<p>By default, VoiceOver does not start automatically at the macOS login prompt. In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to change this. The steps to do so are as follows:</p><ol><li>Choose Apple > System Settings, and select Lock Screen in the table.</li><li>Click accessibility options and toggle the “VoiceOver” switch on.</li><li>Click done.</li></ol><p>On some older Mac models, if FileVault disk encryption is turned on, which is the default, VoiceOver should start when the Mac boots and prompt for the username, and then prompt for the password if the username is entered correctly. However, if you’d rather not have to manually enter your username or be able to navigate other elements in the window, you must turn FileVault off. To do this, open System Settings, select Privacy & Security in the table, and click “FileVault turn off.”</p>

<p>In this episode, Tyler demonstrates the VoiceOver Text Checker on macOS, a feature that identifies common errors in typed text such as misspellings, repeated spaces, and misplaced capital letters.</p><p>This feature can be accessed via Keyboard Commander, and by default is mapped to the letter D. When in a text field, pressing this command should present menus for the types of errors identified in the text, such as misspellings, white space, etc.</p><p>At the time of posting, this feature has several bugs, such as not always identifying errors even when they are present, spelling suggestions not being present in the context menu when selecting a misspelled word, and the left and right arrow keys moving by word instead of character after selecting an error from one of the menus. These issues seem to occur inconsistently, and different users report different experiences with this feature, so your individual results may vary. Apple has been made aware of all these issues, and you can find further discussion of them in this <a href="https://www.applevis.com/forum/macos-mac-apps/text-checker-isnt-working-apple-being-no-help">AppleVis forum thread.</a></p>

<p>With iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later, you can schedule times to receive a summary of notifications each day so you can catch up when it's convenient for you. The summary is personalised to you and ordered by priority based on how you use your apps. The most relevant notifications will appear at the top.</p><p>In this podcast, Thomas Domville walks us through the process of setting up a notification summary and shows us how they appear in the Notifications Center.</p><p>To schedule a notification summary:</p><ol><li>Go to Settings>Notifications>Scheduled Summary, then turn on Scheduled Summary.</li><li>Under Apps in Summary, select the apps you want to include in your notification summary.</li><li>Under Schedule, tap the Add button to add a new schedule or the Remove button to remove a schedule. Then adjust the time for each scheduled summary you've set up.</li></ol><p>To add new apps to the summary, go back to Settings>Notifications>Scheduled Summary and select the apps under apps in Summary. Each app will appear with a number, which is the average number of notifications you receive from that app each day.</p>

<p>With iOS 16, Apple added a new feature for AirPods users called Personalized Spatial Audio. <a href="https://www.apple.com/in/newsroom/2022/09/apple-announces-the-next-generation-of-airpods-pro/">According to Apple,</a> “with Personalised Spatial Audio, the AirPods listening experience is even more immersive,” as you perceive sound individually, based on the size and shape of your head and ears.</p><p>Personalized Spatial Audio does this by using the TrueDepth camera on an ‌iPhone‌ to analyze the shape of your ears in three dimensions and use this mapping to create a personal sound profile that's tuned just for you. <p>In this podcast, Thomas Domville takes us deep in to Focus, an iOS feature that helps you reduce distractions and set boundaries. When you want to concentrate on a specific activity, you can customize one of the provided Focus options—for example Work, Personal, or Sleep—or create a custom Focus. You can use Focus to temporarily silence all notifications, or allow only specific notifications—ones that apply to your task, for example—and let other people and apps know you’re busy.</p><p>More information on Focus is available from <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/guide/iphone/iphd6288a67f/ios">this Apple Support page.</a></p>

<p>In this podcast, Thomas Domville demonstrates how in iOS 16 you are now able to recover deleted conversations in the native iOS Messages app. Note that this will only be possible for up to approximately 30 days after the conversation was deleted.</p><ol><li>Open the Messages app and double-tap the Edit button.</li><li>From the menu that appears, double-tap Show Recently Deleted.</li><li>Select at least one conversation.</li><li>Double-tap the Recover button.</li><li>Double-tap Recover Messages from the confirmation dialog.</li><li>Double-tap the Done button.</li></ol><p>Alternatively, the VoiceOver rotor can be used to recover or permanently delete a conversation.</p>

<p>With Always On Display, your iPhone 14 Pro or later pro-model iPhone will dim the Lock Screen while still showing information, such as the time, widgets and wallpaper, all while using new technologies that make the display power efficient.</p><p>There is likely to be no utility to this feature for blind and some low vision users, so in this episode Thomas Domville shows us how to disable it.</p><p>To disable Always On Display, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display, and double-tap the "Always On Display" switch. <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT213435">This Apple support page provides more information on Using Always-On display with your pro-model iPhone.</a></p>

<p>In this episode, Thomas Domville shows us how to turn on the Mac-like startup and shutdown chimes that are available on all iPhone 14 and newer models. To do this, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual, and double-tap the "Power on and off sounds" toggle.</p><p>Note that as this option is facilitated by the iPhone's boot rom, the read-only code responsible for starting the iPhone and initializing iOS, it is limited to the iPhone 14 and newer devices. <p>On iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple has replaced the ‘notch’ that's been a feature of Face ID-equipped iPhones since the iPhone X with what it calls the Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island is a small area of display pixels surrounding the pill-shaped cutout. It appears whenever your iPhone is unlocked, and changes size and shape to accommodate various types of alerts, notifications, and interactions such as music that’s playing, your timer, an AirDrop connection, and directions from Maps.</p><p>In this podcast, Thomas Domville shows us how VoiceOver users locate the Dynamic Island and its contents.</p>

<p>New to the iPhone with the release of iOS 16 is the ability to report SMS/MMS messages as junk. This expands on the built-in "Report Junk" feature in Messages that previously only let you report iMessages. <p>Added in iOS 14, Sound Recognition is an accessibility feature that uses on-device intelligence to listen for certain sounds, like a doorbell, fire alarm or a baby crying, and alert the user if they're detected. <p>In this podcast, Thomas Domville discusses and shows us how — with the release of iOS 16 — Apple has made it possible to view details of all the Wi-Fi networks your iPhone has connected to in the past and remembered. If iCloud Keychain is enabled on all your Apple devices, you'll even be able to see the Wi-Fi networks saved by those other devices. For example, you could use your iPhone to see all the networks your Mac or iPad has saved, and copy the password so that you can connect via your iPhone. Additionally, you can remove old ones without being near their access points.</p>

We didn't do it last year, but we did it two or three years before that, and they're back. It's Sarah Herrlinger and Dean Hudson from Apple's accessibility team. Great to have them back.</p><p>Thomas: I know, right. It's been a couple years, so I can't wait to see what they have to say and offer to us in terms of accessibility for this year. I'm pretty excited.</p><p>Dave: Is there anything in particular that stood out for you before we jump into it?</p><p>Thomas: I know everybody in the community has been talking about the new voices, especially, Eloquence. But voices, I think that's probably the biggest hit out there to date. Would you agree with that?</p><p>Dave: Yeah, I think so. I think it's definitely been the biggest news of this year's cycle, so yeah. Let's see what they have to say about that. Should we go ahead and jump into it?</p><p>Thomas: Yeah. And I'm guessing this was probably the first WWDC this year at a few years where you actually had people as well.</p><p>Sarah: It was, we had a hybrid model this year, but did kick it off with the keynote and the state of the union. And some of those major things, the design awards that go on on day one were done in a way to have more people available on campus. <p>In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to enable audio descriptions for the TV app, as well as for videos on supported websites in Safari on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Note that not all apps and websites that offer audio described content detect this setting, meaning you'll have to manually enable audio descriptions through the playback interfaces of such services.</p><p>To enable automatic playing of audio descriptions for the TV app and Safari on iOS and iPadOS, go to settings > Accessibility > Audio descriptions, and enable the "Audio descriptions" toggle. To do the same on macOS, go to System Settings > Accessibility > Descriptions, and enable the "Play audio descriptions when available" toggle.</p>

It includes books for school, career, and reading pleasure, as well as titles in over 34 languages.</p><p>Hema, is excited to introduce us to Bookshare's upcoming suite of free reading tools: Bookshare Reader for Web, Bookshare Reader for iOS, Bookshare Reader for Android, and Bookshare Reader for Alexa. This suite of free tools, available summer 2022, will make reading accessible books easier than ever before.</p><p>Bookshare Reader for the Web is currently in private testing in select school districts across the US. <p>In this podcast, Tyler discusses and demonstrates the Grouping Behavior options available for VoiceOver on macOS. These allow you to choose whether VoiceOver requires an action to interact with items in a content area (such as a scroll area) or a group (such as a toolbar):</p><p>The four available options are:</p><ol><li>Standard: VoiceOver requires an action. You must press VO-Shift-Down Arrow to start interacting with the items in an area or group, and VO-Shift-Up Arrow to stop interacting with the items. When this option is selected, VoiceOver may automatically interact with some groups on web pages to streamline navigation. If you don’t want VoiceOver to automatically interact with a group, press VO-Shift-Right Arrow or Left Arrow. If Quick Nav is on, press Shift-Right Arrow or Left Arrow.</li><li>Bookend groups: VoiceOver identifies the start and end of an area or group as you navigate its items, but no action is required to interact with them.</li><li>Announce groups: VoiceOver announces when you enter or exit an area or group, but no action is required to interact with its items.</li><li>Ignore groups: VoiceOver doesn’t identify or announce areas or groups, and no action is required to interact with its items.</li></ol><p>Note: Some areas (such as tables) always require interaction, regardless of the setting you choose. This prevents you from having to navigate potentially large numbers of items, such as thousands of items in a Mail inbox.</p>
