Ahead of tonight’s huge match, Matt Addison speaks to Football.London's Tottenham Hotspur reporter Alasdair Gold to get the lowdown on the visitors to Anfield and the team Jose Mourinho has taken to the top of the table. In Harry Kane, Spurs have a player looking more like Roberto Firmino every week that goes by, while Heung-min Son is benefiting greatly from his captain’s transition to a creator as well as a goalscorer. Along with Gareth Bale, Tottenham fans hope they have a trio to rival Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino, and while they aren’t quite there yet, the quality of the individuals is clear. It’s also the case in the other areas of the pitch, where Sergio Reguilon, who Liverpool looked at before signing Kostas Tsimikas in the summer, has started life in north London in fine form. Tanguy N’Dombele, meanwhile, has turned a corner, making the midfield battle something to look forward to at Anfield for a Liverpool team still with a plethora of injury problems limiting their selection options (despite what Mourinho says). Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, who won an historic treble with the Reds in 2001, has died at the age of 73. The Blood Red podcast reflects on the man who, as well as winning six trophies in his own right at Anfield, provided the platform for later success, bringing through Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher and modernising Liverpool FC in almost every aspect. Houllier also managed the likes of PSG and Lyon, as well as the French national team, and later worked for the Red Bull group, who owns RB Leipzig, who Liverpool drew in the Champions League this morning. Joint top of the Premier League and qualification to the Champions League last 16 signed, sealed and delivered – and all against the backdrop of a genuine injury crisis that sees nine first-team players currently sidelined. Little wonder, then, that the latest Poetry in Motion podcast, hosted as ever by Neil Fitzmaurice and featuring regular guests Dan Kay and Joe Rimmer, kicks off with a tribute to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side. A great night for Liverpool’s first team – and a great night for Liverpool’s Academy.
