(#THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY) #WWII #Navy #Enterprise #Yorktown #History #Midway By May of 1942 Germany had occupied Europe and was attempting to bomb England into submission. Japan had attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor just months before and had sacked the Phillipines , brutally killing over 10,000 surrendered soldiers and civilians. With half of the United States fleet damaged or sunk, Japan controlled the Pacific. Knowing that the US needed to keep a base at the tiny island of Midway, Yamamoto made plans to attack it, knowing the weakened US Fleet would have to respond, and in so doing, Yamamoto, with many more ships and superior aircraft, would destroy them. But Admiral Nimitz, planning the American response, had his own surprise planned for Yamamoto. Before 1942, naval warfare was fought by battleships and submarines. The Coral Sea and Midway battles, pitting carrier fleet against carrier fleet, proved beyond the shadow of doubt the power, range, and effectiveness of the aircraft carrier, and changed naval warfare and warfare forever. Jesse James was an American outlaw who rode for Bloody Bill Anderson's bushwhackers and Quantrill's Raiders before, during, and after the Civil War., As a guerilla raider Jesse and his brother Frank took part in the brutal slayings of hundreds of unarmed civilians as well as surrendered union soldiers. As an outlaw after the Civil War, the James brothers and the gangs they organized were responsible for dozens of bank, train, and stagecoach robberies during which unarmed civilians were shot down in cold blood. Friendly newspaper reporting that was sympathetic to the pro-slavery south portrayed them as heroes and robin hood types-although no documentation exists that proves they ever gave to the poor. Rumors persist today that contrary to the accepted fact that Bob Ford shot and killed Jesse James (alias then was Howard) from behind in April of 1882, another man, Wood Hite, a cousin of James, was the one who was buried, and that Jesse James lived a long and prosperous life in Texas under an assumed name. Two great stories from the old west! 1) THE LEGEND OF THE LOST SUBLETT MINE They thought Old Ben Sublett was crazy when he rolled into the town of Odessa Texas and persisted in saying that one day he would come back from his weeks of prospecting in the Guadalupes with a wagon full of gold. Those mountains were full of Apaches and rattlesnakes- but not gold. They had no idea that Old Ben had been a Texas Ranger and won medals fighting for the Confederacy.- and when he said he could do something he was more than talk. 2) THE BLACK SEMINOLE SCOUTS OF TEXAS- Their people had been driven out of Florida to a barren wasteland in the Midwest, then cheated out of what they were promised. Mexico offered them land and freedom if they would just fight Apaches and Comanches who were raiding across the US border- so they migrated to Mexico. But politics changed, and Mexico didn't keep their promises either.. Finally, the US Army offered more promises- join us as Indian scouts and you'll get property, pay, and your families will be fed. After four them won the Medal of Honor for valor they still found themselves fighting for what they had been promised, but no one would ever question their bravery. CALLING ALL FANS.. In 1942, the United States, still reeling from the Japanese surprise attack on our naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, needed to show Japan that they were not invincible. Jimmy Doolittle led a fleet of 16 bombers on a successful raid over Tokyo- 13 of those crews managed to crash land safely in China -but a handful of American pilot were captured and kept in Japanese prisons where they were starved and tortured.. The US authorities believed they were all dead. After the fall of Japan in 1945, the American Secret Service was amazed to find 4 survivors from the 1942 Doolittle Raid being held in a remote Japanese prison. When the war trials began- an unexpected courtroom drama took place as the American prosecution and the defense tore into each other- forever raising the question of why a civilized society needs to defend a barbaric aggressor at all. In 1425 France was reeling from decades of war with with England and almost all hope was gone, The French people, never giving up hope, found solace in an old prophecy that had come from centuries ago. The incredible story of the discovery of a $60 billion dollar (estimated) treasure which was discovered by a husband and wife while camping at Victorio Peak New Mexico, Before they could retrieve more than a small portion, the US Government claimed the land as part of White Sands Missile Range and began removing the treasure without consulting the claim owners.. The Oak Island Money Pit- definitely one of North America's greatest unsolved mysteries and the subject of a long running show on The History Channel- is said to contain a treasure of unknown magnitude- but what that treasure is made up of is uncertain. The day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, destroying most of the American Pacific Fleet, they attacked the US Air Bases in the Philippines. Despite being warned 9 hours ahead of time, all our planes were on the ground when Japanese bombers and fighter planes appeared there,and in one hour the United States had lost its air power in Asia. The Japanese could now invade MacArthur's forces in the Philippines without fear of reprisal from the air,and his 78,000 men were placed in a losing battle against superior forces when the invasion came.. They fought bravely until their strength wore out- 90 days of continuous fighting, malaria, dehydration,and starvation finally did the trick. Then their commander surrendered them to the Japanese, who imprisoned them,and when the US finally returned 3 years later, only 500 men remained. The largest American military cemetery in the world outside of the US resides in Manila, where 78,000 American soldiers gave up their lives. In the weeks that followed the invasion and subsequent destruction of a large swath of the US Navy at Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, the western coastal states in the US were understandably suffering a case of nerves, not knowing if Japan was going to strike mainland US. Sightings were reported, and coastal batteries were placed on alert. A Japanese sub actually strafed a fuel depot at Elwood on the California coast, and the next evening something reported to be either a fleet of planes or balloons was spotted, and antiaircraft guns all up and down the coast of California started firing. When the Japanese nation began their war in Asia and the Pacific in 1937, they also began the systematic looting of every country they conquered- a looting which lasted through 1944, and which collected what some researchers believe was the largest sum of stolen property ever amassed in the history of man. Everything from money to gold and silver to precious jewels to religious artifacts was taken from national treasuries, museums, banks, personal collections, and more, and shipped to a collection point in Singapore- then secreted to hiding places for later recovery. When Japanese merchant ships loaded with stolen treasure began to be sunk by allied planes and submarines- Japan needed a safer destination- and General Yamashita in the Phillipines offered a solution. Billions of dollars worth of gold bars and priceless artifacts were sent to him to hide in caverns and tunnels, and usually the prisoners who helped to dig the tunnels and pits and transport the bullion were killed. But legend persisted in the Philippines about buried loot and one man found it. His name was Rogerio Roxas. But when the corrupt president Marcos caught wind of that find, the end was in sight for Roxas, and Marcos was on his way to becoming the wealthiest man on Earth. In 1859, as America teetered on the edge of a civil war, Washington DC was a swirling mix of political tension and reckless partying and social life. Congressman Dan Sickles and his beautiful young wife were among the most popular party hosts in the city, until Congressman Sickles discovered that his best friend, US District Attorney Philip Barton Key, the dashing son of Francis Scott Key, had been having an affair for the past year with Sickle's wife Teresa. When Sickles saw Key outside his home in Lafayette Park using a handkerchief signal to invite her to their trysting place- he flew into a rage, grabbed three pistols, walked out into the park, and shot and mortally wounded Key. The news of the murder and trial shook the world, and became the most publicized American murder of the century. Join us as we talk to author Chris de Rose about this little known true story. In Tombstone Arizona in 1881, tensions are mounting between two divided factions, the "cowboys" connected to the Clantons and Mclaurys, and the law= meaning the Earps and Doc Holliday, supported by the townspeople and businesses.
