Hosts and PTSI Resilience Trainers John Salerno and Samantha Horwitz talk with Doug White, veteran, retired first responder, and author on @A Badge of Honor TV.Doug spent over three decades serving in the military and in law enforcement. He witnessed firsthand the toll that trauma can take on a person’s brain, body, and spirit. He knows how it feels to hit the absolute bottom—alone, late at night, hidden away behind a school, his hand on his pistol, contemplating a choice he could not take back. What saved Doug was grace, the unwavering love of his wife, and her deep faith in them as a couple, and God. He was pulled from the edge, and it completely changed his course. Doug realized that we are not meant to keep reliving our past pain. Instead, we can find purpose and growth in moving beyond it.Doug is the founder of Tell This Story LLC,. He is committed to helping veterans, first responders, and their families navigate that same challenging path. We don’t have to stay stuck. We can turn darkness into a source of strength, resilience, and transformation.Doug wrote Hiding in Plain Sight: The Truth About Trauma, Service, and The Way Forward to share not just his journey, but to provide a platform for others to use their voices. S2 Ep 1A Badge of Honor TV Season 2 Ep. 1 with Ret. NYPD Vincent Scotto
Hosts and PTSI Resilience Trainers John Salerno and Samantha Horwitz talk with Vincent Scotto, retired NYPD on @A Badge of Honor TV.After a 20 year career with the NYPD, Vincent moved on thinking the transition would be easy. "You can put on a uniform, bullet-resistant vest, gun belt, and shield, but it does not make you invincible."So, how do we take a proactive approach in hopes of preventing the “self-destructive” behavior that often follows? Vince learned by listening without judgement, showing compassion, as well as providing clarity, he was able to help himself uncover his voice and path for growth increasing his well being and ultimate "self-worth" and now he helps others do the same. Ep 102Ep. 102 Out of The Darkness, A Firefighters Story with Jason Sautel
Hosts and PTSI Resilience Trainers John Salerno and Samantha Horwitz talk with Jason Sautel, retired firefighter, author, and speaker on @A Badge of Honor Podcast.Jason Sautel had it all. Confident in his abilities and trusted by his fellow firefighters, he was making a name for himself on the streets of Oakland, California. His adrenaline-fueled job even helped him forget the pain of his childhood—until the day he looked into the eyes of a jumper on the Bay Bridge and came face to face with a darkness he knew would take him down as well. While working as a fireman, Jason began a downward spiral. Jason grew up in Southern Californian where his childhood quickly came to a halt the day his parents divorced when he was eight. He was raised by his father, a Vietnam vet afflicted by the demons of his past. Being a father never came naturally to him, and to say my childhood years were rough would be an understatement. Becoming a decorated firefighter saved Jason's life, but it didn’t save his soul. He continued to walk in the dark, spiraling down into the pain of hopelessness. He was at the end of his rope when a girl entered his life and showed him something he had never seen or felt before.Jason is passionate about helping anyone feeling hopeless see that you always have choices. He loves walking alongside those who are hurting to give them the encouragement and hope they deserve—whether that’s face-to-face or online. Ep 93Ep. 93 Fighting Traumatic Brain Injuries with The Texas Valor Project
Hosts and PTSI Resilience Trainers John Salerno and Samantha Horwitz talk with The Texas Valor Project, on @A Badge of Honor Podcast.Texas Valor Project provides a solution for veterans and first responders who face challenges due to Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). TBI, commonly seen in post 9/11 Veterans, has been significantly overlooked and neglected. Unfortunately, many of the veterans and first responders we’ve assisted over the years have not received proper diagnosis or treatment for their TBI. Instead, they have often been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), leading to prescribed medications as a treatment.Through long-standing partnerships with Dallas area physicians and pharmacies, we tackle both the physiological and chemical challenges that veterans and first responders with TBI encounter. Ep 70Ep. 70 A Holistic Approach to Mental Wellness with Dr. Brooke Bartlett
Hosts and PTSI Resilience Trainers John Salerno and Samantha Horwitz talk with Dr. Brooke Bartlett, CEO of the Center for Trauma, Anxiety, and Stress on @A Badge of Honor Podcast.Brooke is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in working with first responders, military members, and civilians in high stress professions. A major focus of her professional work is promoting first responder wellness by assisting public safety agencies in the creation and implementation of effective mental wellness programs, which means taking a proactive approach, by designing resources intended to keep high-functioning, healthy personnel healthy. Her approach is holistic in that she integrates prevention, early (at-risk) intervention, and crisis intervention resources to ensure an agency’s wellness programming targets the needs of all their personnel. It’s important to remember that mental wellness programming is not “one size fits all”, and there are many factors that determine the best fitting curriculum such as the type of agency, it’s size and location, and it’s budget. Brooke customizes her services for each agency and their unique needs. Brooke serves a variety of public safety agencies, including wildland and structure fire, law enforcement, EMS, and dispatch.
