With a variety of stories, sounds and songs, it is both highly entertaining and educational, teaching the concept and gestures for the ‘Rotor’ in VoiceOver, Apple’s built-in screen reader for iOS Devices. In the app, Ballicopter, the little red helicopter, embarks on an amazing flight through Ballyland, and the Rotor gesture is used to change the unfolding of his engaging adventure. Ballyland Rotor not only supports children’s understanding of the concept of selecting options and settings by way of the Rotor: it also offers them a safe platform to explore and practice the different ways the Rotor gesture can be performed.

Teach Vision Impaired Youngsters VoiceOver Skills and Concepts with the Ballyland Magic Plus app

In this podcast, Kushal Solanki gives us a walkthrough and demonstration of Ballyland Magic Plus, and iOS app that utilizes games to teach youngsters how to use VoiceOver.

From the App Store:

Join thousands of educators around the world and give your blind or visually impaired students a head-start in using an iPad. Ballyland Magic “Plus”, like the original Ballyland Magic app, teaches young students essential skills and concepts for VoiceOver accessibility, Apple’s built-in screen reader, while they are playing a fun game! Completely re-engineered, Ballyland Magic Plus offers additional features and even more learning, as well as improved interaction. The gestures incorporated in this app are: finger drag, split-tap, double tap, single finger flick right/left, and three-finger flick right/left. The popular Tap-tap song motivates even reluctant learners to successfully master the important ‘double tap’, tapping along with the rhythm. In line with the story of the cute Ballylanders who practice their ‘magic’ tricks, your student gradually builds ‘magic’ VoiceOver finger gesture skills, leading up to the Grand Finale: the Magic Show will only go ahead if the student takes charge and effectively performs the practiced gestures – a great way for you to assess a student’s progress!

iFeelit: an introduction to using braille displays on iOS (the 2021 edition)

In this update to his previous podcast episodes on braille, Scott Davert gives us some general information about braille displays as they relate to their use with iOS devices. He then talks about connecting a braille display using USB and then Bluetooth. Further, the braille menu under VoiceOver Settings, navigational commands, text input, how to set up auto scroll, and how to get additional help are all covered.

Links mentioned in the episode include:

Apple's support page covering Common braille commands for VoiceOver on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod

Apple's support article listing Bluetooth keyboard commands for iOS and iPadOS

Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter

A roughly edited transcript of the episode follows.

[music]

Opening announcement: You're listening to the AppleVis Podcast.

Scott Davert: Hey, everybody, Scott Davert here. I'm going to record this podcast on using Braille displays with iOS devices. Now if you've been around AppleVis and the AppleVis Podcast for many years, you may recall that I already did this podcast. However, I did that podcast back in January of 2016. Now that we're five iOS releases later, and five years later in terms of the technology, of course, many things have changed, even some of the most basic level.

What are we covering in this podcast? That's always a good question to ask yourself before, and hopefully the person recording it gives you an idea. What we're going to be covering in this podcast is, first of all, general information about Braille displays and what connects and what doesn't. Then we'll talk about connecting both through Bluetooth and USB. We'll go through the Braille Display menu on iOS. We'll talk about navigation in terms of getting around your various home screens, activating apps, and so on and so forth. From there, we'll go into text editing very briefly. We'll talk about how to get help because we all need that once in a while, and setting up auto scroll.

The first topic, general information, well, pretty much any Braille display made within the last 10 years. I say pretty much because there may be one out there somewhere that I'm not aware of that doesn't support iOS. To my knowledge, all of the Braille displays on the market do support iOS and voice-over. What you will have to make sure is that you're running a compatible version of iOS.

For example, if you are running one of the new Humanware displays, they recommend that you run iOS 13.6 or later. The new Orbit 40, Orbit Reader 40, I should say, emulates a VarioUltra, which means the Orbit Reader 40 supports iOS devices, going back to, I want to say, 8.3, it may have been 8.4, or something like that. Anyway, whatever it is, it goes back many iOS versions. The focus fifth-generation supported iOS, I want to say, with maybe iOS nine. I don't remember exactly on that one.

Anyway, point being is, check with your user…

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to automatically deny App Tracking requests in iOS and iPadOS.

App Tracking Transparency (ATT) is a feature in iOS and iPadOS that aims to give users more control over which apps can track their activity across apps owned by other companies for targeted advertising purposes by requiring user permission to access the device's identifier for advertisers (IDFA). To automatically deny all tracking requests, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, and toggle the "Allow apps to request to track" switch off.

Note: This setting will not affect an app's ability to track your activity within that app or other apps owned by the same company. When played as a solo instrument, the tabla is accompanied (usually on the harmonium or sarangi) by a continuous cyclical musical phrase or riff called the "Lehra" or "Nagma" (ostinato in western music) that keeps track of the "aavartan" or rythmic cycle in the chosen "taal".

Quick Tip: How to Change Your Preferred Music, Podcasts, and Audiobook App Using Siri in iOS

Apple in iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 added a new option to help Siri learn to select your preferred audio apps for listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

The first time you ask Siri to play music, a podcast, or an audiobook after installing these updates, you will be asked to select your preferred app from a list of those you have installed and which support this feature. Siri will remember your selection and will use that service whenever you ask it to play something. So, for example, if you select Spotify to play a song, the next time that you ask Siri to play a song you will not need to specify “on Spotify” to prevent iOS from defaulting to Apple Music. Note that Apple has clarified that this is not a "default" music service setting, and there is no toggle to select a service you want to continually use, but it is a feature where Siri will learn your preferences and adapt to them. Accordingly, Siri will occasionally re-ask for your preferred services to keep up to date.

In this podcast, Thomas Donville walks us through this process and explains how to have Siri change your preferred app at any time.
