S1 Ep 147147. Author Interview - Dr. Van Anders - The Heteronormativity Theory of Low Sexual Desire

E

Desire is Shaped by our Lived Experiences – The Heteronormative Theory Paper Dr. Sari van Anders is the Canada 150 Research Chair in Social Neuroendocrinology, Sexuality, and Gender/Sex, and Professor of Psychology, Gender Studies, and Neuroscience, at Queen's University. Dr. van Anders has published over 80 papers with research that sets out new ways to conceptualize, understand, and map gender/sex, sexual diversity, and sexuality, and also provides unique tools and theories for feminist and queer bioscience, especially within social neuroendocrinology and studies of testosterone. Can we talk about Gendered behavior for a fast minute – a lot of people – majority people – might not know or believe that they are “socially gendered” – she explains this to us. How does being gendered as a female affect our desire? how some aspects of sexuality widely assumed to be hormonal, might actually be better understood with or alongside a sociocultural lens. Okay – on to the mind blowing paper on “the heteronormativity theory of low sexual desire in women partnered with men” – Archives of Sexual behavior 2021. - Why did you write this? - You propose the heteronormativity theory of low sexual desire in women partnered with men, arguing that heteronormative gender inequities are contributing factors. - Four Hypothesis o Inequitable divisions of household labor Women have less free time o Blurring of partner and mother roles – its not that mothers aren’t sexual – it is that the relationship between mothers and those they mother is not a sexual one. Nurturant experiences decrease testosterone and increase peptides like oxytocin and vasopressin. Thinking sexual thoughts can change testosterone levels How Cortisol affects our sexual response o Objectification of women Proximity to the norm matters for their desire Women’s focus on appearance and being sexy instead of sexual Ignorance about the vulva and clitoris negatively impacts desire in women partnered with men o Gender norms surrounding sexual initiation. Discomfort initiating sex contributes to low desire. If women have to say yes everytime a man wants sex – this contributes to low desire. “women’s sexual pleasure within heteronormative framings is fraught.” Women’s duty for sex or inability to say no. - What do we do now that we know this? - Orgasm coercion is her future research The Heteronormativity Theory of Low Sexual Desire in Women Partnered with Men https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10508-021-02100-x https://www.queensu.ca/psychology/van-anders-lab/ March’s Sponsor is Tabu – to prioritize your sexual wellness www.heytabu.com CODE: YANB for 15% off your kit This Podcast is not approved for credit by CMEfy, however, you may reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and engage to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ via point-of-care learning activities here: https://earnc.me/vKccS5 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kj-casperson/message Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 131134. Stop Gaslighting My Vagina

E

On social media A woman asked – my vagina is so dry that sex is painful, how can I fix this? Wikipedia: Gaslighting is a colloquialism, loosely defined as making someone question their own reality. The answer provided on social media to this question: - Regular sexual activity, self stimulation and pelvic floor exercise can help keep your vagina health. - IS THIS ACTUALLY TRUE? - This doctor said “I tell women to avoid sugar and use probiotics to make sure their entire ecosystem is “humming along” – NO evidence that oral probiotics affect vaginal microbiome – then she plugs her diet and her probiotic products - She then goes on to say – two additional ways to counteract vaginal dryness is to strengthen the pelvic floor by doing kegel exdrcises and using a “holistic formulation” that helps maintain optimal levels of natural moisture, and “supports a healthy vulva and vagina”. – this is her product – which states it “prevents leaks” and costs 70 dollars. Also claims to “reignight desire” – WTF I searched in J sex med - does intercourse delay or treat vaginal atrophy? – can’t find a damn thing I found on an internet site - “Regular sexual activity, with or without a partner, can help maintain healthy vaginal tissues through increased blood flow and avoid or lessen the effects of vaginal atrophy.” - No citations, so again I went to J Sex med – can’t find a thing On menopause.org - Regular vaginal sexual activity is important for vaginal health after menopause because it stimulates blood flow, helps keep your vaginal muscles toned, and maintains your vagina’s length and stretchiness. - No citations, and furthermore, the vaginal muscles are smooth muscles controlled by the autonomic nervous system – you can’t tone them with sexual activity - I will buy that stretching the vagina frequently probably allows it to be stretched frequently without pain – but is there evidence and why sex, why not just dilation? Current treatment options for postmenopausal vaginal atrophy Iuliia Naumova1 and Camil Castelo-Branco2 Int J Womens Health. 2018; 10: 387–395. It is important not to forget about the positive effect of sexual intercourse on the improvement of vaginal health – no citations (JAMA 1983;249:2195-2198) Vaginal Atrophy in the Postmenopausal WomanThe Importance of Sexual Activity and Hormones - But this study was not randomized – perhaps the less atrophy allowed the women to be sexually active and not vice versa? How do we know the sexual activity caused less atrophy? We don’t have any studies. Another paper on vaginal atrophy gave this recommendation - Regular sexual activity should be encouraged to maintain vaginal health. (II-2B) - Usefulness/efficacy is less well established by evidence/opinion Why is level 2-2B evidence cited as scientific fact? Pro-tip – Billionaire Marc Cuban just started an online pharmacy for low cost generic drugs https://costplusdrugs.com/ - vaginal estrogen tabs for < 10 bucks, cream for 54 dollars. I am her guest and we talk about all of it in a show that drives home the mind-vagina connection during menopause and midlife. S1 Ep 126Sexual Agency and How to Communicate Better with Dr. Juliana Hauser

Dr. Juliana is a relationship and sex expert with a PhD in Counseling Education; a background in teaching gender studies and therapists at the graduate level; a licensed marriage and family / professional and practicing counselor herself. She says sex is the final chapter in personal development – I could not agree more! We learn how to talk, but rarely learn how to listen to feedback - that and more in this wonderful episode. Our sexuality is so much more than what we were taught. It is so much more than our sex acts. How does sex relate to everything else in your life? Let’s talk about sexual agency. The power of having your own back. Let’s talk about consent in a marriage and/or a long term relationship – a woman has sex with the partner because he wants to, but she really doesn’t want to and just goes through the moves – - Is this consent? - Is she damaging her “desire” or rewiring her brain when she just goes through the motions? - “It’s okay because it has always been okay is not good enough” How to receive communication – how to feel safe – we do a fun role play! How to have a conversation about sexual wants. There is always something underneath the ask. www.dr-juliana.com www.instagram.com/drjulianahauser Don't Forget your CME! https://earnc.me/j7Klfq --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kj-casperson/message Learn more about your ad choices. Beta Testing! Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs here: https://earnc.me/dMybKs The topic formally known as Sex-ED Dr. Teresa Wood trained in Philosophy, she has always been interested in the ways in which science and belief are applied to our bodies, our wellness, our sexuality and our education. For years thereafter, she used her stage presence, her poetry and her humorous teaching style to help her audience unlearn the old-school Sex Education that created fear and shame in place of respectful sexuality. Her pleasure positive Sexy Seminars replaced Sex-Ed with awareness, empowerment, and access to healthy hotness within relationships. In 2006, she earned a Medical Doctorate and pursued her interest in Sexual Medicine. She continues to write and work in BC, Canada as a physician, and a Sex/Intimacy & Relationship Coach, revamping the topic formerly known as Sex-Ed. I love this bio! I just heard sex ed called “preventative reproduction” – it really isn’t sex ed at all is it? “You get a fair bit of education from silence” – Dr. Wood “Loss of foreplay is loss of sex for women” – Dr. Wood She describes low libido as low dopamine in the nucleus accumbens. They are not being rewarded for the sex they are having (because it isn’t satisfying and not releasing dopamine). ““de-goal-ing” penetrative sex is the goal” – Dr. Wood Female Ejaculation - some people have it and some people don’t – both are okay. “We don’t care if it is pee, we care if it is glee!” – Dr. Wood https://www.instagram.com/drteresawood/ https://drteresawood.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kj-casperson/message Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 121The Sweetness of Venus - A History of the Clitoris

E

Today I am lucky enough to interview Sarah Chadwick, author of “The Sweetness of Venus”. She is passionate about sex equality, gender studies, humor and learning. Her book is dedicated to: “This book is for all those who have a clitoris, or the opportunity to engage with one.” Why she wrote this book! You talk about how the clitoris is lost and found and lost and found throughout documented history. “17th-century under-the-table narrative about sex has a strong emphasis on mutual pleasure that is noticeably lacking in many of today’s sex-ed books and in too many sex-ed classes.” Why don’t we tell girls and boys about this aspect of a woman’s anatomy? We discuss the female condition of being frigid – now we have a medical disorder if we don’t orgasm with PIV sex. In 1994 U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jocelyn Elders suggested sex should be mentioned as safe and healthy in school curricula. In answer to a question at the UN Conference on AIDS as to whether she thought teaching about masturbation in schools might reduce unsafe sex, she replied: “I think that is something that is part of human sexuality and it’s part of something that should perhaps be taught. But we’ve not even taught our children the very basics.” She was forced to resign by Bill Clinton as a consequence.” 1966 – The sexually adequate female “Frank S. Caprio, M.D., recommends “psychiatric assistance” for any woman who prefers clitoral stimulation to other forms of sexual activity. ” How did views about female morality come to be bound up with women’s sexuality? How is sharing this on social media going? Are we allowed to say clitoris? Can you talk about the American versus UK approach to menopause care? S1 Ep 103For the Men! Sex Surrogacy and Coaching

E

Today we welcome Erika Davian – we are both certified at the Life coach school and someone connected us! I had been saying that someone ought to coach the men! And then she showed up in my life! Today we are learning about surrogate partner therapy with her. We need to pay attention to the men too! And we are in this episode! She tells us how she got into this niche. She helps millennial men cultivate the confidence to create the life they want in and out of the bedroom. She helps them show up as themselves. A myth is that “straight men have it so easy” when in fact they have a lot of pressure to “be” a certain way as much if not more than other people. She quickly saw that some clients-- particularly younger clients-- thought their sexual dysfunction was purely physiological, when really, the psychological component was playing as big or an even bigger role. What is a common limiting belief or scenarios that men have about sexuality? “Anxiety and erections are not good bedfellows” “there is one way to please a woman” is very pervasive. “things are problems because we think they are problems” She says - I’ve seen men encounter sexual dysfunction and shame, simply because their mind was sabotaging their body’s ability to perform. Tips for men to start talking to their partner about sex. Tips for premature ejaculation. You help men manage their mind – what are some common themes that you see?
