PSP 273 Are You Remembering Your Own Mental Health?
When we are raising a child with anxiety or OCD it can be all consuming. So consuming that we put everything on hold, including our own mental health. This is a slippery slope because without our own mental stability, we won’t be able to be an anchor for our child. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore why it is so crucial we focus on our own mental health and how this will actually help our children as well. Also, I’m cooking up an OCD online, on-demand class just for kids and teens to teach them those life long skills to handle those waves! PSP: 272 Dealing with Disappointment when Anxiety or OCD Comes Back
It can feel so good when anxiety and OCD pack their bags and give you your child back. Heck, give you your home back. So it can be more than jarring, when that unwanted guest shows back up at your front door.It is normal to feel disappointment, hopelessness and fear. What if things get really bad again? What if all our progress goes out the window? What if this is a life sentence? Those are understandable feelings after riding past storms. But anxiety and OCD symptoms come and go and all those skills they patiently grew haven’t disappeared. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle those feelings of overwhelm when anxiety or OCD symptoms show up once again. Feelings of overwhelm that not only impact your child, but you as well. Also, I’m cooking up an OCD online, on-demand class just for kids and teens to teach them those life long skills to handle those waves! PSP: 271 Fighting OCD is Often Not What Kids Think
You’ll often hear the word “fight your OCD.” In fact, one of my favorite books about OCD is called Talking Back to OCD, by John March. But sometimes kids misunderstand what this means (and parents too). When we talk about fighting OCD we are usually talking about a counterintuitive way to push back. A way to approach OCD that may not seem like traditional “fighting” at all.In this week’s podcast I talk about the counterintuitive way to “fight” OCD and why we need to clarify this with our kids.I’m cooking up an OCD online, on-demand class just for kids and teens! PSP: 270 Getting Kids to Own Their Journey with Anxiety or OCD
Many of us learn how to help our kids with anxiety or OCD, but are we doing enough to help them help themselves? Helping our kids own their journey is key to their long term success. It is similar to that old proverb: If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. If we are the ones telling our kids what to do and how to do it, will they know how to do it for themselves one day?Our main goal needs to be slowly fostering independence and building empowerment around their journey with anxiety or OCD.In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to help kids own their journey with anxiety or OCD.Waitlist of Crush OCD Course for Kids & TeensOther episodes mentioned during this podcast:Developing Good Incentives and Getting Kids to Work on Anxiety or OCDRoss Greene and Anxiety/OCD Ross Greene and Anxiety/OCD part 2Setting Up Summer Structure***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 269 Helping Kids who are Scared to Go To the Dentist
Most of us don’t love going to the dentist, but for some of our kids it can throw them into a state of panic and fear. This can become a real barrier for check ups, fillings and tooth extractions. So what can a parent do?In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle the fear of going to the dentist one small step at a time.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP 268: Do You Take Your Child’s Anxiety or OCD Personally?
Anxiety and OCD can cause our children to act in ways that can be overwhelming, disheartening and sometimes even hurtful. It is easy to fall into the trap of taking our children’s anxiety or OCD personally. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the many ways we can take our children’s anxiety or OCD behaviors personally, and what we can do instead.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 267 Helping Kids with Emetophobia | The Fear of Throwing Up with Dawn Huebner
It might surprise some people that the fear of throwing up, Emetophobia, is one of the most common anxiety and OCD themes. For those of us raising a child with it, it isn’t surprising at all!Sometimes this fear is triggered by an event or experience, but often it is the imagination alone that causes this immobilizing concern. We all throw up and many of us see others throw up, but we are able to move past it without too much residual impact. When you have Emetophobia you get stuck. Stuck worrying that you might get sick. Stuck worrying that others around you might get sick. Stuck analyzing, avoiding and ruminating. A vicious cycle that can keep people from living a full life. I invited Dr. Dawn Huebner to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to discuss how we can help our kids work through Emetophobia. In her book, Facing Mighty Fears about Throwing Up (Dr. Dawn's Mini Books about Mighty Fears), she teaches kids ages 6-10 years old skills to overcome these struggles.Dr. Dawn’s other Mini Books about Mighty Fears:Facing Mighty Fears About Trying New ThingsFacing Mighty Fears About HealthFacing Mighty Fears About Animals***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 266 How to Turn Our Child’s “Failures” into Wins
We will all fall short sometimes and so will our children with anxiety or OCD. They will avoid, they will crumble, they will give in to their anxiety or OCD. That is all par for the course.More often than not they will view these situations as “failures.” They might beat themselves up or use the experience as evidence that they can’t do it again. So how do we approach our child who couldn’t make it, couldn’t do it, couldn’t get through it? There is learning and growth in everything we do, including our perceived failures. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to help our kids with these stumbles and how to turn those situations into a learning opportunity for growth.Has your child or teen done an exposure they regret? Here is a YouTube video to help them with that.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. NOCD provides online OCD therapy in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. PSP: 265 Helping Kids with Anxiety & OCD with the Downtime of Summer
Summer is here and with that comes extra free time for most of our kids with anxiety or OCD. You would think that would be a wonderful thing. Less pressure from school, homework and peer interactions. Less places to be and less things to do.But for some of our kids that extra downtime can actually increase their anxiety or OCD issues. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why that is and how to structure summer for kids with anxiety or OCD for optimal success.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 264 Parenting a Child When You Have Anxiety or OCD as Well
It’s hard enough to parent a child with anxiety or OCD, but when your own mental health issues are added to the mix, it can be all encompassing. But it’s not all bad.Having your own anxiety or OCD issues can help you be a better parent to a child with anxiety or OCD. You can often empathize with your child more than others can. You know how it feels to have struggles and can relate to them in a way others may not. You might catch things earlier and get them help faster. All of this can be invaluable for your child. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Stacy Quick, an OCD therapist with NOCD to talk about how she parents three kids with anxiety and OCD, while having OCD herself. ***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 263 Why Parents Shouldn’t Rationalize with OCD
It is so tempting to try and rationalize with our child’s OCD. It’s a knee jerk reaction that most of us do at some point. We might try to problem-solve their OCD issues away. We might try to bombard them with facts. We might try to convince them that their compulsive behavior won’t do what OCD says it will do.But it is all a waste of breath. And worse than that, it can do some unintentional harm.In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why we shouldn’t rationalize with our child’s OCD and what to do instead.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 262 The Wait-and-See Approach to Anxiety or OCD
How often do we hear from family, friends and even doctors that we should “wait and see” if it gets worse. We should wait and see if the anxiety or OCD grows bigger. We should wait and see if anxiety or OCD becomes debilitating. We should wait and see if it is truly an issue. It is like watching a tornado slowly approach your home and waiting to see if you really need to go seek shelter. When we proactively help our kids with any anxiety or OCD issue we help them long term. The skills our children learn for anxiety or OCD also help them with life in general. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why the wait-and-see approach for anxiety or OCD isn’t only bad advice, it can be detrimental to your child’s long-term success.FREE VIDEO SERIES: Happening May 12th through May 20th, 2022Join me for my FREE video series, Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. PSP: 261 Helping Anxious Kids Try New Things with Dawn Huebner
Anxious kids often have a hard time trying new things. This might impact what they’ll eat, what activities they’ll try or how they feel about going to new places. It can permeate their lives in a way that limits their experiences and holds them back. When we cater to these fears we can unintentionally grow them bigger. But when we force our kids to try new things we can them shut down. So what are parents supposed to do? The key is to help our kids build skills so they can not only tolerate new experiences, but eventually enjoy them too!In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Dawn Huebner back to the show to discuss ways we can help our kids build these skills. In Dr. Dawn’s book, Facing Mighty Fears About Trying New Things, she teaches kids 6-10 years old how to bravely face new things. To get 15% off any of Dr. Dawn’s Mini Books About Mighty Fears, including this one, use the coupon code MIGHTYFEARS15 by June 30th, 2022 on the publisher’s website here.FREE VIDEO SERIES: Starting May 12th, 2022Join me for my FREE video series, Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. PSP: 260 Handling Sexual Themes Around OCD
OCD can be stigmatizing enough, but when you add sexual themes it can add another layer of guilt and shame. It can also make parents and even therapists uncomfortable! How are you supposed to deal with a sexual intrusive thought that makes you squirm? What if your child’s lack of motivation is due to the embarrassment over the content of their thoughts?I invited Tracie Ibrahim, an OCD therapist with NOCD to help me unpack the many ways sexual themes can pop up and how to help them through it!FREE VIDEO SERIES: Starting May 12th, 2022Join me for my FREE video series, Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. PSP: 258 The Impact of Child Anxiety or OCD on Marriages
There are many things that can put a strain on marriages. Once the honeymoon is over it can be a struggle to agree on finances, household chores and parenting. When anxiety or OCD is in the mix it can make a hard situation even harder.Couples can struggle with a variety of issues around their child’s anxiety or OCD including:-Disagreeing on the seriousness of their child’s anxiety or OCD.-Blaming each other or their parenting for the issue.-Wanting to approach the issue differently.-Resentful that they are doing more than their partner. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.Anxiety and OCD is draining enough. Couples don’t need to drain each other on top of it. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the many issues couples might encounter while raising a child with anxiety or OCD, and how they can work through them.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. So what is a parent to do if their child is doing unseen mental compulsions?I explore “Pure O” and mental compulsions in this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP: 256 How Anxiety & OCD Impact Tech Use
As parents, we all struggle with our children’s tech use. It seems like most kids have their heads buried in their phone, computer or game console. But what if it goes deeper? What if they are using technology to avoid their anxiety or OCD? What if they are using tech to do compulsions? PSP 255 How to Handle New OCD Themes
OCD is often like whack a mole. Just when you get one OCD theme under control, BOOM, another one creeps in to take its place. This can be disheartening, especially if you don’t have the right mindset. OCD is an octopus and its tentacles are the themes. It doesn’t matter what tentacle is causing disruption, it’s the octopus that’s the problem.Often OCD will present new themes when our kids are making progress with old ones. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a step backwards, sometimes it is a desperate octopus looking for a new angle. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle new OCD themes and how to use it as an opportunity to strengthen what your child already knows.🌸 Do you have a child with sensory issues as well? PSP 254 How the Inhibitory Learning Model Changes OCD Treatment
OCD approaches are constantly evolving and changing. This is in part due to the wonderful, ongoing research around OCD.In recent years we’ve seen a growing number of OCD therapists incorporate ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, into OCD therapy. We’ve also seen more clinicians embrace the Inhibitory Learning Model approach and have seen practitioners adapt ERP (Exposure with Response Prevention) to reflect these changes. So what does this all mean?In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I’ll give you the short version of how this might impact how you help your child with OCD.Other Resources on the Inhibitory Learning Model:IOCDF: The Inhibitory Learning Approach to Exposure and Response PreventionYoutube videoIOCDF Research Roundtable: Habituation Therapy, Inhibitory Learning Model, and ACTThis podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP 228: Teaching Our Kids with OCD and Anxiety Self-Compassion with Kimberley Quinlan
Anxiety and OCD can bring with it distress, fear and discomfort. But it can also bring self-loathing, shame, guilt and negative self-talk. When our kids are hard on themselves, their issues can compound, making it difficult for them to use their tools to address anxiety or OCD. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I invited Kimberley Quinlan on to talk about how self-compassion plays a large role in the journey of anxiety and OCD. She talks about why it can be difficult to have self-compassion and the ways in which we can grow and foster it.Kimberley’s book, The Self- Compassion Workbook for OCD comes out October 1, 2021. You can also learn more about her online classes here at CBT School.***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. NOCD provides online OCD therapy in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. None of us like to see our kids suffer. That’s why it’s so hard to see our kids struggle with anxiety or OCD. It can consume their life and ours and that’s heartbreaking. PSP 225: The Difference Between Obsessions and Compulsions (and why it matters)!
The biggest gift we can give our kids with OCD is knowledge. The more they understand how OCD works, the more effective they’ll be at crushing it. One of the biggest areas of confusion is the difference between obsessions and compulsions and why it matters. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I explain the difference between obsessions and compulsions and how to use that understanding to be more effective when dealing with our child’s OCD.AT Parenting Community:To learn more about the AT Parenting Community and join over a thousand parents just like you go to https://www.atparentingcommunity.com/***This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD.
