Dr. Emma Campbell recently joined ACTCOSS as Chief Executive Officer in January 2020 and is the former CEO of the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA), Australia’s peak representative body advocating on behalf of Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Emma’s diverse portfolio covers a wealth of experience ranging across academia, the community sector, international crisis responses, business and government sectors. She also speaks Chinese and Korean and has completed three missions with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), including in Swaziland (now Eswatini), Sierra Leone and Lebanon.

The response has been a verge and community garden revolution! Especially since COVID with a surge of renewed interest in gardening, It’s one of those ideas that is now capturing the public’s imagination and we are starting to see more and more street verge and community gardens appearing, many of them growing food. Then in studio from 9:30-10am, we will welcome, Beyond Uranium Canberra, a group which focuses on the impacts of uranium mining, nuclear weapons and nuclear power, and radioactive waste on First Nations communities. They will be followed by fellow Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Sue Wareham OAM - President of the Medical Association for Prevention of War and Secretary of Australians for War Powers Reform from 10-10:30am. Both of our guests won their 2017 Peace Prize as founders of ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, in which they are both still active. It's going to be one helluva big show about why nuclear weapons and uranium mining still represent a major existential threat to our planet!

The Resource Co-op is a worker owned coop with 33 worker / owners, and has been running since 1993. What began as a tip face recycling effort is now flourishing, despite many setbacks that may have folded a different type of enterprise. Amongst other things, they currently: - run a tip shop, including 2nd hand arts supplies - pull large buildings apart by hand - reducing massive demolition waste - collect unwanted reusable things from the public - collect recyclables from building sites - run an annual art from trash exhibition - run education programs They are completely self funding through their activities. EThis week, it’s our pleasure to welcome back Dr. Stephen Mugford, who will be discussing the National Resilience Project and accompanying report established by the Institute for Integrated Economic Research and Global Access Partners, and why Trust and Social Cohesion are vital foundations for Resilience. BIO Stephen is a sociologist, public policy specialist and facilitator who taught at the ANU from 1974-1996 and has over 40 years experience as an educator, researcher, facilitator and change management consultant for government, military, private sector and non-government organisations. He has been both an advisor to senior leaders over many years and an active player in major change programs, preceded by a long and successful academic career, specialising in sociology and social psychology, earning a major reputation as a scholarly researcher in criminology and drug policy.

EThis week on Behind the Lines we welcome back two former guests, Dr. Jill Woods from the Nepal Leprosy Trust and Barrister Ian Neil SC with Grameen Australia to discuss Microcredit Financing and the difference that the cost of a meal out in Australia can make for people in impoverished communities seeking to transform their lives and communities. The leprosy trust already has an established microfinance initiative that is making enormous difference to the lives of women and their families impacted by leprosy in poverty stricken communities in Nepal. Many entrepreneurial enterprises have sprung from the initiative and are thriving. Jill will be sharing some stories of these successes, and personal insights garnered from her active involvement and time spent volunteering in Nepal treating Leprosy patients. Joining us later today via phone, we are fortunate to have leading Australian Barrister, employment and Industrial law expert, and chair of Grameen Australia, Ian Neil SC back with us. We previously hosted Ian last December to discuss the ins and outs of the Jobkeeper scheme and the employment contract. This morning Ian will be chatting to us about Grameen Australia’s Microfinance Initiative, working with Nobel Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to build ‘a world of 3 zeros’: zero poverty, zero unemployment, zero emissions.
