Behind Enemy Lines: Ajax's Brazilian duo Liverpool must be wary of | Dutch reaction to Virgil van Dijk injury blow
Liverpool face Ajax in the Champions League this evening, but what should we expect from Erik Ten Hag and his players? Blood Red's Matt Addison speaks to Football Oranje's Michael Statham to get the lowdown on the Dutch side, including their strengths and weaknesses, how they will approach the game, and how they have changed since reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. Frenkie de Jong, Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek may no longer be in Amsterdam, but there are plenty of other threats, including David Neres, who has been linked with a big-money transfer move to Liverpool in the past, and a new Brazilian wonderkid who is tipped to cause the Reds' defence problems. Michael also provides the Dutch view on Virgil van Dijk's ACL injury and explains how Liverpool have already missed out on signing his ideal replacement. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Press conference: Jurgen Klopp and Gini Wijnaldum react to Virgil van Dijk injury ahead of Ajax in Champions League opener
Jurgen Klopp addressed Virgil van Dijk’s knee injury and whether Liverpool will look to the transfer market for a replacement at his press conference in Amsterdam this evening. The Reds take on Ajax in their Group B Champions League opener on Wednesday night, but much of the focus was away from the game, as Klopp was also asked about Everton’s challenges in the Merseyside derby, with Thiago Alcantara also being injured at Goodison Park. During an explosive press conference, the German also confirmed Fabinho is likely to play in defence, given Joel Matip, along with Thiago and Van Dijk, is sidelined. Gini Wijnaldum was also in front of the media and he too was asked about van Dijk, giving an impassioned response regarding Everton's physical approach at Goodison Park. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Analysing Anfield: Thiago Merseyside derby masterclass | Ajax and Sheffield United previewed
Josh Williams and David Hughes are back with a second Analysing Anfield podcast in as many days as they review Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Everton and preview the Champions League opener at Ajax and Saturday’s visit of Sheffield United to Anfield. Monday’s special edition focused on how Liverpool are going to cope without Virgil van Dijk after the world’s best centre-back suffered a serious knee injury in the Merseyside derby. One of the cases put forward here regards new midfielder Thiago Alcantara, whose magnificent display against Everton is analysed in depth, as are the performances of stand-in goalkeeper Adrian and Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, who will now have to shoulder the burden in van Dijk’s absence. However, Josh explains why it may make more sense to put Fabinho back there. Talk then turns to Wednesday’s trip to Ajax, and why it could be another thrilling match in a season packed full of them, and this weekend’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United, which will see the swift return of Rhian Brewster to Liverpool. But with van Dijk sidelined, out hosts believe it’s another Blades forward that could pose a bigger problem. Analysing Anfield: How to replace Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's 'ultimate safety net' | Fabinho, Matip, Upamecano
How do Liverpool replace Virgil van Dijk? With the news that the Netherlands captain is set to undergo surgery on an ACL injury which could keep him out for the rest of the season, Josh Williams and David Hughes host a special episode of Analysing Anfield to assess the options Jurgen Klopp has in front of him. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip appear the obvious candidates, but could Fabinho or even RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano be the man to replace Van Dijk in Liverpool's defence? The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Blood Red: No Pickford ban for lunge on Van Dijk | Alisson injury boost | Matip scan | Everton reviewed and Ajax previewed
The Blood Red podcast reacts to the news that Jordan Pickford will not be banned for his horror tackle on Virgil van Dijk; that Alisson Becker could be back by the end of the month, and that Joel Matip has today undergone a scan. If Matip’s leg injury proves serious that means Liverpool could be down to one fit recognised centre-back for Wednesday’s Champions League opener with Ajax after Van Dijk sustained a serious injury at the hands of Pickford in Saturday’s 2-2 Merseyside derby draw with Everton at Goodison Park. But some much-needed good news for Jurgen Klopp comes in the fact that goalkeeper Alisson is making good progress in his return from injury and could even be fit to face West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday, October 31. Ian Doyle, Joe Rimmer, Connor Dunn and host Matt Addison discuss all that as well as reviewing the controversial clash with Everton and previewing the trip to Amsterdam to take on Ajax. Breaking News: Virgil van Dijk set for surgery on damaged ACL knee injury as a result of reckless Jordan Pickford lunge
Virgil van Dijk's season could be in doubt with the Dutchman set for surgery after damaging his ACL in the Merseyside derby against Everton. Jordan Pickford's lunge at van Dijk resulted in him being substituted after just nine minutes at Goodison Park and, following consultation with a specialist, the defender is now set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. Thomas Gronnemark Special: Working with Liverpool and Klopp | Why 'boring' Wenger plan is wrong | Lowdown on Ajax and Midtjylland
Liverpool throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark has worked with the Premier League champions for two seasons - but he has also been employed by both Ajax and FC Midtjylland in the past. So who better to get the lowdown on two of Liverpool's Group D Champions League opponents than the Dane ahead of the trip to the Netherlands to take on Ajax in their opening match on Wednesday night? Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff and players will certainly be taking note. Thomas also explains why he feels FIFA and Arsene Wenger's proposed law changes would be bad not only for Liverpool, but also for football more widely, and why he has gone back on the suggestion that he would not work for one of the Reds' top-six Premier League rivals. Analysing Anfield: Everton vs Liverpool Preview | Thiago, Jurgen Klopp’s new Merseyside derby weapon
It’s a special joint edition of the Liverpool ECHO’s Analysing Anfield and Analysing Everton podcasts as we preview Saturday’s Everton v Liverpool Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. In the red corner we have Josh Williams, and in the blue corner we have David Hughes, but despite their allegiances, they remain as objective as ever as they pick apart what could be the most intriguing derby in years. Everton will go into the 12.30pm kick-off riding high at the top of the Premier League while Liverpool will make the short trip across Stanley Park with tails between their legs after the heavy defeat at Aston Villa before the international break. Surely, then, Carlo Ancelotti will instruct his side to take the game to the defending champions? Josh and David discuss that, and use the underlying statistics to explain why this is a true battle of the best two teams in the country on form at the moment, before turning their thoughts to which areas both the Blues and the Reds will look to exploit tomorrow. There’s a special look at the respective under-fire goalkeepers, Jordan Pickford and Adrian, and why their performances could be the deciding factors in the game, and there’s also analysis of James Rodriguez’s influence and why Jurgen Klopp should throw Thiago Alcantara straight in at the deep end.The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Blood Red: Thiago and Hendo derby boost | Pay-per-view and Project Big Picture | And who’s heading out of the club this week?
It’s a whistle-stop Blood Red podcast as Paul Gorst and Dan Kay join host Connor Dunn to pack in a whole host of big Liverpool talking points – starting with positive news about new boy Thiago Alcantara and captain Jordan Henderson plus early thoughts on Saturday’s Merseyside derby. We’ll have more on that on Friday’s show – and more on FSG’s 10-year anniversary as the club’s owners later this week, too. That’s still touched on, here. However, more time is dedicated to the decision from the Premier League to charge supporters £14.95 for pay-per-view matches and Liverpool’s part in the Project Big Picture plans that emerged over the weekend. Also, the panel wonder whether Harry Wilson and a number of youngsters could be departing before the domestic transfer window closes on Friday. The Agenda: Should Takumi Minamino or Diogo Jota get a chance ahead of Roberto Firmino?
Roberto Firmino is perhaps the defining player of Jurgen Klopp’s five years in charge of Liverpool. But, following the 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa, the Reds’ brilliant number nine was not spared criticism. Was that fair? Maybe, maybe not. But what is clear is that Firmino – and the other members of the club’s feared front three – has real competition for his place given the impressive strides made by Takumi Minamino since the start of the new season and by the big-money arrival of Diogo Jota. The good news is that Firmino will go into the Merseyside derby next weekend on the back of a couple of morale-boosting goals for Brazil. But, having netted just once in the Premier League since January (albeit three of those months were lost to lockdown), some have suggested his place is not as secure as it once was. So Matt Addison and Theo Squires tackle the subject in the latest episode of The Agenda. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Analysing Anfield: Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk, the master problem solvers, and why Ruben Dias signing won't address Man City's issues
Liverpool underlined why they are the Premier League champions with a superb 3-1 victory over Arsenal on Monday that came on the back of closest rivals Manchester City losing 5-2 at home to Leicester City. Man City followed that humiliating defender by signing yet another defender in the shape of the £65m Ruben Dias. But as Josh Williams and David Hughes explain on the latest Analysing Anfield podcast, Dias may not be the man to address their huge defensive concerns. Virgil van Dijk has certainly been a transformational signing for Liverpool, however, but Josh and David argue on Monday he showed why he is a problem solver in more ways than one as part of their deep dive into the win against Arsenal. Talk then turn to this weekend’s visit to Aston Villa, and their signing of former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, and early thoughts on the title race and the buys that are being made, including City’s capture of Benfica’s Dias.
