On Thursday, Lawmakers returned to Jones Street to move forward in an aid package for those in Western North Carolina that have been impacted by Hurricane Helene as the legislature approved a new $604 million relief bill - this adds to the $273 million that was approved earlier this month. This move comes one day following Governor Roy Cooper's proposed $3.9 billion in disaster relief from the state as a response to the damage caused by Helene. The Governor also estimated the damage in Western North Carolina at around $53 billion and said the proposal yesterday would be used for costs that would not be covered by the federal government.
