Should Kyle McCord play against Rutgers regardless of C.J. Stroud's health? Monday Madness

Nathan and Doug took another look at Kyle McCord's performance against Akron and compared notes on the freshman's debut. They also broke down the usual Monday Madness categories, including what threat if any Rutgers poses to the Buckeyes, a bad week for the Big Ten West and Clemson's drop from national contention. Ohio State beats Akron postgame: Kyle McCord, pass rush, and what happened with K'Vaughan Pope?

Ohio State beat Akron 59-7 on Saturday in a game that was most interesting than just another blowout by the Buckeyes of an overmatched MAC team. On this postgame Buckeye Talk podcast, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means address three primary areas: The play of Kyle McCord, who started as C.J. Stroud rested his aching shoulder, and what McCord's night means for the future of the QB position. The pass rush that led to nine sacks of Akron. How much of that showed that the defense could be after three games of not getting after the passer? The blowup on the sideline of linebacker K'Vaughan Pope, who went to the locker room and then tweeted a derogatory message about Ohio State during the game. There are also some quick thoughts on Chris Olave's lack of targets the past two games, and Clemson's loss to North Carolina State. Thanks to listening to another pod episode from cleveland.com. Ohio State vs. Akron game preview: The Buckeyes will start a different quarterback

On this Friday Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means preview the Buckeyes' game vs. Akron at 7:30 Saturday night in Ohio Stadium. They make their picks for the game, and are joined by betting genius and friend of the pod Tyler Shoemaker to discuss how the Buckeyes have done against the line this season, and what the right play is Saturday with Ohio State a seven-touchdown favorite. But the big news is that starting QB C.J. Stroud will rest his sore shoulder in this game and play only in an emergency situation. That means either Kyle McCord or Jack Miller will start. The guys discuss how that might go, and what it could mean for the future of the QB position with the Buckeyes, depending on how things look against Akron. Covering the Buckeyes, Part 1: Beat wars, message board culture and an inside look at Ohio State reporting

Welcome to Part 1 of a two-part Buckeye Talk examining life inside the Ohio State beat. On this first episode (the second ep is immediately after this in your podcast feed) Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means start off by talking about what happened at Buckeye Scoop, a site that coverages Ohio State that recently saw one co-founder of the site, Marc Givler, sue the two other co-founders, Kirk Barton and Ken Stickney. From there, Doug, Nathan and Stephen branched off to talk about message boards, reporting and how they cover the Buckeyes. (0:00 to 49:49). Then several guests from other Ohio State sites visited to discuss their views on the subject and how they cover the team: Bill Landis and Ari Wasserman, former Buckeye Talk co-hosts now working at The Athletic (49:50 to 1:17:35) Ben Koo, an OSU alum and fan who founded the sports media site Awful Announcing and has knowledge of the Buckeyes and a big-picture media view (1:17:36 to 1:39:05) Bill Rabinowitz and Joey Kaufman of the Columbus Dispatch (1:39:06 to 2:03:54) And then there's a quick wrapup by Doug. In a week when the Buckeyes are seven-touchdown favorites over Akron, this is something a little different from cleveland.com. We hope you enjoy it, and don't forget to listen to Part 2 after this. Should Ryan Day use the Akron game to get Ohio State's other quarterbacks in-game experience or keep relying on C.J. Stroud?

Ryan Day picked C.J. Stroud to be Ohio State football's next starting quarterback. He also built up a room filled with five-stars and top 100 recruits so that he always had options. Stroud has had moments of greatness but has also gone through plenty of growing pains. But through three weeks it's not exactly a no-brainer that he's the long-term solution. A game against Akron potentially provides a chance for Kyle McCord and Jack Miller to get their first snaps of the season and finally throw a college pass. But there's a fine line Day must walk in throwing out the other options, especially if the one he picked isn't 100 percent healthy. As the Buckeyes prepare to face the Zips, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Doug Lesmerise OSU's quarterback situation on this Wednesday episode. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk. Does the threat of a crushing regular-season defeat make college football more exciting?

This big Thursday Buckeye Talk is a lot about feelings and a little about psychology. Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means have been digging into the football specfics and the potential on-field fallout from Ohio State's loss to Oregon since it happened Saturday. This is a little more big picture. With the help of the opinions and survey votes of text subscribers, Doug, Nathan and Stephen examine the feelings around a loss like this one. It hurts OSU fans, obviously. But is the threat of a devastating loss a critical component of what makes the college football regular season great? And how much would the feeling around a big loss change if there was a 12-team playoff and much more room for error in the regular season? Interesting answers, and some relevant and insightful opinions from the texters on this topic. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Will Ohio State football make its third College Football Playoff appearance under Ryan Day? Mark it Down Monday

Ryan Day's first two seasons as Ohio State football's head coach provided the program with its first back-to-back trip to the College Footall Playoff. Both of those trips came with Justin Fields as his quarterback. Now C.J. Stroud takes over and will try to lead the Buckeyes to a third trip, but this time winning the national title. OSU isn't the only team with the new quarterback this season, as Stroud is joined by Alabama's Bryce Young and Clemson's D.J. Uiagalelei. As college football's Big Three press the reset button, other programs such as Georgia and Oklahoma can view the 2021 season as a chance to finally take the next step. The Sooners have as many CFP trips as Ohio State but haven't won a game, while the Bulldogs' lone trip in 2017 resulted in a loss to the Crimson Tide in the title game. On this edition of Mark it Down Monday, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Doug Lesmerises gave their four seeds for the playoff, their national championship matchup, and the eventual national champion. They also asked their Buckeye Talk text subscribers to do the same. As college football returns to normalcy in 2021, it could provide a chance for the sports' four most prominent programs to finally all be together on the biggest stage. Or it could give a chance for new teams to get their shot at a national title. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
