Who will win? Who will die? This will be just the first of a series of 5K challenges we put ourselves through.Part of our story in this episode includes our attempt to carb load the night before the race. Others call it a posse or crew. Okay, that hasn't been true since the 1990s. Whatever we call it, the core elements of the people we should surround us are the same.A culture of action will encourage us when we are down. It will cheer with us in our victories. Most of all, the right group will help us rewrite the negative self-talk we tend to pour into our lives.Becoming a Better ManFatherhood has been the biggest eye-opener for Erik to pursue a journey of self-improvement. If You Only Have Five Years to Live – BtR 045

If you only have five years to live, what would you do with that time? What is most important to you? Where would you go? What needs to be set up for your family's future? That's the direction of today's conversation between Brandon and Jerry. Dismissively call it a mid-life crisis if you like. The reality for many people is we are stuck on Someday Isle, "Someday I'll do _____." This is a rut in our lives. We are not guaranteed tomorrow. We are only given today. This was a big point from our interview with Darius Foroux on BtR 042, How to Retrain Our Minds to Stop Betraying Us. Yesterday is gone, and the future doesn't exist. Therefore, we only have today.Because thinking that we only have today can be a scary concept, consider what if you have five years to live? What if that time were less?Money Considerations in Family FinancesMany families live paycheck-to-paycheck giving little consideration of the future for their loved ones. The "five years to live" approach forced Jerry to consider retirement options, emergency fund needs, bucket list requirements, and what to teach his wife and children so they can go on without him. What's On Your Bucket List?Remember Someday Isle? Where are you with your bucket list?Take a look at your written bucket list. Okay, take a moment to write out your bucket list. Got it now? Take a look at your written bucket list. If you're saying "Someday I'll..." to many or all of these things on your list, then it is time to do something about it.Prioritize that list as you listen to this episode, of course. If you only had one year to live, what would you want to do on this list? What needs to happen to make that happen? Start working towards that today. Two years? What's the next big thing you'd want to do. Start planning now. Keep working towards the first goal though.Three years? Four? You get the picture.Resources and LinksHow to Retrain Our Minds to Stop Betraying Us - BtR 042Just Take Action and Other Insights from Jody Maberry - BtR 027Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Wasting Time in Fear Achieves Nothing – BtR 044

Fear Can Waste Our TimeMany people waste their life and time in fear of failure or fear of success. The interview with Jamie Rodriguez in BtR 043 reminded us that life is too short to let fear keep us from doing something worthwhile. Yes, technically Darius Foroux mentioned it first in episode BtR 042 the week before. The point is that we've picked up on a theme here.We can accomplish things bigger than we could ever have imagined. Fear needs to take the passenger seat rather than the driver's seat.In the case of Jamie, she expanded her view by visiting New York City. That gave her the courage to move forward with her dream. She has fear, and it's not going waste her time any longer. There are things all around us that can show us that doing something big is possible. What will help you see that big things are possible? Brandon and Jerry share the moments when they saw something that blew their minds on what is possible.Going Big is Smaller Than You'd ThinkRemembering the advice we received from Jared Easley in episode 39, doing something big does not have to be something daunting like launching a business or building a city the size of New York.We can have a big impact on ourselves and the lives around us simply by taking one step to being an attentive parent, a tender spouse, a valued coworker. Small steps taken consistently every day will make a big difference in the long run.ResourcesDare to Dream Bigger: Five Ways to Get ThereGo to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Fear holds some of us back before we ever give our dreams a shot.Fear was a powerful tool for survival thousands of years ago. The emotion that once was vital for our survival and key in our development as a society is now be the very thing that holds us back from boldly living.Darius Foroux shares with us his journey from a place of achieving success, the kind of success that everyone told him he should achieve, and pursuing a life that was a better fit for his passions and the kind of life he wanted to live. You'll hear Darius talk about overcoming his own sense of dread in life and made his own path. He'll talk about getting from a point of deciding to no longer live in the rut to reaching the goals he set for himself. Darius had to retrain his mind to look at the world from a different perspective. Our minds are powerful. Our thoughts will determine whether we take action or hold back. It’s the Little Things – Follow Up to the Jared Easley Interview BtR 041

A small drip of water, consistently hitting the same spot on a rock over and over, every day will eventually cut a deep channel into that rock. It's the little things that make a big difference when we do them repeatedly over time.Brandon and Jerry take a few minutes to reflect on how their relationship with Jared Easley began and reflect on their Episode 39 interview with him.Jared Easley is the host of Starve the Doubts podcast who works as a consultant by day and is a noticer and podcaster whenever he's not doing his consulting work. While having a great time talking with Jared, there were nuggets that arose from the interview. He takes a more profound and simpler view of what it would take to get yourself out of whatever rut you face. Maybe it doesn't have to be a lot of extra work. What are some major changes you made to your own life by simply taking a small pivot in what you do every day?In what ways are you noticing the work of others and collaborating for mutual success? Pocketful of Sunshine Father Daughter Vacation Check-In BtR 040

Singing Pocketful of Sunshine Can you imagine Brandon jamming out to Adele or singing Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine"? That has been just the start of his father-daughter vacation with Maddy as they drive from Texas to New Mexico and on a loop back to Texas. After seeing sites like the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico and the Bottomless Lake, Brandon and Maddy take a moment to call in for an interview and update on how things are going from their hotel room in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It's About Making MemoriesAs you listen to this episode, you'll realize that the sites and activities do not matter as much as spending time together with family. Brandon is intentional about setting aside one-on-one time with his children and step-children. Maddy has had quite a bit of say in where they go on their trip, and she gives some advice on how to make a trip like this worthwhile.Brandon and Maddy also answer the question of, "Why take a trip like this? What is different about taking a vacation together as father and daughter that you can't get from just hanging out together at home?"They also discuss what went into planning this trip, and how you can do it, too. What Was Your Most Memorable Vacation?Share with us what your more memorable family vacation was. Was it from your childhood? What do you remember most, and why is that memory so magical for you? Comment below and let us know. We'd love to hear from you. Now, I leave you with a music video of "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield, so you can try to picture Brandon wailing away with Maddy in a car in the middle of the desert. Vacation with Your Kids 1-on-1 BtR 038

Vacation With Your Kids Before It's Too LateBrandon goes out of his way to connect with his kids with quality one-on-one time. He has to when he has a blended family with five children. It's easy for any one child to feel left out when we are doing everything we can to provide the best life for them.Whether you have one children or more than five, Brandon and Jerry talk about why you should plan a vacation with each of your children to build memories that will last a lifetime. Can't Afford a Vacation with Each Child? How to Lose Weight Without Dieting – BtR 037

A few weeks ago while recording episodes 35 and 35 of Beyond the Rut, Brandon noticed that Jerry had been getting thinner. In fact, by that time Jerry had lost 16 pounds since the start of 2016.Here's the crazy thing. Jerry did not adopt any gimmicky diets. He didn't go Vegan. He ate whatever he wanted and simply changed the when and how he ate.Brandon and Jerry discuss how to lose weight without dieting in this episode.Giving Credit Where Credit is DueThe program discussed in this episode is nothing Jerry developed on his own. He was able to join a program called NaturallySlim through his work's wellness program for free! The 10-week program has since rocked his world challenging everything he ever thought about eating, dieting, and what was healthy or not. The epiphany for Jerry has been that the best way to lose weight has not been about what he eats as much as it has been about when and how he eats.Disclaimer: Seek the advice of your physician or dietitian before trying a program like this, especially if you have special dietary needs or medical conditions.Resources and LinksUse Your Smartphone to Lose Weight (Buy it on Kindle)11 Healthy Eating Habits of the Super Fit (Chalene Johnson)Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Former NFL Player Jason Brown Told Us No and That’s Okay – BtR 036

Connect with us. Email a comment or question for the show, [email protected]. Or, call and leave a message to play in a future episode, (361) 596-3788.Our Story with Former NFL Player Jason BrownMost people we know hate being told no. We recently reached out to former NFL player Jason Brown. He's the player who gave up a multi-million dollar contract to take up farming for a cause. You can read the 2014 Business Insider article here. Read it while you listen to this episode though. The NFL farmer didn't grant us an interview. He gracefully told us know, and it was the best rejection letter we ever received. See for yourself.Hello Brandon! Thank you for reaching out to us! We appreciate your consideration for a podcast interview, however we are not accepting media requests at this time. We prefer to focus on our faith, family and farm. We wish you and your show all the best. Peace and blessings!Of course, now we want to interview him more than ever! Listen to this episode as we break down all the things Jason Brown did right in his response to us, and why we love it so much. Seriously, we loved his response so much that it's actually a lesson we are sharing with you!Sometimes the Answer is NoYou've probably heard motivational speakers and coaches tell you mantras like, "No is not an option!" and "If you want to succeed, you have to learn to get to the yes!"FACT: No is sometimes the right option as well. We all need skills at handling being told no, and discerning what that no is telling us.What do you do when the answer is no?When can you tell that being told no is a good thing?Remember that when you hear, no, you're not necessarily stuck at a dead end. It may be a sign that you need to beef up skills in a certain area of your life. It may mean that you need redirection. No does not mean you're at an endpoint on your path. There Are No Perfect ConditionsWhen it comes to telling ourselves no, remember that there are no perfect conditions. We cannot know ALL the information that is available. There may not be information available from our current position. It may not be feasible to wait until you have all the facts."Everything we know for certain is in the rut with us!"Resources and Links (Podcast Roll Style)We went name-drop crazy in this episode. Lessons Learned in Podcast Audience Growth – BtR 035

Connect with us. Email a comment or question for the show, [email protected]. Or, call and leave a message to play in a future episode, (361) 596-3788.Lessons LearnedSeven months ago, we launched Beyond the Rut Podcast after eight months of planning and replanting. There were successes and failures along the way. While we gave advice and encouragement, we also found ourselves faced with discouragement and needing advice ourselves. That's where we came across advice that helped us see things with a new perspective. Listen in on how feedback from our audience helped us make a major format shift at the start of 2016.It wasn't just listening to our current audience that helped us out in those first seven months. We became avid fans and students of podcasters like Jared Easley, Jody Maberry, and Jeff Goins studying how they shared their uniqueness, structured, their shows, and applied what we learned to Beyond the Rut.A funny thing began to happen. We started following our own advice. It started with looking within our own circles of influence for our first interviews, and we found them with Davidson Young of The Leaders Foundry Podcast and Sara McDaniel of the blog titled Simply Sara. We got out of our comfort zones with those first two interviews placing our faith and trust in the insights of others. We're podcasters not photographers! One thing is for certain. Beyond the Rut today is different than when we started. Whatever you start today may not be where you are in six months if you're making forward progress and considering the feedback you're getting from the field.Podcast Audience GrowthOur audience has been growing from dozens of unique downloads per month to hundreds! It's still far short of where we want to be, and it is also a victory in ways. Here are some things we learned about podcast audience growth: Appreciate the audience you have now. Engage your audience by asking for feedback. Focus on providing valuable content to your audience. Meet new people through your current circles. Our biggest leaps in our podcast audience growth have come through the connections we already had in our lives.Resources and LinksBtR 027 - Just Take Action and Other Insights from Jody MaberryBtR 031 - Benjamin Hardy on Happiness, Reality, and Writing for YourselfBtR 032 - Cynthia Tripathi on Sparking Positive Momentum and Escamping AverageSecrets of a Great Podcast with Jeff Brown - The Jody Maberry Show (on iTunes)Do Over: Rescue Monday, Reinvent Your Work, and Never Get Stuck by Jon Acuff (Buy it on Amazon)Podcasting Good to Great: How to Grow Your Audience Through Collaboration by Jared Easley (Buy it on Amazon)Fuzzy's Taco Shop Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. The Leadership Challenge of Self-Doubt and How to Beat It – BtR 034

Beating Self-DoubtWe bring Davidson Young back for another interview on the show where we ask him to tell us about the most common leadership rut his clients find themselves. While the host of The Leaders Foundry didn't share a common rut, he did identify the most common root cause. That common root cause of leadership ruts according to Davidson is self-doubt.It often sets in when a leader takes on a new role, a new department, or a new function.Self-doubt for a leader can lead to not communicating confidently and clearly with one's team. It could be the difference between taking decisive action towards success or stalling into failure. We don't have to be in a leadership role to be taken down by our own self-doubts. Have you ever stalled on a goal because you doubted whether you were qualified? How many years has that been now? See what I mean?Davidson shares tips on how to overcome self-doubt including speaking out the problem, role playing, and walking through the issue. You can and should overcome that self-doubt. This episode will share how.A Possible Return to Corporate Life?In episode 22 of Beyond the Rut, Davidson shared his story about what it took to leave corporate life to pursue his passion as a leadership consultant. Not only is Davidson a coach, he also receives coaching. That's brilliant! What if the thing Davidson needs to do is to return to corporate life? That is a possibility, and it's a decision that Davidson will have to consider in context of his goals, passions, family needs, and more. Listen to the episode to find out his thought process and he'll make his decision.Resources and LinksBtR 024 - Growth By Encouraging and Mentoring OthersBtR 028 - When Do You Know It's Time to Throw in the Towel?BtR 003 - Reading Towards Your Success, Why What Is On Your Bookshelf Influences Your Success Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. Lessons from the Presidential Election – BtR 030

Why do people run in a presidential election in the United States? How do we translate that to our own lives?2016 Presidential ElectionJeb Bush recently suspended his bid in the 2016 presidential election. He had the financial support, but could not garner the public support of his party to win the nomination for the Republican Party's ticket. He tried and failed. What can you learn from his experience?Jerry and Brandon tackle the question of why do people run for U.S. President putting themselves through months of the most brutal sales pitch in the country? Emotional Intelligence and Building Emotional Capital – BtR 029

Emotional IntelligenceEmotional Intelligence is the idea that we can be aware of our own emotions and attuned to the emotions of others. This includes the ability to build relationships and keep healthy relationships whether at home, school, or work. The better we can harness the power of relationships at work the more we can see doors open for us and pull ourselves out of a rut.Build Emotional CapitalSusan Scott, author and executive coach, talks about emotional intelligence as if we each have personal emotional bank accounts. Each person we encounter is either making a deposit or a withdrawal from our emotional bank account. The same is true for our impact on others. Every interaction we have is either making an emotional deposit in someone's life or making a debit from that account. In this episode, Jerry shares an instance where someone who is a taker in the workplace had a difficult time getting a project completed after months and months of toil. People avoided working with her. Information was rarely forthcoming. She often had to resort to power plays and calling on someone's authority. This is the result of many years of missing the mark on workplace relationships, give and take, compromise, and taking care of people. When Do You Know It’s Time to Throw in the Towel? BtR 028

It's Time to Throw in the Towel, Jeb!We hear all kinds of messages and inspiration about never quitting, giving 110%, and many other cliches. The 2016 Presidential Primary Race has shown us that there is a time when it makes sense to just throw in the towel and call it quits.Maybe you have money and your reputation on the line. Things are not going the way you expected. It is possible you are at a point where you know if you continue on the course you are on now, you will absolutely fail. How do you let go of a dream you have pursued for years, especially if you have wanted it your entire life as far back as you can remember? When do you know it is time to throw in the towel or go in a different direction?Brandon and Jerry discuss three areas that will help us know when it is time to throw in the towel.PeopleMetricsA written planHaving the right people around you is crucial in recognizing when you have reached a point of no return. You will learn criteria on how to select a good adviser, listen to customers, and ask coworkers for feedback. We know where we are going because we measure the distance we have traveled. The metrics you collect will differ depending on what you are trying to accomplish. It is important to have measures that tell you how you are doing. For Jeb Bush, it was the polls and maybe his dwindling campaign fund. What are your metrics for your dream or goal? It's hard to know what to measure if you do not have an idea of where you want to be. A written plan is vital. Combining your written plan with your metrics and the feedback from others will help you understand whether you need to quit, adjust your plan, or change course altogether.Make it so giving feedback to you is quick and easy for others. When you are approached with feedback, welcome it and receive it.Resources and LinksMalcolm Gladwell TED Talk about Ragu sauceBtR 022 - Leaving Corporate Life to Pursue a Dream, Interview with Davidson Young of The Leaders Foundry PodcastConnect With UsSubscribe on iTunesSubscribe on StitcherEmail: [email protected]: 361-596-3788, tell us what you'd like us to cover and how we can help you make your own path and live a life beyond the rut.Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. A Simple Life is a Bigger Life – an Interview with Sara McDaniel BtR 025

Brandon and Jerry interview Sara McDaniel from the blog SimplySara.com about simple living as bigger living, significance from service to others, getting out of our comfort zones, and lifting herself from the rut of divorce. How are you currently living to get out of your comfort zone?"A simple life is a bigger life." - Brandon CunninghamJeff Goins' Wrecked Vision Trip in GuatemalaSara took a leap of faith out of her comfort zone by joining Jeff Goins and other strangers on his Wrecked mission trip to Guatemala where she served the needs of those who lived in the lowest level of poverty she had ever witnessed. A Bigger Life by Serving OthersWhile she is someone who travels throughout the United States of America for her day job, this was her first trip to a foreign country. The trip changed her in a way that she continues to serve the needs of those in poverty back home in Corpus Christi, Texas through her church's Taking It to the Streets ministry.Sara's revelation that led her to living a simple life and serving those in poverty involved a realization that she was living her life initially to the expectations of others. Status symbols, career ladders, and family status are no longer the metrics she uses to measure the impact of her life. Microfears, Overcoming Fear That Hits You for a Moment BtR 023

Overcoming fear is a key part to pursuing your dream. Once in a while, even when things are going well, fear may creep up on you.Davidson Young left us with a term in BtR 022 that has had Brandon excited for many weeks, microfears. Shortly after leaving corporate life to pursue his passion as a leadership consultant, he would be in a park walking his dogs when fear would strike. It would last just a brief moment, but in that brief moment he'd thing about losing customers, not gaining new business, going bankrupt and then becoming homeless. After a few seconds of near panic, it would subside and he would continue on with his day.A microfear according to Davidson is a fear that hits you for a brief moment out of nowhere. It's not so much the scope of the fear itself, but the duration. They're brief. If left unchecked, they can spiral into something much worse and and debilitating. In this episode, Brandon and Jerry discuss microfears a little deeper and share insights to Davidson's ability to overcome fear and make those moments of fear small, passing moments. They're microfears because Davidson chooses to make them so, his secret to overcoming fear includes things like having a plan, stating the assets and resources he has that make his fears ridiculous, and choosing to move forward with his day.Resources and LinksThe Leaders Foundry PodcastHow to Use Self-Talk to Your Advantage BtR 002How and Why to Get Out of the Victim Mentality BtR 020Download this episode (right-click and save as)Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. From Ferris Bueller to Scheduling What Matters Most BtR 021

Ferris Bueller?Yes, there was a discussion about the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off and some of the life lessons we drew from the movie about making your own path against what is normal in our society. While this episode is by no means an analysis of the movie, we gained some insights from how Ferris Bueller refused to be so eager to follow in the corporate footsteps of his dad and how it contrasted with Cameron's struggle to stay in that box. All because I said, "Brandon is a righteous dude."Schedule What Matters MostWe tend to put our time far from our priorities. Building off the message from BtR 017 regarding Time Management, we dive deeper into the importance of a schedule that notes our milestones, deadlines, and blocking time for what is most important to us.Some of the things that we may consider most important include the following:Morning spiritual timeTime with familyHealthy lunch breakPhysical fitnessPersonal growth (reading)PodcastingAnd so much moreWhatever it is you consider most important in your life, how do you set aside time to consistently pursue those aspects of your life?Bottom lineRespect yourself by respecting and protecting your time with the tips from this episode.ResourcesThe Last Lecture by Randy PauschSeven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven CoveyFerris Bueller's Day OffSlack.com - This is the web-based communication tool we use to stay on track with our tasks for Beyond the Rut.NeuYear Calendar and special promo code. How and Why to Get Out of the Victim Mentality Rut – BtR 020

Victim Mentality - When Bad Things Happen to Good PeopleIt's a fact of life. Bad things happen to good people. Bad things also happen to bad people. Bad things just happen. That fact of life does not matter as much as how we respond to it. The worse thing that can happen to any of us is to succumb to a victim mentality, wallowing in that event in a negative, unhealthy way. The victim mentality can prevent people from taking action towards their success. In many cases, it'll be the very thing that talks you out of making your own path before you ever get started. You've probably heard some of these signs of a victim mentality around you, maybe even spoken by you.I can't get hired in this economyThey replaced me with a machineSomeone took my jobThat boss was out to get meMen cheat! They all cheat! It's okay to grieve. It's not okay to stop living life. At some point, you need to make a choice to get out of the rut of a victim mentality. BtR 016 – Go Pick a Fight, Why and How to Use Opposing Perspectives

Why Opposing Perspectives? We're not telling you to go pick a fight at a bar. In fact, we're not telling you to do anything violent at all. Please, do not go out and physically fight someone and blame it on this podcast episode. We're talking about the value of tapping into perspectives that are different, even opposite, of your own point of view.Yes, we have said, and will continue to say, that you should not tell a lot of people when you are first setting out on a dream or goal. Too much opposition early on can squash your confidence and courage to even get started. There is a time however when you're on your path that differing and opposing perspectives will help you along.Five Reasons Why You Should Seek Out Opposing PerspectivesIt forces you to expand your base of knowledge - look up facts, do more research, learn more about the opposing side. You will actively engage the "why" underlying your own beliefs.Anyone can lash out emotionally. Respect and credibility comes to those who learn to express themselves intelligently and calmly.Points out your own bad ideas so you can make the best possible decisions.Let's you know if you are engaging a big enough circle of people with a big enough topic or purpose. We place ourselves in a rut when we see the world from only one perspective.Diversity is a Good ThingWe should challenge what is sacred in our beliefs for the very reasons stated above. Those who coach and mentor us should be trustworthy and able to bring a different perspective to our lives. The question is whether or not you will have the courage to invite, digest, and use opposing perspectives to help you make your own path. It takes courage to bring an opposing perspective. It takes even more courage to respectfully listen to it and admit it in those moments when we have to change something within ourselves. No matter what, it is worth having differing points of view.Links and ResourcesThe Cautionary Tale of the Dixie Chicks Controversy - There's a difference between seeking opposing perspectives and being controversial.Heart Disease versus Breast CancerBook - The Noticer by Andy Andrews (Buy it on Amazon)Book - My First Study Bible: Exploring God's Word on My Own (Listen to the episode to see why Brandon recommended this title.)Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself. BtR 007 – Tired of Being Tired (Physical Health)

Tired of being tired? So are we. Your family and career will both benefit from you getting healthy. Most of us have tried and failed a million times. Take a step back from all of that and consider some of the most basic, time tested practices that could have almost immediate benefits.Your plan to getting healthy should be simple. You don't need to be a nutritional or fitness expert. You just need to use a little common sense and take a small step...today! A little habit leads to a little health, and a little health will eventually lead to bigger habits and greater health. This isn't about losing weight; it's about having energy for life!Go to BeyondTheRut.com/capsho for your free 14-day trial and see for yourself.
