JERRY’S SHORT: Take Your Leap of Faith...With a Plan
Do you want to take the plunge and follow your dreams? Before you do, discover why having a plan is essential for success when making a leap of faith! We’ve all heard the old adage “Leap of faith”, but what many don’t know is that taking a leap of faith requires follow-through and commitment. That is where some planning and foresight will come in handy. Having a plan will give you the confidence to leap and continue once the initial rush and excitement have passed. I recently attended The Brunch and Brilliance event hosted by Ashley Ridgeway-Washington. Participants enjoyed some good food and good company as we reflected on our recent year and created a life vision for the new year. Ashley graciously asked me to be one of the event's speakers to share about my recent leap of faith from a well-paying career into entrepreneurship. More specifically, what was the plan that backed my leap of faith? That's what I'm talking about in this installment of Jerry's Short on Beyond the Rut. In this short episode, you will learn the following: Having a financial plan before you leap. Having a vision and why you need both a vision plus a plan. How flexible or rigid should you be with your plan. Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Ep 327How to Advance Your Career with ROI
In order to demonstrate your value at your current or future organization, it is important to be able to discuss how your performance impacts the return on investment (ROI) for your salary. In this episode, Scott Greene from Llama Lounge discusses with Jerry how to talk about your work in terms of return on investment. When we are able to show our organizations that the salary paid to us was multiplied back to them, we are showing a return on investment. That can come in the form of increased revenue or decreased overhead (costs) through improved processes, reduced staff turnover, fewer accidents, and so on. Talking about your accomplishments in terms of financial impact helps companies see your impact on the bottom line. It distinguishes you from the rest of the crowd. W. Ep 325Reframing Mindset During Difficult Times
Our mindset is a powerful tool, allowing us to find solutions when things get tough. Retired CEO, Johnny Sirpilla, shares how you can reframe your mindset during difficult times in your life and at work. Reframing Mindset When things get tough, our mindset is a powerful tool that can help us find solutions. Retired CEO Johnny Sirpilla shares how you can reframe your mindset during difficult times in your life and at work. He suggests that instead of thinking "I have to," we reframe it to "I get to." For example, "I get to go to the gym" or "I get to do this challenging project at work." This small shift in perspective can make a big difference in how we approach difficult tasks. When we think "I have to," it puts us in a negative frame of mind and makes us feel like we're being forced to do something. On the other hand, "I get to" implies that we're choosing to do something, even if it's challenging. This positive framing can help us approach difficult tasks with a sense of enthusiasm and possibility. So next time you're faced with a difficult task, try reframing your mindset from "I have to" to "I get to." This small shift can make a big difference in how you approach the task at hand. Your Character Carries Over from Work-to-Home ...and home-to-work, if we don't take the time to draw a line between the two. It's important to find a healthy balance that works for you. One way to do this is to set aside some time each day to transition from work mode to home mode. For example, you might take a few minutes to put away your work materials, take a break from electronics, or do something relaxing before you start your evening routine. This transition time can help you leave work worries behind and focus on spending quality time with your family and loved ones. It can also help you recharge for the next day so you can show up at work refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way. If you're finding it difficult to balance work and home life, try setting aside some time each day to transition from one to the other. This small change can make a big difference in your ability to find a healthy balance. I don't believe that we can genuinely switch gears and be awful people at work, somebody who verbally and emotionally beats people up, then returns to their home where they're nurturing or welcoming to kids and spouse alike--these are all part of one fabric: our character! In This Episode (0:00) We have the same heart and the same character in our work place that we bring into our home place. (2:27) What it’s like to get into a rut after being at the peak of your life. The Four Voices You have four distinct voices competing for attention over your life. There's the voice of the world, the flesh, the devil, and the Holy Spirit. So how do you discern among the four to let the Holy Spirit lead you in a life worth living? Man in the Mirror Founder Patrick Morley has some answers. He says that the key is to learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit and follow His leading. "The voice of the Spirit is always character building, edifying, encouraging, and motivating," Morley says. "It will never lead you into sin or compromise." So if you're wondering which voice to listen to, ask yourself: does this choice build my character, edify others, encourage me, or motivate me to do good? If the answer is yes, then it's probably the voice of the Holy Spirit. Follow His leading and you'll be on the path to a life worth living. Ep 314Why Living with Faith Is So Important
As a Christian, I am called to live my life by faith – but what does living by faith really mean? W. Scott Greene from The Llama Lounge Podcast joins us for a discussion on that topic. Living by Faith "Without faith, it is impossible to please God." This verse from Hebrews 11:6 has always been a driving force in my life. As a Christian, I am called to live my life by faith – but what does that really mean? And why is living by faith so important? In this episode, we'll explore what it means to live by faith and why Christian men should aspire to do so. We'll look at how living by faith can impact our career decisions, our relationships, and our role as fathers. So what does it mean to live by faith? Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." In other words, faith is trusting in God even when we can't see the outcome. It's about having confidence in God's character and His promises, even when life doesn't make sense. Living by faith requires us to step out in obedience, even when we don't know what the future holds. It's about living in a way that pleases God, even when it doesn't please us. And it's about trusting God, even when we don't understand His plan. So why is living by faith so important? Here are three reasons Christian men should aspire to live their lives by faith. First, living by faith is important because it allows us to please God. As we saw in Hebrews 11:6, without faith it is impossible to please God. Second, living by faith is important because it helps us impact this generation for good. In 2 Corinthians 5:20, we are told that we are "ambassadors for Christ." Finally, living by faith is important because it sets us up for success in the next generation. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, we are told to "carefully observe all these commands I am giving you today, so that you may obey them...response with all your heart and soul." So Christian men, let us aspire to live by faith. Let us please God with our lives, impact this generation for good, and set up the next generation for success. As we do, we will experience the blessings of God and find true satisfaction in Him. In This Episode Living by the Five F’s: Faith, Family, Fitness, Finances, and Future Possibility Growing up in a Christian home Servant leadership Servant leadership applied to marriage Servant leadership applied to fatherhood Examples of living by faith in terms of guiding principles for life W. Ep 307Finding Joy in Life - Yvette Walker
Most of us are looking for happiness. What if we focused on finding joy in life instead? Finding Joy in Life versus Happiness Yvette firmly believes that joy is not a feeling but a state of mind, a way of living your life every day. Many of us may seek moments of happiness, feeling happy without a care in the world. Joy is getting into a state of contentment where you know you’re in your groove making an impact on life, that there are hardships we go through, and that we can turn those downturns in life into our moments of crucibles that create a stronger, flourishing version of ourselves. Pursuits of happiness often deform into a life of experiences where we escape from reality to find a state of being “comfortably numb” to life. We want to be entertained with bigger and more amazing shows. It often reminds us of The Capitol from The Hunger Games where the citizens of Panem were so caught up in their own pleasures rather than meeting the needs of the greater society. The dystopian novel Brave New World also plays on this theme. Joy is when you plug your purpose into your life. You put the oxygen mask on yourself first, breathe deeply, and then put your time and efforts into making the world a better place from a sense of hope that it can be a better place. In This Episode Shoutout to Oklahoma, especially Norman, Oklahoma Why the podcast Positively Joy was created Facing the conflict of personal beliefs when you see the world through the lens of Jesus When you feel called to do a thing, go do that thing Learning that her faith as a Christian could combine with her career The toll of being married to someone who had unmanaged bipolar disorder Going through life “comfortably numb” as Pink Floyd would say Relationship priorities in marriage: God, then spouse, then the children (and why) The topics tackled by Positively Joy, and the power of connection Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself.
