Why Seed Fails & What To Do When It Does

Face it, with so many seed companies vying for your business, no seed rep will tell a farmer it’s their fault when their stand suffers. But Kelly Garrett says oftentimes it comes down to operator error. He shares his advice for avoiding a “seed failure” which might really be a planting error. Kelly also shares — based on experience — how to salvage a wounded crop without the expense of replanting. Integra’s B.J. Schaben and Mark Menke, on the other hand, say conditions at time of planting and other factors are often to blame for a bad stand. You’ll enjoy this discussion as it rekindles the debate over nature versus nurture. The big takeaway, according to Kelly is this: When your crop is amazing seed gets too much credit, when your crop underperforms, your seed takes too much of the criticism. Presented by AgXplore

In-Furrow For A Firm Foundation

Temple Rhodes started applying nutrients in-furrow at time of planting 12 years ago. He didn’t get everything right the first go-round but in the learning years since, he’s certainly become a believer. Last year one of Temple's experiments demonstrated a 2,500 to 3,000 corn plant emergence difference between in-furrow nutrition acres versus non in-furrow treatment. The difference, according to Temple is in the building of the foundation. “I’m building a factory within that plant and you can’t build a factory without a firm foundation." Temple and Adrian Boyd of AgXplore share lessons and thoughts on building a better plant beginning at time of planting. Presented by AgXplore

SWAT Soil Mapping: What It Is & Why You Need It

Soil survey maps are cool to look at, but they may not be completely accurate because they were done by hand decades ago. Yield maps — now spit out by your combine — are fun to look at, but it turns out they may not be completely accurate either due to lack of user re-calibration. So what should you do if you want a real good picture of what’s happening in your fields? XtremeAg affiliate Matt Swanson says you should look at SWAT soil mapping. Why You Should Consider Variable Rate Corn Seeding

Integrated Ag Solutions’ Mike Evans began writing variable rate seeding prescriptions when both he and Kelly Garrett realized they were wasting money on seed. Too much seed was being planted in low performing soils that couldn’t possibly produce the yield necessary to justify high seeding rates. Even though Mike and Kelly both knew they needed to back off on seeding rate, they didn’t reveal that to Kelly’s dad. Why? Because many farmers stick to the “more seed = more yield” philosophy. Only problem: It’s not so. Kelly Garrett and XA Affiliate Matt Swanson discuss how they’ll reduce input costs by $15 per acre by reducing corn population without reducing their yield. Presented by Loveland Products with support from Agricen.

Record Farm Income in 2022 - Now What?

American farms recorded record net farm income in 2022 — up 14% year over year to $160 billion. What does this mean as you roll into the 2023 season? What adjustments should you be making to remain profitable without being profligate in your spending in the new year? Farmers often look to spend money to expense themselves out of a tax bill but is that a good idea? Will 2023 bring another record and if so, what management decisions should you be making now? Crop inputs and machinery expenses have — in many cases — outpaced the percentage gains in farm income. With that backdrop, as well as plenty of volatility, Kelly Garrett and his farm accountant Ben Hansen offer guidance on farm financials to prosper when the market is up (or down!). Presented by Advanced Drainage Systems with support from Agricen.

Managing Fertility For The Short Term (When The Land Is Going Away)

Sometimes you have to manage fertility for a farm that, quite frankly, you don’t know if you’ll be farming next year. This is due to development pressure, a volatile cash rent market like much of the country is experiencing at the moment, or land ownership changes. The goal is to do right by the farm ground and your own farm’s profitability to maximize returns without “mining” the soil. Chad, Kevin, and Matt Swanson provide their practices based on experience when they farm a property that might not be in their mix a year or two down the road. Presented by AgXplore.

Select Shot In-Furrow Product Performance Review with Kevin Matthews

CapstanAg’s Select Shot system was trialed in 2022 by three XtremeAg guys. Kevin delivers some feedback based on his two planter comparison — one set up with the SelectShot system, one without. Results: Better utilization of crop inputs. More precise in-furrow application. And the chance to reduce product usage which saves money. CapstanAg’s Stuart Meacham joins the conversation to explain the technology. One big challenge for tomorrow’s farmer will be environmental compliance and demonstrating judicious usage of inputs. The SelectShot system might help with that. Presented by Advanced Drainage Systems.

Variable Rate Nitrogen Application — The Proof Is In The Soil!

In a previous episode, Kelly Garrett and Mike Evans discussed a lesson they learned the hard way (it cost them yield and money!) about the practice of variable rate “N” application. In this sequel, Mike and Kelly explain the soil reaction and final takeaways from their experiment with flat rate nitrogen versus their standard practice of variable-rate application. The results are remarkable. The proof is in the soil (and the yield monitor). And if you need more encouragement to stop applying your fertilizer at a flat rate, you’ll get it in this episode! New Opportunities to Make More Per Acre in 2023

XtremeAg’s Kelly Garrett was at the forefront of profiting off carbon credits. As the carbon marketplace becomes more clearly defined and understood, the opportunity to boost revenue on farms is expanding. According to Truterra’s Mariah Murphy, there are more dollars to be deployed through Ecosystem Services than available acres. She explains how the Truterra system carbon payments can be applied to your farm. It’s simple, and on average will fetch you $12 per acre for adjusting tillage and cover crop practices. Truterra is also rolling out a nitrogen reduction program that can add more non-crop revenue to your bottom line. The sustainability program starts with a soil health assessment that could improve your farm AND your bottom line! Presented by Advanced Drainage Systems with support from Agricen.

Adjusting The Acreage Mix For 2023

Last year, Kelly Garrett planned to plant more soybean acres than corn. He didn’t end up doing that, nor did he dabble more in soybean following soybean acres. Why did he change his cropping mix plans? Economics. Heading into 2023 it’s once again economics that are driving his decision to ramp up corn acres at the expense of beans — to the tune of a 65-35% split. Kelly explains the adjustments he’ll be making — from increased man power to managing residue and insecticide treatments — to boost output and profits with more corn acres in the rotation. What The Markets Are Telling Us At Harvest Time & What We Can Learn From It

Markets are always a bit volatile but 2022 was more so than average. Corn prices moved up and down by more than 30%, cotton prices dropped by half, and soybeans weren’t always stable. Nutrient Stratification — You Have It, Here’s How You Remedy It

The smarter we get the more we realize we don’t know, or at least, didn’t know. So it goes with nutrient stratification in your fields. The traditional (easy) answer has been to throw more fertility at the problem, but as XA's Kelly Garrett says, “I believe we often times have more than adequate fertility, it’s just not where it needs to be or readily available.” And that pretty much sums up the stratification problem — your top few inches of soil are ripe with fertility, but the water and uptake roots are deeper where there’s a nutrient void. Shaun Guthmiller with Concept Agritek explains how to diagnose and remedy nutrient stratification. Presented by Advanced Drainage Systems
