2019 - 11 - 08 Democratic Confederalism - N Syria - Ismet Tastan BTL
EAfter the Arab Spring, Kurdish forces took control of North-East Syria, known as Rojava – or western Kurdistan in the Kurdish language. They began implementing a radically democratic system of governance. Each locality is independent, while under a regional constitution guaranteeing wide ranging freedoms. Each sub community in a locality – women, ethnic groups, youth, etc – are asked to organise themselves, and are given an equal voice in the local organising meetings. If the decision is about a technical matter, experts are brought in for consultation by the community. These meetings are similar to the Peoples Assembly model used worldwide in many democratic movements. Local meetings then federate to form municipal and regional bodies to do larger tasks. Power is maintained at the level of the locality. The economy is being transformed into a Co-operative dominated system. We are joined in this interview by Ismet Tastan, who tells us much about how the system works and how the various elements fit together. The Syrian Democratic Forces (yes, the armed forces are democratically run) have been closely allied with the USA for years, and have been the only effective on the ground force opposing – and defeating – ISIS in the region. Unfortunately in late 2019, USA president Donald Trump pulled out the last USA troops, knowingly allowing Turkish president Raccip Erdogan, who has been at war with the Kurdish people for many years, to invade northern Syria. Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad and aly Vladimir Putin have regained control of the rest of north-east Syria. The fate of the people and the democratic system looks grim. Deepening Democracy - S.Niemeyer A.Cahill T.Dunlop N.Paris L.Waters - GI19 BTL
EThese recordings were made by Radio Behind the Lines, at the Green Institutes 2019 conference. The Green Institute is an Australian non-profit organisation, their mission being to “support green politics through education, action, research and debate“. Green politics means broad community-wide change grounded in the principles of ecology, social justice, democracy, non-violence, sustainability and respect for diversity. With ecological breakdown underway, inequality spiralling, colonialism and patriarchy still not dismantled, and the hate-fuelled far right on the rise, we desperately need democracies which are able to both reverse these trends and create hope-filled resilience in the face of difficult times to come. Meanwhile, around the world, people and communities are experimenting with exciting and innovative democratic practices, recasting the relationship between citizens and government, drawing on ancient wisdom, involving deep engagement and participation. The Green Institute’s 2019 conference challenged us to think deeply about democracy, and inspires us to act fast, and with great determination, to cultivate democracy at every level.

Adani Red Alert - Frontline Action On Coal - Extinction Rebellion - Stop Adani - 2019-08-09 - BTL
EAs Australian politics continues its scramble to open up vast new coal mines and drive the world towards a climate change catastrophe, the Adani mine in the Carmichael basin of Queensland has begun clearing land for its mine, endangered species and all. We talk to some of the players who are at the cutting edge of climate activism about how we can stop the juggernaut and institute a better, saner way of living. Extinction Rebellion asserts the people of the worlds right to exist into the future, and not be made extinct by corporate greed. Stop Adani is a nationwide coalition of local groups, dedicated to stopping the opening up of the Carmichael Basin, the coal from which will topple the world into climate chaos if burned. Frontline Action on Coal (FLAC) are actively blockading the Adani mine, and have put out a RED ALERT for people to make their way up to Queensland to physically stop the mines construction. Imagineering - NENA Can and Transition Canberra - 2019-05-31 BTL
EImagineering, or Envisioning, is a technique which enables a community to imagine the best possible future for itself. Once a vision for the community is established, they can then set about figuring out how to get there. Transition Canberra and the New Economy Network of Australia's Canberra Regional Hub independently wound up hosting envisioning type events within a fortnight of one another. We had them both in for a yarn about what they were up to. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International License. Extinction Rebellion - Curly - With Bec From Earth Matters 2019 - 05 - 03 - BTL
EExtinction Rebellion has grown from a small outfit in the UK to an international movement in a matter of months. Alongside the powerful School Strike 4 Climate they have been credited with the UKs recent announcement of a Climate Emergency. Australia has a number of XR chapters opening up across the country. Behind the Lines spoke with the organiser of one of these recently formed chapters.
Stop Adani Convoy - Stories From The Road - 2019 - 05 - 04 BTL
EThe Bob Brown Foundation launhced a convoy which went from Hobart up to the depths of coal mining country in outback Queensland, holding rallies along the way. They returned to Canberra for a big rally at Parliament House which drew about 5000 people. Behind the Lines caught up with a few of the folks who had been on the convoy just after the Canberra rally, to have a yarn about how it had gone.
Dave Kerin - from BLF to Earthworker - 2018-10-19 BTL
EThe Builders Laborers Federation was a union in Australia, representing those workers without a trade who did all the hard yards on the building site. Through their strong community links, they heard lots about the effects of inappropriate development on normal folks, and came up with the "Green Ban" as a response. They simply refused to work on projects that were socially or environmentally damaging. The effects of the Green Bans are still around today - the historic district of the rocks in Sydney is only there due to BLF action. The BLF was deregistered by the government of the day, and smashed. One of the things to come out of the rubble was the Earthworker Co-operative, which is designed to transef the ownership and control of work itself into the hands of the workers. We hope you enjoy this interview.
School Strike 4 Climate - Mae And Indy - With Annie From Stop Adani - 2019-03-08 BTL
EThe School Strike 4 Climate is an international movement run by school students. Today we have Maeve and Indy, who are part of the Canberra contingent, to have a yarn about what is going on, and why. Inspired by the bold, lone strike action of Greta Thunberg on the steps of parliament in Sweden, the idea has spread to all continents. Find the strike map here: https://www.fridaysforfuture.org/events/map Many groups are going out every Friday, with periodic global events, such as the one on March 15th, 2019 discussed here. Australia is still bent on developing massive fossil fuel sources, which should definitely be left in the ground, such as the Adani mine opening up the way for many coal projects planned for the Galilee Basin https://www.stopadani.com/ and the new front rapidly opening in the Canning Basin in the Kimberly, Western Australia. https://www.environskimberley.org.au/fracking http://www.frackfreekimberley.org.au/ Hopefully our intrepid leaders will take this strong hint from our kids, and prioritse our actual means for life over our imaginary need for incessant growth of money. Music for today is from the Earth Guardians, a group of kids who have been on this path for over a decade now, and Xiuhtezcatl, who is also heavily involved with Earth Guardians. Please support them by buying their albums, and check out these links: https://xiuhtezcatl.com/ https://www.earthguardians.org/ and the absolute classic "Live as if our Future Matters" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANrxvmHUuV0 This interview (not the music) is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International License. Democratic Confederalism in North Syria - Fionn Skiotis - Australians for Kurdistan - 2018-12-14 BTL
EThe locals in mainly Kurdish Northern Syria, or Rojava (western Kurdistan) have managed, since the Assad regime lost control of the area, to implement a bottom-up "Democratic Confederal" structure - designed largely by Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the kurdish marxist rebel group PKK, who has been imprisoned in a Turkish prison for decades. The system was inspired in part by the writings of Murray Bookchin, founder of the Social Ecology movement. Democratically run militias from the area have cleared Islamic State forces from the region, with USA air support. Strong emphasis is placed on the equality of women, and many ethnic groups are now involved in highly localised decision making bodies. This equality is designed into the democratic confederal system, with co-rule by male and female delegates, and deputy positions reserved for ehtnic groups not holding the top position in an organisation. A unique feature of this system is that it does NOT seek to form its own state, or accept the rule of any state. The bottom up democracy takes care of things without the need for a structure which only results in centralisation and monopoly of power and the troubles which accompany such centralisation. Fionn Skiatis from Australians for Kurdistan has been studying the movement for years, and joined Behind the Lines for a yarn about it. We only covered a part of the story and hope to return to it soon. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International License. Bhive Bendigo - co-operatives and commons platform co-op 2018-10-22 BTL
EThe bHive Cooperative is a community owned person-to-person sharing economy platform being developed for Bendigo. Behind the Lines dropped in and talked with Ian McBurney and Clare Fountain. The system builds on a personalised "Village", providing each member with an assortment of Commons which they can use to develop their community and reduce their cost of living. On top of that bHive will build a network of co-operative enterprises, providing work and keeping wealth circulating i the local economy. CORENA - Renewables revolving loans fund - Bill Gresham - SEE-change talk - 2018-08-28 BTL
ECitizens Own Renewable Energy Network Australia, or CORENA provides a practical and effective way for ‘the people’ to collectively fund new renewable energy installations NOW instead of just waiting on government action. Our solar funding model (revolving loan fund) enables all of us who want a rapid transition to renewable energy to chip in and collectively help pay for practical renewable energy projects. Small amounts of money from LOTS of people can reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions and, in conjunction with divestment, help eliminate the adverse health and environmental effects of coal and gas. Bill Gresham from CORENA gave a talk for SEE-Change in Canberra on the 28th August 2018. Behind the lines was there and captured it. EThe arrival of the climate crisis, sharply deepening inequality, the rise of the extreme right, and massively accelerating technological development make the next 25 years among the most pivotal in human history to date. EShareable is the most widely read journal of the "sharing economy". https://www.shareable.net/ Through their work they have amassed many case studies, and really got to know their stuff. Through their "sharing cities" program they have been building networks around the globe of new ways for cities and regions to meet their needs, reducing human dependence on an extractive economy to simply live. Shareable has now released their book - Sharing Cities: Activating the Urban Commons. Darren Sharp, the Australian editor of shareable, and the co-author of the book, spoke to us a few weeks before before the April 10th Canberra launch of the book. A truly ecological politics will connect us to each other, to and within nature, and to democracy – to our own agency. It will see us all as the protagonists in our own lives, but within supportive, enabling, diverse and connected communities. Find out more at www.greeninstitute.org.au/ Edited by Behind the Lines. Earthworker Co - Ops- Katherine Cunningham - 2018 - 02 - 23 BTL
EEarthworker is establishing a network of worker-owned cooperatives committed to sustainable enterprise throughout Australia. They believe social and environmental exploitation are intertwined, and that the problems of climate change, job insecurity and growing inequality must be tackled simultaneously, through greater grassroots economic ownership. They have already established Redgum, a worker owned cleaners co-operative in Melbourne, and are in the final stages of establishing the Earthworker Energy Manufacturing Cooperative (formerly Eureka’s Future). We had a yarn with Katherine Cunningham from Earthworker.
