EJason Manson was a QB at the University of Iowa from 2002-2006. After 15 years away from Iowa City he now returns as the Director of Player Development. The Director of Player Development serves as a guide for student-athletes as they transition from high school to college, supporting their academic and football successes while creating a positive and memorable college experience.Manson has been involved in high school administration and coaching since the end of his Hawkeye playing career. He has held the position of assistant Dean of Students and head football coach at St. Thomas More School the last two years. In 2018-19 he served as student management assistant at Greater Hartford (Conn.) Academy of the Arts and head football coach at Capital Prep.Manson, a native of Bloomfield, Conn., was the head football coach at Capital Preparatory Magnet School from 2014-18, while also serving as director of college and career readiness. He also served as a position coach at Central Connecticut State University from 2010-14, instructor and offensive coordinator at Milford Academy in 2008-09, wide receivers coach at Becker College in 2007 and Western Connecticut State.As a player at Iowa, Manson lettered in 2005 and 2006, playing both quarterback and wide receiver. His career totals include completing 42-85 pass attempts for 442 yards and one touchdown. He had 22 career rushing attempts for 93 yards and three pass receptions for 22 yards. Manson led Iowa to a double-overtime win at Syracuse in 2006 in his only start at quarterback.We talk about his transition back into the program, the things that have changed and the things that have stayed the same, and the fast paced environment of D1 football. After going being under recruited, he found his way to Iowa City and it turns out to be a fascinating story that Kevin tells. He eventually made his way into an impact role for the Hawkeyes, then beat the odds again in making multiple NFL teams and even winning a Superbowl with Tom Brady and the Patriots in 2004. Now he lives in PHX, AZ with his wife and 3 kids, all who have inherited some of Kevin's insane genetics, and even more importantly his elite work ethic and mindset which becomes ever so clear the reason for his long list of life successes. After early success on the baseball field in his youth, Jon found his talent and size to be pretty useful in Football as well, and he amassed offers from Northern Illinois, Kansas St, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa. After choosing Iowa City as the place to spend his next 4 years he dealt with injury in the spring our his freshman year that was a contributing factor in finding it difficult to see playing time. He talks about what it was like being in the room with guys like Hamilton, Kreiger-Coble, Fiedorowicz, Kittle, Hockenson, Fant, and others and the challenge of the Tight End position amongst that group. We discuss the topic of identity relating back to episode 228(28) and how he went through a rough patch while still playing the game, and how his Faith guided him and gave him an anchor in life. EMatt is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was part of the 2014 recruiting class for the Iowa Hawkeyes. With his 6'8 frame and exceptional mental ability to understand the game and schemes, Matt found his way on to the field early in Iowa City as a redshirt freshman D-lineman. After 4 years of playing time in the Black and Gold Matt now finds himself as part of the Detroit Lions in the NFL, but on the opposite side of the ball. Making a transition that is rarely made from college to pro has left Matt with quite the story to tell about learning Offensive Tackle, adding more weight to his already large frame, a custom training plan to morph his athleticism and movement to that of the O-line, and a fight to make the 53 man team. We talk about all of that including, what it was like to be excelling off the field as well as he was passing the MCATs, pursuing medical school, getting married, and a whole lot more. EMark is from Buffalo Grove, Illinois. After enrolling in the Air Force Academy in 2010 he quickly decided that it wasn't the path for him and he decided to pursue walking on to the University of Iowa Football team. That turned into a great decision as Mark established himself as an extremely hard worker and great team leader off the field, as well as becoming a the feature running back due to injury problems on the team. Mark gave the NFL a run but ultimately made a decision to retire from football and he talks about how the compounding effect of playing Fullback eventually took its toll. He then took a medical sales job where after 7 short months he decided to find his way back to the Iowa weight room as an intern for Coach Chris Doyle and the Iowa Strength Staff. After completing internship a full time opening became available and Mark stepped into an official coaching position. He took a job as Head Strength coach at Southeast Missouri St. for one year before again realizing that he wanted to move a different direction. He found early playing time as an athletic special teamer and played in over 40 games in the Black and Gold. EDalles is from Palo, Iowa just northwest of Cedar Rapids. Like many Iowa football players, Coach Reese Morgan was the recruiting connection from high school to the next level, and after Coach recognized Dalles while recruiting fellow Hawkeye Shaun Beyer, Dalles turned down multiple next level track and field opportunities to walk on and play football for the Hawkeyes. Dalles talks about living his dream in the black and gold, fighting through a crazy off season that was 2020, and relives his favorite memories as a hawk. Dalles became a viral sensation with his singing ability as well in the summer of 2019 when his original song 'We Wave', a piece about the Iowa childrens hospital and waving tradition, blew up on facebook. The video has totaled over a million views and sent Dalles into a new path that he is continuing post athlete career.
