This week I am joined by Dave Seminara who is the author of a book I read called Mad Travelers: A Tale of Wanderlust, Greed and the Quest to Reach the Ends of the Earth. I was absolutely enthralled with his book, so much so I asked Dave to come on the podcast to talk about it. We delve into many subjects such as 'wanderlust', the reasons why we travel, the science behind the urge to not stick to one place for very long, why some people hate travel, the outline of his book, travel during COVID and so many more subjects. The running theme of this conversation is discussing the extreme travel community which Dave's book is based on.I have learnt so much about the extreme travel community and their ambitions to travel to the most far flung places on Earth. We talk about the most isolated island on Earth called Bouvet Island. We also talk about the most isolated inhabited island on Earth called Tristan da Cunha. Welcome to the eighth episode in this Friday series and this week I share my experience of last weekend's trip to Hornby Island which is known as the 'Hawaii' of British Columbia in Canada. Hello and welcome to number 81! This week I am joined by Veena Murali who travelled the world solo this year for 6 months to the most amazing destinations. As a solo female traveller in her early 20s, we get a great insight into what it is like to travel the world in 2022 as that demographic. We delve into the Stans to hear about the nervousness of travelling somewhere where no English is spoken. We learn about the current state of travel in Saudi Arabia for women. Veena tells us about the breathtaking scenery of Argentina How could I not ask Veena about Nepal? So we compare notes on Poon Hill before talking about South East Asia. We finish the main part of the conversation talking about the underrated Georgia in Europe. Welcome to the sixth episode in this Friday series and this week I give my reaction to Elisabeth's episode which made me feel terrible at not speaking another language. Elisabeth can speak six and I reflect heavy on this for myself. I also talk about how to make a plan to travel and putting something in place so you can leave. Another bit of reflection, I stress the need for people develop a skill and job for the laptop so it can prolong the traveling side of your life. I wish I could work on the road! For the rest of this year, I am going to get some YouTube content created which I explain in some detail. With a potentially reunion with Mikey Butlin in Mexico later this who I traveled with for six months in 2013, I talk about how we planned our trip, the rough itinerary and my 22 month trip. Peter's book is fantastic if you want to learn about Greek Mythology and Greece. I learnt a lot about both and it has inspired me to visit Greece even more so, it has always been top of my European destinations to visit but never had the chance to. I also interviewed Dave Seminara for a future episode and we talk about his book Mad Travelers which is about the extreme travel community. This is something new to me and I want to research more. So I talk today about the mentality that I learnt about this group, why they travel to the most remote places on earth and also assess my own travel philosophy. This week I am joined by François-Xavier Paradis-Garneau (Frank) again who talks about his hitchhiking and travel adventures in Egypt, Sudan, China, Taiwan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan + Kazakhstan. Frank travelled to Egypt a few years back and made his way south to Sudan during their political turmoil. He was surprised by the very kind nature of the Sudanese and their hospitality when hitchhiking. We delve into some magic hidden temples in Taiwan. China was his first trip to Asia after Europe and he visited the Tibetan Autonomous region as well as going far west to Xinjiang. We finish off with some chat about travelling 'The Stans' and what each country has going for it. Hello and welcome to number 75! This week I am joined by François-Xavier Paradis-Garneau (Frank) who talks about his hitchhiking adventures in Afghanistan this year and also his experience of hitchhiking in Pakistan either side of his trip to Afghanistan. Frank was one of the first tourists if not the first tourist to visit Afghanistan after the Taliban took back control of the country. Whilst in Pakistan, Frank collaborated with the Taliban to get a tourist visa for Afghanistan and then he extended it three times whilst in the country. We talk about what it is like to travel there by hitchhiking, the endless checkpoints where he is checked for his documents, the amazing hospitality of the local Afghans, his favourite parts of the country and some of the awful roads. You can check out his BBC documentary about it below (there is a story to that in this episode). We then delve into Pakistan where Frank travelled for 6 months. We concentrate on the northern region around Kumrat Valley to the Shandur National Park and as far east as Gilgit. He tells hilarious anecdotes of bouncing off on a polo game, meeting some former royal family, nearly getting hypothermia in Darkut as well as many other tidbits. A super inspirational chat about travelling it its most raw form and we go deep into how friendly the locals are. We recorded this in two sessions, the first half in Pakistan and the second half in Namibia where Frank is at the time of release. Kathleen walked the Camino Frances which is 491 miles from St Jean in France to Santiago de Compostela a few years back. What is inspiring about this journey is that Kathleen lost her husband to Parkinson's Disease and decided to do this walk...in her seventies. Really great stuff! Then we crack on to her experience of travelling solo in India in March 2020, right on the cusp of COVID. She was one of the last people to receive a tourist visa to India before lockdown.
