Coalition of Everyone - Sonia Randhawa 2020-04-10 BTL
EThe Coalition of Everyone is a non-partisan, non-profit organisation, that offers alternatives to handle the escalating climate crisis, alternatives to politics as usual, alternatives that build community, not division. We believe that to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies we have to overcome democratic disconnect by removing the barriers to change, and by removing barriers to participatory democracy. Democracy improves the more people participate. And the climate emergency needs everyone involved. We can do this by re-engaging diverse voices of people through both a People’s Assembly framework and the need for formal Citizen’s Assemblies, through all levels of society and governance. Sonia Randhawa had a yarn with BTL about COE and all things democracy. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International License. Indigenous Democracy - Decolonising Democracy T.Goreng P.Collis K.Hurst L.Thorpe GI19 BTL
EThese recordings were made by Radio Behind the Lines, at the Green Institutes 2019 conference. Apologies to Paul Collis for the poor quality of the recording of his voice. We have spent many hours trying to make it more audible, and reckon it is well worth listening carefully as Paul is very much worth listening to. The Green Institute is an Australian non-profit organisation, their mission being to “support green politics through education, action, research and debate“. Green politics means broad community-wide change grounded in the principles of ecology, social justice, democracy, non-violence, sustainability and respect for diversity. With ecological breakdown underway, inequality spiralling, colonialism and patriarchy still not dismantled, and the hate-fuelled far right on the rise, we desperately need democracies which are able to both reverse these trends and create hope-filled resilience in the face of difficult times to come. Meanwhile, around the world, people and communities are experimenting with exciting and innovative democratic practices, recasting the relationship between citizens and government, drawing on ancient wisdom, involving deep engagement and participation. The Green Institute’s 2019 conference challenged us to think deeply about democracy, and inspires us to act fast, and with great determination, to cultivate democracy at every level.

A Permaculture Syllabus for SE Australia - Graeme George - 180418 - APC14
EGraeme George is part of the Permaculture Educators Guild, a professional guild formed by a group of permaculture educators in Victoria in 2014 to advance permaculture education in south-eastern Australia and beyond. Though based in Victoria its focus is the south-eastern Australian bioregion, not limited by State boundaries. Key purposes of the Guild are : • collaborative development of a “Syllabus for Permaculture Design in South-eastern Australia”, making it available as a model for other bioregions to adapt and adopt. The Guild sees the Syllabus as a set of guidelines for structuring Permaculture Design Course content — what to teach, not how to teach it, as a contribution to a common language for permaculture design. [The Guild’s syllabus builds on earlier versions developed under the auspices of Permaculture Melbourne’s Educators Group.] • promotion of the Permaculture Design Courses through vocational training, particularly Accredited Permaculture Training • sharing of teaching resources and professional development of members The Guild encourages and looks forward to the establishment of autonomous chapters in other bioregions and has a vision of a network of bioregional chapters developing locally-appropriate materials contributing to the global advancement of permaculture. For further information about the Permaculture Educators Guild activities or membership, or to go on the Permaculture Educators Network email list please contact PEG Admin [email protected] https://permacultureaustralia.org.au/permaculture-educators-guild/ Graeme George spoke about PEG’s most recent syllabus at the 14th Australasian Permaculture Convergence in 2018, where Align in the Sound recorded him. Food Community n Jobs - Callum Champagne - Green Connect - APC14-2018
EThe Green Connect farm is one of the country’s leading examples of urban agriculture. It is an 11-acre urban farm that uses permaculture and organic principles to produce fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey and free-range meat. The farm is located on land behind Warrawong High School. They have been developing the farm in order to: - Create more jobs and employment pathways in a region with too few - Fully utilise the land, activating the farm as a space in which the community can engage - Expand our impact by sharing what we do (showing people what is possible and teaching and inspiring them to reduce waste and grow fair food themselves) Cal Champagne spoke at the 14th Australasian Permaculture Convergence in 2018, where Behind the Lines recorded him. School Food Gardens - Living Classroom Illawarra Fifteen Years On - Aaron Sorenson - APC14-2018
EThe Living Classroom has a 16-year history, seeded in the Illawarra region of NSW by Daniel Deighton and Aaron Sorensen who developed the program within Cringila Public School in 2003. The program’s success was then further supported by the development of the permaculture partnership within the Illawarra where local business, organisations, and council supported the programs implementation within the Warrawong Community of schools. This now includes a range of schools from primary through to tertiary institutions taking on the program. It is an outdoor learning program where students learn practical life skills like designing their own vegetable gardens, growing and then preparing their own food and the importance of regenerative practices such as soil building, water saving and composting, all while getting out in nature and being active. Unique to the program is an ambassador model of “kids teaching kids” where students engaged in the program are supported to be leaders of their Living Classroom. EGhillar, also known as Michael Anderson is from the Euahlayi people on the borderlands of NSW and QLD. He was involved in the Black Power movement in the 60s and 70s, co-established the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. He is fully fluent in both Euahlayi and White law, and has been all over the world researching, connecting with other First Nations, and painstakingly discovering and establishing the legal course to Sovereignty. He has taught in many universities, and is Coordinator of the interim National Unity Government of the Sovereign Union. http://nationalunitygovernment.org/content/about-sovereign-union We had a great yarn about pre 1788 forms of organisation and governance in this continent. Community Mobilisation Around The Fire Emergency And Beyond - BTL 2020 - 02 - 28
EIn the wake of what is considered to be the worst bushfire disaster in Australia’s memory, affected communities and individuals are still frantically picking up the pieces of their lives, often struggling to meet their most basic needs. When disaster strikes, the supports you traditionally rely on can fall devastatingly short. Electricity. Food. Shelter. Communications. Where do you turn as the longer struggle begins? Today we are exploring some of the remarkable community responses that have arisen in the aftermath of these disasters, and what we will be dealing with as time goes on. GUESTS: • Penny Koethe, who has been helping out farmers throughout Australia for more than a year, and is currently co-ordinating on the ground help for organic farmers through ORICoop • Mark Spain, from Global Learning, who is bringing people together and facilitating community renewal projects on the south coast. • Andrew Dale from The G-Spot food van in Gungahlin, who has helped organise the gathering of food, water, supplies, white goods, furniture, vehicles and basic shelter from the Canberra community, delivering them to fire ravaged towns • Kate Tonacia and Fanji Stradwick from PTSD - picking up the peaces, an ex police officer and ex ambulance officer, who have been involved in PTSD support and help for the past 11 years.
