Ep 52Nottingham Forest 1-1 Reading: The 1865 Match Report
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Forest put in a creditable performance against Reading, but once again we discovered the difference a good striker can make. After Glenn Murray forced Tom Holmes to put through his own net (OG is now the Reds' joint top scorer), Reading were able to turn up the wick in the last twenty minutes. The irrepressible Lucas Joao (probably the best striker in the division this season) caused all kinds of problems, and eventually set up Yakou Meite. Somehow Brice Samba managed to dive out of the way and Reading were back in the game. Only one team were going to win after that, so a point was probably a good result for the Reds in the end. Baz reports on the match, and is joined by Alex from the Elm Park Royals podcast to dissect the match and the prospects for both teams this season. Like what you hear? Ep 51Watford 1-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Another disappointing defeat in which the Reds barely got a sight of the opposition goal, and Chris Hughton sounded downbeat afterwards. The Maradona of the Midlands gives his take on Forest's failure at Watford, and then Rich Ferraro is joined by Mike Duffy from the Voices of the Vic podcast, to get the view from the opposition; Mike is despondent about his own team, but is also surprised at how poor Forest are, particularly going forward. Ep 50Nottingham Forest 0-1 Luton Town: The 1865 Match Report
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. A really disappointing night for the Reds, as they dominated proceedings for an hour, before the inevitable smash and grab. Forest had more than enough chances to win the match, with Anthony Knockaert once again threatening, and Simon Sluga making decent saves from Glenn Murray and James Garner, amongst others. Chris Hughton was his usual mild-mannered self after the match, but admitted to being disappointed. We hear from our correspondent Baz, and then Rich Ferraro is joined by Luton Town fan Ryan McCole, for a discussion about chances, saves, and Luton and Forest's hopes of mid-table obscurity. Ep 49Processes and outcomes: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast, February 2021
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. In this bumper podcast, Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz, Steven Toplis and Tom Newton, to discuss all the action from the last month: Racism in football: after Colin Kazim-Richards received abuse after the Derby match, we discuss whether there are any solutions The local derby: ok, so it wasn't one for the neutrals, but Forest really should have won it, shouldn't they? Forest's upturn in form: the Reds could even have gone into the top half of the table at the weekend! Transfers and midfield magic: Garner! Cafu! Krovinovic! Knockaert! Chris Hughton's philosophy: his focus on processes, as much as outcomes Jeremy Davies also gives us a history lesson about Forest's record goalscorer, and we play our quiz: Guess That Red! Ep 48Derby County 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Before the match many Reds fans would have taken a point, but after a dominant display, Forest were once again left to rue a lack of clear opportunities on goal. James Garner's first-half effort should have been saved by David Marshall, but after the goal the Reds were very much on top, until Colin Kazim-Richards found a second-half equaliser out of almost nowhere. After that it was frantic stuff and Derby will feel that they have the better chances, but Forest kept plugging away and retain the Brian Clough Trophy. Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands and special guests Cory and Jason from the Rams Review Podcast, to discuss the evening's big talking points. Like what you hear? Ep 47Rotherham United 0-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Forest made it back-to-back wins and clean sheets as they secured all three points at Rotherham. In a scrappy game played in blustery conditions, the Reds put a shift in on their way to victory, which moves them further away from the Championship drop zone. Ryan Yates replaced James Garner in the midfield and it was he who got the crucial breakthrough midway through the second half, turning the ball home after Rotherham failed to clear. There were some questions over whether he was onside and it looked like he might have got away with one! On a night where Forest were again guilty of missing a few opportunities, Yates and Cafu provided industry in the middle of the park, while at the back Joe Worrall and Toby Figuereido were impressive as they kept the Millers at bay. Matt from The Rotherham United Podcast joins us to discuss the game and we also hear the views of Baz, as he reflects on a well-earned three points in South Yorkshire. Like what you hear? Ep 46Nottingham Forest 1-0 Blackburn Rovers: The 1865 Match Report
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. After a great, but pointless performance against Swansea midweek, Forest earned three points that they might not have deserved against Blackburn. In the end they were indebted to Brice Samba for saving Adam Armstrong's penalty, but it shouldn't have come to that - Samba and Knockaert didn't cover themselves in glory when they conceded the spot-kick. It's also worth noting that Forest did have more chances; Knockaert combined well with Murray and had an effort cleared off the line, the veteran striker also could have scored in the first half, and his replacement Lyle Taylor couldn't convert when Cyrus Christie's shot came back off the post. Armstrong had hit the post with a long-ranger in the first half as well, but the key intervention was Alex Mighten's deflected effort - it was a bit lucky, but if you don't shoot... Baz reports after a good three points for the Reds. Like what you hear? Subscribe via your podcast provider, and please leave a review, as it helps other Forest supporters find our content. Ep 45Swansea City 1-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Forest travelled to high-flying Swansea looking to avenge their January FA Cup drubbing and put in a much-improved performance against the Swans. Lewis Grabban and Anthony Knockaert missed their opportunities to give the Reds the lead and, in the end, it was Forest who fell agonisingly to a late Connor Roberts header to return from South Wales empty handed. Steven is joined by Tom from TotalSwansTV to discuss the game, including the performance of Chris Hughton's side, the improvement since that FA Cup meeting a few weeks ago, the spurning of several key chances and examine if the match has been typical of the way Swansea have performed this season. Ep 44Nottingham Forest 0-0 AFC Bournemouth: The 1865 Forest Ramble
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. The headlines will say that Forest held Bournemouth, and the Cherries may well have been the better team, but the Reds actually came closest to taking the lead on more than one occasion. Rich and Baz discuss the game, including: defensive resolve; the impact of new signings Krovinovic, Garner and Murrary; the lack of substitutions from Chris Hughton - was this the right thing to do? Also we discuss how the Reds have quietly started to look more like a Championship team, after a disastrous first half of the season, and the symbolism of getting a point against a team in the top six - will this give the team a confidence boost ahead of a tricky away match at Swansea? Ep 43Wycombe Wanderers 0-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Forest were aiming to put more distance between themselves and the bottom three as they travelled to lowly Wycombe and Chris Hughton's side put in a commanding display to return from Adams Park with all three points. Glenn Murray caught the eye as he netted his first two goals in a Red shirt, the first an instinctive lob from just outside the penalty area and the second from the penalty spot after being felled in the area. Anthony Knockaert the scored the third as he tucked away Joe Lolley's ball into the box to wrap up a strong team performance. Steven reflects on the win that moves the Reds four points clear of danger and takes their recent run of form to just one defeat in the last 10, on an afternoon where Murray, Knockaert and James Garner all impressed and Lolley looked more like his old self. Ep 421865 Forest Ramble: Transfer Window Special
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. In this bonus podcast we look back on the Coventry match but focus upon the transfer window. Host Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis, Tom Newton and Nottingham-based football journalist George Harbey, who has followed Forest throughout the season and joins us on loan: Hello to Krovinovic, Garner and Murray Farewell to Darikwa, Clough, Guerrero Have Forest managed to address the deficiencies in midfield? Will Nicolas Ioannou return? The future for the Forest players who are out of contract this summer We also have a chat with Brighton fan Rick Loosemore to ask what Glenn Murray can bring to the Forest team, and whether Chris Hughton is still the right man for the job, despite a shaky season so far. Ep 41Nottingham Forest 0-0 Barnsley: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. After the heavy FA Cup exit at Swansea, Forest were looking to bounce back as they faced Barnsley at The City Ground. What followed was not a classic, as Chris Hughton's Reds picked up a point against a hard-working, energetic Tykes side. The vistors saw a big penalty shout waved away in the first half, while Lewis Grabban spurned a big chance that could've been the difference on the day. Baz speaks to Carlo from Barnsley podcast The Reds Report to mull over the events of the 90 minutes, including the performance of the two teams, the standard of officiating and look at how Forest and Barnsley will fare after this draw. Ep 40'Stuck between two managers' - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast, January 2021
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. As 2020 turned into 2021, Forest embarked on a seven-match unbeaten run, pulling themselves away from the Championship relegation zone as well as progressing into the 4th Round of the FA Cup. However, two defeats in four days, including a disappointing cup exit at Swansea, have seen some concerns resurface. Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis, Baz and Tom Newton, where they discuss that heavy cup defeat in South Wales, a lack of streetwise smarts from the Reds and ask if Forest are suffering from a crisis of confidence. Also, the team looks into how Chris Hughton can turn the team's fortunes around and pick their moments that sum up Forest's season so far. Like what you hear? Ep 39Nottingham Forest 1-2 Middlesbrough: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. The Reds' recent unbeaten run came to an end in disappointing fashion, as the level of performance rarely got out of first gear against a Middlesbrough team who used their Warnockisms to good effect. Despite Loic Mbe Soh's late goal, any faint glimmer of hope extinguished when Yuri Ribeiro lost his head (he wasn't the only one) and got a red card. We are joined by Phil Spencer from Bonkers For Boro to discuss mind games, performance levels and surly striker-skippers. Like what you hear? Ep 38Nottingham Forest 3-1 Millwall: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Following successful FA Cup exploits the week before, Forest and Millwall returned to league action at The City Ground and it was the Reds who came out on top. They put in an impressive all-round team performance to secure a 3-1 win; two goals from Sammy Ameobi and one from Ryan Yates giving Forest a deserved three points. We are joined by Henry Morgan from Millwall fan podcast No-One Likes Us Talkin', to discuss the result, the performance of both the Reds and Lions and reflect on where the teams' fortunes are at the halfway point of the season. Ep 37Nottingham Forest 1-0 Cardiff City (FA Cup Third Round): 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
An early goal from Lyle Taylor was just about the only goalmouth action in this tight affair between two teams who created little. However, there are signs that this is becoming a Chris Hughton team, with Joe Worrall and Scott McKenna looking strong at the back, although the midfield again lacked spark and creativity. We are joined by Ben Price from the View From The Ninian podcast, who offers his opinion on the similarities between the Bluebirds and the Reds, notably a lack of cutting edge; Ben predicts a season of mid-table safety/mediocrity (delete as applicable) for both teams. Ep 36Preston North End 0 - 1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Forest got their 2021 off to the best possible start by picking up a crucial 1-0 victory at Preston North End. Despite the home side hitting the bar twice, Forest put in a strong team display to return from Deepdale with all three points, courtesy of Lewis Grabban's second half penalty after Cafu's shot was blocked by a Preston hand. The win moves the Reds three points clear of the Championship drop zone and extends their unbeaten run to five matches. Manager Chris Hughton was understandably delighted with the result and in our match report, we reflect on a big three points gained on the road. Like what you hear? Ep 35Stoke City 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. After making it three games without defeat with the draw against Birmingham City on Boxing Day, Forest continued their Christmas programme with a Tuesday night trip to Stoke City. The Reds fell behind in the first half after some poor defending which seemed to sum up Forest's 2020 in a nutshell but fought back in the second, forcing an own goal to level the scores. Chris Hughton's team might even have claimed all three points had Cafu put away an opportunity that had been gifted to him by some generous home defending. We are joined by Dave from Stoke City fan podcast Wizards of Drivel to discuss the result, the performances of both Stoke and Forest and how the game was viewed by the Potters supporters. Ep 34Nottingham Forest 0-0 Birmingham City: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. Forest have been known to serve up their fair share of Boxing Day drama down the years. This year, however, was a different tale. The Reds saw a familiar face return to The City Ground in the form of ex-gaffer Aitor Karanka, now in charge of Birmingham City and the Spaniard saw his side head back across the Midlands with a clean sheet and a share of the spoils. The game wasn't a classic, with neither team looking likely to win it. Despite that, Forest did have some chances, most notably Ryan Yates and Tobias Figueiredo, who saw their efforts saved by Neil Etheridge. 26 years after a similarly uneventful Boxing Day stalemate, Rich Ferraro reflects as Forest were left to rue missed opportunities, after failing to put away a Blues team who were content with a point. Chris Hughton made some positive substitutions in the second half and he will have seen small signs of progress to build on as the New Year approaches. Like what you hear? Ep 33"It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid..." The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast, December 2020
The 1865 Forest Ramble is part of the Fan Hub Network - where fans come first. After a really turbulent and difficult run of defeats, Forest have just managed to pull out a win and a draw to give us a faint glimmer of hope as we head into the Christmas period. However, even the opposition fans have been telling us that Forest aren't performing that badly, but conceding soft goals and failing to create chances isn't going to get you results. Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis, Baz and the Maradona Of The Midlands to discuss whether the bad results tell the whole story, and whether Chris Hughton needs more new players in the January transfer window. We also return to the impact of Covid - whether it has affected the unity of the squad and how much the Reds have missed having supporters in the stand. Like what you hear? Ep 32The 1865 Forest Ramble meets: NFFC Supporters' Trust
In the second of our long-form podcasts this week, we meet the Chair of the Nottingham Forest Supporters' Trust, Elliott Stanley, to discuss what the Trust are for, what they do, and how they interact with the club. We also speak to founder member Tom Newton, to hear how the whole thing started, at a time when fans felt alienated during the Fawaz regime. Elliott and Tom tell us about what the Trust can and cannot do, and respond to accusations from some fans that the Trust is simply a mouthpiece for the club. Like what you hear? Ep 31It's Tricky To Talk: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
In this special podcast, we speak to Bethany Didsbury who received a shirt from Nottingham Forest in recognition of her contribution to the NFFC Tricky Hub. Beth candidly discusses her story, from spotting the club's "It's Tricky To Talk" campaign, and plucking up the courage to visit the Tricky Hub. You can read Beth's story on her blog. We hear from Beth about the work of the NFFC Community Trust in supporting fans with mental health disorders and illnesses; although the campaign was targeted towards men (who may otherwise suffer in silence), they welcome everyone. Ep 30Millwall 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
After both sides got their first victory in ages in midweek, it was important to pick up another result straightaway; while the Reds might not have got three points, they showed some of the fight and desire that was missing earlier in the season. Alex Mighten's first senior goal was a good reward, despite the concession of another soft goal. We are joined by Henry Morgan from Millwall fan podcast No-One Likes Us Talkin', to discuss the result, the performances, and to continue the ongoing debate about how much the players miss the fans. Ep 29Nottingham Forest 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Three points? Remember them? A good night for Forest, albeit against the worst team in the division. An early goal from Yuri Ribeiro and a (controversial) late one from the returning Lewis Grabban secured a much-needed victory for the Reds after an awful run of defeats. Baz reports on a night where Alex Mighten and Loic Mbe Soh finally started, and Cafu exerted some forward-facing impetus. Let's not get carried away, but we hope that the team, the manager and the fans can feel a little more positive before visiting an empty Den on Saturday. Like what you hear? Ep 28Nottingham Forest 1-3 Brentford: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Another match, another defeat. The results are awful, and some fans are laying the blame at whoever they can - players, managers, CEO/owner, each other. However, after an awful first half (and another cheap goal conceded), Forest actually gave Brentford something to think about, just as they did against Norwich and Watford. You might not believe it, but there are signs of life. We were once again asked to appear on Talksport2 to share our thoughts about the situation at the City Ground, and we are also joined by Billy Grant from Brentford podcast Beesotted, for a review of the match and a summary of Forest's hopes for the rest of the season. Ep 27The 1865 Forest Ramble: what is wrong at the City Ground?
Earlier in the week, we were asked to contribute to a couple of shows to talk about Forest's awful season (and year) so far. Firstly, hear Rich Ferraro in conversation with Ryan Dilks and Justin Peach from the Second Tier Podcast, discussing the Reading game, but more importantly, the bigger picture as to why Forest are doing so badly. Then we cut to Monday's discussion with Talksport2, discussing the form and confidence of the players, whether Chris Hughton is a good appointment as manager, and whether there are potentially wider issues affecting the club. Ep 26Norwich 2-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Yet another defeat for Forest as this awful run of hard games continues. However, the Reds at least looked a bit more competitive, and they managed to score for the first time in ages, albeit via a fortuitous cross from Antony Knockaert that went straight in (right now, we'll take what we can get). We are joined by our very own Baz, with a Forest fan's perspective, and by Norwich City supporter Tyrone Bradford, who shares his thoughts on the match, on Chris Hughton, and Forest's prospects for the season. Ep 25The 1865 Forest Ramble meets: David Phillips!
Yes, THAT David Phillips! Steven Toplis and the Maradona of the Midlands have an illuminating chat with the ex-Forest midfielder, who tells us about Frank Clark, winning Player of the Year as we got promotion, the Premier League and playing in Europe. David also tells us about his upbringing, playing in the 1987 FA Cup Final, and his experiences as an international right back despite playing left wing for Norwich. We also uncover exactly why a player we signed as a winger ended up playing as a defensive midfielder under Frank Clark, and freezing his bits off whilst wearing a dress. Like what you hear? Ep 24Reading 2-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Another blank for Forest, and another game in which they gave the opponents a head start. Reading had a great start to the season and are still ruthless in front of goal, so it wasn't a great idea to give Lucas Joao a free shot from 12 yards, and playing three-quarters of the match with ten men. We are joined by Alex from the Elm Park Royals podcast, who shares his opinions on Reading's firepower, Forest's lack of creativity, and the importance of fans returning to matches. Ep 23No chance! Nottingham Forest 0-0 Watford - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
A match of few chances, but a more solid performance meant that Reds fans could focus on some positives, such as the return of Joe Worrall, a better performance from Toby Figueiredo, and also the full debut of Cafu (not that one). We are joined by Mike from the Voices Of The Vic podcast to discuss the match and whether it would have made any difference if fans had been in the ground - especially with regard to the referee's decision to spare Nathaniel Chalobah from an early bath. Ep 23Confidence and composure: Nottingham Forest 0-1 Swansea City - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Despite a decent showing in the first half, Freddie Woodman's save from Antony Knockaert meant that Forest once again failed to score; then when Connor Roberts inexplicably out-jumped Sammy Ameobi, we just knew that we were up against it. The second half saw Swansea's back three hold firm, preventing Forest from having any meaningful efforts. It all boils down to composure; Knockaert could have done better with his first half effort, and all over the pitch, the Forest players seemed to want an extra half-second or another touch. After a reasonable first month at the helm, Chris Hughton must be wondering how to get the players feeling confident again, with a tough run of games coming up. Like what you hear? Ep 21Forest fruitless against the Cherries: AFC Bournemouth 2-0 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
We all knew this would be a tough night for the Reds, and so it proved, with Bournemouth proving to be slick, composed and superior in many departments. Forest weren't entirely hopeless, but the concession of soft goals at the start of each half gave them too much to do, and even when Bournemouth took their foot off the gas, the Reds struggled to test Asmir Begovic in the Cherries' goal. The Maradona Of The Midlands reports on a harsh lesson for Chris Hughton's men, which only proved to demonstrate that there is a lot of work for the Reds' players and manager to do to make Forest a competitive force this season. Ep 20Missed chances: Barnsley 2-0 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
A decent away performance from Forest, but they left with nothing after two late goals gave Barnsley the points. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to wrap up the game, with Barnsley hitting the woodwork three times and Jak Walton earning his money to outfox Miguel Guerrero and deny Lyle Taylor. We are joined by Carlo from the Barnsley podcast The Reds Report (@RedsReport_), to look back over the key moments in the game, including missed chances, substitutions and teamwork. We also discuss both teams' prospects for the rest of the season, including Carlo's thoughts about Chris Hughton's Forest. Like what you hear? Ep 19The 1865 Forest Ramble meets: George Harbey! Part 2
Once again, we welcome football journalist, Forest correspondent and local boy George Harbey to the podcast. In part 2 of our conversation, George tells us more about the ups and downs of football journalism, and being embedded at Forest. What was it like reporting on the demise and departure of Sabri Lamouchi, and what it's like being at the City Ground without fans - is the job made even harder when no-one can see the game in person? Also, what difference does social media and 24/7 reporting make to the life of a football journalist? Like what you hear? Ep 17"Lyle Taylor: what a guy!" The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast, November 2020
A tough first month for Chris Hughton, with no fewer than seven games; but the Reds' record has improved from P4 L4, with the new gaffer overseeing three wins, three draws and a solitary defeat at miserly Middlesbrough. Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis, Baz, the Maradona of the Midlands and new contributor Tom Newton; your intrepid podcast team discuss Hughton's impact, improvements at both ends of the pitch, and whether the Reds have missed having fans in the stadium. Wait, there's more - there is still time to cram in the unsuccessful pursuit of Kamil Grosicky (and whether So Solid Crew would have had something to say about it), the governance of Forest by the Greek ownership, and a special mention for new striker Lyle Taylor - what a guy! Ep 16Out of jail: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Coventry City - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Phew. Bloody hell. We didn't deserve that did we? Obviously Forest fans were concentrating more on the Reds' fortune than the Sky Blues' pain, but having taken a deserved first-half lead, Forest really played poorly in the second period, allowing Coventry to take control and almost take the points. A draw would have been more than we deserved, but luckily Forest had two players who kept playing until the very end - Joe Lolley's throughball set Lyle Taylor away, and he drew the foul. Of course, there are few cooler customers than Taylor when it comes to spot-kicks, and he duly ambled up to stroke the ball home from twelve yards with the very last kick of the match. Lucky lucky Forest, but now comes the hard part - building on the result and restoring fragile confidence. Like what you hear? Ep 15Playing catch-up: Middlesbrough 1-0 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
If Chris Hughton’s first job was to steady the ship, this match shows that there has been some progress but there is still a lot of work to do, especially in the opposition half. There were never going to be too many chances in this match, but Forest really struggled in the second half against a Boro side with a four-month head start on them, in terms of organisation, playing culture and style. Hughton is obviously working on Forest’s soft centre, but there is still more to be done, and the next problem is to get the team to create chances. Like what you hear? Ep 14Reds' endeavour: Luton Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
At half-time it looked a bit bleak, and a few Forest fans were rather despondent as the Reds were a goal down and a man down. Whatever the arguments about Nicolas Ioannou's red card, the inescapable fact was that Forest were down to ten men and would need to find a way to get a result. There were also a few wags commenting that Forest players couldn't see each other in the grey camo kit... It was rather pleasing to know that Forest could find a level of performance and resilience that was lacking over the last few months, and although it took an own goal from Glenn Rea, it was just reward for Forest knocking on the door. Nathan Jones bemoaned that his team failed to finish the game off, but Chris Hughton was happy with the Reds' endeavour. Like what you hear? Ep 13It's a Knockaert: Nottingham Forest 1-1 Derby County - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
On the face of it, it was a fair result, but Derby weren't happy after their disallowed goal, which stole the headlines. In truth, the Rams were probably the better team for most of the first half, and the latter stages of the second, but Forest did plug away and deservedly drew level when the excellent Lyle Taylor showed a real striker's instinct (and real eloquence in his post-match interview). Chris Hughton acknowledged that the performance mirrored that against Rotherham, but the talking point for Reds fans was 4-4-2. Grabban and Taylor were paired together in the first half, and the veteran striker's injury probably did Hughton a favour as it enabled the introduction of Anthony Knockaert, who made a great impression in his first Reds appearance. Skillful, tricky, with the ability to scare defenders, the Frenchman could potentially be a key figure for Forest as they hope to start climbing the table. Like what you hear? Ep 12"Everyone's going to miss a sitter now and then": Nottingham Forest 1-1 Rotherham United - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
A frustrating evening at the City Ground as Forest played well for a bit, then didn't, but turned up the heat at the end to earn the point - but it could and should have been more. The big talking point was Lewis Grabban's miss when clean through on goal, but our reporter Baz points out that he does a whole load of work for the team, even if it doesn't always look like it. Grabban also managed to almost score with a much harder chance and was involved in the equaliser for man-of-the-match Sammy Ameobi. Overall, four points out of six wasn't bad from these two games, even if they didn't come the way we expected. Like what you hear? Ep 11Hughton masterclass: Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
It wasn't a classic, but no-one really minds do they? When the scoreline starts with "Blackburn nil" it was always going to be an improvement. True, Rovers were missing some of their wise old heads, particularly in the middle of the park, but Forest managed to look more solid, with special mentions for Toby Figueiredo and Ryan Yates. Of course the icing on the cake was Forest's push in the last fifteen minutes, which saw Sammy Ameobi hit the post before Joe Lolleh's late strike took a deflection and gave the Reds a late winner. We are joined by Dirk from Blackburn Roverseas, who shares his views on what went wrong for Rovers, why he feared the new manager bounce, and what it is like to be live-streaming when your team concede in the 90th minute. Ep 10Chris Hughton: a Brighton fan's view
With new manager Chris Hughton preparing for his first match in charge of Nottingham Forest, we speak to Brighton fan (and resident of Newcastle) Rick Loosemore. We discuss tactics, formations and style of play, and whether we can expect to see Forest play with inverted wingers and two upfront. Rick also gives us an insight into Hughton's popularity on the south coast and in the north east, and confirms the old mantra that if you get rid of your manager, you need to replace him with someone better; Brighton feel as though they have achieved that, but other clubs (including Newcastle) have struggled to improve post-Hughton. Ep 9The 1865 Forest Ramble meets: Big Wes!
Well that has been another turbulent week for #nffc fans, hasn't it? In the spirit of Monty Python (ask your parents/grandparents, kids), "Now for something completely different..." We speak to North America's Nottingham Forest superfan, Big Wes Hall, to hear the story of how a case of mistaken identity on social media led to him discovering soccer (sorry) and become ever-so-slightly obsessed with the Reds. Wes tells us what he loves about British football culture, and the differences between US and English fans. We also hear how Wes has started learning some of the Nottingham dialect, why he loves Ryan Yates and what happened when Big Wes met the other Big Wes. Like what you hear? Ep 8Sabri sacked, Hughton hired: 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast Special
Things hadn't been right for some time, had they? Even before lockdown, the legs had gone, the poor January transfer window hindered the manager and then everything crumbled in lockdown. What seemed like promising recruitment quickly became insane, with sooooo many new signings, and in the meantime the manager had signed a new contract and recruited new backroom staff. Just another year in the life of Nottingham Forest... Our podcasters digest the departure of Sabri Lamouchi and ponder over the new gaffer's chances of success - he certainly has the pedigree, but does his status as Manager (rather than Head Coach) signify a change in football operations? Anyway, we praise the appointment of Chris Hughton and welcome the new gaffer to Nottingham. Like what you hear? Ep 7"I just don't know what they are doing": 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast, October 2020
We bring you a bumper podcast this month, as there is just so much to talk about: #nffc's poor results have kept the focus on Sabri's future We discuss results and performances - is there a glimmer of hope? If keeping the manager was supposed to ensure stability, what message does it send to sign a whole new team? Does the club actually have a strategy? We also welcome back Jeremy Davies for an episode of Pointless (East Midlands football edition), and have a new feature from our newest squad member, Tom Newton. As if that wasn't enough, we close the podcast with mentions of Sam Allardyce and a stark b*llock naked Tony Pulis. Like what you hear? Ep 6(Col)back from the brink? Forest 1-2 Bristol City - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
I don't know, in some ways it would have been easier if we had got thumped, then Sabri could have been relieved of his duties and at least the debate would be over. As it is, despite another defeat, Forest might have done just enough to earn M Lamouchi a reprieve for a couple of weeks at least. The headlines are that Forest are still winless and pointless, but at least Luke Freeman scored a goal to perk up the Reds players, fans and manager. Unfortunately this came after Forest once again gifted two soft goals to the opposition, and if you give an in-form team a two goal head start, we all know how it is likely to end. Baz reports on a game where Forest at last gave the opposition keeper something to do. Ep 5The Hangover Part III: Huddersfield 1-0 Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast
Another defeat, another blank and another bad night at the office for Sabri Lamouchi. It was always going to be the case that the first team to score would win this one, and despite Ben Hamer making good saves from Sammy Ameobi and Loic Mbe Soh, the Reds' night was characterised by the lack of chances created, especially in the second half. In this special match report, we are joined by the Maradona of the Midlands and Kosi from Huddersfield Town podcast And He Takes That Chance, to review all the night's action. We reflect upon those saves by Hamer, that goal by Fraizer Campbell, and thank the Lord that Adama Bloody Diakhaby didn't score. We also hear an interesting story about that first minute challenge by Jonathan Hogg on Harry Arter - it should have been a red card for the Terriers' skipper, but it sounds like there was some history behind it. In the meantime, Forest lick their wounds and seek a glimmer of hope - we can't find one either. Like what you hear? Ep 4Finding the dressing room: Forest 0-2 Cardiff - the 1865 Forest Ramble
This episode could have been called "The Hangover Part 2", as two ludicrously soft goals in the first half gifted the game to Cardiff, and Forest looked just as poor as they had done against Barnsley and QPR. Except there were signs of life as the half-time Lucozade kicked in; the first-half tactical switch that saw Joe Lolley replaced by Lyle Taylor actually paid dividends as the Cardiff defence had more to think about, and the movement and guile of Luke Freeman made more of an impression as he came in from the right hand side, rather than playing as an orthodox number 10. Sure, Cardiff could take their foot off the gas as they probably had the points in the bag already, but Forest looked more energetic, had more forward movement and actually created chances, and at least warmed the gloves of Cardiff's Alex Smithies. Still no goals, and still no points, so there's a long way to go; but the second half performance may have helped the confidence of players, manager and supporters. Like what you hear?
