Forest put in a creditable performance against Reading, but once again we discovered the difference a good striker can make. After Glenn Murray forced Tom Holmes to put through his own net (OG is now the Reds' joint top scorer), Reading were able to turn up the wick in the last twenty minutes. The irrepressible Lucas Joao (probably the best striker in the division this season) caused all kinds of problems, and eventually set up Yakou Meite. Somehow Brice Samba managed to dive out of the way and Reading were back in the game. Only one team were going to win after that, so a point was probably a good result for the Reds in the end. In a scrappy game played in blustery conditions, the Reds put a shift in on their way to victory, which moves them further away from the Championship drop zone. Ryan Yates replaced James Garner in the midfield and it was he who got the crucial breakthrough midway through the second half, turning the ball home after Rotherham failed to clear. There were some questions over whether he was onside and it looked like he might have got away with one! On a night where Forest were again guilty of missing a few opportunities, Yates and Cafu provided industry in the middle of the park, while at the back Joe Worrall and Toby Figuereido were impressive as they kept the Millers at bay. After a great, but pointless performance against Swansea midweek, Forest earned three points that they might not have deserved against Blackburn. In the end they were indebted to Brice Samba for saving Adam Armstrong's penalty, but it shouldn't have come to that - Samba and Knockaert didn't cover themselves in glory when they conceded the spot-kick. It's also worth noting that Forest did have more chances; Knockaert combined well with Murray and had an effort cleared off the line, the veteran striker also could have scored in the first half, and his replacement Lyle Taylor couldn't convert when Cyrus Christie's shot came back off the post. Armstrong had hit the post with a long-ranger in the first half as well, but the key intervention was Alex Mighten's deflected effort - it was a bit lucky, but if you don't shoot... Despite a decent showing in the first half, Freddie Woodman's save from Antony Knockaert meant that Forest once again failed to score; then when Connor Roberts inexplicably out-jumped Sammy Ameobi, we just knew that we were up against it. The second half saw Swansea's back three hold firm, preventing Forest from having any meaningful efforts. We all knew this would be a tough night for the Reds, and so it proved, with Bournemouth proving to be slick, composed and superior in many departments. Phew. Bloody hell. We didn't deserve that did we? Obviously Forest fans were concentrating more on the Reds' fortune than the Sky Blues' pain, but having taken a deserved first-half lead, Forest really played poorly in the second period, allowing Coventry to take control and almost take the points. A draw would have been more than we deserved, but luckily Forest had two players who kept playing until the very end - Joe Lolley's throughball set Lyle Taylor away, and he drew the foul. Of course, there are few cooler customers than Taylor when it comes to spot-kicks, and he duly ambled up to stroke the ball home from twelve yards with the very last kick of the match. If Chris Hughton’s first job was to steady the ship, this match shows that there has been some progress but there is still a lot of work to do, especially in the opposition half. At half-time it looked a bit bleak, and a few Forest fans were rather despondent as the Reds were a goal down and a man down. On the face of it, it was a fair result, but Derby weren't happy after their disallowed goal, which stole the headlines. In truth, the Rams were probably the better team for most of the first half, and the latter stages of the second, but Forest did plug away and deservedly drew level when the excellent Lyle Taylor showed a real striker's instinct (and real eloquence in his post-match interview). Chris Hughton acknowledged that the performance mirrored that against Rotherham, but the talking point for Reds fans was 4-4-2. Grabban and Taylor were paired together in the first half, and the veteran striker's injury probably did Hughton a favour as it enabled the introduction of Anthony Knockaert, who made a great impression in his first Reds appearance. A frustrating evening at the City Ground as Forest played well for a bit, then didn't, but turned up the heat at the end to earn the point - but it could and should have been more. The big talking point was Lewis Grabban's miss when clean through on goal, but our reporter Baz points out that he does a whole load of work for the team, even if it doesn't always look like it. I don't know, in some ways it would have been easier if we had got thumped, then Sabri could have been relieved of his duties and at least the debate would be over. Another defeat, another blank and another bad night at the office for Sabri Lamouchi. It was always going to be the case that the first team to score would win this one, and despite Ben Hamer making good saves from Sammy Ameobi and Loic Mbe Soh, the Reds' night was characterised by the lack of chances created, especially in the second half. This episode could have been called "The Hangover Part 2", as two ludicrously soft goals in the first half gifted the game to Cardiff, and Forest looked just as poor as they had done against Barnsley and QPR. Except there were signs of life as the half-time Lucozade kicked in; the first-half tactical switch that saw Joe Lolley replaced by Lyle Taylor actually paid dividends as the Cardiff defence had more to think about, and the movement and guile of Luke Freeman made more of an impression as he came in from the right hand side, rather than playing as an orthodox number 10. Sure, Cardiff could take their foot off the gas as they probably had the points in the bag already, but Forest looked more energetic, had more forward movement and actually created chances, and at least warmed the gloves of Cardiff's Alex Smithies.
