerrieri, Caleb Downs, Josh Simmons and Mitchell Melton. It has not taken Laurinaitis long to show his recruiting chops and zero Bucknutters are surprised about that. Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle discuss all of that on today's show. Also, what is Bax's take on the quarterback situation for the Buckeyes? That is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Catching up with Monica | Does Paris Johnson help OSU recruit O-linemen?
We are thrilled to welcome back Monica Daniels -- Paris Johnson Jr.'s mother -- to the show today to get her unique perspective on a multitude of topics. Does Paris help Ohio State in the recruitment of offensive linemen? He is not allowed to do certain things per NCAA rules, but he is allowed to talk to recruits when they are on campus and things of that nature. What advice does Monica give to parents of recruits who are considering the Buckeyes? What has this ride been like for Monica and her family, with Paris becoming an All-American at OSU and then becoming the No. 6 overall pick of the draft by the Arizona Cardinals? (And playing every snap for the Cardinals as a rookie.) Monica also fields a few questions from our subscribers, such as "Did Paris know during or after the 2022 TTUN game that they were stealing our signs and cheating?" As well as "Do the parents still do gatherings at home and road games like you all did? Do you still participate in those?" All of that and much more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish.
