Ep 39Turkey Hunting Fails

As the spring turkey season comes to a close here in Wisconsin, it’s a good time to reflect on the ups and downs of our season. You can learn a lot from your successes, but you can learn even more from your failures. That’s good news, because if you’re like most turkey hunters, your failures far out number your kills. On this episode the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh sums up his turkey season. While it was the least productive season he’s had in Wisconsin so far, he learned a lot of lessons about calling, making moves on birds, and general woodsmanship. Tune in to hear how Josh’ season has gone and his plans for chasing a big Tom one more time before the buzzer. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 38Spring in the Driftless: Turkey, Trout, and Morels

It’s hard to beat a beautiful spring morning in the Wisconsin Driftless! The turkeys are gobbling, the fish are biting, and the morels are popping! But even the most beautiful weather days in picturesque terrain can be a grind. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles of Good Chance Fly Fishing about their recent romp through Wisconsin’s Driftless area. While they were hoping to get a couple of longbeards on the ground, a sack full of morels, and sore arms from fighting fish, the day didn’t go exactly as planned. There was not a morel in sight and the gobblers were simply not interested in playing the game. But Josh and Pierce still had a blast and found redemption as they closed the day hauling in hungry Browns on a stereotypical Driftless cow pasture stream. Ep 37Selling Real Estate with Al Wisnefski

For many, the question “How do I go about buying hunting land?” is a daily occurrence. Most outdoorsmen and women dream of owning their own little piece of paradise to hunt, fish, and enjoy the great outdoors. But what if you’ve purchased land, and the dream isn’t so dreamy anymore? What if the commute has become too much? What if the property taxes are just more than you want to pay? What if you want to upsize or just find an all around better property? How should you approach selling your land?In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh is joined by Al Wisnefski of Land & Legacy Group about selling land. Al has been selling property for almost a decade, and he has helped many landowners through the difficult decision to sell their property. While not everyone is looking to sell their land right now, this episode is a great conversation for all those interested in rural real estate. Al shares his entire process from beginning to end. If you’re looking to sell, Al lays out all the things you need to consider as you bring your land to market. If you’re hoping to buy land one day, this conversation will help you know what all is going through the sellers mind. Ep 34Stories from a U.P. Deer Camp, Pt. 2

This episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast is part two of Josh’s conversation with his dad, Brian. Brian grew up hunting the U.P. of Michigan in a traditional Northwoods deer camp. In the late 90s, Brian moved to Alabama. Eventually, he and Josh started hunting in Alabama and joined a hunting club. While hunting clubs can provide a very positive experience, often times politics, secrecy, and competition can drown out camaraderie. In this episode, the guys discuss hunting in a traditional Alabama hunting camp and the transition to hunting the little slice of heaven Brian now calls home. Ep 33Stories from a U.P. Deer Camp, Pt. 1

Few places capture a deer hunter’s imagination quite like a northwoods deer camp. At deer camp, camaraderie is more important than kills, success is measured in good times with good friends instead of inches of antler, and deer hunting plays second fiddle to a whole host of deer camp shenanigans. At deer camp, giant bucks may be every hunter’s dream, but the friendships are what really makes the experience. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh interviews his dad, Brian Sutton. Brian grew up hunting Jones camp in the U.P. of Michigan in the heyday of deer camp culture. Brian shares memories of deer killed, pranks played, and Michigan deer camp culture. The guys also discuss Brian’s transition from the north to the Deep South, Josh’s introduction to hunting and lots more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. While on a recent family vacation, Josh had the opportunity to visit the Woodhaven Custom Calls facility in Alabama. Ep 29Wild Turkey Management with Dr. Grant Woods

Declining turkey populations across much of the U.S. have caused many to sound the alarm. Thankfully, turkey populations in the state of Wisconsin are still very strong. But how can we keep them that way? Is there anything we can do now to avoid seeing the decline other states have experienced? In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Dr. Grant Woods of Growing Deer about the causes of turkey population decline and how land managers can help right the ship. Grant is a biologist with decades of experience managing land to create healthy habitat for deer, turkeys, and other critters. Intensive habitat management and predator population control have played a huge role in Grant’s success. Ep 27How to Build Your Turkey Hunting Playbook with Scott Ellis

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with turkey calling extraordinaire and four time Grand National Calling Champion Scott Ellis about building a turkey hunting playbook. Each hunt and each gobbler is different, so it’s important to have a bank of plays to run no matter the scenario. The deeper your playbook is, the greater your chances of being successful on stubborn longbeards. Scott and Josh discuss a few ways to help you build out your playbook and fill more turkey tags this spring. Scott is a turkey calling champion, author, and host of Hunt Quest. He’s also an accomplished hunter. Cutting his teeth hunting Osceolas in Florida, Scott travels each year chasing Toms across the country and has completed two single season Grand Slams and two Royal Slams. In this episode, Scott mentions that he wants to be remembered as the guy who shared his knowledge of turkey hunting with the masses and help others be more successful. Toward that end, Scott has produced lots of tools to help you become a better turkey caller including his DVDs, Mouth Call Magic 1 & 2, and his app, Turkey Tech which is available in the App Store and Google Play. The turkey tech app features how-to videos featuring Scott using both friction and mouth calls, live turkey recordings, and a recording feature that allows you to record your own calling and compare that to the calls of wild turkeys. Ep 26Wisconsin Deer Hunting Report with Jeff Pritzl

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Jeff Pritzl about what can be learned from harvest statistics and hunter trends from the 2021-2022 whitetail deer hunting season. Jeff is the Deer Program Specialist for the State of Wisconsin. Each year, the DNR puts out reports based on harvest data and randomized hunter surveys. The DNR is currently compiling this information for release in March. Early indications point to good harvest numbers despite a slower opening weekend, low numbers of hunting accidents, and some interesting trends regarding hunters’ harvest decisions. Overall, the last three years have been atypical for Wisconsin deer hunting. While there may be some conclusions to be drawn from the data, it’s simply too early to suggest meaningful trends based on the last three seasons. In this episode, Josh and Jeff discuss what can be learned from the data, how the state gauges hunter experience, and how YOU can get involved at the local level with County Deer Advisory Councils. Ep 25Wild Turkey Conservation with Dave Owens

In this week’s episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project about wild turkey conservation. Dave Owens is an avid turkey hunter known for his YouTube channel The Pinhoti Project, which documents his turkey hunts from Maine to Hawaii. While known for targeting longboards, often on public land, Dave has become a leading voice for wild turkey conservation. For a time, wild turkey populations across the country were a massive success story of modern conservation practices. Unfortunately, many states have seen a decline in wild turkey populations over the last two decades. Before state agencies and hunters can begin to address declining populations, there are many questions that must be answered with sound research. Dave has used his platform to raise both awareness and funds for vital wild turkey research projects. While many wild turkey research projects are currently in progress and many more are just getting off the ground, there are many things that the average Joe or Jane can do to help wild turkey populations in the short term. In this episode, Josh and Dave discuss the importance of holding ourselves and state agencies accountable, the responsibility turkey hunters have to advocate for wild turkeys and the places they all home, and how a mindset shift is necessary if the next generation is to enjoy the same opportunities to chase wild turkeys that we have today. Find more from Dave at pinhotiproject.com, on his YouTube channel Dave Owens: the Pinhoti Project, and on Instagram @pinhotiproject. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
