Jordan Henderson, Jurgen Klopp, and how the Liverpool programmes are produced
Liverpool will definitely win the Premier League by beating Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday and then Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday. That would end the club’s 30-year wait for the league title and it would be celebrated by millions of Reds fans across the world. Sadly Anfield itself won’t be able to host 50,000 of those supporters on Wednesday evening given the match has to be played behind closed doors. But fortunately some traditions will be still in place – including the official matchday programme which, if the title is wrapped up on the night, is sure to be a collector’s item. So for our latest podcast we speak to long-term Liverpool writer Chris McLoughlin, who helps produce the programme for Reach Sport, which belongs to the same company as the Liverpool ECHO. Chris tells what it’s like to work with Jordan Henderson on his captain’s notes and why the Reds skipper, along with manager Jurgen Klopp, take what they contribute to the programme so seriously. Anfield season-ticket holder Chris also reveals the players, past and present, he enjoys and enjoyed speaking to the most, as well as looking back at his time as the editor of the legendary Kop Magazine, which closed five years ago this month. Analysing Anfield: Why Liverpool should be more confident than ever of beating Everton
Despite not losing a Merseyside derby since October 2010, Liverpool have actually won only one of their last seven trips to Goodison Park to face Everton. But the latest episode of Analysing Anfield argues why that record should change this weekend, paving the way for the Reds to seal the Premier League title at home to Crystal Palace. After reviewing the opening night of the Premier League’s return, Josh Williams and David Alexander Hughes take a deep dive into Everton, explaining why Carlo Ancelotti’s side could find it harder than they usually in the Goodison derby. Our hosts pick out the players and areas Liverpool could exploit and also spell out why the coolness personified partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez could be in for a tough first game back. And the podcast rounds off by looking at the clash with Roy Hodgson’s Palace and the player who could pose a big treat to the Reds being crowned champions on the night. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. The Agenda: Liverpool title destiny clearer as Man City beat Arsenal
The Agenda is here to react to the return of the Premier League with Manchester City beating Arsenal 3-0 and so preventing Liverpool from winning the title at Goodison Park this weekend. Had City lost tonight, the Reds would have been crowned champions with victory over rivals Everton in the 236th Merseyside derby on Sunday. But with David Luiz playing an unwitting role, that did not transpire at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola's side saw off 10-man Arsenal with goals from Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden. That was the second Premier League match of the evening. VAR controversy marred the first match back as Sheffield United were denied a goal against Aston Villa as they played out a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. Guy Clarke and Matt Addison discuss that, all of the above, and the latest on Mohamed Salah's fitness ahead of the Merseyside derby. Jurgen Klopp’s old team-mate on what the Reds boss was like as a player, his development as a coach, and what happened with Timo Werner deal
We’ve got a very special podcast to round off the week’s listening on the Blood Red channel as Matt Addison picks up the phone to Jurgen Klopp’s former team-mate, and now German football journalist, Guido Schäfer. The pair played together for six years at FSV Mainz 05 in the early 90s and Guido provides a lovely and fascinating insight into what the man affectionately known in his homeland as ‘Kloppo’ was like as a player and as a person back then. Proud Guido then talks about Klopp’s development as a manager, from Mainz, to Borussia Dortmund and now to Liverpool, who he has led to European, World and, soon enough, Premier League glory. Guido now covers RB Leipzig for the Leipziger Volkszeitung in Germany and is perfectly placed to give us the inside track on the details behind Timo Werner’s deal to join Chelsea, when for so long it looked as if the striker was set to sign for the Reds. And Guido also gives us the lowdown on Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, who is being tipped to succeed Klopp when the great man eventually leaves Anfield. The Agenda: Why Liverpool haven’t agreed a new contract with Gini Wijnaldum yet
Why hasn’t Gini Wijnaldum signed a new contract with Liverpool yet? Sean Bradbury asks the Liverpool ECHO’s LFC correspondent Paul Gorst just that. The duo also touch on Wijnaldum’s position at Liverpool, compared to the one he operates in for Holland, as well as talking about his club and international colleague Virgil van Dijk. The Reds do not look set to make any major signings in the short term after pulling out of the race for Timo Werner. But could that lead to new deals for Wijnaldum – as well as van Dijk? The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. David Maddock special: Why Liverpool are not signing Werner | Chelsea’s gamble | Interest in Aouar | Atletico Madrid, three months on
Paul Wheelock speaks to David Maddock, the Daily Mirror’s Northern Football Correspondent, for a special podcast. David has covered Liverpool for nearly 30 years and so he is well placed to offer his insight and opinion on the club’s huge progress under Jurgen Klopp. That progress will see the Reds crowned Premier League champions in the coming weeks and, according to our guest, there is plenty more to come from the squad Klopp has built. However, it appears unlikely that the squad will be bolstered by further signings this summer. David explains why that’s no bad thing, why the club did not follow up their interest in Timo Werner, and why Chelsea, who look set to sign the German striker, could be taking a risk. Talk then turns to a player Liverpool are still interested in, Houssem Aouar, and what it would take for the Lyon midfielder to arrive at Anfield sooner rather than later. Also on the agenda are Klopp’s plans for Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, as well as Gini Wijnaldum’s contract situation, before a wide-ranging podcast rounds off with David’s thoughts, three months down the line, on the government’s decision to let Liverpool’s Champions League match with Atletico Madrid go ahead. Analysing Anfield: What Liverpool are asking of Jurgen Klopp now Timo Werner deal is off
With Timo Werner set to sign for Chelsea, what does that mean for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, the manager and club the RB Leipzig striker seemed perfect for? That’s the question asked by Josh Williams and David Alexander Hughes in the latest Analysing Anfield podcast. Our hosts are huge fans of Werner and wonder if there are other players like the Germany international on the market at a cheaper price – or whether Liverpool will spend at all this summer. If not, Josh and David explain why Klopp will have to find new and creative ways to keep the Reds at the top both domestically and in Europe. Chelsea, who are also interested in Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell, are set to be closer challengers to Liverpool next season. But Josh and Dave believe Frank Lampard’s side will still be a way off the Reds – and for one big, expensive reason. Also on the agenda is the subject of net spend, FSG, and Klopp’s fearsome front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, who even without Werner as competition, should still be as good as any strikeforce in the world for a little longer yet.The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Jan Age Fjortoft special: Liverpool, Odegaard and inside story of his move to Real Madrid | THAT Klopp interview | Werner, Havertz, Sancho
Matt Addison picks up the phone to Jan Age Fjortoft for a special Blood Red podcast. The ex-Swindon Town, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United striker speaks to Jurgen Klopp throughout the season as part of his job as a TV pundit. And he explains what it’s like to question the Liverpool manager after matches – as well as giving the inside story of THAT ‘let’s talk about six, baby’ interview following last season’s Champions League final win in Madrid. Talk then turns to Real Madrid wonderkid, and fellow Norwegian, Martin Odegaard, who came close to joining Liverpool, the club he still supports, before moving to the Spanish capital. Fjortoft details how he helped Odegaard make his decision and answers whether he sees the 21-year-old midfielder pulling on the Red shirt one day. Fjortoft also discusses another Norwegian prodigy, 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland, who is also being tipped to move to Anfield in the future. Fjortoft covers the Bundesliga as part of the job he does today and so Matt gets his opinion on three players who have been extensively linked to Liverpool – Timo Werner, Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz. View from the Kop: Klopp’s stroke of genius, what he should do after the title is won, and why there is no way back for Coutinho
The View from the Kop Liverpool FC fans’ podcast returns as host Paul Wheelock is joined by big Reds Paul Philbin and Kai Delaney. One year on from the Champions League final win in Madrid and trophy parade back in Liverpool, the pod kicks off with the panel’s memories of that magical weekend – as Kai tells a story that not many Reds supporters will top! We then fast-forward to the current day and what Philbo believes is another stroke of genius from Jurgen Klopp, and what the Liverpool boss should do when his side inevitably win the title – perhaps even the first game back against Everton at Goodison Park! Or perhaps not, even, as there is no guarantee that the match will be staged at the home of the Blues, which follows reports suggesting that Liverpool could be prevented from playing their final home games at Anfield. Philbo and Kai give their opinion on that before delivering their verdict on what they feel have been the best matches so far this season.
