Ep 169 - Coree Aussem-Woltering on running ultras in Speedos

Send us Fan MailIf you’re going to run crazy distances, what better way than to run them in style... and for Coree Aussem-Woltering, that means Speedos. After being on the dark side for a while in the world of triathlon, Coree found him home running ultras after pacing a friend and never looked back. Now a North Face athlete, he has clocked up wins and podium finishes galore but also champions the Mid West - a place traditionally looked down upon by the ultrarunning community which prefers their distances more elevation-focused. David and Jody speak to Coree to discover more. Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else. Join the conversation! Ep 167Ep 167 - Stephanie Case on training for ultras in extreme conditions

E

Send us Fan MailTraining for ultras is hard. All those long runs and hours spent on trails trying to build endurance and maintain your conditioning. Now imagine having to do that in a war zone. Instead of miles of trails you can run on, you have to train by running a km loop around a dusty compound in searing heat. Or you only have access to a treadmill in a dark, lonely gym. Or a small underground car park. Well, if that sounds grim just wait until you hear what Stephanie Case has to do to get ready for her crazy ultras. A veteran of some of the world's most infamous ultras including the Tour des Geants and Barkley Marathons. As a human rights lawyer for the UN, Stephanie has to do all her training in the most restrictive conditions, having been based in flash points such as Gaza and Afghanistan. In this episode, Jody and David speak to Stephanie about how she trains for her races in such conditions and discuss the impact of her Free To Run charity, which uses the power of running to help women and girls to overcome the harmful effects of conflict and discrimination. And it is CRAZY, what she's managed to achieve. Well worth a listen. Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else. Ep 166Ep 166 - Rob Shenton on Everest Marathon, mental health and running for North Pole for Help For Heroes

Send us Fan MailFormer Army Major Rob Shenton served for over 20 years in theatres of combat including Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. Medically discharged in 2016 with depression and PTSD, Rob found running to be a way to deal with the mental health issues he lives with. He set about challenging himself to run the hottest, highest and coldest marathons on a three-part challenge that took him to the Sahara, up Everest, and to the North Pole. And all in aid of Help For Heroes, who he credits with helping him. Rob now speaks to audiences all over the world about the impact of running and mental health, sharing his journey. In this episode, Rob reveals: Exactly how running helps him live with the aftermath of working in such extreme environments How he stumbled upon the idea of his hottest, highest and coldest challenge The painful logistics of even getting to the start of Everest Marathon (it sounds a right slog) Why you want your best friends to be Russian when you're flying in for the North Pole Marathon How he started working with Help For Heroes He also recalls the experience of sharing a tent with Jody on the 2011 Marathon des Sables (a fellow pioneer, then!) Ep 165Ep 165 - Liz McColgan on the state of British athletics, drugs cheats and coaching her daughter

Send us Fan MailLiz McColgan MBE has a distinguished history of success as middle and long-distance track athlete, becoming world champion for 10,000 metres at the 1991 World Champs, silver medallist in the 1988 Olympics and twice gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games. She also had major success on the road winning New York City, Tokyo and London Marathons. In this very special episode of BBR, David and Jody speak to Liz about her unusual route to becoming world champion, including: Why Liz decided to not have a coach and coach herself through her career Why modern athletes disadvantage themselves by narrowing their racing to just track or road How Liz trained to win her gold medals What she thinks about the state of doping in the sport compared with the 80s and 90s Exactly what it's like coaching her daughter Ailish McColgan and the challenges they face in a mother-daughter coaching team Why her son has been reluctant to follow in the (literal) footsteps of the McColgan dynasty Her take on the Caster Semenya situation In this episode, David and Jody also introduce a new sponsor. Ep 164 - Cal Major on paddleboarding the UK and post-adventure blues

Send us Fan MailCal Major is on a mission to save our seas and oceans. A one-woman force of nature, Cal is founder of Paddle Against Plastic, a campaign designed to create awareness around the problem of plastic through her adventures. And what adventures! Recently, Cal completed an epic journey paddle boarding the length of the UK from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise awareness, collect rubbish and shine a light on the problems in the mainstream press. But that's just the start of it. In this episode Allie and Jody speak to Cal not only about her adventures at sea, but also on what it takes to face up to the mental challenge before, during and after. Cal opens up about why it has taken so long to talk about her expedition and the pressure to live up to others' expectations on social media and being in the public eye. It's a great interview that gives an insight into what it's like dealing with the mental aspect of many of the huge challenges featured on the podcast. Plus, Jody and Allie catch up with news from the Arran Ultra, London Marathon and discuss some rather hot political topics in the running world right now. Enjoy! Ep 162Ep 162 - Nike's new Vaporfly NEXT%: an inside look

Send us Fan MailWarning - this episode is a full shoe geek out, thanks to David's exclusive interview with Brett Holt, vice president of Nike Running Footwear. David was at the high profile launch of Nike's follow-up racing shoe and speaks to Brett about exactly what is different and why the changes were made. Here's what you'll hear: The exact feedback Elliot Kipchoge gave Nike that led to the changes How the issues with the last version of the shoe have been addressed Why the shoe is priced at an eye-watering £239 And why, unless you're quick, you're not going to be getting your hands on this shoe... and it's all part of Nike's plan Before the interview, David is joined by Allie for general BBR chit chat shenans and then after the interview is joined by Jody to break down what was said. Yes, it is confusing but roll with it, ok? Oh, and don't forget to leave a confusing 5 star review on the Cultra podcast iTunes review page mentioning BBR. Remember, they're obliged to read out every single five star review... so make it weird. Enjoy! Ep 160Ep 160 - Jason McCardle on hosting crazy race ideas

E

Send us Fan MailSussex Trail Events has built a bit of a reputation for putting on races that well... are a bit unusual. As well as it’s roster of trail marathons (read muddy riverside marathons) and the Downslink Ultra, the company has hosted a number of one-off races most would be mad to complete including the Car Park Marathon (the value is in the name but this was originally invented by BBR, btw), The Pier Marathon - out and back up Southend's Mile long pier and a marathon which was laps around the Amex Stadium. David and Jody talk to RD Jason McCardle about what it takes to put on races as well as some of the inside goings-on between RDs. Enjoy! Ep 158 - Jerry Odlin on running clubs

Send us Fan MailThis week is a little bit special as David brings on his running club's director from Heathside, Jerry Odlin. Jerry has been there and done it in terms of running clubs and lifts the lid on what goes on behind the scenes of one of London's popular running clubs, how the make-up of running clubs has changed, the challenges faced by clubs and generally how running has changed. It's a fascinating view from Jerry and well worth a listen as BBR is on the verge of launching its own running club (if England Athletics don't boot BBR out before we've begun...) Plus, there's the usual chat beforehand. Mainly inane, rarely valuable. [LAST CHANCE] COMPETITION TIME! WIN A TRAIL RUNNING HOLIDAY FOR TWO! Ep 157 - Understanding runner's physiology with Professor Andrew Jones

Send us Fan MailWhat Andrew Jones doesn't know about the human body and running isn't worth knowing. No other person knows the capability and capacity of Paula Radcliffe in her prime. Andy supervised the measurement and monitoring of Radcliffe's running efficiency and aerobic capacity for more than a decade and knows in detail what makes the difference.Andy has also been at the forefront of British sport for decades having consulted UK Athletics, various sporting bodies and major sporting brands such as Gatorade and Nike. And (almost most) famously, Andy is the man behind the beetroot running thing. E

Send us Fan MailIf there's a big name ultra, James Poole has most likely done it. James is also founder of the Advent Running running community and shares his experience running this. He also shares some crazy stories from his many adventures including The Ultra Gobi and a brilliant story about hallucinations. Oh AND... COMPETITION TIME! WIN A TRAIL RUNNING HOLIDAY FOR TWO! Ep 150Ep 150 - The 150th Episode

Send us Fan MailTHEY MADE IT! [Sounds of cheers, roaring crowds, champagne corks popping] The landmark of 150 episodes has been reached. They didn't know how they would do it. They didn't know if it was possible. But for all the jokes back in 2015 when the podcast started... this is it: Episode 150. For this episode, Jody and David celebrate, reminisce and reflect on what has happened to the podcast over the years since launch... ... and get a little help from some of the Do-Badders and the podcast's previous guests who record their own messages of congratulations (or in Huw Brassington's case an advert for his next speaking event! Ep 147Ep 147 - Courtney Dauwalter on running Big's Backyard Ultra

Send us Fan MailCourtney Dauwalter has one of the most impressive running resumes having completed and won a ton of the world's best-known (and toughest) ultramarathons, including MOAB 240 outright and fastest woman at Western States 100 last year. But it's a different race that Jody and David explore with Courtney - Big's Backyard Ultra, a brutal race from the evil mind of Barklay Marathon's Laz. It's a race, not against time or distance but until the last person is standing around a 4 mile loop for as long as you can until the last person is left standing. Ep 146Ep 146 - How to come dead last in a marathon with Lisa Jackson

Send us Fan MailIn this week's episode Jody and David talk to Lisa Jackson, author, runner and member of The 100 Marathon Club - but most interestingly Lisa has made a name for herself around her ability to come last in a string of races. The discussion focuses on just how hard it is to actually come last in a race - especially when there seems to be just as much competition for the coveted last place spot - and what it's like when you're back of the pack. The chat also turns to elitism and celebrating slower runners and how to make running more inclusive.Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.Join the conversation! Ep 145Ep 145 - London City Runners

Send us Fan MailDavid and Jody speak with the founder of London City Runners, Time Navin Jones and Kerry Jones. The London City Runners one of the biggest success stories in running participation. Founder Tim Navin Jones explains how the club started from humble beginnings and has rapidly grown to become the largest free running club in London (that isn't affiliated to a retailer). But what really interests the Do-Badders is that London City Runners now have their own runners bar... er.. we mean clubhouse in Bermondsey. Tim also discusses the issues that beset the club when it tried to launch its own running England Athletics affiliated running club causing its own separatist problem (just as BBR attempts to become an affiliated club!). A little warning - there's a weird echo on David's side for about 10 minutes before the main interview. Anyway, it's a great listen. Ep 137Ep 137 - Catch-Up Episode (UTMB, Ironman, Faroe Island Ultra)

E

Send us Fan MailJody and David discuss the important issues on this Catch-up Episode. First up, Jody and David discuss the case of Sophie Power who defied the UTMB and their rules about deferment by breastfeeding her baby during the race. Incredible... and it gets a bit ranty. They then discuss how excited they are for the forthcoming episode when they're interviewing a race insurance expert. Next, they confirm the terms of Jody's 5k Ironman bet. And it gets complicated and involves an Ironman race. (Jody somehow manages to talk about the MdS, again...) David and Jody reflect on Jody's many, many past failures and likely future failures, including a Challenge Anneka reboot. We reflect on other running Facebook groups, including Parkrun laughs. David reveals his experience of running a misty half marathon on the Faroe Islands and they discuss the joy of getting lost. The episode is rounded off with a discussion about Kipchoge. Send us Fan MailJody and David once again speak to blind ultrarunner, adventurer and Stateside Do-Badder, Rhonda-Marie Parke (she got married!). She's back and talking about completing her latest challenge, the 500k Vol State Ultramarathon that runs through five states. Oh yeah, and she did it all UNGUIDED. There be much insanity in this episode. The perils of running without a guide Her race strategy for staying ahead of the pack (both coyotes and other runners) The close call at the end of the race when a HUGE storm came in How she's coping with not running because of a stress fracture Before the interview, Jody and David discuss a surprising running club and get into a discussion about running and motivation. Ep 128Ep 128 - Running 100 milers with Centurion's James Elson

In this episode, you'll discover: Why James was suitably impressed with Hellard's first ultra attempt at Country To Capital The lengths James went to in order to qualify for Badwater How the challenge of running a 100 miler has changed The funniest complaint James has ever received moment after a competitor finished The amazing lengths James went to in the early days of Centurion to organise the race The importance of volunteers in 100 milers and how volunteering at aid stations can add to your ultra training How to tell when someone's "done" on a 100 miler (and when to dust them off and kick them back out there...) How "what is possible" has changed in terms of the times of running 100 milers The competitor who has achieved an incredible 28 consecutive DNFs on Centurion events (honorary Do-Badder status right there!) Why the Autumn 100 should be your first 100 miler (if you're thinking about doing a 100 miler) Before jumping into the interview, Allie and David debrief after their live podcast broadcast at the Lovetrails Festival where the Commandment of BBR are revealed. Ep 126Ep 126 - David and Jody catch up

Send us Fan MailSometimes Jody and David find themselves without a guest. They sit and wait diligently on Skype but the guest is a no-show. (It's usually because they're realised at the last minute what the show is about and are running for the hills. Pretty fair, we reckon.) So the chaps use this time to catch-up on what's been going on in the world of BBR and general weirdness. In this episode, you'll hear about: The unbearable awfulness/greatness of running with your top off Why Jody and David can't actually remember how long they've been podcasting for Why the OCR European Champs may have been a touch too hard this year and why that's bad How Killian Jornet destroyed the Bob Graham Round (in a good and bad way) Some cycling and why it's bad (obvs) The brand new BBR Instagram account (it's ace, look it up) An explosive race David comes up with that NO-ONE will ever want to run David and Jody review some of their reviews on iTunes (they now have a new favourite one star review) PLUS this episode features perhaps the greatest STING yet right at the start (and yes, that IS Brian Blessed). Ep 125Ep 125 - How to compete in the Olympics with Andrew Steele

Send us Fan MailIt's another returnee to the Bad Boy Running podcast. After the DNAFit episode with Andrew Steele where Jody and David faced off to see who had the best genes (David won), Andrew returns to talk about his time as an Olympian. Andrew spent 12 years as an Olympic athlete competing in the 400 metres and 4x400 metre relay for Team GB and won a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games (although not *actually* at the games... he explains why). If you want an insider's view of what it's like to train for and compete in the Olympics, this is the episode for you. Ep 124Ep 124 - Charlie Webster on near-death experiences

E

Send us Fan MailThis episode is a bit of a treat... and is very different from other episodes published. In this instalment of BBR, Jody and David speak with Sky Sports presenter Charlie Webster about her epic charity bike ride two years ago through the Amazon which ended in near-disaster. Just weeks later, she was lying in a hospital bed in a coma fighting for her life as she battled malaria with her mother beside her ready to say goodbye. Seriously, this is an inspirational, shocking and kind of heart-breaking account from Charlie who doesn't pull any punches and reveals everything. (Jody and David will tell you it's their clever, disarming interview style... but don't let that fool you) Seriously, give this a listen. It's two hours of incredible stuff. Ep 122Ep 122 - Race nutrition with Renee McGregor

Send us Fan MailIn this week's episode Jody and David are talking food (or fuel) depending on how you refer to your race nutrition. And there are few people as qualified to talk about race nutrition, especially for ultras as Renee McGregor, performance dietician and author of books including Training Food and the Fast Fuel series. Hang on to your macros, as Jody and David squeeze every ounce of knowledge from Renee's brain on the subject (hint: this is one of those really practical, useful episodes that sometimes accidentally slip through the net...)
