But in this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to get out of that mindset or at least not live in it permanently. To sign up for my FREE 3-part video series Self-Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD click here.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP 219: How to Help a Child with Both Autism and OCD

Many parents who are raising children with both Autism and OCD find themselves in a no man’s land of sorts. Professionals treating Autism don’t always understand OCD and those treating OCD don’t always understand Autism. Ugh. What a struggle. That is why talking to Dr. Rebecca Sachs is like talking to a rare unicorn. Her practice, CBT Spectrum specializes in both and her knowledge runs deep! I invited her on to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to answer the most common questions I get from parents who are navigating both these words simultaneously.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP 218: The Power of Helping Your Child’s Anxiety by Working on Your Own

Anxiety and OCD doesn’t live in a bubble, it lives in our house. As parents we have to walk the walk and talk the talk. But what does that mean? It means tapping into our own fears, regardless of whether we have anxiety or OCD ourselves. It means knowing ourselves and the human fears that come with it. It means walking towards fear and discomfort the way we ask our kids to do.In this AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode I talk about why it’s important for all parents to examine their own fears to help their kids. I also talk about how to start doing it!This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. NOCD provides online OCD therapy in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. PSP 214: Interview with Dr. Shefali | Helping Mothers Turn Pain into Power

Dr. Shefali is a prominent clinical psychologist and the New York Times best selling author of The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family. In her new book, A Radical Awakening, she talks to women abou how to take their pain and turn it into power. According to Oprah Winfrey, “The world needs to know. Trailblazing. Life-enhancing. [A Radical Awakening is] one of those books you will want to keep on your nightstand.”In my interview with Dr. Shefali I dive deeper into what it means to be a parent and mother to kids with anxiety and OCD. We talk about how we separate their pain and their journey from our own. PSP 211: Why Anxiety or OCD Therapy is Not Enough for Our Kids

Many of us think that if only we can find a qualified anxiety or OCD child therapist, all of our child’s struggles would go away.I wish that were true. I wish that was the case for the children that I have treated and for my own children. But the truth is, as parents we have a major role in how our children do. Even if they are refusing help, there are things we do that can help or hurt the situation. There are things that we need to do for ourselves as well in order to survive. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about what our role is as parents and how it can help our kids. For more ongoing support join The AT Parenting Community. PSP 210: How to Help Kids with Anxiety or OCD When They are Angry

Kids with anxiety or OCD aren’t just fearful, often they are angry. Anxiety and OCD can cause kids to rage, meltdown and talk back. It can make them dig their heels in and be oppositional. But when parents react to those behaviors in “typical” ways, they often hit a brick wall. Why? Because often anxiety and OCD is the undercurrent driving those emotions. So if you don’t address the undercurrent, you're missing a crucial piece of the puzzle. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to differentiate between developmentally typical anger vs anxiety or OCD triggered anger. I also talk about the counterintuitive approach to take when you know that the anger was caused by your child’s anxiety or OCD.Also, sign up for my FREE series called Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. Change is hard on most kids, but it can be especially hard on anxious kids. So what happens when they have to change their teacher or therapist? PSP 206: How Self-Esteem Plays a Role in Kids with Anxiety or OCD

Anxiety and OCD will often take a swing at our child’s self-esteem. It can do that with the anxious or intrusive thoughts it bombards them with. It can do that by paralyzing them with fear, as they watch their peers not struggle. It can also be present alongside anxiety or OCD. It can help pick their anxiety or OCD themes. Social anxiety, perfectionism and Moral OCD all use self-esteem in their arsenal of weapons. In this podcast, I explore how self-esteem dances with anxiety and OCD. I will highlight what areas to look into and talk about how focusing on your child’s self-esteem will in turn help their battle with anxiety and OCD.More resources on self-esteem: https://www.anxioustoddlers.com/?s=Social+anxiety&submit=***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. To join the AT Parenting Community go to: www.ATparentingcommunity.comVisit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxietyHelping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryLet me become your $5 mini-coach. PSP 205: Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Cope with Grief or Trauma

It’s hard enough to have anxiety or OCD, but what happens when your child is hit with grief or trauma? It can feel like a muddy, chaotic mess. Unfortunately life happens and so do tragedies. Our kids are not immune to life happening to them, I wish they were. Anxiety and OCD are opportunistic. It will feed off the grief and trauma by trying to grow new themes and new compulsions. Our family has suffered an unthinkable and sudden loss. My children are grieving the loss of their father. That alone would be an insurmountable feat. But they are also quietly fighting off another more subtle battle. PSP 204: Update on Tragedy that has Devastated Our Family

For those of you that aren’t aware, my husband died suddenly of a blood clot ten days after a minor Achilles surgery. The grief has been all consuming for me and my three children. I know my podcast, youtube channel, social media posts and emails have abruptly stopped almost a month ago and I didn’t have the energy to even explain why.I was touched by all the outpouring of love from around the world from those that heard about my loss. I wanted to thank everyone who reached out, mailed me cards and donated to the gofundme account that circulated FB. The love was definitely felt from all directions and was so appreciated. After he died I decided to close my practice, as my hours were only evenings and weekends, the time my kids will need me the most. My online resources, classes and AT Parenting Community membership will be my sole focus moving forward. Currently I plan on returning to my online work on April 1st. I made this video to be played at my husband’s funeral more for his co-workers than for me. Even though it is raw and vulnerable I was encouraged to share it more broadly and I decided to do so in the hopes it could impact even one more person to live a life full of love and connection. Click here to watch it:https://vimeo.com/516303126/7ee978deb7To help grieving children deal with the loss of their parent, you can donate in honor of Jimmie Daniels at https://billysplace.me. They have been a complete godsend for our family during this time.We are still grieving, so please accept my apologies for not commenting or responding if you reach out. I am going to be staying off social media until I return on April 1st.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. PSP 203: How Online Support Can Be A Game Changer for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD

There are common stories among parents raising kids with anxiety or OCD. Stories of struggling to find a well trained anxiety or OCD child therapist. Stories of feeling isolated and alone. Stories of friends, family or the school not fully getting the depths of their child’s struggles. These are stories that don’t have to continue. There is plenty of support out there. Support that can reach every corner of the globe - you just need to know where to find it.In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk with Jo, a mom from the UK, who was feeling lost and overwhelmed on how to help her daughter. She was lost until she discovered online resources that helped guide her on what to do next.To join the AT Parenting Community and super size your support and knowledge, go to www.ATparentingcommunity.com.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. PSP 202: Why Mental Health Professionals are Missing Signs of OCD and The Damage it Causes

When you get assessed by a mental health professional you assume that they would be well versed in all possible diagnoses. You assume they will identify, diagnose and treat any possible mental health struggle. Unfortunately that assumption is not only wrong, but dangerous.OCD seems to be the step-child of mental health education and training. Which is mind boggling considering, according to the International OCD Foundation, 1 out of 100 adults have OCD and 1 out of 200 children and teens do as well. Think about that for a moment. The same amount of children have OCD as Diabetes. This is not a rare mental health disorder, and yet there is this pervasive lack of training and expertise around the issue. Mental health professionals aren’t given the education in their graduate programs. They are often not taught that OCD is not just about washing hands or tapping some magical number. They often don’t realize that a person can have OCD if they have an intrusive thought that they are a bad person and they need to confess all their “bad” thoughts to those they love. They often don’t understand that a person can have OCD if they have an intrusive feeling that they might stop breathing, so they have to continually take deep breaths. Or that a person can have OCD if they have an intrusive thought that they want to harm others or themselves. That one in particular can be dire in the hands of a mental health professional who does not understand OCD.According to the International OCD Foundation (link: https://iocdf.org/professionals/training-institute/ for that statement), on average it can take someone up to 17 years from the onset of symptoms to get properly diagnosed and begin receiving effective treatment. That is unacceptable. In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk to Cameron Kleimo, a mom and therapist who has a similar story to my own. Her graduate program didn’t teach her how to spot OCD. And it wasn’t until she was stumped by her own child’s behavior that she discovered that they both had OCD.Click here to listen:To learn more about the missed signs of childhood ocd click here (insert this link https://www.anxioustoddlers.com/ocd-in-children/).If you are a mental health professional wanting more training on OCD click here (insert this link: https://iocdf.org/professionals/training-institute/)For the IOCDF Guidelines for pediatric OCD medication go to: https://kids.iocdf.org/professionals/mh/meds-for-pediatric-ocd/To take my class, How to Crush OCD go to:Www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdTo learn more about Cameron’s work visit her site:https://www.sensorymom.com/Also I’d love to invite you to sign up for my FREE 3-part video series: Self-Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. PSP 201: How to Motivate Our Kids to Work on Anxiety or OCD

One of the biggest challenges parents face when raising a child with anxiety or OCD is...motivation. How do we motivate our kids to face their fears? How do we motivate our kids to sit in discomfort? How do we motivate them to even talk about their struggles. That can feel like an uphill battle. And yet, if you don’t have buy-in, it will be like trying to drive while someone has their foot firmly on the brake. Our children’s struggles are their struggles, not ours. And only they will be able to take the necessary steps that will lead to long-term change. We can do our part by reducing our accommodations and our role in the anxiety or OCD, but the rest will be up to them.So that brings us back to motivation. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I invited Dr. Amy Jenks, an anxiety & OCD therapist in the Bay Area to chat with me about how to help parents motivate their kids to work on anxiety or OCD.Click here to listen:To learn more about Dr. Amy Jenks and her work, visit her website: https://bayareaocd.comAlso I’d love to invite you to sign up for my FREE 3-part video series: Self-Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. PSP 200: How to Tell When It’s Difficult Behavior or When It’s Anxiety or OCD

Your child is refusing to clean their room, go to bed or go to school. They are digging their heels in and it doesn’t look like they are going to budge. What are you supposed to do?Well if your child has anxiety or OCD, you might want to take an extra step and ask yourself, “Is this behavior caused by their anxiety or OCD?”Why does this matter? Does it mean you are going to give them a complete pass on both their behavior and the task at hand? Not exactly. It means you are going to approach it from a different angle. An angle that will help build your child’s skills so they can learn how to manage their anxiety or OCD. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about how to decipher if your child’s behavior is caused by their anxiety or OCD struggles. For more in-depth help on how to help your child through difficult behavior related to their struggles take my online course, How to Help Kids with Difficult Behavior Caused by Anxiety or OCD at https://atparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behavior.I’d love to invite you to sign up for my FREE 3-part video series: Self-Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. PSP 193: How to Not Pass Our Fears onto Our Kids

Our kids are emotional sponges. They soak up our happiness, but they also soak up our fears. Often when trying to help our kids with anxiety we might project our own worries onto them. Sometimes we might spread our fear throughout the house. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I dive into three main topics. First, how do we keep our fears in check during this global pandemic and societal unrest so we don’t inadvertently spread those fears to our children? Second, how can we decipher what are our fears and what are our child’s fears? Sometimes we smush the two together and reality gets blurred. Lastly, how can we respond to our kids when their anxiety makes us anxious? What can we do when sitting with our children’s anxiety creates our own?***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Let me become your $5 mini-coach. PSP 191: Should You Tell Your Child They Have Anxiety or OCD?

Many parents worry about telling their child they have anxiety or OCD. Some worry about potentially labeling their kids. Some worry that it will make their child feel different. Others worry about the stigma the child will face. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival episode, I dive deep into the pros and cons of telling your child that they have anxiety or OCD. I also explore the pros and cons of reading children’s books with various anxiety or OCD themes. Many parents worry that exposing a child to other anxiety or OCD themes, will cause them to “catch” new themes and make their struggles worse. Resources Discussed in Podcast:Unstuck: an OCD Kids Movie www.OCDKidsmovie.comPractice Being Brave: Owning my OCD: https://amzn.to/35WvfnDWhat to Do When I Worry too Much: https://amzn.to/2Jn9LbQWhat to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck: https://amzn.to/3oO9aQNOutsmarting Worry: https://amzn.to/3jNIDzvThe ACT Workbook for Teens with OCD: https://amzn.to/3ejCWYRStuff That’s Loud: https://amzn.to/3231Gj6 My Youtube channel: www.youtube.com/c/anxioustoddlers78 *** This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. Let me become your $5 mini-coach. PSP 190: When OCD isn’t a Fear But Rather a Feeling of Disgust

Unfortunately many people believe, including some mental health professionals, that in order to have OCD you must have a core fear. Sadly, many people get misdiagnosed because people are searching up, down and all around for a fear. But OCD doesn’t have to be an intrusive thought, it can also be an intrusive feeling. Many people with OCD will have an overwhelming feeling of disgust or grossness. This feeling causes so much discomfort that they will do everything in their power to avoid it. That is why they often develop compulsions and extreme avoidance. In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore how disgust and grossness play a role in OCD.To join my FREE 3-Part Video Series: Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD go to http://bit.ly/survivaltoolsforparents ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Let me become your $5 mini-coach. PSP 189: Handling the Grief that Comes with an Anxiety or OCD Diagnosis

Most of us had a fantasy of what parenting would look like. It might have involved Pinterest crafts, bake sales and play dates. It probably didn’t include hyperventilating, panic and avoidance. None of us signed up to parent a child with anxiety or OCD and most of us weren’t prepared to do it.It’s normal to have grief over what would have been. It’s normal to feel sad about the extra layer of struggles that were scooped onto your parental plate. But how do you move through that grief? How do you work through it so you are better equipped to help your child? In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the grief that most of us feel when raising a child with anxiety or OCD, myself included. I also talk about how to not get so lost in the weeds that you aren’t able to find your way out.To join my FREE 3-Part Video Series: Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD go to http://bit.ly/survivaltoolsforparents ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Let me become your $5 mini-coach. PSP 187: Empowering Our Kids with Anxiety or OCD to Help Themselves

We want the best for our kids. We want our kids to blossom and live a happy fulfilling life. But when our kids start to struggle with anxiety or OCD we might think that rosy picture is gone forever. We might think we have to “cure” anxiety or OCD for them to be well again. But that’s the wrong way to look at it. We don’t need to “cure” them, because that’s actually an impossibility, we need to train them. Kids with anxiety or OCD can have a beautifully productive and happy life, but they need the right tools and the right training to go along with it.In this latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about the importance in empowering our kids to help themselves and how to build their skills for long-term success. To join my FREE 3-Part Video Series: Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD go to http://bit.ly/survivaltoolsforparents ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Let me become your $5 mini-coach. PSP 185: New OCD Graphic Novel for Teens | Interview with Jason Adam Katzenstein

Jason Adam Katzenstein gets it. He gets the struggle of what it feels like to have OCD and he gets the fear that comes along with trying to crush it. Luckily for the OCD community, Jason is a popular and gifted cartoonist who decided to take his personal and vulnerable story and turn it into a graphic novel for the rest of the world to see.Through images and words, he is able to encapsulate the struggles of OCD and the feeling of triumph when you start to push back. I had the pleasure of talking with Jason about his life, his book and his view of OCD. She is Also a Upenn Professor at the Trauma-invested Schools. She offers us a simple framework in which we can help our children self-regulate. To learn more about Lauren’s online classes visit:https://the-behavior-hub.teachable.com/?affcode=198789_jrh0ok1z (affiliate link)Do you want me to be your $5 mini-coach? PSP 182: Helping Anxious Kids Wear Masks

Masks are a struggle for many kids, but if your child has anxiety or OCD it can be a much BIGGER struggle. This could be due to many reasons. Maybe they feel claustrophobic. Maybe they have sensory issues. Or maybe they have social anxiety and it seems embarrassing. Regardless of what the struggle is the end result is the same – a child refusing to wear a mask. This becomes extra tricky when masks are required in many areas. So in this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I outline some mask hacks to help reduce your child’s anxiety and get them to acclimate to the discomfort.Mini-Coaching Episodes:I am starting my mini-coaching episodes! PSP 180: Important Highlights from the OCD Conference for Parents

The International OCD Foundation’s annual conference was cancelled along with pretty much everything else in 2020. But the online version did not disappoint, offering some great takeaways for parents raising kids with OCD. In the latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I highlight some areas parents need to be updated on if they haven’t already. We talk about approaches for treatment resistant kids and how the Inhibitory Learning Model is altering the way we do exposures. Much of this is a review, but a great reminder of how things have been tweaked due to research in the last several years.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxietyHelping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 179: Understanding Magical Thinking in OCD

OCD symptoms and behaviors can look vastly different in each person. You might have a child who has compulsions centered around contamination while another person might have a child with compulsions around magical thinking. You might have a child with both!I always tell parents that you want to be well versed in all the many ways OCD can pop up. OCD is whack-a-mole and it often changes themes and compulsions over time. The best proactive action you can take to help your child with OCD is knowledge. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explain what OCD magical thinking is, how it shows up and how to help a child who is dealing with it.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comSign up for my weekly email newsletter:https://pages.convertkit.com/740ba8cd83/92109b7172Take one of my online classes:To view the entire online school library, go to:http://www.ATparentingSurvivalSchool.comClasses include:How to Crush Social Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-social-anxietyParenting Kids with OCD http://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/child-ocdCrush Moral OCD in Kidshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/moral-ocdTeaching Kids to Crush Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/crush-anxietyHelping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Through Difficult Behaviorshttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/difficult-behaviorsHelping Kids Who are Scared to Sleephttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/scared-to-sleepHandling Sensory-Based Anxietyhttp://www.ATparentingsurvivalschool.com/p/sensory-anxietyLibrary of Live Anxiety and OCD Classes (20 hours of class replays)http://www.ATparentingSurvivalschool.com/p/libraryUltimate list of helpful anxiety products:https://www.ATparentingsurvival.com/reduce-child-anxiety/ To join my private Facebook group visit:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATparentinganxiouskids/Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership?
