Ep 89Gaining Hunting Permission on New Ground w John Roach
Let's face it, we all need to find access to more hunting land. Your grandma's back 40 could be sold by a family member that doesn't share your passion. One year, your cherished lease might not hold the deer or turkeys you're after. The geese may totally avoid that crop field you've had permission on for years and spend their mornings on the neighbor's field. That public piece you've put so many years into scouting could be gone overnight, sold off or leased up by private parties. Permission on new ground is the only way to guard against these risks. But for many, finding new hunting ground is intimidating. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with John Roach about how John gains hunting permission on new ground. John collects hunting permission like kids used to collect baseball cards. He works hard to find the right places, maintain landowner relationships, and ultimately secure hunting rights on tons of ground with plenty of other permission-asking competition. In this episode, John and Josh discuss how they go about choosing properties to ask permission on, what makes a property stand out, and how they go about gaining permission even when others have been turned away. Ep 88Summer Deer Scouting on Public Land w/ Aaron Warbritton
It’s almost summer! It’s hot, the woods are thick, and the water is calling your name. But for the die-hard whitetail hunter, the work never stops. It’s time to get boots on the ground for some summer scouting! While fighting ticks, thick vegetation and a three-digit heat index may not sound like a lot of fun, summer scouting can set you up for success this fall, especially if you’re covering unfamiliar ground. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Warbritton from The Hunting Public about how he approaches summer scouting. Aaron and the rest of the THP crew literally make a living by taking big bucks in limited time on highly pressured public land. And as you’ll learn from this episode, a lot of their success can be attributed to scouting, specifically, summer scouting. Aaron doesn’t put as much stock into some of the typical summer scouting tactics like glassing ag fields. Instead, he prefers to jump right into the thick of it and try to find where the bucks are bedding, or will be bedding come hunting season. Tune in to hear how Aaron uses summer scouting to put him and the rest of the THP crew on big bucks in the fall. Needless to say, by the time Pierce's turkey season rolled around, he was chomping at the bit! After a couple of unsuccessful outings, Pierce made it happen on his first "real" turkey hunt of the year. Ep 80Planning for Out-of-State Turkey Hunting & Whitetail Scouting Trips w Dan Johnson
Josh's turkey hunting road trip (dare we call it a Turkey Tour!?) begins in less than two weeks! Having added an Iowa tag to the list, Josh reached out to the host of the Nine Finger Chronicles Podcast Dan Johnson to talk about planning for out of state hunting trips and what to expect for Iowa. Dan is no stranger to out of state trips. Each year, Dan hunts a handful of states, including some longer trips out west. With his experience, Dan has a pretty dialed in approach to planning and prepping for hunting trips. So Josh picks Dan's brain about making preparations. The guys also discuss what Josh can expect for an Iowa turkey hunt as far as getting on birds and encountering hunting pressure goes. Josh and Dan also get into scouting for deer on Iowa public land. The sheer amount of sign found in Iowa can be tough for a nonresident to decipher when scouting for whitetails. So Dan shares some advice for helping Josh get started planning his potential 2024 or 2025 Iowa deer hunt. And since both guys are dads, the conversation eventually devolves into ranting about kids, the woes of working from home during spring break, and Dan's new children's book, "The Volcano Dad." Enjoy! Ep 75Scouting for Next Year's Buck Now w/Paul Annear
The next two months are arguably the best time to get in some post-season scouting for whitetails. Antlers are dropping, snow is melting revealing even more sign from last fall, and the woods are as open as they'll be all year. These conditions create a real opportunity for whitetail hunters to maximize their time in the field. Couple these conditions with the fact that bumping deer this time of year will have no impact on your hunting next fall, and post-season scouting is a no brainer. This week on the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with outdoor writer and Wisconsin native Paul Annear about post-season scouting for whitetails. Paul spends tons of time each winter scouting for deer and scooping up shed antlers, putting the pieces together for next year's fall game plan. In this episode, Paul shares a bit about his background, what makes scouting this time of year invaluable, how to read and weigh winter sign, and much more.
