Blood Red: Liverpool are feared - and Frank Lampard, Pep Guardiola and every other manager knows it
In the week that saw Jordan Henderson become the first Liverpool captain in 30 years to lift the league title trophy aloft, there are plenty of topics for the Blood Red panel to dive into. The Reds skipper's week got even better today as he picked up the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year award, much to the disappointment of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. Alongside host Matt Addison, the ECHO's LFC correspondent Paul Gorst and writers Connor Dunn and Dan Kay, they discuss both of those events, plus Dejan Lovren's proposed move to Zenit St Petersburg, the 5-3 victory over Frank Lampard's Chelsea that preceded the trophy lift, Jurgen Klopp’s pre-Newcastle United press conference, Adam Lallana's tearful exit, plus lots more. It's a packed show with plenty of talking points to get through, before the panel select their Liverpool XIs for the final Premier League weekend of the 2019/20 season. 'Frank has to learn' | Jurgen Klopp on Lampard comments | Newcastle United vs Liverpool Press Conference
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp addresses comments made by Frank Lampard following Chelsea’s 5-3 defeat to the new Premier League champions at Anfield. Chelsea boss Lampard clashed with the Liverpool bench during Wednesday’s match after Andre Marriner adjudged Mateo Kovacic to have fouled Sadio Mane. Trent Alexander-Arnold scored from the resultant free kick. And after the game Lampard told Sky Sports: “For me, it wasn’t a foul from Kovacic, and there were a lot of things that weren’t going our way. But I’ve not got a problem with Jurgen Klopp. The way he’s managed this team has been fantastic. Fair play to Liverpool Football Club, they’ve won the league, but also don’t get too arrogant with it. That was my point, but it’s done.” Klopp responded to those comments at his press conference today to preview Liverpool’s final game of the season at Newcastle United on Sunday. The Reds manager also responded to captain Jordan Henderson winning the Footballer of the Year award and reports suggesting Dejan Lovren is on the brink of an £11m move to Zenit St Petersburg. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Liverpool’s road to Premier League glory, what happens next, and just what FSG think of Manchester City’s FFP reprieve
Today is the day that Liverpool finally get their hands on the Premier League trophy. It’s the moment that Reds fans have been dreaming of – and we’ll be trying our best to capture that on the Blood Red channel. But on this podcast, we’re going to be a bit reflective, and look back on what has been an incredible season for so many reasons. As well as having a look to the future – and to see what Jurgen Klopp’s brilliant team can do next, whether they need signings, and just what the landscape could look like now that Manchester City have won their appeal against their European ban. And to help us do that, Paul Wheelock speaks to author and journalist Simon Hughes. Simon is a regular on our Allez Les Rouges podcast and he now works alongside our former Liverpool FC correspondent, James Pearce, for The Athletic. The paperback edition of Simon’s book, Allez Allez Allez, is now available to buy, so it was the ideal opportunity to pick up the phone to talk to him about that, his time covering Liverpool, and lots else besides. Analysing Anfield: Salah, Mane and why Liverpool should not sleep on another forward as Chelsea spend big
It’s the final Analysing Anfield preview podcast of the 2019-20 season but before Josh Williams and David Hughes get stuck into the games against Chelsea and Newcastle United, they look at just how newly crowned champions Liverpool somehow managed to lose at Arsenal. That then leads into a discussion about Mohamed Salah who, with a third successive Golden Boot potentially up for grabs, seems to be shooting from anywhere more than ever, and the difference between the Egyptian and his strike-partner Sadio Mane. Did the defeat at Arsenal underline the need for another forward option off the bench? Josh and Dave talk that before moving on to Chelsea, tomorrow's visitors to Anfield, and a side who will have a plethora of attacking options next season given Kai Havertz could be joining Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech at Stamford Bridge, where veteran frontman Olivier Giroud is playing some of the best football of his career. But even with buying some of the best available offensive talent on the market, will Chelsea get close to Liverpool next season? The scouting writers try to answer that question before previewing the match with Frank Lampard’s side and Sunday’s trip to a Newcastle United team who, looking at the underlying numbers, should be in relegation trouble. Billy Beane EXCLUSIVE: The Moneyball man who inspired FSG, Michael Edwards and Liverpool FC's transfer genius
Matt Addison speaks to Moneyball pionner Billy Beane, the man who inspired Liverpool's transfer recruitment strategy with his work with the Oakland Athletics baseball team, for an exclusive podcast. Beane is baseball's version of Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, and was the first to put data, analytics and science into gaining marginal advantages in the transfer market – something the Reds have pretty much perfected in recent years. Beane is the man that Liverpool have looked to follow, so he is the perfect person to shed light on an area that the club try to keep secret. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson are just three examples of how the Reds have used Beane's technique to unearth undervalued gems, and he gives Blood Red a fascinating insight about how the process works. The 58-year-old, who was played by Brad Pitt in the film Moneyball, is a close personal friend of Liverpool owner John W Henry and FSG chairman Tom Werner, while he also knows the club’s ex-sporting director Damien Comolli. Beane provides insight into all three of them, plus current sporting director Edwards, in a rare behind-the-scenes look into FSG and how the Americans, who also own the Boston Red Sox, operate. Analysing Anfield: Instinct around Firmino’s Liverpool drought as Salah puts shooting boots on
Roberto Firmino is one of the first names on the team-sheet for Premier League, European and World champions Liverpool. But after failing to find the net in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burnley, it means the Brazilian striker still hasn't scored a league goal at Anfield since March 2019. Breaking News: Manchester City FFP Champions League ban overturned
Manchester City have had their two-year Champions League ban overturned and fine lowered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. City had been issued the ban in February after Uefa found they had committed 'serious breaches' of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016. But the ban has been overturned after Cas cleared the Manchester club of "disguising equity funds" through sponsorship deals done. City have been fined 10m euros. However, that is reduced from their initial 30m euros fine. Join Guy Clarke and Matt Addison as they discuss the implications of the ruling for Pep Guardiola's side, their biggest rivals Liverpool, and the integrity of the financial model moving forward. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Analysing Anfield: Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and the big difference between Liverpool and Man City
Manchester City v Liverpool. Pep Guardiola v Jurgen Klopp. It’s the big one on Thursday night as the outgoing Premier League champions take on the new Premier League champions at the Etihad. But before Josh Williams and David Alexander Hughes get stuck into what many people thought would be a title decider, the Analysing Anfield lads have a little housekeeping to undertake. After dedicating last week’s show to how Jurgen Klopp has made Liverpool champions, they take a look back at the 0-0 Merseyside derby draw at Everton and the 4-0 home win over Crystal Palace that set up the following night’s title party. But the majority of this superb show is all about City – and their one big difference to the Reds. Josh and David also cast their eyes at Guardiola, and what would have happened if he had taken over Liverpool when Klopp did back in October 2015, the genius that is Kevin De Bruyne, and the areas where Liverpool will look to exploit on Thursday. And they also quickly preview Sunday’s visit of Aston Villa to Anfield. Without giving the game away, they don’t hold out much hope for Villa. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield.
