Bonnie Meadows President-Elect of the North Carolina Nurses Association

A nurse is recovering after she was attacked and severely injured by a patient at a Moore County Hospital. According to a spokesperson from FirstHealth, a patient assaulted a nurse on Monday in the emergency department at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. The nurse, Crystal Thompson, said the patient attacked her then placed her in a chokehold, slammed her head against the floor and broke her leg. The North Carolina Nurses Association released a statement denouncing the attack. Bonnie Meadows, President-Elect of the North Carolina Nurses Association, joined Jeff Hamlin to discuss the situation.

Darryl Robinson Appalachian State Hall of Famer

Darryl Robinson, a name etched throughout the App State men's basketball record books, will have his jersey retired by the program on Feb. 22, App State Athletics announced Monday. Robinson's jersey will be the first in App State men's basketball history to be hung from the rafters. The retirement ceremony will take place at halftime of App State's home finale against the Marshall Thundering Herd, the culmination of a season-long celebration of the Mountaineer legend. A 1986 App State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Robinson was a two-time All-SoCon second-team honoree, a first-team All-SoCon selection in 1979 and the 1979 SoCon Tournament MVP. Jeff Hamlin, an Appalachian State graduate, talked with Robinson about his induction to the Appalachian State Hall of Fame and being coached by a young Bobby Crimmins.

Durham and North Carolina are remembering an icon and advocate who died Tuesday. Dr. Lavonia Allison who was a longtime civil rights activist passed away at age 94 in Durham. Her son, Vincent Allison, made the announcement on Facebook. Dr. Allison led the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People for 14 years. She retired from the committee in 2011 and remained active in local politics. Former North Carolina State Senator Floyd McKissick and Durham City Councilman Floyd McKissick worked with Dr. Allison. He shared memories about her with Jeff Hamlin.

Eric and Terry Murray, parents of the late PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray, have announced the official launch of the Grayson Murray Foundation in their son’s honor. Murray, who was open about his personal experience with anxiety, depression and addiction, passed away on May 25, 2024 at the age of 30. A native of Raleigh, Murray played college golf at Wake Forest, East Carolina and UNC Greensboro. He earned five professional wins. The mission of the Grayson Murray Foundation is to raise awareness and support of mental health and addiction challenges faced by individuals from all walks of life.

Facebook and Instagram owner Meta says it’s scrapping its third-party fact-checking program and replacing it with “community notes” written by users similar to the model used by Elon Musk’s social platform X. Starting in the U.S., Meta will end its fact-checking program with independent third parties. The company said it decided to end the program because expert fact checkers had their own biases and too much content ended up being fact checked. The social media company also said plans to allow “more speech” by lifting some restrictions on some topics that are part of mainstream discussion in order to focus on illegal and “high severity violations” like terrorism, child sexual exploitation and drugs. The fact that Shamsud-Din Jabbar and Matthew Livelsberger both served in the military shines a light on a growing mental health crisis, according to members of a North Carolina veterans group. Deb Elek served in the Marines. Since then, she started 22 Saves Hockey in Rolesville, named for a sobering statistic--the fact that an estimated 22 veterans are lost to suicide every day. It was a case that divided the Triangle area in 2006 I’m talking about the Duke Lacrosse case when a young exotic dancer said and college student a student alleged that she had been raped at the Durham residence of two of the team's captains, in March of 2006. Investigation and resolution of the case sparked public discussion of racism, sexual violence, media bias, and due process on campuses. The former lead prosecutor, Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong, ultimately resigned in disgrace, and was disbarred and briefly imprisoned for violating ethics standards. ‘Tis the season to travel, and AAA estimates 3.3 million North Carolinians will journey 50 miles or more away from home from December 23 to January 2. That’s an increase of 134,000 people over last year and a new record-high for the year-end holiday travel period in North Carolina since the pandemic. National travel figures are also stronger than 2021, yet slightly lower than pre-pandemic levels. An estimated 112.7 million Americans are forecast to travel during the year-end holidays. That’s an increase of 3.6 million people compared to last year and the third busiest since AAA began tracking in 2000. Siobahn Grady Assistant Professor at North Carolina Central University

North Carolina Central University announced a $1 million grant from Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, to establish the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research (IAIER). The Institute will serve as a first-of-its kind program for a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the nation. To celebrate Wednesday’s NCCU hosted an event on its campus, bringing together representatives from other grant recipients along with university and Google leaders, local elected officials and students. The support from Google.org for NCCU’s program is designed to enhance research and educational opportunities and position students and the state as leaders in AI innovation and equity, and workforce development. Dr. Siobahn Grady, an assistant professor at North Carolina Central, joined Jeff Hamlin to discuss the grant.
