Ep 208Chaz Dean (on Lisa Rinna, RHOBH, Nicollette Sheridan, 90210 and his Hair Empire)
EChaz Dean steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from the Hollywood Hills home he shares with his three Labradors, Chaz is here to tell it all. First things first, Chaz fills us in on his journey from his early days of working at a LA Salon to eventually purchasing that salon, developing WEN hair care products, taking over QVC and, of course, those infamous WEN infomercials - think Alyssa Milano and Brooke Shields - that we all love so much. Speaking of celebrities such as Brooke and Alyssa, his very first well known client was Nicolette Sheridan and from there things just took off. She told a friend who told a friend and soon he was doing hair for much of the Aaron Spelling Empire. That empire included such Superstars as 90210’s very own Shannen Doherty, Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. As their stylist, Chaz heard and knew it all! The things he could, and does, tell! Let us not forget there was a time way back when where Shannen, Tori and Jennie didn’t exactly all see eye to eye. Our very own RHOBH Lisa Rinna was also a client and is a current friend. What happened when Nicolette Sheridan walked into his Salon one day while Rinna was in his chair? Umm, yea, exactly what you are thinking. Not well. There was also that one time he had to run to Casa Rinna for a Delilah Belle Hamlin hair emergency. Chaz has stories for days and we are LIVING for it. Chaz is also close with Liza Vanderpump. Wait, how does that work also being friends with Rinna? Are you starting to see a trend? Tune in to hear it all - Chaz Dean, the man behind the WEN empire, chats about business, hair and what we love best, Celebrity on this Part I sit down of our interview with Chaz Dean. @chazdean @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by http://www.fiverr.com/business (use code VELVET) Brought to you by http://www.adamandeve.com (use code ROPE) Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 207The Bachelor's Lacey Mark (on Matt James, Current Season, & Clare / Dale )
EWho isn’t watching the current 25th Season of ABC’s The Bachelor, one of the longest running Reality TV Shows in history. Who better than to help us break it all down than someone who has lived it first hand. This is the Behind The Velvet Rope Podcast after all and that is how we do it, first hand all day, every day. Enter Lacey Mark, former Bachelor Season 21 and Bachelor in Paradise Season 4 contestant. First we catch up with Lacey finding out everything she has been up to since looking for love and roses on national TV. Speaking of looking for love on national TV, Lacey chats about The Bachelor application / interview process, filming the hit show, the other women - the good, the bad, the other, and last, but certainly not least, her edit. She also talks about Bachelor Nick Viall, who was supposed to be her “Knight In Shining Armor”, and discuses the likelihood of finding ever lasting love on a Reality TV show. Lacey and David chat about their fav Bachelors and Bachelorettes of all time and the epic last season of The Bachelorette - Clare Crawley “blowing it up”, her supposed rumored communication with Dale before the show, their recent break up as a couple, and Tayshia Adams as a replacement. Of course, we talk all things current season - how hot Matt James is, the drama that has already occurred amongst the women, the cringeworthy moments (think Dildos on arrival, thank you Katie), Sarah removing herself, Queen Victoria, the new girls, Chris Harrison in all his glory, the rumored frontrunners, and who will get that infamous final rose, and possible marriage proposal, mere weeks from now. If you are a Bachelor fan, your time has finally come. Bachelor Nation’s Lacey Mark has arrived to help us make sense of it all. @laceymmark @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by http://www.adamandeve.com (use code ROPE) Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Ep 206LISA BARLOW - (An Interview with RHOSL's Tequila & Sundance Queen)
ELisa Barlow, hot off the RHOSL finale, steps Behind The Rope (with special guest appearance by John Barlow). The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’s Lisa Barlow and we could not be more excited to chat with her about this new stellar addition to the franchise. After a brief background on Lisa, where she grew up, how she ended up in Salt Lake, where she met husband John Barlow, and all things Vida Tequila (yes kids, we have a new Housewives’ product!), we get right into all the current drama on the freshman season of RHOSL. Lisa explains which franchises she watched prior to being cast on the show, how she originally got involved in the show, why Salt Lake is the perfect location for a Real Housewives show and what other Bravolebrities and Housewives she heard from now that the show has aired. Lisa dives deep on her many year friendship with fellow cast mate Meredith Marks and is happy to discuss all of her new “friends” Jen Shah, Mary Cosby, Heather Gay, and Whitney Rose. Lisa chats about who she thinks was authentically themselves during filming and was portrayed accurately now that the show has aired. She also chats about who loved the camera a little too much and brought the drama even when there was no drama needed to be brought. On that note, Lisa opens up about what what she thinks is the biggest misconception of herself, reflects back on some of the seasons already iconic moments and chats about what she plans, if anything, to do differently for Season Two. With our prodding, she addresses Vanderpump Rules Katie Maloney’s recent comments about her “Queen of Sundance” title that Jen Shah bestowed upon her. Thank you Lisa. Finally, we discuss the Vida Tequila event Bethenny Frankel attended back in the day and what she has to now say to the Skinnygirl Mogul. A true RHOSL extravaganza not to be missed. @lisabarlow14 @johnbarlow16 @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by http://www.adamandeve.com (use code ROPE) Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 205Randall Emmett (Vanderpump Rules) - Part II
ERandall Emmett steps back Behind The Rope. Back in a simpler time, before the exciting news of Randall and Lala’s pregnancy announcement, before the cast changes on Vanderpump Rules, back when all our favorite VanderKids were still a part of the gang, before Scheana and Jax and who knows who next was with child, we sat down with Randall for a special two part chat (Part I aired June 24th 220. Feel free to check it out). Today we bring you the very special second part to that chat. How interesting to listen to just how much things gave changed in what, six short months? Randall talks to us about his friendships in the Vander Group, how he became one of the boys, and what couple date nights with Lala and the other VanderKids is like. Randall and David discuss the evolution of the cast from living in small apartments to being “on top of the world”. Where else do you get a job as a waiter and end up a millionaire. From a Producer point of view, and Randall is one of the best, we discuss. We talk about how he would never be able to do Lala's job, or the job of any reality TV star who has to “put it all out there”. We chat about Randall’s upcoming nuptials to Lala and the cast, sorry Sandoval, who are most likely going to be part of the wedding. We also discuss whether his upcoming wedding will be part of the upcoming Vanderpump Rules season. Speaking of Sandoval, we chat about his current relationship with Jax and the tumultuous past season of Vanderpump Rules. We talk about other cast members such as Kristen, Scheana and James. Being a fellow Podcast host, we discuss “Give them Lala with Randall”. We also discuss Randall's new film as a first time director and his matchmaker abilities, think Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly. Finally, Randall is kind enough to entertain all of David’s questions regarding 50 Cent and the legend that will forever be “FOFTY”!!! @randallemmett @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by http://www.adamandeve.com (use code ROPE) Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Ep 204Flipping Out's Megan Weaver (on Jeff Lewis, Flipping Out, and all her Housewife / Bravolebrity BFFs)
EFlipping Out’s Megan Weaver steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her bed, no really Megan is in bed, in The Valley, Megan is here to tell it all. Owning her Valley Girl status, Megan takes us back to the beginning, her first job was working as a Production Assistant for Steven Spielberg. She worked on them all, Jurassic Park, Men in Black, Twister, Schindler’s List and saw them all Antonio Banderas, Tom Hanks, and oh, there was that one time she stayed in Leo DiCaprio’s Malibu Beach House. How did Megan get from Spielberg to Megan Weaver Design? One day she met Jeff Lewis in a restaurant bathroom, and soon Megan found herself working for our favorite House Flipper and starring on Bravo’s Hit Show, “Flipping Out”. Megan, being a prior fan of the show, recalls how excited she was during her interview when Zoila and Jenni were there, floating around working at Jeff Lewis Design. We discuss the first time she realized Jeff Lewis’ work style may be a “little different" than Megan was used to. Ok fine, that is an understatement. We talk about some of Megan and Jeff’s Housewife BFFS, Kelly Dodd, Shannon Storms Beador and Teddi Mellencamp. Yes Megan and Jeff did Teddi’s much criticized ALL IN Program. Do tell. She does! Megan discusses the fall out between Jeff and Jenni Pulos, the current status of that relationship, how that affected her own relationship with Jenni and what she predicts for the future of that relationship. Megan also opens up about Jeff’s relationship with Gage Edward, the end of that relationship and Jeff’s new man, Scott Anderson. We also discuss her work on Lala and Randall’s house as well as Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green's house. Speaking of Brian Austin Green (anything for a shameless 90210 reference), Jeff’s current neighbor is Machine Gun Kelly which leads to a very interesting conversation! @megancatalina @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by http://www.adamandeve.com (use code ROPE) Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. EJo De La Rosa, one of the OGs of the OC, steps Behind The Rope. Let us start at the beginning of it all, Season One, Episode One of The Real Housewives of Orange Country. Jo explains how she got cast in the freshman installment of the juggernaut franchise. The answer is not at all what you would expect. We talk about what filming was like for Jo, considering she had nothing to compare it to with The Hills, The Real World and The Simple Life being some of her only predecessors to turn to. We discuss some of Jo’s highlights from her time on RHOC, wanting to not be a “kept woman”, those dramatic always happening fights with then fiancé Slade Smiley, and that infamous French Maid's costume. Speaking of Slade, Jo discusses the end of her relationship with him and how she felt when he went on to date Fellow RHOC Housewives Lauri Peterson and Gretchen Rossi, who he is still with to this day. Jo discusses some of her past co-stars such as Vicki Gunvalson and Jeana Keough and how and why she decided to leave the show for life in Los Angeles. She also discusses her short lived follow up classic Bravo Show “Date My Ex: Jo & Slade”. We also discuss how she is not only the youngest housewife to ever be a part of the franchise (she was 24 when she joined, yes 24) but also how she was the first Housewife to ever have a hit song (fun fact: she worked with Erika Jayne's Creative Director, Mikey Minden, on the Video / Tour Choreography). We discuss her fellow Housewives Songstresses Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, Erica Jayne, Kim Zolciak-Biermann, Kandi Burruss and Melissa Gorga. Jo opens up about what life was like when the flashbulbs faded. Fun story, it involved a bartending job and TMZ. Jo is now trying to “reinvent” herself in LA through her stellar PopCandy Podcast and booming YouTube Channel, documenting the art of the comeback and the life of becoming an influencer. As she looks ahead with these and various other projects, she spends the hour with us looking back at her legacy in The Real Housewives of Orange Country Franchise. EOdd Mom Out’s Sean Kleier steps Behind The Rope. Yes, Lex Von-Weber from Bravo’s classic scripted series Odd Mom Out. So many questions, so little time. Sean chats with us about how he originally met series creator Jill Kargman. Based on her book Momzillas, Odd Mom out chronicled the wealthy mommy clique that resides in New York’s prestigious Upper East Side. Sean explains the casting process, what attracted him to the role of Lex Von-Weber and how much fun it was to act on this Bravo series each week for three years. Part of that fun was due to costarring with, not only Jill Kargman, but the brilliant Abby Elliot and Icon Joanna Cassidy. Sean is kind enough to answer our many questions about off camera shenanigans between cast members and chat with him about why the show ended and where he thinks Lex Von-Weber would be today. Of course, having been on Bravo, we chat about Sean’s own experience with our friends “The Real Housewives” and of course Mr. Andy Cohen and his infamous Watch What Happens Live appearance. We also chat about Odd Mom Out’s multitude of guest stars including, but not limited to, Jill’s sister in law at the time, Drew Barrymore! Ep 197Sirius XM's Jenny Hutt (on IRL friendships with Bethenny Frankel, Martha Stewart, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand & More)
EJenny Hutt steps Behind The Rope. Let us start at the beginning. Jenny was born in Roslyn, Long Island to Charles & Bunny Koppelman. A “big wig” in the record industry, her Dad knew them all. By all, we mean he worked with the likes of Barbara Streisand, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Vanilla Ice. Jenny grew up going on vacations with Barbara Streisand and “hanging out” with Dolly Parton. Obsessed with Rap Music at a young age, RUN DMC played at her Sweet Sixteen Party and The Beastie Boys were also in attendance. Remember the MTV Show “My Super Sweet 16”? Ok, you get the idea. After college Jenny went to Law School, before accepting a position as her Dad’s executive assistant for his newly found position as Chairman and Right Hand Man to Martha Stewart at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. It was at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia that Martha’s daughter Alexis befriended her and decided, hey, we are going to have a radio show together. For the next several years, Jenny and Alexis hosted “Whatever with Alexis & Jennifer” at SiriusXM. That Radio show led to a TV Show on the Hallmark Chanel of the same name where they interviewed a variety of guests such as national treasure Paula Abdul. It was also during this time that Martha and Jenny’s Dad starred on a little known reality show called “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart”. Jenny couldn’t believe her eyes when one of her college friends was a contestant on the show, Miss Bethenny Frankel. Jenny enlightens us with what Bethenny was like in college and how even way back when, she was determined to know and have it all. Jenny has a funny story about Bethenny selling motorcycles in Europe. Yup, always the hustler, even back then. Regarding the radio show, one day Alexis was “over it” and the show ended, leaving Jenny to form her own stellar SiriusXM Radio Show “Just Jenny”. Jenny talks to us about some of her favorite guests such as Kerry Washington, Rob Lowe and, oh yea, she was able to connect with childhood “friend” Dolly Parton for a formal sit down interview. Finally, we discuss her brilliant invention, Bunny Eyez, the flippable, tiltable, wearable reading glasses, discuss whether she would ever take that invention on Shark Tank and of course, discuss once of life’s most important questions, which shark would you chose to invest. An episode not to be missed. @justjennyhutt @bunnyeyez @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Brought to you by Trivia Star (a Super Lucky Game) - Download Trivia Star in Apple or Google Store Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 196VICKI GUNVALSON (The OG of the OC) - Tells All!
EThe OG of the OC Miss Vicki Gunvalson steps Behind The Rope. First Vicki fills us all in on what she has been up to since we last saw her on our TV screens. For those of you who don’t know, she bought a house in Mexico, had a stellar Whoop It Up Podcast (which BTVR appeared on), has been running Coto Insurance, and has just been enjoying time with her family (Steve, Michael, Brianna, Ryan & The Boys). Vicki and David discuss the trajectory of being a Housewife - the beginning (so hopeful), the middle (save your $), the inevitable end (Cue The Five Stages of grief). We discuss the concept of resigning and quitting versus being fired and let go. Vicki lets us know what advice she would give, not only to Season One Vicki, but other Housewives starting out and what she has learned throughout the years during her tenure on the hit Bravo show. Speaking of the beginning, Vicki and David discuss how much the show has changed since the beginning - the salaries, the vacations, the women, the drama! We discuss the involvement of producers and editing throughout the years and the concept of “reality” as it exists, or lack thereof, in any reality TV show these days. Vicki opens up about her highs and lows during her fourteen years on the show. We discuss the evolution of her relationships that we saw play out on national TV - Don, Brooks, Steve. Vicki discusses her relationships with Kelly Dodd (where she thinks it all went wrong), Tamra Judge (going strong), Shannon Beador (can it be repaired?) as well as RHOC past Jeana Keough, Meghan King Edmonds, Heather Durbrow and Alexis (“Jesus Jugs”) Bellino. Vicki is honest about what she misses the most about Housewives and answers the age old question, would you ever go back? Finally, no sit down with The OG of the OC would be complete without a trip down memory lane regarding some of Vicki’s most iconic moments - the State of Oklahoma. Slade Smiley’s infamous comment and her plastic surgeries throughout the years, Lauri Peterson’s Ski Slope “multiple partners” and of course, last but certainly not least, just how many people can you fit into a family van? @vickigunvalson @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Brought to you by Trivia Star (a Super Lucky Game). EJulie Goldman and Brandy Howard from Bravo’s The People’s Couch step back Behind The Rope (Part I of our sit down aired December 8, 2020 - feel free to check it out). Julie and Brandy get right into it. They talk about how they went from being cast members on The People Couch to official hosts of The Vanderpump Rules After Show. Of course we needed all the details on the many Pump Rules guests on their show - Jax, James, Kristen, Brittany, Lala and of course, the Queen herself, LVP. They discuss how you prepare to interview LVP and Giggy and what the set was like the days Lisa & Giggy were there. They also explain what it was like to hang with the Pump kids in a social setting. Do tell. They do. They discuss their multiple appearances on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen plus their appearances on Radio Andy. There was also this one time prior to all this that they attended an Andy Cohen book signing! On a more serious note, Brandy opens up about the dark period she fell into after The People’s Couch ended and how her and Julie reinvented themselves as the hosts of the Dumb Gay Politics Podcast, a podcast for people who know nothing about politics, aka politics made fun. Ep 194Lisa D'Amato (America's Next Top Model - Tells All on Tyra, The Show, & Shark Tank) - Part I
ELisa D’Amato, from America’s Next Top Model, steps Behind The Rope. Holding nothing back, Lisa is here to tell it all. Starting her modeling career at the young age of twelve, Lisa learned many of the tricks of the trade, which would later help her when she applied to America’s Next Top Model on a dare. That worked out well and Lisa soon found herself on Cycle Five of the hit Reality Show, competing for the affection and approval of one Miss Tyra Banks. Lisa chats about what living in the model house was really like, the competitiveness of her fellow model contestants and the pressure she felt from producers while filming. She chats about ANTM judges Miss J, Nigel Barker, Twiggy and last, but certainly not least, Janice Dickinson as well as about Creative Director Jay Manuel. Lisa confirms and debunks many of the vicious rumors heard over the years about the tension on the set and the “my way or the highway” rumored attitude of Tyra Banks. Leaving no detailed spared, Lisa explains how she felt she was treated by Tyra and Producers, the good, the bad, the other. There was a lot of bad and a lot of other. We discuss! She chats about her status as “fan favorite” once the show aired, largely in part due to her outspoken nature. That outspoken nature found her back on ANTM, this time "All Stars”, Cycle Seventeen, which she won. She chats abut how life changed as a result of winning ANTM and what came next. That next eventually included her Dare-U-Go! product pitch on Shark Tank, where she got a deal with the one and only Miss Barbara Corcoran. She takes us behind the scenes of Shark Tank and all the shenanigans taking place behind the scenes off camera. @lisa_damato @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Brought to you by Trivia Star (a Super Lucky Game). Ep 193Vicky Vox (on Drag Race, RuPaul, Real Housewives and Filming with Patti Stanger) - Part II
EVicky Vox steps Back Behind The Rope (Part I of our sit down aired on December 4th, 2020. Feel free to check it out. Vicky came directly from Kelly Osbourne’s birthday party, a little hungover, to dish it all!). Vicky originally decided to do Drag because she needed the $50 pay day that came along with the job. She got herself some clothes and heels, picked her name, and the rest is history. Quickly adopted, shortly thereafter, by Drag Mother Detox, the two have been fast friends ever since. That friendship saw Detox through her star turn on RuPaul’s Drag Race. That friendship also saw Detox, one fateful night, as she was the lucky bidder of the infamous nightly several thousand dollar Madonna Madame X Polaroid. Congrats Detox. Vicky discusses the pressure Drag Queens feel today to participate as a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race and how the “younger generation” of Drag wannabes grow up knowing no other world. Vicky also discusses RuPaul, her history and origins and place in the Drag Community today. Vicky opens up about a career high when she was nominated in the same category as Broadway Legend Patti LuPone for her role as Audrey II in the hit West End production of Little Shop of Horrors. Vicky also shares a love of all things Real Housewives. Being a proper LA girl, she is eager to discuss real life experiences with and thoughts on Lisa Vanderpump, her restaurants and the Sur staff. Vicky also discusses her favorite Housewife Cities, one of her namesakes Miss Victoria Gunvalson, the current state of affairs in Potomac, and that one time she filmed an episode of Bravo’s “Millionaire Matchmaker” with Patti Stanger. Ep 192Gregory Zarian (on RHONJ, RHOBH, Revenge, Nip/Tuck, The OC & More!)
EGregory Zarian steps back Behind The Rope (For everyone who hasn’t heard, our Part I sit down with Gregory Zarian aired December 29th, 2020. Feel free to check it out). Picking up right where we left off, Gregory chats about his Soap Opera career which started with “Days of Our Lives” and included fan fav role Julius on “General Hospital”. Speaking of daytime TV, Gregory chats about his recent Emmy nomination, for his role on “Venice the Series”, a role that deals with bullying, something near and dear to Gregory and David, having both grown up having been bullied. On the topic of TV, we need Gregory’s hot takes from his guest star roles on many of our favorites: Nip/Tuck, Revenge, 90210, The OC, and last, but certainly not least, Westworld. We discuss what it was like on set of each of those shows and, of course, in typical Rope fashion, we need all the juicy details. Ryan Murphy, Emily VanCamp, Evan Rachel Wood, Donna Mills… we discuss it all! We also discuss his recurring role on CSI as well as his dream role in ShondaLand on the juggernaut that is Grey’s Anatomy. Of course, all roads lead to Real Housewives. With the new season of RHONJ almost upon us, we chat with Gregory about the woman he calls “Mom”, the one, the only Kathy Wakile. Gregory recounts how he met Kathy, the New York Fashion fashion show they “attended” with Gretchen Rossi and Slade Smiley (we told you we had Housewives fodder to discuss), and just how they became “family”. He also talks about some of his other east coast Jerz friends and run ins, Margaret Josephs, Dolores Catania and Danielle Staub. Heading west, let us not forget that Gregory lives in LA and travels in the same circles as the likes of Lisa Rinna, Denise Richards, Eileen Davidson. He also fills us in on the fact that his Dad, Larry Zarian, was BFFS with Robert Kardashian. Say whaaat? Way to burry the lead Gregory. A pop culture lovers dream when these two - David and Gregory - sit down to name drop it all. Ep 191RHONY's HEATHER THOMSON (Checking In!)
EHeather Thomson steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her Berkshires home, Heather is here to tell it all. Let us start at the beginning, Season Five of The Real Housewives of New York City. One day, Heather got a call from a casting agent and, well, the rest is history. Heather discusses what it was like back in the day in the groundbreaking season when the first ever major cast shake up took place seeing several OG’s be replaced by a new crop. Heather was one of these “new crop” Housewives, along with Aviva Drescher and Carole Radziwill. Heather chats about what it was like to film having never really watched the show and what it was like to be “inducted” by The Singer Stinger. Heather discusses just how far The Housewives Franchise has come from six years ago when we last saw her on our television sets as a full time cast member and how social media now plays a huge role, for better or worse, in the show and the drama that goes along with being a Real Housewife. Heather discusses some of the most iconic moments that took place during her tenure on RHONY such as “Take a Xanax”, “Be Cool, Don’t Be All Uncool”, and that infamous Le Cirque Leg Toss. We touch upon Heather’s final season as a cast member, the introduction of one Dorinda Medley and the return of one Bethenny Frankel. Heather opens up about how the presence of Bethenny Frankel on set changed the mood and vibe and how the women really reacted behind the scenes to her return. Speaking of Bethenny Frankel, Heather discusses her thoughts on the on-line “hate” Bethenny has received from having certain guests on her Podcast and the advice she has for Bethenny who, maybe, does “know it all”. Heather is happy to discuss her stellar new Podcast, “In My Heart”, no really, it is great, check it out and let's us know the last time she spoke to Diddy and the rest of the Bad Boy Fam. Finally, we discuss Heather’s much publicized lunch with Luann de Lesseps and Ramona Singer and Eboni Williams’ cryptic Instagram post to “meet” your RHONY Season 13 Cast, which happen to include a picture of Heather. Yes, we got to the bottom of that and will Heather be holding an apple when RHONY Season 13 premieres later this year. Ep 190Laguna Beach's Alex Murrel (on Laguna Beach, The Hills, RHOC, & Dating Nick Carter) - Part I
ELaguna Beach’s Alex Murrel Johnson, otherwise know as Alex M, Steps Behind The Rope. Yup, Laguna Beach. One of the granddaddy’s of them all, or as we like to say, one of the best reality shows to ever exist. Alex explains what it was like to be a student at Laguna Beach High School when MTV came knocking on its door with the concept for a reality show that followed the lives, and interrelationships, of some of Orange County’s more “interesting” students. We discuss the casting process, the reactions from students who were “left out”, the reaction from the school’s administration and what Alex’s parents thought about their daughter joining the cast. Alex explains what it was like to “film” with very few reality shows, other than shows like The Real World, existing at the time. She also discusses how she felt with her “bit*h” edit once she watched the show back as the season aired. Alex also discusses what it was like to gain instant fame overnight and how life changed once that fame, and money, started to roll in. Of course, we also discuss her Laguna Beach colleagues Lauren Conrad, Jason Wahler, Stephen Colletti and Kristin Cavallari. We discuss what our fav Laguna Beach students were like way back when, and the status of each of these relationships today. Alex discusses what life was like once her time on the show ended and she moved to LA, where she initially spent a lot of time hanging out in the clubs with other friends, including some of our favorite Hill’s cast members, Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag, Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt. During her time in Los Angeles she also partied with Celebs like Paris Hilton and Aaron Carter. Speaking of Aaron Carter, she briefly dated Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. Say whaaaat? Being a fan of Reality TV herself, Alex & David discuss just how much reality TV has changed since the early days of MTV. Finally, we answer the age old question, just how “real” was Laguna Beach / The Hills. Ep 186Caprice Bourret (Ladies of London)
ELadies of London’s Caprice Bourret steps Behind The Rope. Calling from her closet, no really she is in her expansive, white closet, from across the pond, Caprice is here to tell it all. Originally from California, Caprice moved to London when she was in her early 20s. As an aspiring model, she deemed London a good place to launch her career. Within six months of arriving, she was on the cover of every UK magazine, newspaper and so on. 350 magazine covers to be exact, and counting. Even though it all happened so fast and Caprice skyrocketed to the top of the modeling world, she always knew it could be a a flash in the pan, and thus started By Caprice Home Products. Smart Biscuit. When her agents didn’t think she was right to play Maureen in Rent, she queued in line like everyone else and proved them all wrong, landing the part to rave reviews once the show opened in the West End. Ok thats all fine, sweet and good, but lets get to it - LADIES - OF LONDON!!!!! Caprice explains how he show was originally supposed to be a sociological study in the assimilations of Americans living abroad in London and not a dramatic “housewives type” show. Well that isn’t exactly what happened, now is it? Not that we are complaining. Caprice discusses her time on the show, casting, filming, editing, and how the final product was not at all what she expected. We talk about her Ladies of London costars, Caroline Stanbury, Marissa Hermer, Juliet Angus, Noelle Reno, and Juliet Montagu, who she knew before the show, which friendships were “tested” as a result of the show, and who she keeps in touch with today. She was also on The Surreal Life and Celebrity Big Brother, two of the best reality shows, outside of Bravo of course, to ever exist. @capricebourret @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope This Episode is brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 182MDLNY's Ronita Kalra (on all things Million Dollar Listing)
EMillion Dollar Listing New York’s Ronita's Kalra Steps Behind The Rope. You know, little Luis D. Ortiz’ “assistant”, Ronita. Assistant now turned Real Estate Super Agent herself. We here Behind The Rope are obsessed with real estate so welcome Ronita, welcome. We check in with Ronita on the current state of the New York City real estate market. Do we buy or do we sell? So many questions, so little time. Ronita tells us how she went from a past career of stability and perks, at Apple nonetheless, to taking a chance on herself in the shark infested waters of New York Real Estate. She explains how she met Luis on her first day of work at Douglas Elliman (she has just accepted a new position at Compass), how getting on his team wasn't as easy as she thought and how she eventually wore Luis down and secured the coveted position of learning from one of NYC's best. We discuss their ever changing relationship, her breaking away and becoming an agent of her own, Luis' shocking decision to leave not only MDLNY, but also New York City and Real Estate in general, and the status of their relationship today. Knowing them all, we also discuss those other New York Super Agents, Fredrik Eklund, Ryan Serhant, Steve Gold and Tyler Whitman. We discuss the lack of women on the franchise, the important role of Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles’ Tracy Tutor, and how MDLNY is, in fact, casting a female for the new upcoming season (any spoilers Ronnie on who that may be? Hmm). Being a huge BravoHolic herself, we talk about some of her favorites, Teresa Giudice, Kyle Richards, and Bethenny Frankel. We also talk about that one time her and Luis went to dinner with Dorinda and John and that one time her and Luis went dinner with Miss Sonja Morgan. Do tell. She does. Then there was the time she ran into Tinsley at the bar at The Marmara Hotel, where Tins was living at the time. Ahh, New York. Finally we talk about those other brillant Real Estate Shows, MDLLA and Selling Sunset, the differences, similarities, and why Real Estate reality shows are a genre we will never tire of. Ep 181Gregory Zarian (on RHOBH, Male Modeling, & being a Soap Star)
EGregory Zarian steps Behind The Rope. Let us start at the beginning. Born and raised in California, Gregory chats what life was like growing up with a Twin Brother and a Dad as Mayor. That would be anything but dull. Ok, let us fast forward to Gregory’s young adult life. One day, while working at a Nordstrom Department Store, he was asked if he ever wanted to be an actor. He said sure and soon thereafter found himself on the set of "Days of Our Lives”, one of the classic and longest running Soap Operas of our time. Of course, all good things must come to an end and, in this case, that includes Gregory’s role on “Days”. With that role over and done, he was scouted and sent to model internationally in Paris, Milan and Germany for a few years. We could think of a worse way to spend a few years. Eventually modeling brought him back to the states and an unexpected return to Soap Life, this time as fan fav “Julius” on “General Hospital”. In some instances, “fan fav” was an understatement. Gregory and David discuss the rabid fan base General Hospital has and how, in many ways, the level of commitment is similar to that of Housewives Fans. Hey, you didn’t think we were going to have a whole episode without any Real Housewives talk, did you? Ep 180RHOP's Wendy Osefo - (Reflects Back on Freshman Season / Looks Ahead To Season Six)
EWendy Osefo, fresh off her Freshman season on The Real Housewives of Potomac, steps Behind The Rope. Contract in hand for Season Six, Wendy is here to reflect back upon her just finished Freshman Season and look ahead as to what is to come for The Real Housewives of Potomac Next Season - Season Six. That reunion! Can we talk? What a season it has been for RHOP!!! Where to begin? After a brief chat with Wendy about her Nigerian background, many degrees, yes we all know she is super smart, family life with Eddie and the boys and what originally brought her to the DMV area, we get right into what ya all are here to chat about. Piping’ hot tea from this past season of RHOP. Wendy discusses why she originally got involved with the show, potential reservations in joining, the realities of filming versus her perceived expeditions, and just what she knew and didn’t know joining an already established cast in the Fifth Season of a hit Bravo Housewives show. Of course, we also discuss the physical altercation between Candiace Dillard and Monique Samuels heard and seen around the world answering questions such as what was going through Wendy’s mind before, during and after, was she scared, could she believe what she was seeing, did she think this was “normal” Housewives’ behavior and did she think of resigning considering this was “not what she signed up for”. Wendy also dishes with us on her other cast mates Gizelle Bryant, Robyn Dixon, Ashley Darby, and last, but certainly not least, Karen Huger. Speaking of The Grand Dame, Wendy chats with us about Karen’s dislike of her and the real reasons why she thinks Karen does not like her - it is not what we see or hear at the reunion. Looking ahead to Season Six, Wendy and David discuss Monique and Candiace, both of whom have contracts in hand, and how they feel next season should, and most probably will, differ from this season past. (Monique Samuels has just announced that despite being offered a contract, she has resigned from RHOP after appearing on the show for four years). Finally, Wendy asks David, who she calls a "Housewives Aficionado”, for advice on Seasons to come to which, of course, he gives his no holds bar answers. An episode, not to be missed. @wendyosefo @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope This Episode is brought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope This episode is brought to you by HelloFresh https://www.HelloFresh.com/10velvet (Use code 10velvet for 10 FREE meals, including free shipping.) Ep 179Sarah Fraser (on Erika Jayne, RHOP, RHOBH, RHONY, Justin Bieber, & Ashlee Simpson)
ESarah Fraser from The Sarah Fraser Show Podcast steps Behind The Rope. With her background in radio, it is no wonder Howard Stern and Robin Quivers are her idols. David rapidly agrees and a discussion ensues. Sarah shares all of the guests she has interviewed during her radio career such as Justin Bieber, Rhianna and Ashlee Simpson. Who was naughty and who was nice? Sarah tells all and the list is not at all what one would expect! There was also that one time she almost slept with our buddy Constantine Maroulis (Check out our explosive Two Part Sit Down with Constantine on August 17th, 2020 on Behind The Velvet Rope). Sarah is fascinated by the the fact that David used to work for Martha Stewart and he tells all. Kinda. Living in the DMV area, Sarah is close to all our fav Real Housewives of Potomac. She even had a falling out with Ashley Darby last year after having Candiace Dillard on her Podcast. Fear not, all is well now, but Sarah gives us a play by play of that falling out and road to recovery. She has also filmed certain RHOP episodes such as Monique Samuels’ Live Podcast Tour and Sarah is happy to take us Behind The Rope of that filming. Speaking of Monique Samuels, Sarah and David debate whether she will have a job after this season concludes due to her physical altercation with Candiace. Sarah also discussed why Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is her favorite of the franchise and why Real Housewives of New York City is her least. We also discuss The Real Housewives of DC, how it is difficult to shoot any reality show in political DC and how Rob Lowe almost had a DC based reality show. Finally, Sarah and David bond over being Podcast Hosts, discuss how far the medium has come and what is next up for both of them. Ep 178Peaches Christ (on Drag Race, RuPaul, & Being a Drag Legend!) - Part I
EPeaches Christ steps Behind The Rope. Legendary Drag Performer, Peaches Christ, that is. Born Joshua Grannell, Peaches takes us back to the beginning and what it was like growing up in a suburban Maryland town with a love of all things “alternative” - Horror Films, The Macabre, John Waters, Depeche Mode and The Pet Shop Boys, to name a few. That “alternative” also came with an early Queer Identity, which Peaches combined with her love of film, to enter film school. It was during her senior thesis at this film school that Peaches Christ was born. After film school, Peaches ultimately settled in San Francisco and voila her famed Midnight Mass live movie / drag/ musical extravaganza began. It shortly thereafter became a thing, a big thing, attracting the likes of RuPaul, The Scissor Sisters’ Ana Matronic, Elvira, and even John Waters himself. Speaking of RuPaul, we discuss that one time RuPaul basically announced he was starting a little show called “Drag Race” at one of Peaches’ Midnight Mass live events. Peaches discusses Drag Race and RuPaul, how far both have come from just starting out to this worldwide, for lack of a better word, “mainstream” part of Pop Culture! What about Showgirls, the sh*tstorm cult classic of a movie that was one of Peaches’ main inspirations for the Midnight Mass Movie Extravaganza? Do not worry, we have not forgotten. That is Part II. Ep 177Candiace Dillard (RHOP - Reflects Back on Just Finished Season) - Part II
ECandiace Dillard Bassett steps back Behind The Rope (Part I of our sit down with Candiace aired last Monday Dec 14th, 2020 and has managed to make quite the splash!! Check it out). Hot off the most explosive and shocking season in The Real Housewives of Potomac history, and last night’s out of control reunion, Candiace is here to put closure to THE central storyline of the season and move on from the physical altercation with Monique Samuels, seen around the world. We pick up right where we left off, with Candiace opening up about the event and what was going through her mind before, during and after the event. We discuss the outcry of opinions and in the media, the Bravo blogs and social media and what it was like to live through everyone having an opinion on one of the most traumatic events to ever happen in her life. Of course, we address her lawsuit against Monique Samuels, Monique’s countersuit and what went on off camera to result in both suits being dismissed by the courts. Breaking the fourth wall, we discuss Bravo’s involvement, what, if anything, could have been done differently and what measures can or should be taken to prevent something like this from happening again in the BravoVerse.Candiace discusses the support she felt from cast mates Gizelle Bryant, Robyn Dixon and Wendy Osefo throughout this very tough season for her. She also discuss her, more complicated, “relationships” with Karen Huger and Ashley Darby and the status of those friendships today. Candiace answers many of the “big questions” such as, “are you really not going to return to RHOP if Monique is not let go” and “would you have signed up for the show several years knowing this was coming” and “has the good really outweighed the bad”. We discuss how this may be one of Candiace’s last long form interviews on the subject and how, with the reunion over, it is time for closure. On that note, a lighter note, we discuss Candiace the Singer / Songwriter (album coming soon, fingers crossed tour too, and will she one day be performing her hits in the WWHL Clubhouse?), Candiace the Actress (starting alongside Tia Mowry in “Family Reunion” on Netflix and “Christmas Lottery” on BET) and Candiace the entrepreneur (Prima Hair Collection is alive and well). Ep 176David Cook - American Idol
EAmerican Idol Season Seven Winner David Cook steps Behind The Rope. David takes us back to the beginning of his Idol journey explaining why he chose to audition and what the audition process was like. That audition process went well and soon he found himself one of many many many contestants on Season Seven of American Idol. David takes us inside the range of emotions felt each week as others were eliminated and he found himself still standing at the end. The very end. He won, that is. Of course, we needed all of our questions answered about judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. We also needed all of our questions answered about Guest Judges Mariah Carey and Dolly Parton. David opens up about the “Mom Vote” and what it as like being a “cougar magnet” back in his Idol days. Speaking of idol we do a deep dive into both Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and Reality Singing Competitions answering the age old question, “worth it or not?”. Ep 175Lady Bunny (On Friend RuPaul, Ellen DeGeneres, Drag Race, NYC, Wigstock) - Part I
ELady Bunny Steps Behind The Rope. Yes, THAT Lady Bunny. Drag Queen Extraordinaire, NYC Nightlife Legend, Friend to RuPaul, Lady Bunny. From her humble beginnings in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to her early days of Drag alongside RuPaul in Atlanta, Georgia, to her arrival on the New York City Club scene in the 1980s, Lady Bunny is here to tell it all. Lady Bunny is an Icon of a Drag Queen, NYC Nightclub DJ, Recording Artist, Actor and so much more. What has Bunny not done? Lady Bunny discusses what the NYC “Club Kid” scene was like back in the day and how that scene was rocked when infamous Club Kid Michael Alig, with the help of his roommate, high on drugs, killed fellow Club Kid “Angel” Melendez and disposed of the body in the east river after bragging about the murder for days to anyone that would listen. Bunny discusses how that scene has changed throughout the years and what NYC nightlife looks like today. Lady Bunny is also happy discuss BFF RuPaul. Bunny discusses the evolution of both her and RuPaul’s career from the early days to present and how both have come, well, very far, to say the least. Bunny describes what RuPaul is like off camera and how the man behind the public persona is a very different being. What? Do tell. Bunny does. Bunny discusses the RuPaul we see on our TV sets on Drag Race every week is not necessarily Bunny's friend RuPaul or the man she knows in real life. Lady Bunny also opens up about how challenging RuPaul’s “job” of mentor to up and coming Baby Drag’s can be. Finally, we discuss how, when, where and why Lady Bunny founded the world renowned Wigstock, the juggernaut that it has become, the several blockbuster films it has spawned, and the involvement of “A” list celebrities such as Neil Patrick Harris. Ep 174Below Deck's Sustainable Shane (on this Season, his departure, recent WWHL Appearance, Kate Chastain, Andy Cohen & Sustainability!)
EBelow Deck’s Sustainable Shane Coopersmith steps Behind The Rope. Current Season Eight Deckhand, that is. Or should we say just terminated Season Eight Deckhand. No shade, we loved our chat with Shane. Those are just the facts. Shane chats about how he was cast, his self admitted lack of real world yachting industry experience, and being thrown on board, almost literally, with no prior training by Bravo to be a part of this Season Eight of Below Deck. Shane chats about the challenges of the actual job he was hired to do with no real world experience versus the challenges of the ever present Bravo cameras to make a good TV show. He chats about how he planned to use the Below Deck platform to spread the word about sustainability, he is “Sustainable Shane” after all, and how he feels about the fact that the majority of sustainable footage filmed, paper straws aside, ended up on the cutting room floor. Speaking about Below Deck footage, Shane explains the truth about the several scenes the audience saw which led to his termination and details what we did not see as viewers surrounding those “heavily edited” scenes. Of course, we address his recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live (WWHL) where he decided to chat about sustainability rather than answer all of Andy Cohen’s questions surrounding current season Below Deck Drama. Shane explains what was going through his mind during this appearance and what happened off air during comercial breaks. Finally, Shane responds to both Kate Chastain and Andy Cohen’s comments earlier this week regarding this WWHL appearance and their perception of just how real is his commitment to the growing problem of sustainability in today’s society. Of course, we chat about relationships with current cast members Elizabeth, James, Eddie, Francesca, Ash, Izzy, Rachel and last, but certainly not least, Captain Lee. @sustainable.shane @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Ep 173Peggy Zabakolas (on Million Dollar Beach House, Million Dollar Listing NY & RHONY)
EPeggy Zabakolas, from Netflix’s Million Dollar Beach House, steps Behind The Rope. First things first, Peggy fills us in on all things Real Estate in both The Hamptons and New York City - the current state of the market, where you can get the best deals, and what are her favorite parts of each location. Let us start at the beginning. Peggy began working at Nest Seekers, while still in Law School, for a broker by the name of Ryan Serhant. You may have heard of him. Her first day on the job was the Premier Party for Season One, Episode One of Million Dollar Listing New York. Peggy discusses what it was like to work for Ryan back in the day, what it was like to film Million Dollar Listing New York, and what she thinks of Ryan’s growth and success throughout the years as a result of the show. Peggy also knows and discusses those other MDLNY agents Fredrik Eklund, Steve Gold and Luis D. Ortiz. Peggy explains how she is one of the only brokers to split her time between New York City and The Hamptons and how that led to her being cast as one of the five main agents on Million Dollar Beach House. We talk about how she was cast, what the filming process was like and how she felt she was portrayed once she watched the series back on Netflix. We also talk about her colleagues and costars Michael, JB, Noel and Jimmy and what the status of each of those relationships is like today. Peggy opens up about her motivations for joining the cast of Million Dollar Beach House, the biggest misconception about her from the show, how life changed overnight as a result of the show, how the show has helped her booming Real Estate career and what she hopes to further gain as a result of the show's success. Of course, we cannot help but compare Million Dollar Beach House to its left coast compadre, Selling Sunset. We discuss that show as well as her other Reality TV love, The Real Housewives. Yes The Hamptons is a small place. She has run into / seen LuAnn deLesseps, Bethenny Frankel, Ramona Singer. Of course, we discuss. Ep 172Candiace Dillard (RHOP - Reflects Back on Just Finished Season) - Part I
ECandiace Dillard Bassett steps Behind The Rope. What a season she has just had on The Real Housewives of Potomac. Where to begin? We leave no stone left unturned in our discussion with Candiace regarding the physical altercation with Monique Samuels, which was THE central storyline seen this past season on RHOP. We go behind the cameras to discuss what was going through Candiace’s mind before, during and after the “hair drag” watched around the world. We discuss the emotions associated with the event, there are a wide range, and what the atmosphere was like on the set of RHOP for the rest of the season once this occurred. Candiace discusses the RHOP reunion, what we have already seen and can expect to see over the remaining weeks, and the closure she felt, once it was over, from the most drama filled season in the history of RHOP. Breaking the fourth wall, we discuss Bravo’s involvement, what, if anything, could have been done differently and what measures can or should be taken tp prevent something like this from happening again in the BravoVerse. As Candiace reflects back, we discuss how she feels now that she is on the other side of the season and what we can expect as the RHOP Reunion forges on. We also get a rare look into Candiace’s life growing up in the ATL, being a “Pageant Girl”, her current pursuit of her MBA at Howard University, and meeting Chris Bassett. Finally, being a fellow Pop Culture and TV junkie, (yes reality is included and yes she watched RHOP before being on it) Candiace reveals her love of all things Shonda Rhimes and bonds with David over Scandal, one of the best TV shows to ever exist. Kids, we are just getting started. Ep 171The Voice's Ryan Gallagher (Team Kelly Clarskson)
EThe Voice’s Ryan Gallagher steps Behind The Rope. Ryan is having a major moment right now having wowed the judges with a leave them speechless audition on the top NBC hit show, “The Voice”. An audition which had judges Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton turning around their chairs to see the man behind the soulful operatic voice. The man is Ryan Gallagher, a classically trained vocalist who got his start in the music industry singing backup for world renowned singer Josh Groban. Speaking of music icons, Ryan has also shared the stage with the likes of Carrie Underwood and Michael Bolton. Of course, we needed to hear about that they are really like. We also needed to hear all about the behind the scenes inner workings of “The Voice” and real truths about their famed judges Kelly Clarkson, whose team he ultimately ended up on (good choice, Ryan!), Blake Shelton, John Legend and last, but certainly not least, Gwen Stefani. We also needed to hear all about the filing process, eliminations and guest judges such as Usher. If you think you recognize Ryan’s name it could be because he was also a contestant on “American Idol” in the past. It could also be because he was a cast member on the hit MTV show, “Ex On The Beach”. We discuss reality TV with Ryan, his current place in “The Voice” competition and what would happen, as we get down to the final weeks, if he really won. Ep 170Comedian Judy Gold (on Joan Rivers, Madonna, Cancel Culture, NYC and Much More!)
EJudy Gold steps Behind The Rope. Comedic legend, one of the funniest women, hell one of the funniest people we know here Behind The Velvet Rope, Judy F’ing Gold! Originally from New Jersey (we knew we liked her for a reason), Judy checks in from her house in Provincetown, Massachusetts where she is quarantining with her wife Elysa and fur baby. Missing New York City dearly, Judy and David discuss how New York has changed over the past few months, what they love about the City and why it will always, ultimately, be home. Judy and David also bond over both being bullied in High School and how that has helped shape them into the funny successful people they are today. Well, Judy is, at the very least! Judy takes us back to the beginning, what life was like growing up a tall gay woman in a suburban town and where she found and finds comedic inspiration, her mom, politics, the LGBTQIA community. Judy confides that she still feels luck to be able to ride the subway, pre covid, downtown from her Upper West Side home with the same notepad she used when she was starting out to perform gigs. She loves comedy and she loves her job. All of this is discussed in Judy’s new book, “Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble”. Judy also discusses the origins, evolution and current state of comedy in this very same book. If you couldn’t tell from the name, the book is a product of “Cancel Culture” and the over the top censorship that we all seem to be facing today. We had to ask Judy about her time as Emmy Award Winning Writer and Producer of the Rosie O’Donnell show. We discuss what working with Rosie was like and what it was like to be an out gay woman back “in the day” before it was en vogue. Of course, we needed all the details about that time Madonna was on the Rosie show, right after Lourdes was born, and held Judy’s very own son Henry pretending it was Lourdes. Confused? Just listen, it really is a funny story. Finally, we discuss Judy’s Number One Comedic Inspiration, Miss Joan Rivers, the Icon herself. We bond over Melissa Rivers’ recent appearance on “Behind The Velvet Rope” and discuss how Joan would handle “Cancel Culture” and think of the world we are living in today. Get ready to laugh people. Ep 169Miz Cracker (on being Drag Race All Stars Runner Up, Season 10 Drag Race, RuPaul, Her Comedy and So Much More)
EMiz Cracker steps Behind The Rope. Drag Race Season 10 Contestant and Runner Up (damn you Shea Couleé. We kid, we kid) for All Stars Season 5, Miz Cracker is here to dish, schmooze and share. Both being New Yorkers, David and Cracker bond over New York City nightlife, food and people. Falling into drag though a chance meeting with Drag Mother, Bob The Drag Queen, Miz Cracker shares her early beginnings in drag - the good, the bad, the other. Her early beginnings, just to be clear, were at a time before Drag Race was the “mainstream” juggernaut that it is today. She discusses her own involvement in Drag Race - how she were cast, why she was not ready for the show prior to Season 10, what filming was like, the other queens, the involvement of RuPaul, her elimination in Season 10 and ultimate placement as Runner Up in All Stars Season Five. On a larger note, Miz Cracker shares her thoughts on how Drag Race has changed the industry, the business side of drag, and how she has morphed from a Baby Drag Queen to the Woman we see before us here today. We discuss those Drag Competitions, the true difficulty of Drag Race, and the Power of TV and being one of "RuPaul’s Girls”. Miz Cracker opens up about how she has changed since Drag Race and has dealt with being a Queen in the public eye. Miz Cracker, as humble as she is, has been one busy queen since Drag Race Season 5 ended - world tours with her one woman shows, booming YouTube channel, People’s Choice Awards “Competition. What hasn’t Miz Cracker done? She is not slowing down anytime soon. Miz Cracker discusses her brilliant “She’s A Woman” Podcast, her recent appearance on Hulu’s original new series “Eater’s Guide To The World”, a food travel show hosted by Maya Rudolph, and her preparations for a blockbuster 2021 Comedy Tour, when the world opens, “She’s A Woman”. Ep 168Julie Goldman & Brandy Howard (The People's Couch) on Pump Rules, Housewives & More! - Part I
EJulie Goldman and Brandy Howard from Bravo’s "The People’s Couch" step Behind The Rope. Julie and Brandy actually have a podcast of their own, Dumb Gay Politics. It brings their own brand of humor to the political world for political beginners who don’t know too much. They talk about political figures as if they were Real Housewives. Sounds perfect to us. After bonding over being fellow Podcast Hosts, we get into how Julie and Brandy met, on a Rosie O’Donnell Gay Cruise. Well thats not too stereotypical, is it? Cheyenne Jackson makes a guest appearance. Unfortunately, the next Rosie cruise they took together didn’t end well. Brandy ended up getting kicked off the ship for reasons which we cannot put into writing (listen in!). Julie, Brandy and David bond over their love of Big Brother and all things Julie Chen. We also discuss their comedic background, which involves Julie’s guest appearance on Happy Endings! Of course, the conversation quickly turns to all things Housewives. Julie and Brandy met The Real Housewives of Miami’s Lea Black as a result of being on The People’s Couch. This meeting resulted in a friendship, a friendship which includes going to her parties when she is in town at her LA House. One of those parties was attended by Flipping Out’s Jeff Lewis, Gage Edward, and Jenni Pulos. Another Lea Black party they attended was also attended by RHOC’s Kelly Dodd. Yes they heard a lot of “off the record” talk from the Flipping Out stars, as well as from Lea Black and Kelly Dodd. Oh really, do tell? They do. Julie and Brandi discuss how they got cast on “The People’s Couch”, what the interview process was like, and how they reacted once they realized the network for the People’s Couch was actually Bravo. Hint, F’ing excited. Finally, we discuss their People’s Couch cast mate, Miss Destiny Rose from Shahs of Sunset and their everyday obsession with Reza and MJ. @mrjuliegoldman @peeweethepeoplescouch @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by Duke Cannon https://www.dukecannon.com available in the men’s grooming section of Target Brought to you by Better Help https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 167Below Deck's Bruno Duarte (on Kate Chastain, Captain Lee & The New Season) - Part I
EBelow Deck’s Bruno Duarte steps Behind The Rope. Bruno is here to - TELL - IT - ALL! Checking in from the home he shares with his Fiancé in France, Bruno wastes no time in telling us EXACLY what filming with Below Deck vets Kate Chastain and Captain Lee was like during Season Five of the hit Bravo TV Show. Hint, it isn’t too good. Holding nothing back and being completely honest, Bruno gives us a play by play of specific situations where he was not treated so kindly by both on camera as well as when the cameras weren’t rolling. He provides several examples which, quite frankly, left us completely agape and speechless. Speechless, which does not happen too often here Behind The Rope. Bruno explains how The Real World of Yachting differs from what we see on Below Deck each week as the drama plays out and the real perception of Below Deck, Captains Lee and Sandy, Kate Chastain and Hannah Ferrier in the actual working yachting industry. He also discussed “producer involvement” in filming the show and just how “real” the situations we see are versus what is contrived to make “good television”. On a lighter note, being from Portugal and having lived there most of his life, we HAD to ask what it was like when Queen Madonna decided to take up residence there and turn the country upside down. OMG. Ep 166Vicky Vox (On Kelly Osbourne's Birthday Bash, Miley Cyrus & Filming with Brandi Glanville) - Part I
EVicky Vox steps Behind The Rope. She barely made it, just in from Kelly Osborne’s Birthday Party and all. A little hungover, it is ok we do not judge, Vicky is here to Spill The Tea on just what went down at Miss O’s big shin dig. Well, what she can remember of it, that is, after all of those whiskeys. One guest she does remember well? Dorothy Wang of famed E Reality Show, Rich Kids of Beverly Hills. Vicky even read Dorothy’s cards. Do tell. Vicky does. Vicky also tells us about how she became friends with Kelly Osbourne way back when while working in Drag at a Los Angeles club and what it is like to hang out with Kelly and the rest of the Osbourne family Ozzy, Sharon and Jack. It was at this same LA Club that Vicky has stories about Miley Cyrus, Leo DiCaprio, and Eddie Murphy, all of whom were in regular attendance. Eventually Vicky got fired from this famed club thanks to Evan Ross. Oh Evan! Of course, we also had to ask about that one time she appeared on the short lived “My Kitchen Rules” show with Kelly Osbourne and Brandi Glanville and, let us just say, things did not exactly go smoothly. Would you expect anything less from Miss Brandi Glanville? Wait, weren’t we supposed to talk to Vicky about Drag and her stellar "Doing Great" Podcast? Ok that will have to wait for another time. Ep 165Lynne Curtin (The Real Housewives of Orange County)
EThe Real Housewives of Orange County's Lynne Curtain Steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from beautiful and sunny Orange Country, Lynne is here for some fun. Some fun and to tell it all. Let us start at the beginning. Lynne takes us back to when she was first cast to step behind the gates of Coto de Caza in Season Four of the hit Bravo show. Lynne walks us through how she was cast on RHOC, who she knew before being cast and some of the story lines we saw regarding her life as they played out on national television. We also discuss how Lynne handled her newfound fame and the ramifications it had on her personal life. We discuss how The Real Housewives of Orange Country has changed since the early days and how reality tv, in general, is a whole new landscape in the modern age. Of course we discuss the status of Lynne's current relationships with other OC staples such as Vicki Gunvalson, Tamra Judge, Jeana Keough, Gretchen Rossi, Lydia McLaughlin, Emily Simpson, Heather Dubrow, Lizzie Rovsek, and the Peggys Sulahian and Tanous. We also talk about the times she has crossed paths with Kyle Richards, Lisa Vanderpump and Stephanie Hollman. It is the OC after all, so we had to get Lynne’s takes on her “friendships” with Paul Nassif and Terry Dubrow. We couldn’t resist asking for #tea when we learned that her daughters knew some of the cast of Laguna Beach. It really is a small world. We discuss the departure of Vicki and Tamra and the current casting choices. Finally, no chat with Lynne Curtin would ever be complete without a discussion of her iconic, classic, one of a kind "Lynne Curtin Cuffs". Grab your oranges and kick back for a fun filled episode with the one and only Lynne Curtain. @lynnecurtindesigns_ @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope This episode is brought to you by Duke Cannon. Ep 164RYAN CABRERA - (on his Music, Ashlee Simpson, Audrina Patridge, The Hills, Avril Lavigne, New Fiancé)
ERyan Cabrera steps Behind The Rope. Yes, THAT Ryan Cabrera. Brilliant famed musician, singer, songwriter whose debut album “Take It All Away” spawned the Top 15 mega hit “On The Way Down”, a song forever stuck in our minds, in a good way! Let us start at the beginning. Ryan was discovered by Jessica and Ashlee Simpson’s Dad, Joe Simpson, while playing an acoustic show in Dallas. Two days later he was living in Los Angeles in the Simpson Household. With a room next to Ashlee’s, the two became fast and good friends, a friendship that later blossomed into a romance after Ashlee appeared in his video. That romance was documented, in part, on the hit MTV Reality show, "The Ashlee Simpson Show". Ryan discusses what it was like to film that show with Ashlee, how it helped catapult him into the public eye, and the effect that had on his music sales. Speaking of hit MTV Reality Shows, we discuss friend Jessica Simpson’s Reality Show with then husband Nick Lachey, “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” - the fact that at the time it was one of THE biggest reality shows ever to date, how “real” the show was, Jessica’s Viral “Chicken of The Sea Moment”, and Nick and Jessica’s relationship. Ryan also opens up about Jessica’s Billion Dollar Empire, the misperception of her as a “Dumb Blond”, and some of the many revelations in her earlier this year released Autobiography “Open Book”. Ryan also chats with us about then Girlfriend Ashlee Simpson’s viral SNL appearance, how that almost side railed the trajectory of her career, and what Ashlee really thought about the fallout from that fateful night. Having moved on to Audrina Patridge, we talk about that on-again, off-again relationship and what it was like to be back on Reality TV as the result of a relationship, this time on the super hit “The Hills” and many years later during an on-again phase, “The Hills: New Beginnings”. Then, of course, there was Avril Lavigne. All’s well that ends well, Ryan just got engaged to the love of his life, WWE Superstar Alexa Bliss. Ryan is kind enough to share all the details about how they met, got engaged, and the upcoming extravaganza. Wait, isn’t this chat supposed to be about Ryan’s music? He has a stellar new song dropping this week “Overthinking” with Superstar Indie Artist Tara Hack. Ep 163Southern Charm's Landon Clements (On Current Season!)
ESouthern Charm’s Landon Clements steps back Behind The Rope. Welcome back. There is a LOT going on this current season on Southern Charm and who better than to dish current Season Southern Charm than someone who is not only real life friends with the current cast, but someone who has been on the show herself. Enter Landon Clements. Checking in from her home in Los Angeles CA, Landon is taking a break from closing those Real Estate deals to chat about all her friends back home in Charleston, South Carolina. First we chat with Landon about who we do not see this season on Southern Charm - the max exodus of Series’ Regular Women - Cam, Naomi, Chelsea and Eliza. Landon discusses the real circumstances surrounding Cameran Eubanks’ departure and whether or not it truly had to do with those rumors Kathryn Dennis started about Cameran’s husband Jason, who has not appeared on the show. Turning our attention to newbies, we discuss Leva and Lamar, the racial diversity they brought to the show, and answer the question just how much was this racial diversity needed on a show like Southern Charm? We also discuss newbie hottie John Pringle. Landon discusses what he is like in real life, his true ties to the group and how she thinks he is doing on the show. Of course, we also discuss his interest in Austen’s girlfriend Madison LeCroy and her noted absence from John’s “in real life” Birthday party in Charleston, South Carolina that Landon attended last month during a quick trip home. Say what??? Landon also discusses Austen and Madison, their current relationship and whether they have what it takes to “go the distance”. We also discuss other new couple, Shep and Taylor, we did not see this one coming, who just visited Landon in Los Angeles for a fun weekend. Do tell. She does. Landon gives us all her predictions for Southern Charm’s most famous bachelors Craig, Austen and Shep, chats updates about Miss Patricia, and lets us know when she last spoke to Whitney and Thomas. Finally, we discuss Kathryn - her “inappropriate” use of the Monkey Emoji earlier this year which went viral, how she still has a job when the likes of Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute have been terminated, and just how all of this is going to play out before our very eyes over the next few weeks on Southern Charm. @alandonclements @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope This episode is brought to you by Duke Cannon. Ep 162Christi Lukasiak (Dance Moms)
EChristi Lukasiak steps Behind The Rope. First off, Christi fills us in on all that she has been up to see we last saw her on our TV screens on Dance Moms. David and Christi bond at how busy they have been in quarantine. Who knew. Ok let's start at the beginning. Christi lets us know that yes, she got Chloe into dance at age 2. She just called the local dance studio, spoke to a woman, yes it was Abby Lee Miller, and said, "hey, I have someone to enroll." Chloe took to it right away, it was truly organic and the rest is history. Christi gives us the behind the scenes of what the dance studio was really like before the origins of Dance Moms. We talk about why the term "stage mom" has such negative connotations and the perceived notions of that phrase versus the reality of the term. Christi opens up about the difficulties of balancing being an actual mom versus running your child's career, and how those goals often do not meet. Christi explains how her and Chloe were originally cast, how competitive it was to get cast, how she “knew” her and Chloe were gonna get the job and how she kinda just felt this show may be a huge hit. Umm, yea that is an understatement. She explains how it was to go from “regular dance class to dance class with cameras. We discuss how she felt when she first saw the show and the differences between how she was edited and what she remembered during filming. She remembers how it felt the first time she came to NYC and saw her and Chloe plastered on a Billboard in Times Square, where the girls were mobbed on the streets and everyone wanted their picture. Chloe is in college now, doing well and Christi lets us know what Chloe is up to. We also talk about those famous Dance Mom’s fans that Christi and Chloe have met throughout the years, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, Kristin Chenoweth and Millie Bobby Brown. On a more serious note, we talk about her decision to leave the show, how and why, how the show "changed" the entire cast - for better or worse, the positives and negatives of fame, and her decision to return. Finally we get into the business that Christi birthed in quarantine, Adulting 101.
