Ep 196How Military Spouse Laura Pennington-Briggs Began a Successful Freelance Writing Business - BtR 196
Laura Pennington-Briggs was a military spouse who found her success by becoming a digital nomad running a successful freelance writing business. The landscape of the economy has changed. Businesses need to remain competitive in their markets, but may not be in a position to hire full-time staff. There may be special projects that require special skillsets for a short period of time. That is where freelancers come into play. Her reason for doing freelance writing was to have meaningful work that fit her lifestyle of moving around the world with her husband who was serving in the U.S. military at the time. As her success grew, she found herself giving TEDx Talks on the subject and helping others launch their own freelance writing business. She has now helped over 5,000 writers do just that. Ep 193Master Passive Income from Real Estate with Dustin Heiner - BtR 193
Dustin was feeling life slip through his fingers if something didn’t change. Financial independence was the way to go so that he could live WITH his family during the years he has on this earth. He dabbled with a variety of entrepreneurial ventures, but only one would support the lifestyle he desired. That was passive income from real estate. He immediately looked at the resources he had available, conducted research on where he should make that first investment. California, where he lived at the time, was too expensive and he would not generate any income from anything he purchased. That first piece of passive income rental property was in Ohio! Ohio?! Yes, Ohio. Over the span of six years, Dustin Heiner was able to own enough passive assets to leave his job. Dustin and his wife homeschool their children and travel wherever they like. They are teaching their children about financial independence, a topic that is not taught in schools. The amount of time Dustin spends each month is less than Tim Ferriss’ The Four-Hour Work Week. Property managers and other service professionals handle the work. He keeps what is left after he has paid his team for their services. His hope is to help others realize they, too, can live the life they always dreamed of living beyond the rut. Passive income from real estate could be the vehicle to finance your dream. BONUS - Join Us at Thunderdash 2019 - A 5K Mud Run in Texas
Brandon and Jerry invite you to join them in Comfort, Texas for a 5K mud run in Texas called Thunderdash. The race will be on September 28, 2019. What is a 5K Mud Run? A 5K mud run is a five-kilometer race or event that has obstacles throughout the course. A good one will have a lot of mud obstacles to get you bogged down and feeling like you just ran through a combat zone, but without all the dying. Why? Because just running three miles for 30 to 45 minutes can be boring. In an obstacle course like these, you break that running up with a different kind of physical challenge. We’ve found these to be popular among cross-fit athletes. What to Expect at Thunderdash The Thunderdash Course The main course is the 5K Obstacle Course Race. Located on a beautiful piece of land outside of Comfort this mud run in texas boasts natural mud pits, 30-foot deep rock quarries to climb in and out of and much, much more. The obstacles are man-made, nature-made, and a combination of both. Many of the obstacles will encourage team efforts for easier completion. If you’re wondering what a 5K translates to in miles, it is a little over 3.1 miles. You can do it! Ep 190Authentic Manhood, Sexual Brokenness and Other Struggles of a Christian Man - Traylor Lovvorn - BtR 190
Traylor Lovvorn and Jerry discuss the struggles of a Christian man including sexual brokenness and how it all connects with authentic manhood. Authentic Manhood - Struggles of a Christian Man Pornography and lust are part of the struggles of a Christian man. Society tells us that manly men must have sexual conquests. What we really desire is connection and permission to have an identity of authentic manhood. Christian men are not immune to divorce. We are not even immune to sexual addiction. Jerry has shared that he was exposed to pornography at the age of seven years old. While he tried to justify his porn stash to his wife, it was sending a clear message to her that she was not enough for him. This tension was bringing him to the trust that he was experiencing sexual brokenness. Fortunately, Jerry was able to find a lot of what Traylor talks about in this episode, community among Christian men, strength to be weak in front of his spouse and godly men, and exposing the secret he had been trying to keep all those years. Traylor Lovvorn - Undone Redone Their divorce didn’t work out. That is what Traylor Lovvorn tells people today when they ask about his marriage. Traylor was undone by his addiction to pornography. His 11-year marriage ended in sexual brokenness. The appearance of being a “perfect Christian man” fell apart all around him, and he was left only with what would bring him to authentic manhood. Six years into their divorce, reconciliation brought Tray and Mel back together and they remarried. Their platform Undone Redone now helps men search for what it means to be a godly man and how to deal with the trauma of betrayal. At the time of this episode, they have been remarried for eleven years, so 11-6-11 and counting! They have dedicated their second marriage to ministering those who face the struggles of a Christian man, and help marriages thrive through their weaknesses. Episode Timestamps 3:50 What is Undone Redone? 5:18 Why do men wait until a crisis hits instead of maintenance? 6:30 Dealing with shame - pornography addiction, sexual brokenness 10:20 Cheer up, you’re much worse off than you think! - Authentic manhood 14:05 Facing the facade and having permission to feel the full range of emotions 17:10 Practical tips for Christian men - community 20:23 Best way to connect with Tray from Undone Redone 24:28 Closing remarks Read the complete show notes here, https://beyondtherut.com/190 Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Jimbo Clark on When In the Box Thinking Makes Sense – BtR 188
In the box thinking may have its purpose after all according to training and consultant Jimbo Clark. What is the Box?"Sometimes we need to be in the rut."We often hear entrepreneur innovation advice in idioms like “seize the day,” “make it happen,” and “thinking outside the box.” Well, what is this box everyone talks about? In short, the box is all things of normal convention. It is the stuff that comes with the phrase, “That is the way we always do it.” Thinking outside of the box means thinking beyond those conventions to overcome a problem, beat the competition, or create something new. There is a time and place for that level of creativity, and there isn’t. What if in the box thinking had a time and place as well? To decide this, we need to first know what defines our own box, and when it serves its purpose to our dreams, vision, and goals. In the Box ThinkingThinking outside the box is great when it comes to competing. You want to disrupt the space you’re in and gain an advantage. History books note all the ways convention was broken in order to create a win. What is often ignored are all the components of thinking inside the box that were present as well. One example of in the box thinking Jerry recalls is Operation Desert Storm in August 1990. Troops were built up along the border between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Conventional wisdom believed that the plan was to drive into occupied Kuwait to push the Iraqi army out of that country. On the eve of the ground assault, General Schwarzkopf has the entire coalition except for a small force serving as a distraction moved west and pushed into Iraq instead of Kuwait and headed off the elite Republican Guard in the open desert of Iraq who were caught off guard and annihilated. That was outside the box thinking. It was supported by a lot of in the box thinking on a micro-level. People who have served in the U.S. military know that there are certain behaviors and functions that are carried out no matter what. Some of those include general orders of guard duty, preventive maintenance and checks (PMCS,) weapons maintenance, must-do tasks the moment you pull into a camp or stopping point, and so on.Responsibilities in a Successful Marriage - Bonus ContentMany of us desire to have a family. Divorce is not in the original plan when we get married and have children. Jimbo Clark also discusses the levels of priority that have brought him and Anita happiness in their marriage as well as establish a vision in their children on what is possible for themselves. The HierarchyThis is the box that Jimbo and Anita shaped their marriage priorities listed in order of importance. Selfish is not always bad. Selfish is important as the announcement from an airline safety briefing on how you should put the oxygen mask on yourself first before putting one on your children. 3 Crucial Must Haves Before Leaving a Job and Living in Asia – Jimbo Clark BtR 187
Brandon and Jerry chat with Jimbo Clark about living in Asia and three crucial must-haves before leaving a job to run a lifestyle business. Leaving a Job“My soul wants to do something bigger!” - You (It was really Brandon who said it, but imagine it was you.)Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I need to quit my job, but I need the money?” Leaving a job, especially one you hate may be daunting, scary. It calls for leaping into what feels like the unknown. Sixty-eight percent of employees are disengaged from their employment with fifty-one percent doing just enough to not get fired. The other seventeen percent are truly disengaged. You know who they are. That’s your cubicle neighbor who is shopping online during a team meeting. It’s the person who comes in late, takes an extended lunch every day, and leaves early. You can get away with this behavior, but it is often the lowest producing team member. The crazy thing is they feel like they’re putting in the most effort! It’s hard to tell though with all the complaining, “I want to quit my job so badly!”Jimbo Clark shows us that leaving a job in order to pursue your dream or calling can be done. What is even more amazing is his insight that turned a soul-sucking job into a season of purpose. After just a few years of invested time, he was able to leave the J-O-B for a lifestyle business he could be proud of owning and operating.Living in Asia“The rut is there because it is known.” - Jimbo ClarkLeaving a job for a better paying job is one thing, but leaving a job to open a lifestyle business to supporting living in Asia is amazing!Jimbo has lived and worked in Asia for over two decades. He built a family and home in Taipei, Taiwan. His company, Innogreat, helps companies think both inside and outside the box.The end result for Jimbo is what one of his uncles referred to as a “working retirement.” In this case, a working retirement is not about having to work in your retirement years. It is instead about living a retirement lifestyle today. For Jimbo, that meant living in Asia at a lower cost-of-living than in the United States. It meant ultimately leaving a job he did not like. It meant being in near-perpetual vacation mode. Jimbo Clark living in Asia with his family. #LivingTheDream #MakeYourOwnPathThose 3 Crucial Must-Haves Before Leaving a JobDon’t hate us. We aren’t listing those three crucial must-haves before leaving a job in this written post. Podcast Movement 2019 – 2 Great Reasons to Attend a Professional Conference BtR 186
Brandon and Jerry discuss plans for attending Podcast Movement 2019 and two great reasons why you should attend a professional conference.Podcast Movement 2019Podcast Movement is a conference founded by Jared Easley and Dan Franks in 2014 to bring together thousands of podcasters and share about their craft. The event is designed for those who have been involved in podcasting since the first iPod as well as those who are just getting started. Some attend to learn more about the technical aspects of creating a podcast. Others come for marketing tips and tricks, and others are on the lookout for ideas to improve the formats of their shows.Networking and collaboration are other reasons why people come every year.Reasons to Attend a Professional ConferenceWhile you may not be planning to attend Podcast Movement yourself...ever, you may be asking yourself, “Why go to a conference at all?”There are two great reasons why you need to attend a professional conference even if your employer does not pay for it.First, you are investing in your own future. Your career or business will gain new ideas, skills, and knowledge from attending a professional conference. This week’s episode of Beyond the Rut discusses the desired focus Jerry has going into this year’s podcasting conference. The second reason is that you can network with other like-minded professionals. Success does not happen in a vacuum, and you should not try to go it alone.By attending a professional conference, you may come across an accountability partner like Jerry did while attending the 2018 Association for Talent Development Conference. Many people who attend Podcast Movement find themselves working on collaboration projects where efforts synergize and results are multiplied. We hope to inspire you with justification for attending a conference. Here are some suggestions to help you articulate the benefits of going to an event of your choice. You can gain skills to improve current programs, products, or services. There may be content offered that will help with a strategic initiative. You may learn what the state of the industry is and what the competition is doing. Vendors are often present to showcase how their tools are disrupting your field.5 Tips on How to Network at a Conference - BONUS CONTENTSince one of the benefits of attending a professional conference is the opportunity to network, here are five tips to help you do it in a way that prevents you from being a schmuck about it. Dress professionally. While others are dressing down and relaxing, you still want to represent your brand. Introduce yourself with laser speak. Jerry’s Sci-Fi Keto Diet, the Importance of Rest, and Goal Management BtR 185
Brandon and Jerry discuss the keto diet Jerry’s been on as well as the importance of rest and measuring your goals. The Importance of Getting RestRest plays a major role in our performance whether at home or at work. The Bible talks about working for six days then resting on the seventh. It even talks about vacations and sabbaticals, sorta. Don’t believe us? It’s in Leviticus 25, the Sabbath Year. Before you run off to tell your boss and your family you’re taking an entire year off from work, take a listen to this episode. Think about the ways you can build rest into your week. Where can you slow down, even minimize your activities to spend more time doing what matters most and with who matters most?Tweet This! Pin It! "Jerry's Sci-Fi Keto Diet, the Importance of Rest, and Goal Management."The Keto DietJerry started the ketogenic diet in March of 2019. This came after watching the documentary “The Magic Pill” on Netflix. All the education he had about carbohydrates, especially sugar, made sense.Since starting the keto diet, Jerry has experienced a drop in 30 pounds. He’s had to buy new, smaller pants just a couple months into the diet! Most noticeable has been his boost in energy.Listen to this episode as Jerry describes what the keto diet looks like for him.Measure It to Make It - Success with Goals One of the keys for success with the keto diet for Jerry has been measuring his progress with the foods he eats. It also helps him know when he is off-target and needs to make different choices with the next meal. You can also find success in measuring your progress with your goals.Resources and LinksYouTube Channels and VideosWatch Dr. Eric Berg describe the science behind the ketogenic diet. He is a chiropractor by trade and has been teaching nutrition to medical students for years.Dr. Annette Bosworth prescribes the keto diet to her cancer patients and shares education on her channel about the ins and outs of the diet as well as the successes she has seen with her own patients.Thomas DeLauer will geek out as he shares with you the science behind the ketogenic diet. Jerry’s Note: I mainly watch Thomas and pretend I can fit into tight shirts, but that isn’t true. Not yet, anyway.Dr. Ken Berry has been prescribing the ketogenic diet to his patients for years and seen results. I like watching him for the practical tips, and down to earth explanations. There is a documentary on Netflix titled “The Magic Pill,” which is worth watching.Research Articles"Implementing a Low-Carbohydrate, Ketogenic Diet to Manage Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus," Expert Review of Endocrinology & Metabolism. Madison Radke Discusses Why You Should Eat Healthy at Work – BtR 177
This episode takes a look at how our diet impacts our performance at work and why we should eat healthy at work.Madison Radke BioWhile a sophomore in college, Madison had hit a physical rut. She was not in the peak performance that she once was when she played high school basketball. The “College Fifteen” had struck, and it wreaked havoc on her confidence.Through education on nutrition and fitness, she was able to work out of that rut and stay out of it. Madison now helps clients ages 18 through 80-plus years old to do the same. Her passion to help people includes working with registered nurses (RN’s) to eat healthy at work. After all, RNs spend eight to twelve hours on their feet helping sick people get well. The problem is they often eat junk food to fuel their bodies. It seems counter to the worst they do.Credentials for Madison Radke B.S. Exercise Science from Georgia College Certified Trainer - National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Nutrition Coach - Precision NutritionWhy Should You Eat Healthy at Work?We come across many people who find it difficult for eating healthy on the go. Their jobs require a lot of travel, and as a result, they dine out a lot. It may not be a matter of traveling for work. A busy American lifestyle is enough to convince ourselves that we are too busy to cook a healthy meal at home. The drive-through of the nearest fast food restaurant becomes a better, easier option.Maybe you find yourself in a similar rut to Madison’s. Instead of gaining the “College Fifteen,” is it more like you’ve gained forty pounds in your forties? If your energy levels are low at work, your body aches, you get sick a lot, then this is probably the episode for you.We want to share with you through Madison’s story that it is possible to eat healthy at work, at home, and anywhere else you may be. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be inspired to at least create a weekly lunch menu for yourself to take to work and turn that ship around.Links and ResourcesListen to this past episode on how Naturally Slim seems to eat what they want and stay slender and fit. Lisa Reck Discusses the Healing Power of Gratitude – BtR 176
Grief can be a debilitating rut if we allow it. Author and blogger Lisa Reck discusses the healing power of gratitude.Lisa Reck BioLisa Reck is an author, blogger, and coach helping people navigate through their pain to live their best life today. Her book titled Breaking Through the Storm: Transform Pain into Power Through Gratitude and Forgiveness shares the story of the tragic loss of her older brother. She is a wife and mother living on the East Coast of the United States. By day, she is Director of Communications with a large dance photography company. Her passion is to help those who may be stuck in a rut of not living out their own dreams. The Break Through Academy is a six-week course and community to help people gain clarity in life, and create a vision that is driven by gratitude. The Healing Power of GratitudeTragedy ripped apart Lisa’s family and created ripple effects that lasted for decades and spanned generations. Lisa’s story shows us that choosing an attitude of gratitude and forgiving those who have hurt us allows us to heal and move forward in life. We were not meant to wallow in our ruts of grief. That pain is meant only for a season.Choosing gratitude and forgiveness is not easy, and it takes time. You may feel like you are betraying the memory of a loved one by not keeping yourself in a state of pain. The reality is your loved one probably did not want you to hold yourself back, but the opposite. Your loved ones probably wanted you to live your best life now in honor and memory of the time you had with them.Holding onto bitterness is like taking poison and hoping the other person dies. Forgiveness is the antidote. Choosing gratitude every day is choosing to live.Links and ResourcesListen to this past episode on how adopting an Attitude of Gratitude can Change Your World.Read Lisa’s book, Breaking Through the Storm: Transform Pain into Power Through Gratitude and Forgiveness.Visit Lisa’s website and blog at LisaReck.com.Connect with UsSubscribe on iTunes (Apple Podcasts), Spotify, Stitcher, or iHeartRadio and never miss an episode.Twitter @beyondtherutFacebook Beyond the RutEmail [email protected] Attribution“Oceans Apart” is our theme song composed and performed by Scott Ian Holmes.Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude and Change Your World – BtR 175
Brandon and Jerry discuss how to adopt an attitude of gratitude and the power it has to change the world around you.Benefits of Gratitude“Gratitude is one of the most powerful human emotions. Once expressed, it changes attitude, brightens outlook, and broadens our perspective.” ― Germany KentAn attitude of gratitude can mean the difference between you getting the most out of your day, or trudging through another day in the rut.The Shawn Achor book, The Happiness Advantage, describes how having gratitude can bring you happiness and that it is happiness that attracts successful outcomes. Some of the happiness or gratitude examples include the following from his book: Happy physicians make more accurate diagnoses faster than unhappy ones. Optimistic salespeople outsell those who are not by over 50%! Your perception of someone who annoys you can shift to appreciation with an attitude of gratitude.Gray Matters - Your Brain Changes with Gratitude! We came across an article from the University of California Berkeley about how gratitude can change the chemistry in our brains! Positive thinking can release oxytocin which is a key element in health for us. Having a genuine attitude of gratitude and a lack of negative thoughts and emotions will increase the stimulation of the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain related to learning and decision making. If you want to make better choices in life, start with how you see yourself, and the people around you. Be grateful for what is around your world right now. Note the difference!Tips on How to Adopt an Attitude of GratitudeHopefully, you’ve listened to our episode and decided to adopt an attitude of gratitude now. If you haven’t listened to our episode yet, download it now and take a listen. How to Practice GratitudeThis week’s episode talks about ways we can increase our sense of gratitude for the world around us. It is like a muscle. We have to get regular workouts for it to become a major part of our character. If you are interested in practicing gratitude exercises but are not sure where to start, here are a few suggestions to get you started. Write out a gratitude list each night before bed. This tricks your brain to focus on positive thoughts throughout the night while you dream. Think about what that would do for your next day! Pay it forward! Someone has probably done something nice for you at a time you greatly needed it. Do that for someone else, but don’t do it out of a sense of obligation. There had to be a better way, so he invested time to learn a better way.By learning to invest your time rather than just spending it, you may see the results Matt experienced. He was finishing the same amount of work as his coworkers on any given day. The amazing thing was he was finished by 1 pm, four or more hours sooner than his coworkers.Investing in yourself is the best investment when it comes to time. Best Explanation of Love in a Fast-Food Relationship World – BtR 172
Brandon and Jerry continue the discussion with author and pastor, Mike Bullock, on the best explanation of love in a world that has cheapened the word. What is Love - Baby Don’t Hurt Me?You may have heard the 1993 hit song “What is Love?” by Haddaway. The lyrics open like this. What is love?Baby don’t hurt meDon’t hurt meNo moreThe majority of the song repeats combinations of that phrase. It is a dance tune after all. Mike shares how our world seems to have cheapened the word “love.” We use it to describe a food we like, “I love pizza!” We use it to describe our excitement over things like a new car, new computer, jewelry, etc.Focusing on the use of the word love probably has led to the best explanation of love we’ve ever heard. If love can be attached to meaningless, discardable things in our lives, what does that plant in our hearts and minds about discarding our closest relationships? Shouldn’t the definition of love in marriage be a much deeper one? The vows used in marriage often include phrases like the following: In sickness and in health For better or worse Richer or poorerLove accepts both the good and the bad in a life lived out together as one.The Best Explanation of Love starts with understanding the power behind the word. What is the Best Explanation of Love - A Concept of Love EssayReading what is love explained through The Missing Ingredient: Home-Cooked Relationships in a Fast-Food World provides one of the best explanations of love. Are you stuck in a rut with your own marriage? Unless there is abuse happening, it may not be time to throw in the towel. How Do You Define Love? The what is love answer is not so much about what you are getting out of the relationship, but what you are pouring into it. The grass is always greener where you water it. When you sacrificially and lovingly pour into your spouse, watch how she responds. It may surprise you.The grass is always greener where you water it.Change won’t happen overnight. There will be resistance even. Your marriage didn’t get into a rut in one night. It took time and effort to neglect each other, to put up barriers that weren’t there in the beginning. That’s probably the best explanation of love we can give here without giving away the gold that is in this week’s podcast episode. What the Covington Catholic High School Fiasco Taught Us About Emotional Triggers – BtR 163
Brandon and Jerry discuss the impact that our unchecked emotional triggers in the world, in our relationships and in the workplace. Emotional Triggers Can Ignite a Furious Mob MentalityJerry’s heart sank on January 19 when his wife shared with him a news story about a group of high school students who taunted a Native American at the Lincoln Memorial. The students were reported wearing that famous red “Make America Great Again” hat.The short clip showed white teens surrounding a smaller group of Native Americans, and everything about that clip was infuriating. An image circulated across social media like wildfire showing a MAGA-hat-wearing young man smirking in the face of chanting and drumming Nathan Phillips. It didn’t take long for the Twitter-verse to become angry, speak its mind, and call for the worst to happen to these students and their families. Outrage became calls to put pressure on the diocese in Kentucky and the superintendent of the school. People were calling for immediate action, and we mean at that moment, no due process. Celebrities like Kathy Griffin and GQ writer Nathaniel Friedman called for doxing of all the students involved. One of many people who called for the identities to be made public (doxing) of Covington Catholic High School students in the viral video. Those who were outraged demanded the jobs of the superintendent, the parents of the students and others began to cross the line. A store owner called for fans of his store to “fire on” any of these students if they were true fans. He even called for the school to be burned down. Former CNN host even commented how Nick Sandmann had a “punchable face.”Former CNN host, Reza Aslan, described how a teenager had a "punchable face."Grown adults calling for harm to come to teenagers?! Where have we come as a society? What were all the emotional triggers examples here? What were they all triggered by? Some say it was the red “MAGA” hat. It’s like the new white hood to many. Others saw it as a racial issue with racial lenses on. Others saw it as liberals versus conservatives.Whatever the triggers were one thing was certain. Things certainly escalated quickly, and we remain in a rut of staying in our own echo chambers.Be Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak, Slow to AngerGreat reminder regarding how to handle emotional triggers. As the Twitter-frenzy continued, more video clips, longer video clips began to surface. The original reports turned out to be false. People still looked for reasons to be angry at the teenagers and attacked the fact they were in Washington, D.C. for the March for Life event. The conversation was all about making these students look like obnoxious racists. Then, a video surfaced that was almost two hours in length posted by the Black Hebrew Israelites. That is when it became abundantly clear that the best approach was to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. (See USA Today story and full video here. How Creating Disney Magic Changed the Life of Jody Maberry – BtR 170
Brandon and Jerry talk with podcast producer Jody Maberry as he reflects on how working with Lee Cockerell to produce the podcast Creating Disney Magic changed his life. Meeting Lee CockerellReaching out to Lee Cockerell may have been the biggest leap of faith Jody Maberry had taken early in his podcaster career. At the time, Jody was finding traction and success with the Park Leaders Show influencing park rangers to improve how they led in our nation’s parks. He served as a co-host on the Starve the Doubts podcast for a few episodes, and left shortly after a Nutella incident. That’s when he decided to go for it.The Disney way of doing business and customer service fascinated Jody. Lee Cockerell had just gone into retirement after many years serving as a Walt Disney World executive. Lee is the man who opened Disneyland Paris and implemented many changes we see today in how Walt Disney Resorts are operated. In our episode this week, you’ll hear about how Jody reached out to Lee, and the surprising discussion that ultimately led to the start of the popular podcast called Creating Disney Magic which focuses on success in your personal career and delivering top notch customer service. How Creating Disney Magic Opened DoorsAs Creating Disney Magic gained momentum, both Lee Cockerell and Jody Maberry experienced doors opening for them they could not imagine. The world craved learning about Walt Disney leadership philosophies and practices.Lee and Jody have expanded the reach of Creating Disney Magic to include speaking engagements that now include Jody on the stage!Books have been published under the banner of the show such as Time Management Magic, which helps readers apply the skills used by Lee Cockerell to make the most out of a day. Jody Maberry is the narrator for the audio version of Time Management Magic.A spinoff show recently launched with Jody Maberry working alongside Lee’s son, Dan Cockerell. Dan is another former Walt Disney leader sharing his insights on the Disney way of leadership. That show is called Come Rain or Shine with Dan Cockerell. The title is derived from how Dan’s executive assistant was empowered to kick him out of his office rain or shine every day so he could connect with Disney Cast Members. The latest show from Jody Maberry is a joint venture with another former Disney leader, Jeff Noel who enjoyed a 30-year career with Walt Disney Company. Jody Maberry Reflects on Being a Small Business Owner in Podcasting – BtR 169
Brandon and Jerry talk with podcast producer and marketing consultant Jody Maberry as he reflects on being a small business owner.Pin this! How to Run a PodcastYou may wonder how to run a podcast. Jody Maberry shares with us insights on how he has eight active podcasts at the time of this recording. The key is having a routine that works. It has to be fluid enough to allow you to live life, and structured enough to so that you’re meeting your deadlines and delivering a quality product to your consumers. Sounds a lot like being a small business owner, right? For Jody Maberry, it’s a passion and a business. On Being a Small Business OwnerWe tend to think that the life of a businessman is all about all work and no play. Many business owners, especially entrepreneurs, will tell you that there are definitely seasons where you need to dig deep and hustle. The past three years have shown Jody the importance of also taking a break. We are not meant to be in “hustle mode” all the time. It is even described in the Bible we are to work for six days and rest on the seventh. Whether we take that literally or not, we can at least agree we have periods for work and periods of rest. If we are to succeed in being a small business owner, we have to include rest as part of our plan.If you’re living the life of a business owner or entrepreneur, or you hope to do so one day, listen to this episode and share it with someone you feel would get inspiration out of it.Jody Maberry (aka Sugar Jay)About Jody MaberryJody Maberry is a marketing consultant, copywriter, and customer experience strategist, known as the Business Ranger. How to Develop Skills and Knowledge for Any Area of Your Life – BtR 165
Brandon and Jerry share insights from ultralight backpacking on how to develop skills and knowledge in any area of your life.“Don’t get caught up in being the expert. Be caught up in being a student.” – Brandon CunninghamHow Did Jerry Build Up Skills for Ultralight BackpackingBackpacking is not an activity to be taken lightly. People are rescued from the wilderness every year because of poor planning, such as running out of water, not having the right clothing for the weather, and miscalculating the time needed to hike a trail. Some people, unfortunately, die in the process.Becoming one of those statistics was not an option if he wanted to have his wife’s blessing over this newfound hobby and passion. Below is the process he underwent to build his skills and how to develop your skills and knowledge for any area of life.First, Do the ResearchJerry broke down the large category off ultralight backpacking into smaller chunks or subjects. Here is the Big Four. Hiking safety and techniques, especially foot-care Food and water Sleep (and shelter) Where to backpack in TexasFrom there, he asked a series of questions that needed answers. How do I prevent blisters when hiking? How do I hike with trekking poles? What shoes do I wear to safely hike ultralight? What is ultralight backpacking? How do I filter/purify water? What foods are best for backpacking? I want to sleep off the ground, therefore a hammock may be the best way to go. How do I hammock camp? (He didn’t search that entire phrase.)What Next? Google that stuff! He did not take his information from one resource, but from many in order to determine what was reliable from what was not. It became apparent over a few weeks who the most reliable resources were, the people everyone else on the Internet seem to reference. The right mindset on how to build skills and knowledge in your life.He joined forums like Hammock Forums, and on Facebook he found some groups like “Backpacking and Hiking in Texas” where he could post questions and read what others had posted. YouTube turned out to be the biggest resource as he seemingly has become hooked on channels like ShugEmery, a man in his 60s who talks about hammock camping. He’s like the Robin Williams of backpacking!Second, Practice What Was LearnedOne of the greatest lessons Jerry learned from his service in the U.S. Army was that being on a mission was not the time to try out a skill for the first time. You train in the field as much as possible. Before that, you practice, practice, practice while still safely in garrison. If it was a cooking skill, he practiced in the kitchen or backyard. If it was a hammock skill, he walked to the nearby park and practice setup techniques. It’s a good chance he made the neighbors nervous at times.Third, He Just Did ItThe first few trips were meant to be with groups, but people kept backing out at the last minute. Jerry eventually drew a line in the sand and decided to go anyway. His first few trips were solo overnight trips. If you want to know how to improve skills and knowlGo to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Declutter Your Mind with These Lessons from Ultralight Backpacking
Brandon and Jerry share lessons learned from ultralight backpacking on how to declutter your mind."Tomorrow isn't guaranteed. You only have today. So, what are you going to do with it?" - JerryWhat will you do with today?Lessons from Ultralight Backpacking to Declutter Your MindWhat is Ultralight BackpackingMany long-trail hikers, like those who hike the Appalachian Trail, enjoy going “ultralight.” To be considered an ultralight backpacker, one’s gear “base weight” (food, water, and cooking fuel are not included) is under ten pounds. The idea behind going ultralight is about carrying the lightest load possible to be able to hike as farther and faster than those who don a traditional pack that weighs two to three times more.It is a hiking philosophy that focuses on carrying only what you need and carrying items that perform a variety of functions. Every ounce of gear matters."We tend to pack our fears."Get Rid of Your Stuff Declutter Your LifeJerry loves to travel light in the first place. You will rarely find him taking more than a backpack for a three to four-day trip, and that includes both his clothing and what he needs for work. This allows him to travel faster. There is no need for checking baggage. No time is spent at the baggage claim. There is less stress because there is less stuff to think about.Coworkers were even more amazed in 2018 when Jerry traveled to his company’s headquarters with plans to camp during that trip and still be presentable at work. As a result of traveling light, he was able to enjoy one night under the stars with a lake view. He woke up watching a lightning storm in the distance. Less was more. Because he took the time to gain confidence in having less with him, he was able to enjoy more with what he had around him. When you get rid of your stuff you declutter your life, you declutter your mind. Research shows that stores that offer less variety make more sales of their products than stores that offer a wide variety of options. That seems odd for a society that prides itself on being unique and enjoying choices. Apparently, too many choices are too much on the mind. Maybe that is why animals travel in herds or packs. Too many choices clutter the minds of predators. How to Declutter Your LifeIt is possible to apply concepts of ultralight backpacking to declutter multiple areas of your life.Declutter Your Life in One WeekTake yourself through this “Declutter Your Life Checklist” through the next week, and see what it does for you. There are just a few questions to ask yourself as you go through this process. Have I actually used this in the last two to three years? No? Get rid of it. Am I holding onto this “just in case?” Yes? Get rid of it unless it is a safety item like a fire extinguisher, emergency kits (hurricane, snow storm, etc.) Does this item really bring value to my life? This one is trickier. A better way to ask it is does it enhance your life or it is a burden to keep it? Toss it if it is a burden.First, declutter a room in 30 minutes.Jerry applied going ultrGo to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself.
Things certainly escalated quickly, and we remain in a rut of staying in our own echo chambers.Be Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak, Slow to AngerAs the Twitter-frenzy continued, more video clips, longer video clips began to surface. Warning: this video is graphic for strong language.)Great reminder regarding how to handle emotional triggers.Impact of Your Emotional Triggers in the WorkplacGo to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Paresh Shah on How to Be a Better Leader through Lifter Leadership – BtR 162
TEDx Speaker Paresh Shah shares why being a “lifter” is the new way for a new era on how to be a better leader. How to Be a Better LeaderTake a moment to reflect the qualities of a bad manager. The manager may have talked down to you, rarely communicated expectations clearly, and blamed you for everything that went wrong. You may even still have nightmares at night. Now, shift gears and think about the qualities of a good manager. What comes to mind? Is it someone who listens to your ideas? Maybe that leader created an environment where it was okay to provide input, serve customers through problem solving, and made the work experience a rewarding one.Who is a born leader anyway? No one! Leaders are made not born, and any one of us can learn how to be a better leader if we give it continuous effort.Leadership is not About a TitleThis episode is not just about how to be a good leader and manager. Leadership is not just about a title or position. That is a huge misconception we have. Yes, there are those with assigned responsibilities for a team or project, and then there are the rest of us.Leadership is influence. Influence comes from relationships and trust. With that requires a shift in mindset on how to become a leader in life. That is where Paresh Shah and his concepts around Lifter Leadership comes into play. Brandon and Jerry talk with Paresh about a new era in business that requires a new way of leadership. Power is shifted from a strict hierarchical structure to one that is flatter, agile, and effective.Paresh’s BioCurrently, Paresh serves Chief Strategist and Value Architect at The Non-Obvious Company working with senior leaders around the world to foster non-obvious solutions to some of the biggest problems society and businesses are facing. He has travelled and worked in over 35 countries, giving him a diverse and truly global perspective.Mr. Shah’s prior startup, a wireless-multimedia company, raised $130 MM in venture capital and currently appraised at approximately $700 MM.Mr. Shah was an early executive at Monitor Company, a strategic consultancy formed by several Harvard Business School professors. During Mr. Shah’s tenure as part of the leadership team, Monitor grew from 100 professionals to a global staff of over 1000.As a complement to his business background, Paresh studied of 2000 hours of yoga, mindfulness, meditation, self-help and wisdom teachings with masters around the globe and is a popular instructor and personal "peak performance" coach in the Los Angeles area with students, celebrities and executives.Paresh is happily married and lives in Los Angeles with his wife, four children, rescue dog (Shadow), a hamster named Charlotte and two birds. How to Improve Effectiveness at Work Through the Outward Mindset – BtR 161
Jim McNeal from The Arbinger Institute shares how to improve effectiveness at work through the outward mindset. It’s a different approach to how we perceive the people around us, and as a result, accomplish more by serving more. The Outward Mindset Helped JerryJerry discusses how he was able to increase his own personal effectiveness at work. After receiving a copy of The Outward Mindset: Seeing Beyond Ourselves while on a swag hunt at a recent conference, he devoured just about every word on the flight home. That is a rare feat for Jerry. He’s a slow reader.By the time the plane landed, he was asking himself the following questions: I’m worried about getting processes right. What if instead, I focus on my coworkers and what they need to do what they need to accomplish? What if I took a page from my leadership’s playbook, and looked at them as people with challenges and triumphs just like me? What can I do to provide my team what they need to be successful?Servant Leadership on Another LevelServing your staff is the greatest thing you can do for your own company’s goals. When a leader takes on some outward thinking, those served by the leader are empowered to serve customers.Henry Ford once said, “Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you’re right.”Mindset is what drives our behavior. If one’s focus is inward, everyone else in the group also will think about themselves. When we shift our mindsets beyond ourselves, our actions follow and we set a consistent tone for a culture of collaboration. The outward mindset is about tearing down silos. It is about building a culture of trust, collaboration and synergy.Links and ResourcesCheck out The Arbinger Institute at ArbingerInstitute.com.
