Basketball rapid fire: NCAA hopes, faith level in Chris Holtmann, the changing rotation and more

On this Monday Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means and Doug Lesmerises answer almost 20 questions from text subscribers about the basketball Buckeyes, after a week that included a huge road win at Illinois and a disappointing road loss at Maryland. What's the best and worst the Buckeyes could do in the NCAA Tournament? What should be the starting lineup and rotation? Should Ced Russell play more minutes? How much better will the backcourt be next year? Should Chris Holtmann try to rest some of his best players down the stretch? Would it be better for the Buckeyes to lose early in the Big Ten Tournament? What's the level of faith in Holtmann right now? Are E.J. Liddell and Malaki Branham one of the best duos in the country, and how far can they carry the Buckeyes? This covered a lot of ground, so thanks for listening to another Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Learn more about your ad choices. Ohio State vs. Cincinnati, 2002, and why it will never happen again: Buckeye ReTalkable

Buckeye Talk is back with another Buckeye ReTalkable, this time reliving the 2002 Ohio State vs. Cincinnati game in Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. Why? Because Cincinnati is the football capital of Ohio right now with what the Bearcats and Bengals did this season, so Cincinnati football is hot. And this game, 20 years ago, would have been the biggest moment in Bearcats football history to that point if they had been able top pull off the upset. Meanwhile, No. 6 Ohio State was without an injured Maurice Clarett for this game, the Buckeyes put Chris Gamble on defense for the first time in this game, and Craig Krenzel showed off his ability to make winning plays at quarterback at the right time. The game can be watched in a shortened 38-minute version of YouTube, so watch that and listen to this on the latest Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Would an all-Ohio State alum team contend for the Super Bowl?

Doug and Nathan break off of discussing current Buckeyes to discuss the ones who have moved on to the NFL. Would a team made up of only OSU alums be a Super Bowl contender? Obviously few teams can match the pairing of edge rushers and secondary that the former Buckeyes could put on the field. But is the offense powerful enough, and more specifically, is Justin Fields ready to lead a team this talented in the playoffs? Does Ohio State have a better basketball program than Michigan?

On this Monday Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means and Doug Lesmerises discuss Ohio State basketball's collapse against Rutgers and its statement road win over Michigan. Chris Holtmann is 4-1 against Juwan Howard since Howard was hired as the Wolverines' head coach in 2019. So that leads to a question: Despite already winning a Big Ten title and getting a team to the Elite Eight while Holtmann has failed to do either, does the head-to-head record make OSU the better basketball program? We also touch on E.J. Liddell's National Player of the Year candidacy, new 2023 commit Austin Parks and give out thoughts on Super Bowl LVI. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means dig deep on this one while starting to look ahead at the 2022 football season for Ohio State. Then it was onto the receivers, tight ends, running backs and quarterbacks, as each group was analyzed for the projected starters and backups, and then rated as to whether it will be better, not as good or the same as that group last season. The Ohio State 2018 spring football game: Buckeye ReTalkables

It's time to get back to Buckeye ReTalkables, with the 11th edition of Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means reliving a game from Ohio State's past with you. This one is a little weird, but it is timely. With Tate Martell's football career ending this week -- his college career is over and he's focusing on business ventures -- and Joe Burrow leading the Cincinnati Bengals into the playoff this week, the crew decided to revisit the last time those two, and a host of other famous Buckeyes, shared a field. It's the 2018 spring football game, which proved to be the culmination of the quarterback battle between Burrow and Dwayne Haskins, with Martell involved as the third option. But this game also features Nick Bosa, Chase Young, Paris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Thayer Munford, Josh Myers and a standout performance from Demario McCall, among other things. It was the last spring game for Urban Meyer, and it features Ryan Day and Brian Hartline on the sideline, but not yet in their roles at the heart of Ohio State's success. It's worth a rewatch, and you can find it on YouTube. The goal of the pod -- should the Buckeyes have seen on this day the QB that Burrow would become? And should Martell have gone on to start at quarterback for some other team? Thanks for listening to this Buckeye ReTalkable on Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com.
