Ep 70No Means Why & How Do I?

E

E70: No Means Why & How We all hear no everyday but it’s how we perceive that answer and response with actions that defines who achieves and who doesn’t. You can’t make a living doing that, you can’t get a loan for that, you can’t afford it, you can’t ever live that way……. When I hear no I am thinking about WHY they are saying it and HOW I will get around it to continue on my mission. Let’s talk about the different and sometimes secret ways people say no to us in our creative living journeys. No and yes never mean what we think when we analyze why they are being said and how we can move forward. In This Episode We Cover No doesn’t mean no, ask why, figure out how Friends and family judgement taken in Network Speaking with others that do what you do often No and Yes are circumstantial, these are arbitrary How can you do it? Why did someone or something say No? The why is important You will always hear no Mentors aren’t always right Good mentors challenge you but don’t stop you Quotes “ When someone says no it’s almost like an immediately how am I going to do this, like they didn't’ say anything. When someone builds a little damn in the river its going to pull off in different streams until it goes where it’s going to go, it’s going to go there.” - Host Dave Swillum “ In real life we know that there are thousands and thousands of people doing it in real life, but if we don’t go out and meet any of them it feels like its a TV show and isn’t possible. We need to network.” - Host Dave Swillum “You don’t need anything to start anything.” - Host Dave Swillum Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Merch To Support Us! https://wakeup.itemorder.com/sale?fbclid=IwAR30nyVXdpFaax0mN0CRcC_mVjNzafbMo0spds82eoG-GMo01HG6Uq0dvzw Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

Ep 66What’s Your American Dream? Alternative Living As Your First Home W/ Dave Swillum

E

E66: What’s Your American Dream? Alternative Living Starter Home W/ Dave Swillum What is your American Dream? For many it feels like your first home but for even more it is the way they want to live their life in every aspect. In today’s time it isn’t that it is less enjoyable to own a home, it’s just that it can be challenging to own a traditional first home and NOT go down the path of working a 9 - 5 to keep up with the overhead. Many bail from their dream because their overhead keeps an uphill battle going forward and doesn’t provide the cover fire to get started. I want to talk about what your true goal is, if it is to buy a single family home and you like your job then that’s great! Super obtainable. But if your goal is more than that in this episode I talk on ways to live alternatively or change the perception of what your “starter” home looks like to come up with ways to minimize overhead, invest in assets that generate income or give yourself the cover fire to open a business or focus on creative. This is from hearing conversations of friends buying after wanting to talk to myself 6 years ago about something no one told me. What is your dream and what are you doing about it? Do they align with getting it done or is it a short term win that could look like something else to become a catalyst toward your goal? In This Episode We Cover What is your American Dream? What is the goal and what’s the actual goal? Buying your first home Killing your overhead Alternative living and housing What are you trying to do? What does that look like every day? Reverse engineer Don’t build a mountain to climb Quotes “ My priority for me is my way of life and how long do I get to have it?” - Host Dave Swillum “ Don’t get distracted because it feels like the goal and it feels good for the mean time for jeopardizing something that could be a long term goal for you.” - Host Dave Swillum “ The businesses that have the most leverage and the least overhead that they have to battle are the most likely to succeed for the longest, because you have time to react appropriately and not act through fear.” - Host Dave Swillum Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

Ep 64Running Your First Marathon W/ Dave Swillum

E

E64: This year I decided one of my 2020 goals was to run my first marathon. I scheduled the earliest one I could find in NH and booked it without knowing how I would train to get myself there never running more than 3 miles. COVID hit and canceled my marathon until next year but I wrote the goal this year. I decided to run it with my friend Nadine who has been helping me train from the beginning and we made it happen running from Portsmouth, NH to Wells, ME. We were pumped to raise about 2k for charities and was able to prove to myself that when I am passionate about a goal and set a date I will find out how it’s going to happen in the given amount of time no matter what. I don’t think a marathon is for everyone and encourage you to find what that is for you. But I think everyone can benefit from training or working towards something that SEEMS impossible but once it’s set you figure out how it WILL happen. Let’s talk on E64 In This Episode We Cover What is it like to train for a marathon? How can training help me? Year goals Set a date, make it happen Getting rid of bad energy Mental health Accountability Trust your gut! If you want it, you can have it, think therefore I am Stretch goal Give yourself the win Quotes “If I wrote something down as a goal, it’s happening.” - Dave Swillum “Sometimes you have no idea how something is possible at all, but you have to actually know it’s going to happen. Not in a way where you doubt yourself saying it’s going to happen, but in a way where your gut trusts its possible even if you don’t know how yet.” - Dave Swillum Dave’s Recommended Book Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill https://amzn.to/2YO9UdX Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

E

E62: Welcome back! This week is another podcast cross pollination! We speak with Laura Harper Lake of Artful Harper Studios and Creative Gut’s Podcast. Today we talk on doing multiple creatives and interests and what that means. We speak on the meaning behind having creative guts and needing to do what you are meant to do in those means. Lot’s of goodies in this episode for any creative looking to do what they love around the clock and maybe being too much like Laura in I doing 1 million things at once because you love to. If I’m the best audio engineer in the entire planet but I can’t relate or get the emotion out of an artist, or work with them to get the right thing then does it matter?” - Host Dave Swillum Laura Harper Lake & The Creative Gut’s Podcast Links Artful Harper Studios https://www.artfulharperstudios.com/ IG @artfulharper Creative Gut’s Podcast Website https://www.creativegutspodcast.com/ IG @creativegutspodcast Laura’s Recommended Resources Loish (Artist that inspires Laura) IG @Loisvb RPM Challenge https://www.rpmchallenge.com/ Stay Work Play NH https://stayworkplay.org/ Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

Ep 61Where Business & Creative Collides: How Bad Do YOU Want It & Why W/ Sean Giovanni of The Record Shop

E

E61: Welcome back to the podcast! This week Dave connects with sonic story teller Sean Giovanni aka Giovanni aka Gio. Sean is the founder of The Record Shop in Nashville, TN and has worked with artists like John Legend, Big & Rich, Tim McGraw, Zakk Wylde, The Wallflowers, and Juicy J. If you aren’t an audio nerd like Dave no problem. The guys go deep into the intersection of business and creative and how to manage it. Sean brings great info on managing a schedule, getting clear on your why and putting steps in to place to do it. We discuss not distracting while not ruling out opportunity and some of the goods and bads behind being a creative and how to make them work for you. In This Episode We Cover Making a living writing and recording music Making decisions young The process The value of a relationship over just a network Bring value, support each other If there aren’t extra positions, it doesn’t mean there isn’t opportunity Creatives Can do a lot, but SHOULD they do it all? Don’t diversify just because you can How bad do you want to be successful? Quotes “ The really great opportunities started to come when I was able to clearly articulate what it was that I intended for my career, what I was going after, and what my skill sets were. Initially when I was starting to apply for internships or jobs one of the big reasons why I didn’t get a lot of responses back was because I sent the same email to that studio manager that dozens did everyday.” - Sean Giovanni “ We’re not supposed to be the person that’s just willing to do everything even though YOU SHOULD be willing to do everything, you don’t want to lead with that.” - Sean Giovanni “Don’t follow the money and do things that are a revenue stream that you see opportunity for money in. Anyone in that headspace of an entrepreneur or creative has that ability to create new ways thats what we are good at but if you do it and follow it you may find yourself in a spot where it’s really hard to do the right things because your heart isn’t in it. If you go all in on what you love in a smart way there is a way to make money there and you will stay your authentic self in the space.” - Host Dave Swillum Sean Giovanni & The Record Shop Links & Resources Sean’s Links www.therecordshopnashville.com IG @therecordshop FB @therecordshopstudios Business Creative Help From Sean www.mindmaptribe.com Seans Recommended Resources For Everyone By Jason Reynolds https://amzn.to/3f5ohQi The War of Art https://amzn.to/3dOK66u Think and Grow Rich By Napoleon Hill https://amzn.to/2AecujC Fearless Motivation Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6EF56fuiUgN2GOMVZIiXpq Speakers Sean Loves! Ep 59Online Music Festivals Keeping The Scene W/ Granite State Online Music Festival's Curtis Arnett

E

E59: Every community has worked to find it’s own way to keep connected, keeping creating, and keep supporting each other through these times. The music industry certainly isn’t any different. Ep 57You're Fired! What To Do When Or If It Happens W/ Dave & Ryan

E

E57: You're Fired! What To Do When Or If It Happens W/ Dave & Ryan Many people are hurting out there, losing their jobs, losing their pay, and even losing everything. I wanted to share my story of getting fired to give some hope, tips, and stories that might help some people feel better when or if it happens to know what to expect. We usually don’t plan to get fired, and if your anything like me it’s never happened before and I was honestly surprised I was ever in a situation where it could happen but it did. I’m happy and proud that it happened so much so that I framed the termination letter and have it on the wall behind my mixing desk to remind me everyday. Here’s the story and what I learned from the experience. Remember: Nothing is permanent or guaranteed Everyone can and will lose sometimes No one is owed anything Everything happens for a reason. In This Episode We Cover Unrealistic expectations Unexpected pay decreases Surviving toxic work places What it’s like to get fired Mindset Plans change Reacting Relief vs the situation Stages of anxiety and expectations Routine Unemployable Quotes “I started waking up at the same time and putting on a full suit so I felt like what I was doing was important and I had structure to it. I had to sit there and do shit, because I had to.” - Host Dave Swillum “That low of things I had never experienced before has made it so now I absolutely love and appreciate everything in my life.” - Host Dave Swillum “I’m unemployable in some ways.” - Host Dave Swillum Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

What I can control is putting myself out there.” - Sullybop “It’s easier to figure out the money than the happiness, you can go get a high paying job and find the money, you can read a million books and never find happiness. I follow the happiness.” - Sullybop “I turned down the job that kids go to school for and do internships for, I quite.” - Sullybop “ I’ve got an indie rock band I’m not on there talking about economics, and how to survive in business, and cash flow or creating a living or something. Ep 52How Did You Get Started In Your Passion? W/ Simon Pellett & Dave

E

E52: We’ve spent the last couple episodes talking serious action and changes in the economy and business so we wanted to take an opportunity and get back to some more relaxed content with a familiar face. Dave and Simon from the “Music On Your Own Terms” podcast talk how they got into music and their takes on influence, change, starting out, new ways to look at music, and ultimately the way behind whey they formed their lives around music. For those that don’t know Simon or his podcast yet we spoke with him on E19 on the podcast about how music has helped him get through mental health challenges and start his podcast in the space. Everyone has a WHY behind the WHAT they do. Shut the news off for a few and think about why you got into what you love and why you need it in the first place. In This Episode We Cover How did get into your passion? Why got you into what your doing? Why do you do what you do? I think my attention span and my aggressiveness was drawn to that.” - Host Dave Swillum “ Your not gonna be playing that in school, your gonna be better off learning what you want rather than what’s dictated by the program.” - Simon Pellett “ That really pushed the extrovert out of me because everyone looks at you in that role, so I really had to get out of my shell.” - Host Dave Swillum Simon’s Recommended Resources How To Make It In The New Music Industry By Ari Herstand https://amzn.to/2RdVK1v Start With Why By Simon Sinek https://amzn.to/2V8898l One Minute Manager By William Morrow https://amzn.to/2V4Xqv9 Waiting For The Punch: Words To Live By WTF Podcast https://amzn.to/39Kcunl Simon & Music On Your Own Terms Podcast Links Website www.musiconyourownterms.com Facebook Page facebook.com/musiconyourownterms IG @metaldoggie Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

Ep 49Social Anxiety, Shyness, & Using Your Personality As A Tool W/ Mark Metry

E

E49: Everyone can be shy sometimes or have anxieties about social environments. Shyness or being an introvert is perfectly fine but we need to find ways to make sure the characteristics benefit us instead of prohibit us from growth. I see a lot of creatives with mental health problems and honestly sometimes that helps us create our best art but can often give us trouble too. Some of the most creative times in my life that I’ve written my best songs, produced the best content, or been the most real have been when I’ve been in pain or facing anxieties but it’s always something to work on and control for the better not allowing it to control us. Today we speak to Ted X speaker, host of the Humans 2.0 Podcast, and newly created author of “Screw Being Shy” Mark Metry who I met at a conference a few months back in Lowell seeing him speak on this. We talk through seeing your own type and creating a path to use the way you are and work on things you need help with. In This Episode We Cover Your not the only one that feels like you do Talking about it Using shyness or your personality for strength Facing fear How most experience it Awareness Different forms of anxiety Science based approach People uses vice’s to drown out the voice Band Aid Solutions American diet feeding anxiety Chemical behavior Modern work life over evolution of human behavior Quotes “ It’s totally fine to be an introvert and to be quite, but if your shy and you can’t really be yourself in front of other people that’s going to put up boundaries in your life.” - Mark Metry “ When your mind get’s stretched like that you can’t ever go back so the only other way is to drown out the voice.” - Mark Metry “Your mind either exists in the present or the past.” - Co-Host Ryan Carrigan Mark’s Links Website www.markmetry.com Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/ Mark’s Podcast Humans 2.0 https://www.markmetry.com/humans-2-0-podcast Mark’s Recommended Resources Marks Book “Screw Being Shy” https://amzn.to/2QkbFL3 Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com

Ep 48Using Business For Your Band W/ James Cross of the Better Band Bureau Podcast

E

E48 Why should a band use business characteristics? Check out this conversation between host Dave Swillum and James Cross from the Better Band Bureau Podcast. Starting off in local radio James got into audio and working with music. He went on to work on Van’s Warped Tour for three tours working in merchandise and sponsorship and now runs a recording studio in VT. Between Dave’s experience playing and touring with rock and hardcore bands in New England and James experience in the industry in multiple roles we really lay out a conversation about why and how to integrate business into your band or art. In This Episode We Cover Why treat a band like a business? Results How much to spend/why? Marketing your band What bands does this work for? Hobby vs. non-action What’s your role in the band? Ep 47Releasing Creative Frequently or to "Perfection" What's Better?

E47: Solo episode today, super digestible and quick. Today we talk about something I see in myself and others everyday. As creators whether you make music, art, run a business, or create content there is always a battle between releasing content consistently verses slowly but “perfect”. If your a perfectionist, great….but perfection is the enemy of creating. Art isn’t perfect, and to make great art you need to make it A LOT. Create and release consistently and make it as perfect as you can in the timeframe you set. We can’t get feedback or be what we want if we aren’t doing and showing what we do. Let’s dive into some of the rational and irrational ways we look at how often we release our ideas. In This Episode We Cover Lots of creative or perfect creative? What is perfect? Quality vs. Quantity….or both….or neither Timeline for sending it People can engage more when you give more Art isn’t perfect, humans aren’t perfect Keeping emotion and candid in creative Imposter syndrome Get it out quicker, you will always get better Your output is better when you act and do frequently Learn by doing Quotes “ If we aren’t releasing things we can’t have engaged fans, and if we are making something too perfect sometimes it’s not what we should be making” - Host Dave Swillum “There were some excuses that I had….but not enough to compensate for four years of not releasing stuff.” - Host Dave Swillum “The market will tell you if it’s bad, you don’t have to be the judge of it” - Host Dave Swillum Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromworkI Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channe lhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com

Ep 43Generating Sales From Your Creative W/ Stephanie of Growth Disrupt

E43 There are a lot of amazing attributes that I’ve seen in creatives meeting new people everyday but one common weakness and fear I’ve seen is being afraid to commit to sales to grow your creative business. One common feeling and thing I hear is “I don’t want to sell out” or “If it’s good art they will come and support it”. While I agree that you shouldn’t make all your decisions as a creative only oriented at popularity and I don’t think you should turn your love into a hate I do always advocate for artists to learn to be forward with creating opportunities for themselves by finding people that like what they do and showing them what you do in some way to meet that need. Maybe your going to events and meeting people, talk on facebook groups, calling people that don’t know about what you can do to help them, messaging or emailing out. Everyone introvert and extravert, artist or not has an opportunity to create opportunity by connecting with people that are in need of what they do and showing them the value in how YOU personally solve the issue. Let’s talk with Stephanie from Grow Disrupt in San Antonia, TX about transforming your small creative business into a growth machine that sustains success and income. In This Episode We Cover Starting sales Sales for creatives Grind time, How long? Working while working Problem solving Starting change Not selling out but selling your product/service Energy v time shortages Burnout from pushing Small things that mean a lo Quotes “ Do not screw with your sales reps commission checks, because if you do six years later they will be on a stage talking about you!” - Stephanie Grow Disrupt “ You may outgrow those guys, your friends. Your interests, your conversations are going to change from what theirs are.” - Stephanie Grow Disrupt “ I have band practice once a week on Wednesdays. The reason why I got into audio is because of music and I knew if I didn’t keep that in my life then I would lose all reason why I do what I do. When I practice on Wednesday I lose that time and I need the time. To take that time away it needs to be valuable but taking that time renews my energy. “ - Host Dave Swillum Stephanie’s Links Website https://www.growdisrupt.com/ Facebook Success Steph Stephanie’s Recommended Resources Mike Michalowicz www.mikemotorbike.com Profit First https://amzn.to/2GLWtB4 Clockwork https://amzn.to/2GZCr6B Pumpkin Plan https://amzn.to/2RP6kN4 The Introverts Edge By Matthew Owen https://amzn.to/2OkQ6sU Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com

Ep 42Managing Income From Your Creative. What Does Money Mean? W/ Dave & Ryan

E42 As creatives we usually HATE talking money. Unfortunately if you want to do what you love full time you often need to find a way to get an income from it and more importantly manage it in a way you can be educated on the next decisions you need to make. Today we talk about using tools to see cash flow, the meaning of money, the different stages of income when starting a business and how to balance and keep track of it. Money doesn’t have to be a bad thing but it does have to be understood in order for it to serve you, your creative, and your community. In This Episode We Cover When do you claim taxes? When should you register? How do you manage money? Understanding your creative income Informed decisions The numbers don’t lie Hobby V Business? Starting with any project and getting narrow Healthy idea of money Starting business for the right reason Quotes “ When you get busy and do projects that don’t make sense it’s like your trying to juggle and you have one shitty ball” Host Dave Swillum “ The saddest thing I’ve seen is creating a business you don’t enjoy. It’s likeYou just did all this to get yourself out of the rat race so you could create a business you don’t like which is just a race as another animal, why bother?” Host Dave Swillum “ Looking at the numbers yeah it sucks but when I do this good things come out of it.” Co-Host Ryan Carrigan Dave’s Resources Free accounting tool I use for now Wave Accounting https://www.waveapps.com/ Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com

The boys chat with Simon James AKA Seamonster a graphic designer and artist from Maine. We speak to Simon about his fresh jump into business and his perspective driven from monetary and life challenges. Managing your day when all the time is controlled by you and staying disciplined, getting out of hard financial situations, and taking on your day to day creative business. In This Episode We Cover When you jump Discipline and daily schedule Losing your job Living off low income What’s worth the money? Enjoying the small things Bouncing back on a budget Starting cheap or free Creating demand and control Foot in with Non-profits Fitness helps business Putting ideas to action What’s your weakness as a operator? Physical properties that put you in different state Taking in influence from day jobs Quotes “ That day that I decided to submit all this paperwork and money on two businesses was another day just like any other” Simon James “ I personally believe everyone in America should have two 20 hour jobs instead of a full time job because everyone burns out. Having your hands in multiple pots” Simon James “ You can’t tackle every problem that you have and everything you have to address in just one day, there’s not enough time in the day to do it. So don’t worry about everything you need to do in THAT DAY, but be aware of everything that has to be done. Keeping structure when you have that much freedom is key, you can’t just not do anything or your screwed.” Host Dave Swillum “It’s your mind or your money right now that dictate when is the time and if one of those is sour it needs to be fixed” Host Dave Swillum “If you act casual then your day will be casual, and what you get done that day will be casual” Host Dave Swillum Simon’s Links Website Simon’s Interior Painting Company https://www.happyinteriors.me/ Facebook Art By Seamonster Instagram @theseamonster207 Simon’s Recommended Resources The Happiness Lab Podcast he digs https://www.happinesslab.fm/ How I Built This Podcast https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510313/how-i-built-this Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com

Ep 40Don't Quit Your Day Job Kid! Yet... W/ Dave & Ryan

E40 Everyone has told you never to quit your day job, we’ve always told you TO quit it……today we aren’t. Ok let’s back track. We really want you to when it makes sense but we want you to set up your jump for a long term win and marathon win over a short term feeling of fulfillment that isn’t backed by strong risk mitigation. Hear how Dave and Ryan have set their year up with day jobs to use the funds and time to attack their creative careers. We dive into the thoughts and feelings behind why people jump too early or too late from their day job and how it can best serve you. EVERYONE is in a different unique situation and only you can know what is serving you and your mission and WHEN it makes sense. Let’s talk it out, feel better about they WHY behind our choices, and see how we can make our day job serve our business and creative lives. In This Episode We Cover Does your day job serve you? When to jump? Why you should keep it Why you shouldn’t Ways it can play out Using your resources What’s in your way and what are YOU doing about it? Why it’s important to time it right Preparing Actions vs. planning and the delta The plan Dave and Ryan’s new planning for 2020 Quotes “ I want to be invincible. I want to still do the jump, but I want it to be as small as possible. I don’t want to be knocked out on the first punch, I want three to six months of curve balls that I can’t expect and being able to survive through them. It’s about what can I do to eat more shit, put my head down, and get to that spot?” Host Dave Swillum “When we say plan, I’m not talking 2020 resolution, what is the plan? What are you going to being doing during the day? What’s an actual day to day look like?” Co-host Ryan Carrigan “ Doing things to set yourself up for a long term win. I’m not in this to just make nothing, not support my family, and feel bad about shit. I want to create things that are creating income without me being there only. I need to create businesses and assets that aren’t a 1:1 ratio, I want to die 100 doing what I love not 5 years of fire then burn out quick.” - Host Dave Swillum Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email [email protected] Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com

Zach Zyla is a freelance audio engineer working out of Manchester, NH after going to school for audio. In this episode we talk about how important networking is and how to do it in a meaningful way so it truly makes you and others connect in life rather than just for perks and benefits. We talk about measuring your business after having no boss to tell you how your doing and building relationships. It’s a smaller world than we give it credit for and thats definitely true in music too. In This Episode We Cover Content release strategy for artists Building a community Answering the audience Bridging the creative gap Releasing music in the modern day Measuring your performance yourself NETWORKING Relationship building Quotes “ You can’t be a shark in the water, I don’t come up to people and be like we’re gonna be friends and your gonna pay me. We’re gonna connect and if something happens cool, if it doesn’t whatever.” - Zach Zyla “ I’m not shitting on 9 to 5 if you are advertently happy doing that, go do that every single day. It’s starting to be a big issue in our time because of debt to income ratio in our generation. You spent a lot of time working, if your doing something that you don’t like to do then……sometimes you spend more time doing it more than seeing my wife, friends, or family….there needs to be a real good reason for me to be doing that time away from them.” - Host Dave Swillum “I never really wanted to connect with a million people, but now I’m at this point in my life where I’ll shake anybodies hand, like lets be friends. Worst case they’re a photographer and we don’t cross paths and never meet up again but best case I need a photographer or a band needs one and we connect and collaborate. Ep 23To College Or Not To College? Choices Made & How It Plays Out W/ Dave & Ryan

As the world becomes an increasingly technological place the way we live our lives change with it. Whether it be how your job changes or becoming fluent in new skills whilst progressing a career, forward progress is always necessary. With this progress comes a fundamental block in the construction of a successful life; Education. In this episode, the guy's do their first solo episode where they tackle an important question that hits close to home for everyone. Do you need to go to college? Join the guys as they dissect this increasingly complicated and layered question as they discuss pre-college behavior, the climate of colleges in the present day, self-teaching, and the massive investment a modern education can be. Thank you for joining us on the first solo episode! In this episode we cover -What is important about college? - ROI of your degree, thinking about the real cost -The state of technology and it's impact on education -The importance of continued growth of skills -Do you even need a degree for your interest? -Can you afford education and how do you go about it? Quotes “ Now so many industries that exist that never existed for all of these parents, friends, and mentors to give context for “I want to sell sneakers on instagram'' “I want to be a youtuber and getting licensing income to make makeup tutorials” That was never possible before. I feel like a lot of advice and things we look for to make those decisions at that age are not aligned with the current abilities of internet coming to scale.” - Host Dave Swillum “ Looking at my current situation and what I’m pursuing now, did I really need to go to go to college? I would say yes. You can fall into the near sighted trap of not thinking of your degree as worth anything because your not using it in your related field at the moment. It’s about a self growth mindset and a process of putting yourself through something that is so rigorous and so intense that it forces you to change as a person and forces you to grow. It cultivates fundamentally important life skills that I feel people lose sight of. - Co-Host Ryan Carrigan “The science shows in the psych field that money can buy you happiness in so far as it keeps the debt collectors away. Meaning happiness is correlated with you make enough money for lack of discomfort. You are only so happy with money to the point when your not being pestered by lack of it then it plateaus. Once you reach a certain point you can have one billion dollars and it doesn’t make you any happier.” - Co-Host Ryan Carrigan “Take what you can out of literally everything. We will say it as it is, you do not need to go to college. Also you do not need to go to school for something that will make you look socially acceptable. Also you need to think too, if your spending umteen thousand dollars and your going to school for a $200,000 english degree…...I’m not knocking english, I’m just saying sorry dude...your return on investment. You need to look at holistically. I wish I was more involved with my student loan process when I was younger.” Co-Host Ryan Carrigan “Whatever it is that your going to do, do it well.” Co-Host Ryan Carrigan Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Instagram/Twitter @davewakeup Facebook www.facebook.com/wakingupfromwork Email [email protected] Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber Dave’s audio business www.crawlspaceaudio.com
