PSP 178: Helping Anxious Kids Who Crumble Under Pressure
Anxious kids crumble under pressure for a variety of reasons. They might worry about deadlines and school work. They might worry about the social pressures of being called on or being watched. They might fear being less than perfect or being worse than others. They might have difficulties making decisions, worried about picking the wrong choice. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about why kids crumble under pressure and how to help them. Sometimes avoidance is actually a bigger issue called PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance). This is a subtype on the autistic spectrum. Currently it is not as well known in the United States. PSP 173: What to Do When Therapy isn’t Enough for a Child with Anxiety or OCD
Your child needs help, but therapy isn’t cutting it. Maybe it’s because she refuses to go or perhaps it’s because her issues are just too intense for outpatient therapy. What’s a parent supposed to do when the help isn’t helping? Outpatient therapy is where the road starts, not where it ends. Many parents don’t realize that. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Sami, a member of my AT Parenting Community to discuss her journey trying to help her daughter with OCD. She discussed the process of getting her into a PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and her experience once she was in.Sami is also a Life Coach for teen girls. She offers programs to support teens, including a few that help anxious teens. PSP 172: How to Handle the Stress of Raising a Child with Anxiety or OCD
Raising a child with anxiety or OCD should come with a warning label, “Warning: May be hazardous to your health.” Being a rock to a child that is often flailing in the sea of chaos, can be draining to even the best of us. It can wear you down, destroy your sleep and impact your mood stability. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are ways that we can maintain our health and mental stability, while still helping a less than stable child. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the quicksand many of us find ourselves in and some simple ways you can claw yourself out of it.Also, to sign up for the 3-Part Video Series: Self Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD starting on June 23rd, 2020 go to:www.bit.ly/selfcareseries4 or text ATSELFCARE to the number 44222.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxietyHelping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 171: Understanding Emetophobia, The Fear of Throwing Up with Chrissie Hodges
Parents often grapple with what may have caused their child to become so deathly afraid of throwing up. They come up with theories. Maybe it was the time she saw her cousin throw up? Or maybe it was the time she got sick in the car? Or maybe it was the time she got food poisoning? But in reality, the fear of throwing up (also known as Emetophobia) just happens.Kids who are genetically prone to anxiety or OCD are at a higher risk of developing Emetophobia. Yes, it can be triggered by an external event, but the genetic seeds are usually just waiting to sprout. That event often only triggers what was already waiting in the wings.Just think about how many times people have seen others throw up or who have had bad experiences throwing up themselves. Most of those people don’t develop a severe fear of throw up. Emetophobia is just one of many ways anxiety and OCD can manifest. So how do you help your child with Emetophobia? Often it is the opposite of what you would think.I invited Chrissie Hodges to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to discuss her life long battle with Emetophobia. Chrissie has been a powerful advocate for those suffering with OCD. She is a mental health advocate and speaker and provides OCD peer support and consultation. She was awarded the 2017 International OCD Foundation’s Advocacy Hero Award for all of her work. She is the author of Pure O: The Invisible Side of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is the Executive Director of OCD Game Changers, an international non-profit group dedicated to helping people with OCD, their families and providers. You can learn more about Chrissie, her work and OCD Game Changers on her website http://www.chrissiehodges.com And on OCD Game Changers website http://www.ocdgamechangers.com.You can order her book, Pure OCD here: https://amzn.to/2BMZRg0Also, to sign up for the 3-Part Video Series: Self Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD go to:www.bit.ly/selfcareseries4***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxietyHelping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 170: How to Help Anxious Kids Help Themselves
It is hard to watch our anxious kids suffer. It is hard to stomach their pain. It is very tempting to swoop in and protect them. To soften their fall. To protect them from feeling discomfort. But that is robbing them of the opportunity to build their skills. I find that the best way to help anxious kids is to teach them how to help themselves. But easy to say, right? But how does one do that?In this week’s podcast episode I outline some of the ways parents can start to empower their kids to help themselves. PSP 169: A Parent’s Journey Through Anxiety and Autism
Autism can be a confusing disorder because it often comes with so many other comorbid conditions. Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can show signs of anxiety, OCD and ADHD. Initially it can be hard for parents and even professionals to get an accurate diagnosis. In this month’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast segment Member Spotlight, I talk to Lynn about her struggles trying to understand her daughter’s behavior. She talks about how her daughter was given an anxiety diagnosis early on, but how she felt like something was missing. To listen click below:***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxietyHelping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 168: How to Spot OCD Symptoms in Teens
Most kids with OCD go into adulthood without a diagnosis. This means years of feeling different. Years of feeling ashamed. And years of little to no support. If parents and therapists can learn how to spot OCD symptoms in teens, we could help them save years of unnecessary pain and suffering.OCD requires a very specific therapeutic approach called Exposure Response Prevention (ERP). If a teen’s OCD symptoms are missed, they are also missing the help they so desperately need and deserve.Sadly teens with OCD who go undiagnosed have a higher likelihood of suffering from depression and ongoing symptoms. So what are the signs of OCD in teens? It’s not always an easy thing to detect. Teens with OCD have had years to develop compulsions. Many of them have gotten very good at the art of hiding these behaviors.Let’s start with what OCD is and what it isn’t.OCD is not about being a “neat freak.” Many extremely messy teens are silently suffering from OCD. OCD is not about being obsessed with organizing. Many disorganized teens can still have OCD.OCD is about having an intrusive thought, feeling, image or song stuck in one’s head and the need to do or avoid something to get some brief relief. The problem is, the more you do or avoid, the bigger the OCD grows.OCD isn’t just about germs. In fact, many people with OCD don’t worry about germs. There are many different “sub-types” or themes around OCD.The common denominator though is this: They all have an intrusive thought, feeling, image or song in their head and they all do compulsions to get some relief. PSP 167: What is Emotional Contamination OCD?
OCD can wreak havoc in any family. But one sub-type of OCD that can be particularly painful is emotional contamination OCD. Emotional contamination issues can hurt family relationships and confuse parents.Sadly most people, even mental health professionals, understand very little about how OCD can manifest. OCD isn’t just about germs and constant cleaning. OCD has many themes and sub-types. It is so important for families raising kids with OCD to educate themselves on the various ways OCD can show up. The best defense against OCD is to recognize it’s many disguises. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I discuss what emotional contamination OCD is and how it shows up in children and teens.***You also don’t want to miss Alisha’s Picky Eating Workshop Series outlining the 2-Step Process to moving your child From picky eater to healthy child. PSP 166: Moving our Kids with Anxiety or OCD from Dependency to Resiliency
We all do things for our kids. But there comes a time when we do too much. We inadvertently send a message that they are not capable of doing things for themselves. Ironically this directly impacts their ability to independently fight their anxiety or OCD.In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to move our kids from dependency to resiliency one small step at a time.***You also don’t want to miss Alisha’s Picky Eating Workshop Series outlining the 2-Step Process to moving your child From picky eater to healthy child. If your child is anxious, they are more likely to be a picky eater as well. This makes sense if you reallythink about it. Anxiety loves to scare our kids. It’s too dark. It’s too dangerous. Anxiety likes to whisperthings about food too. It’s too chewy. It’s too smelly. What if’s like to have their turn too. What if Ichoke? What if it tastes really bad?In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Alisha Grogan, an Occupational Therapistand creator of the site, Your Kid’s Table to offer us three simple ways to help our kids with picky eating. Her ideas are simple to carry out, yet highly effective. You also don’t want to miss Alisha’s Picky Eating Workshop Series outlining the 2-Step Process to movingyour child From picky eater to healthy child. PSP 164: A Parent’s Journey Handling Her Child’s Separation Anxiety
Clinical Separation Anxiety isn’t a toddler problem. In fact, symptoms often start to show up when kids are in elementary or middle school. Separation Anxiety Disorder isn’t about having a toddler follow you around. It is about having a child who experiences sheer panic when they are not by your side. It is about having a child who needs to know your whereabouts every second of every day. In this month’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast Member Spotlight segment, I interviewed Shannon, an AT Parenting Community Member and a mom to three kids. She graciously agreed to share with us her journey helping her kids with separation anxiety.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.com Sign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes: To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxiety Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 163: Three of the Most Commonly Missed Compulsions in Childhood OCD
OCD loves to hide. It loves to go undetected. We often think that compulsions are obvious behaviors, like over washing or over straightening. Things that we can see. Things we can measure. But compulsions are often so much more complicated than that. They can be subtle. They can hide in plain sight. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I reveal the three most commonly missed compulsions in childhood OCD. PSP 159: Raising Resilient Kids in a Changing World with Madeline Levine
We are living in an ever-changing world. Our kids are living in an ever-changing world. This might be a scary notion to many, especially considering what is going on in our world right now.But what if we had the capability of improving our child’s resilience? What if we could teach our kids to systematically move towards their fears instead of away from them. What if we could teach our kids how to build up their ability to be adaptable, flexible and thrive under challenging conditions. In the latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Madeline Levine on to discuss just that. She is the New York Times bestselling author of Teach Your Child Well and The Price of Privilege. In her new book, Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing World, she talks about the necessity for us to shift gears in how we approach parenting. We discussed what skills our children will need to be successful and how we, as parents, can foster those skills. To listen click here:To learn more about Madeline Levine’s work visit her website https://madelinelevine.com or view her books here on Amazon (affil links):Ready or Not: https://amzn.to/3bkMpMHThe Price of Privilege: https://amzn.to/2UejxjOTeach Your Child Well: https://amzn.to/2xi1Qqj***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCDhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxiety Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 155: An Adoptive Mom Talks About her Journey Raising a Child with Invisible Needs
Many of us fantasized what parenthood would look like way before we had children. Our ideas of parenthood might have been solidified in early childhood, as we tucked our baby doll into her toy crib. Or it may have been dreamt about the moment we knew we were about to become a parent. But for some of us, the dream and reality didn’t match. Our children had issues. Our children had fears. Our children had struggles.Janelle Molony’s idea of motherhood wasn’t what she had imagined. After entering the world of foster care to adopt her child, she was thrown into a whirlwind of issues and struggles she wasn’t anticipating. In her memoir, Un-Adoptable? Faith Beyond Foster Care, she recounts her struggles and triumphs and how ultimately, she was able to move out of the darkness and into the light.I had the pleasure of talking with Janelle on this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast. PSP 144: Surviving the Holidays with Kids Who Have Anxiety or OCD
I love the holidays. I mean LOVE them! But my three anxious kids can hit some pretty big bumps during the holiday season. In fact, most kids who have anxiety or OCD hit a few bumps during this time of year. There is the chaos. The crowds. And then there are the new foods, constant parties, scratchy clothing, lots of socializing, busy schedule and high hopes for what they’ll get. All that leaves some pretty cranky kids by early January. In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I was asked to talk about tips to help kids with anxiety or OCD survive the holidays. I hope it helps give you some ideas!***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 143: How Our Expectations and Stress Impact Our Child with Anxiety or OCD
We often think there is nothing we can do if our child doesn’t work on their anxiety or OCD. I often say, we are in the passenger seat and they are in the driver’s seat. PSP 140: Talking All About Self Care with Dr. Orlena
Does “self-care” equal “self-ish” to you? Often there is a negative connotation with the idea of focusing on yourself, especially when you have a child who is in crisis. Sadly, that is when self care is the most needed. When we are depleted, anxious or overwhelmed we are in no condition to help our kids. Believe it or not, the very first step in helping our kids with anxiety or OCD is to help ourselves. So how do you do that? Where do you start?I invited Dr. Orlena Kerek to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to talk to us all about self care! PSP 139: Did You Know it is OCD Awareness Week? What that Means for You and Your Child
I know there are a bazillion awareness weeks and months. Every cause, issue or disease has a color or a month. But I wanted to talk to you about why OCD Awareness Week is so important and how you can take part with even the smallest of gestures.OCD is one of the most misunderstood disorders. Which is sad considering it can be one of the most debilitating conditions a person can experience. Part of the reason OCD is so debilitating is due to the lack of understanding OCD. Kids are misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all.Stereotypes perpetuate shame and guilt.People remain quiet out of fear of embarrassment and labeling. So what could help with this? Knowledge. Spread the knowledge in any way you can. You can check out all the inspiring things the International OCD Foundation is doing this week to bring OCD awareness out from the shadows by clicking here.Help your child.Use this week to celebrate your child. Show them videos and pictures people are posting using the hashtag #FACEYOURFEAR and #OCDWEEK to show them how other people are being brave in support of them.Have a movie night where you make popcorn and watch the documentary Unstuck: an OCD Kids Movie.Educate yourself and others by taking my free online mini-course, Misunderstanding About Childhood OCD. PSP 137: Talking About Drugs with our Anxious Kids with Tiffany Jenkins from Juggling the Jenkins
We many think my sweet, anxious child will never do drugs. In fact, how could she? She’s afraid of her own shadow! I am right there with you. But our young, anxious kids often turn into depressed, overwhelmed teens. The last thing we want is for them to self medicate. That’s why talking about drugs when they are young is so important. There comes a time when our kids think we “don’t get it.” Our kids lean on their peers for support. They think only other 16-year-olds get their pain (as scary as that might sound). We don’t want to wait until our window of opportunity is gone! That is why I am having some hard conversations with my anxious seven and nine-year-old. Their ears are open. They have lots of questions. I am pouring information that they are filing away for a later stage of life. Kids are wide open to talk about drugs at this age, but many of us worry about doing it.This week I invited the hysterical Tiffany Jenkins from Juggling the Jenkins, to the AT Parenting Podcast. She came on my radar after many parents in my audience kept sharing her hysterical videos on Facebook and Youtube. As I dived deeper into her work, I discovered a more serious side to Tiffany. She is a recovering drug addict. She has used her fame and platform to educate others on the dangers of drugs. In her memoir, High Achiever to shares the inner workings of a person struggling to beat an addiction and all the turmoil it brings with it.In the podcast she shares her raw and real truth and with it gives parents a chance to make a difference in their children’s lives. Check out Tiffany’s Youtube channel, her Facebook page, her podcast, Take it or Leave it and her book, High Achiever. I couldn’t stop listening and binge listened to it in a few days (it’s on audible).***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 135: The Difference Between Picky Eating and Extreme Picky Eating
Dealing with extreme picky eating can be a lonely journey. Barely anyone gets it. People will tell you all sorts of things. Some to lift you up and some to tear you down, but neither wind up being helpful. He won’t starve to death You should force him to eat (as if it was just that easy!) If he was my child… (that’s never a good sentence) Aren’t all kids kind of picky? You let her eat just that?! Ugh. I could go on and on. But it brings back too many bad memories.Kids have extreme picky eating for a variety of reasons. They can have sensory issues, fears of choking, mechanical and structural issues, intrusive thoughts around food… the list can go on and on.But often, we all have one common goal between us. We want our kids to eat. We want our kids to be healthy. This week on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I have invited my friend and go-to picky eating expert, Alisha Grogan, Pediatric OT, to talk to us about the difference between typical picky eating and extreme picky eating. She also has a free workshop series out this week that runs from 9/17/19 to 9/24/19 called The 2-Step Process for Moving Your Child from Picky Eater to Healthy Child. Click here to enroll now before it goes away. She is awesome: www.bit.ly/pickyeatingworkshop19. She offered some really good insight into picky eating in this episode!***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 134: Helping Kids Who Have a Fear of Bad Guys
Hands down the number one fear I deal with as a child therapist is the fear of bad guys. It isn’t surprising. I remember being a child myself, sitting in my bed, blanket up to my neck, wondering not if, but when would I be attacked. The fear is often dealt with platitudes like:I’m right here Who is going to hurt you Nothing has ever happened to you Why do you worry so muchIn this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I explore why those platitudes aren’t helpful and what to do and say instead. To get a free PDF on 15 of some of the Most Common Reasons Why Kids are Scared to Sleep, go to: www.bit.ly/sleepfearsTo learn more about the sleep class go to: www.bit.ly/sleepclass19 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
