STEMMA is not an original idea, we’re working within an ecosystem of many other plug and play systems. We started STEMMA in 2014, and intended to be compatible with Grove only (cause that’s all that existed at the time) but then when Qwiic came around in 2017, added a smaller connector so we could work with those parts too! #stemma #grove #qwiic STEMMA attempts to be as cross-compatible as possible with both Grove and Gravity (compatible connectors & 3-5V power/logic). The idea behind the upcoming BRAINCRAFT board (stand-alone, and Pi "hat") is that you'd be able to "craft brains" for Machine Learning on the EDGE, with Microcontrollers. On ASK AN ENGINEER, our founder & engineer chatted with Pete Warden, the technical lead of the mobile, embedded TensorFlow Group on Google’s Brain team about what would be ideal for a board like this. What did we come up with? Here is a start! #machinelearning #tensorflow #ai Inputs: Loads of sensors! Can be connected via stemmaQT. Image sensors, like a camera, Panasonic Grid-EYE. Heat-Sensitive camera, person detector. Microphone, voice detection for powering off. Accelerometer, gestures, vibration sensing, predictive maintenance. Outputs: Screen for debugging Speaker for audio feedback as to what is going on. Relay control to turn things on/off, etc. and/or actuator. Connectivity: NB / Narrowband IoT. Wireless flexibility. Works with adafruit.io, of course! Power: Battery powered / low-power. Solar add-ons, energy harvesting, OK with lots of power sources that are not reliable. Last year around this time we designed the Hallowing M0. This year we've got the Hallowing M4, which has an upgraded chip, now a Cortex M4 @ 120MHz with lots more memory to run CircuitPython. We saw these ultra-low cost (20 cents!) 3-axis accelerometers on LCSC a few month ago and have been experimenting with them. They've got +-2/4/8/16g range, and 14bit resolution according to the datasheet. There's also tap & freefall detection which makes them a good alternative to accelerometers that are 2 or 3x the price. We have written an Arduino library to start, so far so good! On the PCB we're also experimenting with adding JST-SH connects, like Sparkfun qwiic boards. learn guide - https://learn.adafruit.com/neotrellis-soundboard/ This is a sound board using Adafruit’s NeoTrellis. This lets you trigger audio files so you can play it like a musical instrument. Each button can have different sounds so you can build your own sample kit. All of the electronics are housed in our 3D printed enclosure. The top and bottom covers snap fit so it’s easy to put together. It’s designed to be portable, compact device and it’s open source. In previous build we used several boards to make a similar project. For this one we can use Adafruit’s Feather and the Prop Maker Feather Wing. Check out the learn guide for documentation. You can follow along step by step to wire the electronics and build the assembly. The Feather shows up as a USB drive so you can edit the code directly on the device. All of the files live on the drive so it’s easy to change code on any computer. You Can Shake the device to shuffle the audio. Pressing the button on the side will reset the arrangement. We think it’s a fun demo of what you can with the accelerometer.
