First- my apologies to Wisconsinites for my pronunciation of Peshtigo, which should see an accent on "Pesh"., not "Ti" as I have done. I relied totally upon visual research and not audio. The story: On October 8, 1871, an area of Northeastern Wisconsin half again the size of New Hampshire was utterly destroyed by a cyclonic wildfire which was being driven by winds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Somewhere between 1500 and 3,000 people were killed, and the damage to farms, homes, and livestock was beyond measure. Twelve communities were literally wiped out. The little town of Peshtigo suffered the most fatalities. On that same day, far away from Peshitgo, a cow kicked over a lantern in Mrs. O'Leary's barn in Chicago, starting a conflagration that destroyed most of that city. It was Chicago that received all the headlines- yet the Peshtigo fire still stands and America;s deadliest fire ever. This includes the eyewitness account of the Catholic pastor Father Perrin- whose account served as the basis for the handful of articles and books that followed. A swashbuckling adventure for all ages! PART I—"THE OLD BUCCANEER" An old sailor, calling himself "the captain," real name Billy Bones, comes to lodge at the Admiral Benbow Inn on the West English coast during the mid-18th-century, paying the innkeeper's son, Jim Hawkins, a few pennies to keep a lookout for Long John Silver "a one-legged seafaring man." A former shipmate with intact legs, but lacking two fingers, shows up to confront Billy about sharing his treasure map. After running the stranger off in a violent fight, Billy, who drinks far too much rum, has a stroke and tells Jim that his former shipmates covet his map to buried treasure. After a visit from an evil blind man named Pew who gives him "the black spot" as a summons to share the treasure map, Billy has another stroke and dies; Next week: Jim and his mother (his father has also died just a few days before) unlock the sea chest, finding some money, a journal, and the map. The local physician, Dr. Livesey and the district squire, Trelawney, deduce that the map is of the island where a deceased pirate, Captain Flint buried his treasure. When Sewickley Academy History professor Mike Caesario contacted 1001 and asked if we could participate in their annual chapter studies on Yellow Journalism we jumped at the chance-and agreed to pick a winner from the essays and read it on our show. The entries were all excellent and provided thesis statements and supporting examples from the story of William Randolph Hearst's attempts to sway public opinion against Spain by disseminating non-facts regarding the explosion of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor in order to foment a war- as well as confirming the need to get both sides of every story in the news.. Hearst and Pulitzer were locked in a battle for dominance in the newspaper industry and their continual display of journalistic malfeasance came to head during this crisis. Part two-Led by Claire Chennault, the Flying Tigers were a group of American pilots who originally signed as mercenaries for China in 1941 to fight Japanese aggression in China and Burma. Chennault had worked to build China's air force since 1937 when the Japanese invaded China and seized Shanghai and Nanking, but finally received help from FDR in 1941 in the form of planes and pilots. Chennault had the answer for the fast Japanese Zero plane- but it would take training and discipline to make sure his men learned it. In part one we cover the story of Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy), Henry Alonzo Longabaugh (The Sundance Kid), and Ethel/Etta Place, the wife (we think) of Longabaugh who participated in a train robbery with them and accompanied them to Chile, where she lived with them for three years. It has been said that Butch and Sundance were killed in a shootout with soldiers in South America- but there are many conflicting reports, and DNA has not been found to prove that out. Etta, whose real identity has never been proved, returned to San Francisco before their shootout and her whereabouts have never been ascertained, although there are a number of possible leads. The mystery of all three is the biggest unsolved mystery of the Old West. The "Coffin Corner Boys" was the nickname given to the B-17 crews of WWII that flew in the most vulnerable corner of the bomber formations. In 1943 and 44 any member of a B-17 crew had a 0% chance of surviving 25 missions over Germany without being shot down. When the Luftwaffe was finally defeated and fighter escorts were provided their chances went up, but only slightly. Author Carole Avriett tells the story of one crew that was shot down over France- telling of their courage, their harrowing adventures, and of the French people and French resistance who risked their lives to save downed allied airmen. In a tiny town named Sans Marie de la Mer on the Southern coast of France, where the Rhone River empties into the Mediterranean, they still celebrate the coming of a small boat which arrived a little over 2,000 years ago. The boat carried with it a group of Christ believers who had been chased out of Palestine after Jesus's crucifiction and set adrift with no sails, or oars, or rudder- to perish in the Mediterranean Sea. Among this group were Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, the mother of James and John the Disciples, and Mary Cleopas, like Salome, a sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus.- all witnesses to Jesus Christ's death, and all devout believers. Also in the small entourage- Joseph of Arimathea, who had asked Pontius Pilot for the body of Jesus, Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead, and other believers who would build churches throughout Europe and spread the word. This is their story, and a story in which we discuss the discovery of the long buried Gnostic Scriptures, the Gospel of Mary, Saul's purging of Christians from the Holy Land, the Coptic Christian sect, and more, In Part two we'll cover the incredible story of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who was Jesus's uncle, the legend of where he took Jesus during those years Jesus was missing from the bible, and his tin mines on the coast of England- tin that the Romans needed.. We'll discuss the legend of Mary Magdale's work and her death in France, and the legend she left behind, as well as the works and the fates of the other Mary;s and their companions on their journey.
