Ep 246Ep 246 - The truth about athlete funding and selection with Marilyn Okoro
ESend us Fan MailMarilyn Okoro's experience of being denied further funding to continue her athletics career really is a thing of shame. That's why Jody and David invite her onto the podcast to talk about her experience and uncover just how closed the system really is.Now a vocal advocate for athletes, Marilyn enjoyed success on the track finishing third in the 800 metres at the 2007 and 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final and bronze in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2007 World Champs. She is a holder of an Olympic bronze medal for the 4 x 400 metres relay after two teams that finished ahead of them in the 2008 Beijing Olympics were disqualified for doping and they were retrospectively handed the medal... EIGHT years later! (No prizes for guessing that one of the disqualified teams was Russia - the other was Belarussia). In this episode, Marilyn talks about her path into the sport and the issues she faced working with UK Athletics and a hierarchy who insisted she did things their way. This is a really eye-opening episode that gives you an insight into the way athletes are treated by the funding bodies who have the power to make or break careers based on sometimes quite oblique criteria.Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.Join the conversation! Ep 237Ep 237 - How to run marathons with no training with Fin Hampton

Ep 218 - Thabang Madiba on the South African trailing running scene
Send us Fan MailThabang Madiba is one inspirational guy. From a deprived township, his path into trail running wasn't exactly easy. Living no-one nears mountains, Thabang had to - and still does - cycle miles and miles to get to trail races. And then he wins them. A lot of them. Thabang is a multiple champion of South African trails and - in the predominantly white trail running community - he has dominated and became the first black athlete to represent South Africa in trail running. In this episode, Jody and David speak to Thabang about his path to trail running and the South African trail running scene. Enjoy! Send us Fan Mail“All women need to change their training plans.“ It’s a bold statement, but have you had training sessions that have just gone badly, where you’ve felt like crap and you can’t explain why or had weeks when you feel invincible? It’s likely to be because of when you were in your menstruation cycle. David, Jody and Allie speak to Renee McGregor about how the hormones women produce at different times of their cycle directly affect performance, nutritional needs and even when you should race. We find out why and how to create training plans to match your varying physiology so you can not only train smarter and banish the bad days but also use your cycle to your advantage. Ep 212 - Mimi Anderson on life post-ultrarunning
Send us Fan MailWe don't care what you've done in ultrarunning, your achievements are nothing compared with Mimi Anderson's. With a bunch of Guinness World Records to her name, Mimi has ticked off so many of the iconic ultraraces and more, including Double Badwater, Spartathlon, 6633 Ultra, JOGLE, and won a legion of fans in the process. She's known as the world's most inspirational female runner for a reason. Starting her running career at 36, Mimi jumped straight into the frying pan with the Marathon des Sables and her list of achievements quickly grew from there. Running offered Mimi so much, but the level of endurance has also caused issues and injuries which now prevents her from competing at the same level (sadly, she's turned to the Dark Side, i.e. triathlon). David talks to Mimi about her career and the impact shifting away from running is having - plus a warning for those ultrarunners who are pushing themselves to the edge. Enjoy! Ep 211 - Joe Oldendorf on crawling 12 hours to save his life
Send us Fan MailDo you have a survivor's instinct? Would you step up when the chips are down and your life was on the line? Or would you crumble into a sobbing, pathetic mess like a triathlete who lost their left shoe in transition? On this episode, the guys speak with Joe Oldendorf - a true survivor. Joe went out for 20 mile long run on a remote trail in his home of Washington State and fell and broke his leg after 12 miles. His injury was so severe he was unable to walk. Fortunately, he had his phone. Unfortunately, there was no signal. So, he crawled for 12 hours to get within phone signal range so he could call 911. 12 hours! David speaks to Joe about his experience and what kept him going for that amount of time with his ankle detached from his tibia. (Urgh!) This is properly inspiring. Enjoy! Send us Fan MailWhen you're the husband and coach for ultrarunning champ Camille Herron, you would be forgiven for thinking you're somewhat in the shadows. Talking to Jody and David, Connor also provides an insight into how he coaches Camille and why he's focused on her becoming the greatest of all time. Oh, and did we mention he's hilarious, too! Ep 208 - Tim Shieff on his quest for ultimate health and performance
Send us Fan MailTim Shieff is a freerunning champion, Ninja Warrior and former OCR competitor. But it's not necessarily his athletic achievements that always get the headlines. Tim has been on a journey through his life to find the optimal combination of nutrition and lifestyle to complement his activities - which has led him down some unconventional routes. Jody and David discuss this with him before moving onto the subject of veganism - which Tim vehemently rejects having been a prominent vegan for many years. There's actually VEGAN CUT in this episode at 1:33 if you want to skip straight to it or AVOID it completely. This is a long single episode because the guys had recording issues halfway through and Jody wasn't able to join the discussion about veganism. So there is a longer discussion after the interview. And it's not your usual bants. :) Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else. Join the conversation! Ep 199 - Rob Koehler, ex-WADA deputy director general on doping
Send us Fan MailWow, we’ve got a treat of an episode for you. For many months, Jody and David have time and again brought up the issue of doping as the subject seems to permeate every discussion of athletic achievement. Now, to separate fact from fiction, the chaps speak to former World Anti-Doping Association deputy director general Rob Koehler who offers an inside look at the issues at hand and the state of athletics today. He also explains why he feels ALL Russian athletes should be banned at the Olympics. This really is an eye-opener and worth a listen. Rob also discusses his new role as head of Global Athlete, an athletes advocacy group with the power to stand up to brands and associations where power is entrenched (you won’t believe how bad this is until you hear his examples of this happening!). Plus there’s some gibberish from the guys before the interview gets started. Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.
