Identity Over Insecurity
It's something every musician deals with. As creatives, our art is an expression of what's on the inside. And whether good or bad, joyful or sad, that expression is sometimes the only way to communicate our truest of emotions. With that, sharing our art or creative expression can be done with a couple different approaches. One of insecurity. Or one of confidence. Being confident in who you are comes from a secure place of knowing who you are on the inside. Identity is something we talk a lot about on this podcast because it's probably the most important piece to unlocking our deepest and broadest potential. When you know who you are on the inside, there's no room for insecurity. And you can create music and worship how God designed you to worship - in Spirit AND in Truth. In this episode, we're back with our discussion panel (Brenton Miles, Libby Lewis, and Jordan Holt) explaining some of our lessons along the way as worship leaders and musicians. Healing From Church Heartache
In this episode, Brenton Miles sits down with Worship Online's Libby Lewis to discuss her personal journey through a tough family situation at church. Sometimes churches split, there is disunity, slander, and things not of God that happen as a result of insecurity, fear, or sinful human nature. That said, there's no perfect church because the Church is made up of imperfect people. But in this episode, we talk about some key ways to heal, rest, forgive, and love... no matter the heartache. God is the ultimate redeemer... which means... he REDEEMS... He has the power to heal and set us free from any paid caused by relationships, and ultimately can give us the power to forgive and restore previously broken relationships with people and with the church. Investing In Yourself
In Episode 34, Brenton Miles (Worship Leader / Songwriter) and Libby Lewis (Worship Leader / Songwriter / Worship Online Staff) sit down to discuss the importance of investing in yourself. It's easy to get so wrapped up in the day-to-day life of work, school, family, and ministry, that we can easily forget where we pull our energy from. REST is super important. ALONE TIME is crucial. And TIME AWAY with God is a MUST. It's also important to place a value on the things that matter in our lives. Investing doesn't always just mean time... it also means resource. You spend your money on the things that are valuable to you. So we highly suggest INVESTING money AND time back into yourself along the way. Whether is buying a good book, attending a conference, or taking a much needed vacation... if it costs you something, it will be much more valuable... and (side note) we can tend to draw a lot more out of something when it costs us money. Escaping Burnout
It's true - so many people in the church these days experience some sort of burnout... but what's the cause? Why is it so difficult sometimes? Whew... this is a big one. But we HAVE to talk about it. Volunteers, staff, leaders, pastors, you name it... whether you like it or not... we ALL need rest. And if you aren't resting... or if you haven't had a service where you haven't served in a while... take a step back and ask yourself why. It's imperative that you not only rest for yourself... but ultimately if you're burning out, it can have a damaging affect on others too. SO... in this episode, we talk about some experiences, as well as practical steps to escaping the burnout. And we would LOVE to hear some ways you've escaped burnout as well! Send in some ways you've seen it or overcome it yourself. We value your feedback and it totally helps us know where you guys are at on the journey with this podcast! What Really Happens When You Worship
Ok so we all know that worship does more than just make us feel good and connect us with God... it actually shifts things in the spiritual realm. SO what exactly happens when we worship? In this episode we open up some basic realities that are found in scripture that cause for things to be radically shifted when we worship. So when decide to open your mouth and start to give glory, praise, and honor to God in worship: 1. You're changing the atmosphere 2. You're renewing people's minds around you 3. You're breaking down walls (personal walls and for others) It's a powerful thing when we worship because it also disarms the enemy's plans and is also a weapon against fear and anxiety! If you'd like to hear more about how worship can combat spiritual attacks, check out our last episode (Episode 29) We would love your feedback! Preparing For Spiritual Attacks
What is a spiritual attack and how can you prepare to defend one? This episode is packed full of truth from scripture as well as personal experiences from hosts Libby Lewis & Brenton Miles in the midst of leading worship and leading teams. Libby lists out 3 points that are crucial to understand in knowing where the enemy plans to attack: Steel // Kill // Destroy - That's what he does - And where he tries to attack is important to know how to defend and disarm him. Be sure to check out Libby's post on the Worship Online Blog here which explains what we discuss in more detail. We would love to hear your feedback! Worshipping In Spirit AND Truth
Episode 28 is definitely one that digs a little deeper into the why behind worship. In John 4:23-24 we hear that scripture from Jesus talking to the Samaritan woman that we've maybe heard a lot if you've grown up in church, but what does that actually mean? There are probably many different explanations of these scriptures, but we wanted to take a look at it from a different perspective being a worship leader... Often times, it's easy to lead in Spirit (or by the Spirit) especially for musicians, because we tend to be more in touch with our emotions and feelings... but what does it mean to worship in truth? Truth is the foundation for everything... if the truth is what sets us free, then it's probably not just knowing the truth about certain circumstances, but instead knowing the TRUTH about who we are in Christ. If the basis for truth is the WORD of God, then everything the Bible says about us will become the foundation of our belief system... and when we know our identity and firmly believe that what the Bible says is TRUTH, then we can worship in the absolute freedom that the truth (the WORD) has made a way for. Understand what the Bible says about YOU, and you'll be able to worship in not only the Spirit, but also in Truth. We would love to hear your feedback! How To Run An Efficient Rehearsal
Similarly to Episode 26, we're diving in to the DNA of being a worship team. This is a big one. For many teams, rehearsals start on Sunday morning right before service... but this episode, we talk about the endless possibilities of team building, encouragement, and growing as musicians together with the art of having an efficient rehearsal. In our past episode on creating Team Nights, we dive in a little deeper on the long lasting affects of creating space for your team to develop, but in this episode, we're unveiling some super practical tips for good communication, expectations for your team, and ways to build an effective rehearsal environment. We would love to hear your feedback! Be sure to leave us a review or shoot us an e-mail if you'd like to join the conversation. How To Run An Efficient Sound Check
Common issues that come up during rehearsals and run thrus can typically always be avoided with a good soundcheck. In this episode, Shalon and Brenton sit down to talk about effective ways to troubleshoot and get thru a soundcheck and how easy it can be for everyone on stage. The key to a good soundcheck is consistency. Try to repeat the same things every time. Communicate clearly and take note of what you need when you're playing so you can affectively make your changes known when it's your turn. Some key tips: • Take turns communicating changes to your monitor engineer... it can be very frustrating when everyone is trying to communicate all at once. Mostly for the engineer, but also for the team. And more than likely, all of the changes won't get made because he or she will be stressed... SO... have a system. Communicate one at a time, or have one person on stage designated to communicating the changes for everyone. • Play thru a whole song first, then make changes. Keep track in your head of what you need up and down in your mix. • If your mix always sounds muddy, instead of constantly turning things up, what are things you can turn down? - Common misconception. • Get a Front Of House (FOH) mix first, then tweak ears. The sound guys will always want to set gains and EQ's to make sure the source sounds good before making changes to mixes. We would love to hear your feedback! Creativity in the Church with Jordan Holt (Kari Jobe/The Belonging Co.)
Episode 25 is one you won't want to miss. We're sitting down for the second week in a row with Jordan Holt to discuss one of his favorite topics to talk about. In fact, just this week, he released a post on Worship Online's blog (check it out here) about Worshipping Through Authentic Creativity. There's no question that when it comes to music in the church, there have been some staple sounds and inspirations that modern worship has pulled from. We talk about this quite a bit, but what is YOUR sound? What's YOUR expression of worship when you're creating new tones, delays, drum parts, or harmonies? God is the ultimate creator, and we are created beings called to create! So how are we doing that to the best of our ability no matter what is in our hand? We would love to hear your feedback! Finding Your Sound with Jordan Holt (Kari Jobe/The Belonging Co.)
In Episode 24, Worship Online's Shalon Palmer sits down with Worship Leader, Brenton Miles for an exciting interview with Pro Guitarist and Instructor Jordan Holt. Jordan plays guitar full time with Kari Jobe and has been involved in various different music projects over the last few years, and is involved at his church, The Belonging Co in Nashville. Our extended interview with Jordan Holt will be over two separate podcast episodes. In this first episode, we give you an introduction to Jordan, his story, and how he got involved with music, as well as some valuable lessons he's learned along the way. Introducing New Songs To Your Church!
In Episode 23, Libby Lewis & Brenton Miles sit down to talk about a subject that gets brought up quite a bit in the Worship Online e-mails - how to introduce new songs within the church! This is a great question and there are so many ways to incorporate new songs depending on your church. We dive into different options, how to roll them out with your team, and how to stay not only current with new songs, but also how to lead a group of people into new songs without completely disconnecting from them. These are GREAT questions and we love hearing from you not only with questions, but also ideas and ways things have worked (or not worked) with your team! Remaining Faithful In The Waiting
First of all - THANK YOU to all of our amazing listeners who've jumped on and given us iTunes Reviews! - And a special shoutout to all of our winners thru the month of April! Enjoy your Guitar Center gift cards and thanks for spreading the love for Worship Online! In Episode 22 Brenton Miles (worship leader) and Libby Lewis (worship leader and staff member with Worship Online) sit down to discuss remaining faithful within a team even in the waiting. In a culture where talent is put on a pedestal and everything tends to be a microwave/immediate gratification mindset - it's important to remember that when it comes to the CHURCH (family, community, teams, leaders), God's timing is everything. Don't ever second guess His timing when you may not be in the place where you feel the most "power" - Many times, we're tested in areas of "less significance" to teach us humility, influence, serving & stewarding what God is doing in a place, and the ability to take on any role with a good attitude... SO DON'T DESPISE THE WAITING... OWN IT! Press in to the power of God and find out what he's saying in the waiting... because he's there. And many (if not most) of the HUGE lessons learned along the way are in the waiting or quiet spaces in life... not on the stage. In this episode, we talk about what being unprepared looks like as well as the necessary steps to being not only prepared on your parts but going the extra mile in helping the other people on your team be prepared. Should Worship Musicians Be Paid?
In Episode 20, we tackle the big question of whether or not musicians in church should be paid... this is a big one. And you might be surprised by some of our dialogue in this one... We discuss some of the positive and negative affects that paying (or not paying) musicians can have on a worship team. At the end of the day, how are we best supporting and inspiring growth, community, and unity within the local church to the best of our ability and our leadership? Why And How To Have A Team Night
Team Night's have become a great way to build community, hone the creative experience, and share the vision and direction of the team within the church. At the end of the day, teams of musicians, leaders, production, and creatives all desire to be connected to a community of like minded people. When we open up a space for God to speak and encourage us by being around each other, amazing things can happen. In this episode, we discuss many different options for team nights. The last thing musicians that are consistently serving in the church probably need is another "service" to go to... but dinner together, nights of worship and prayer together, and nights to just hang, have a fire pit, drink coffee, or play games can be essential to growing together and leaning on each other as a family. Being A Leader (Off Stage)
Being a leader is what's expected out of a worship leader... but leadership is not something automatically assumed from a position... it's something earned, and comes as a byproduct of serving and helping people. In Episode 18, we discuss what some of these different roles look like, how to best serve the teams we're leading, and how there should be no difference in your approach to leading/serving off stage as there is on. How To Be Ready for Anything
In Episode 17, Brenton Miles, Worship Leader, Producer, & Co-Host sits down with Libby Lewis, Worship Leader, Songwriter, Vocal Coach, & Worship Online team member to talk about how to be ready for anything in a worship set or service. It's common where worship leaders and teams have to be ready for last minutes changes, songs, keys, and sometimes even different genres from what we're commonly used to! In this episode, we talk about how to build a relationship with your pastor to know their direction, habits, and communication styles to know where they're headed even if it's not the pre-communicated roadmap. Unity is key, and so is serving your pastors. As a musician, team leader, or band director, being ready for anything is a huge part of flow and eliminating distractions in a worship set. Performance VS. Worship
In Episode 16, Brenton Miles, Worship Leader, Producer, & Co-Host sits down with Libby Lewis, Worship Leader, Songwriter, Vocal Coach, & Worship Online team member to discuss the difference between performance and worship as a worship team or worship leader. This came from a question that was e-mailed to us from worship leaders/pastors from around the country. We talk about the difference between the two mindsets... where performance can tend to have a standard of perfection, whereas worship is a posture of the heart for obeying God and serving people. Finding Liberation In Taking Risks with Phil Joel (Zealand)
In Episode 14, Brenton Miles, Co-host & Worship Leader sits down with Phil Joel, Zealand frontman and Worship Leader to talk all things worship and the journey that God has taken Phil on over the last 25 years of being a full time touring musician and recording artist. You may recognize Phil's voice from his recent projects as the frontman of Zealand, or maybe from his past years as the bass player and singer for Newsboys. In this episode, the guys talk about so many topics relating to worship... like being yourself, saying yes, and the freedom found when taking a "risk" and jumping into all that God has. In the natural it seems risky, but God will never let us down... so jump in! The new record by Zealand called "Liberation" can be found anywhere music is sold - Here are the links to iTunes & Spotify. Be sure to check it out! Be That Person Who Says Yes
In Episode 13, we unlock the full potential of a worship leader - Being a person that always says "YES". Being a person that gains influence and grows in leadership, typically carry a few patterns that you can recognize pretty quickly. A few that stand out are: a good attitude, someone who's constantly excited about the vision and instruction, and someone who always says "yes". Anytime you go to an improv show, it's taught that any idea that's thrown out is always "Yes, And" - Shalon unpacks this thought more in the episode. Instead of being someone who always says, "ya, I don't think that's going to work" - figure out a way to say "Yes, and we can add this too" - Watch how that will shift the environment of your team if everyone had that approach. Who's In Charge On Your Team
In Episode 12, Shalon shares a personal story of one of the scariest moments in his life... No joke, if we all had a moment like that, it would be unforgettable. You'll have to listen in to hear the story... But it ties right into what we're talking about - Knowing who's in charge. It's important to know who's making the calls and who the leader is inside of a church setting. Organization and leadership is paramount to a healthy church. But it all starts with a mutual respect and honor of each other. The mindset that we're all family and working together as a team to accomplish a goal. But it's also knowing who's in charge and who makes the final decision. It's been said that the primary worship leader in the church is the Lead Pastor. I couldn't agree more. The church is following their lead. If they entrust other leaders, the church will follow them as well, wholeheartedly... but the atmosphere and passion in a room (the temperature) is set by the lead pastor. Avoiding Train Wrecks
In Episode 10, we talk about the importance of avoiding train wrecks in a worship set. It all starts with good communication. When the band is clear on where you're headed, there's a good chance you'll avoid any mishaps or train wrecks. When the band is clueless and people are communicating different things... that's where the breakdown occurs. It's really difficult to not be distracted by a train wreck. This episode goes hand in hand with being prepared. But it's so much more than that. This is not only being musically prepared, but having the knowledge in the moment when NOT to play something. Or communicating ahead of time with the MD or band director so you and everyone else are aware of where you're going beforehand. We'd love if you shared any train wreck stories you may have had recently or not-so-recently. Shoot us an e-mail at [email protected] or leave it in the review section of iTunes! How To Become A Better Musician
In episode 9, we talk about PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! - You guessed it... hopefully... we're talking about practice. - It's what Worship Online is all about - Equipping and resourcing the local church with content and material that will help any musician practice. In this episode, we dive deeper into the idea of practice... how it helps not only grow us as musicians, but helps take our teams to the next level. Going beyond what's expected so we can grow into new areas, and be ready to rock at any given moment. Humility, An Honest Conversation
In Episode 7, we get real and talk about the importance of humility as worship leaders. Now... how do you have an open and honest conversation about humility with a couple of musicians on a podcast? --- we have not idea. But it starts with this quote - "Humility is being comfortable in your own skin." The opposite of humility can look different. It can look like insecurity, arrogance, lack of self confidence or self worth... whereas some characteristics of someone who walks in humility, is service, confidence, and influence. Confidence is key to healthy leadership, but leadership is a bi-product of service. If you don't serve people first, then how will you know how to lead? In this episode, we start the conversation and ask some of the hard questions, while also point out some examples. The Secret Weapon To Success As A Musician
Prepare - Prepare - Prepare! Preparation is key to the success of every musician. Next to the heart behind worship, preparation truly is the most important piece to a smooth and enjoyable experience while leading worship. It's also the entire purpose behind starting Worship Online in the first place! Being prepared adds a whole new level of influence and respect within a team. In addition to showing up early, treating people with respect and professionalism, when a musician shows up knowing all their parts, pedals, hits, melodies… it makes everyone else feel comfortable and confident. Again, like most of the things we'll cover in this podcast, it goes back to serving. When you show up prepared, you're serving your team, leaders, and ultimately giving God your best. In this episode, we go even deeper in uncovering the heart behind being prepared. Truly, the best experiences in worship are the unexpected. So if we stop preparing after the 3-4 songs that we have to play in the set list, what about the "flow moments". What about the moments when Holy Spirit starts to move and the band continues to press in… if you're not prepared for those moments, it can quickly turn into a stress mess, a train wreck, or worse… silence… in a bad way. There is definitely good silence, but abrupt stops due to being unprepared… that's a very bad silence. Ha! If we can all prepare on the songs we have to play, the songs in the back catalogue, and new songs that we might roll out in the future… imagine how 2nd nature it will become, and how easy the flow moments will be! AND OF COURSE, in the spirit of being prepared… we're giving away the BEST RESOURCE to help you get prepared! A FREE annual subscription to Worship Online! Be Professional, Not Annoying
We can probably all recall a musician along the way who would show up to band practice, get their gear setup, then start playing immediately while everyone was still setting up. Or the guy (or girl) who shows up without their capo, in-ears, picks, or sticks… maybe the vocalist who decided to come in after their outside job without the chance to shower first or at least wear deodorant… The list goes on…. But, like we mentioned in Episode 2 - Our team members, our family, others… are more important. If we have the decision to be selfish or selfless, we must always chose the latter. When we have a mindset of consistently serving others, our professionalism sky rockets. When we are oblivious to other people… we are just plain annoying. So… simply put - Arrive early. Get setup quickly. Then find someone else to help! Imagine if we all had the mindset of not just serving our congregations… but our team members. The Importance Of Showing Up Early
Simply put, this is a no-brainer. If you want an easy way to influence your team and show them that you care about THEM… may we introduce the most affective sub-conscience way to do so - showing up early. Brenton's pastor growing up used to always say "if you're on time, you're late." - This is something a lot of people disregard and don't think much about. But how many times have you noticed, when you walk into a meeting and the person you're meeting with is already there, how it feels different than when they're not there. The same goes for rehearsals. When everyone is early, set up, and ready to go, then when rehearsal starts, everyone feels at ease and confident. When someone is still dialing in tone, running around to find cables, changing strings when it's time to start… it pushes everything back… then when you have a song that's rough, or technical issues you have to work out, you're already running late and it causes unnecessary stress. Whereas, if everyone is on time, there's a marginal space to work out any unforeseen issues. And if everything goes smoothly, you're done early! More time to hang with the rest of the crew, eat a little snack in the green room, use the restroom, etc. It's a short and simple episode, but a truth that is crucial to every teams growth and success. Don't forget! We're giving away a free annual subscription to Worship Online in these first few episodes - Sign up and get more details at https://www.worshiponline.com/podcast. Why We Play Worship Music & The Heart Behind It
In this episode, we talk about the heart behind worship. The "Seek First" principle is something we should all have as a number one priority in our lives as Christians… especially as worship leaders. Matthew 6:33 says "seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you." The entire point of leading worship is to help other people connect with this truth. When we seek God first, He becomes the foundation of our lives and everything else is a bonus… a blessing. When He is first, and his people (Kingdom) are a priority in our lives, then playing, singing, charts, sets, etc. all become secondary… simply put, they are expressions or tools that we use to help facilitate an encounter with God, with him being the ultimate priority and focus. This is why aside from our introduction, it's our first official episode… because it's the most important… the foundation for this entire podcast. As we unpack more logistics, questions, things to make us sharper in the world of worship leading and music… we will always point back to Episode 2. The reflection of what we discuss will always go back to our heart for seeking first the very presence of God, His Kingdom, His righteousness. We're excited to go on this journey with you and can't wait to explore this next chapter with you on the podcast!
