From Shiftin’ Gears to Shifting Lives & Sharing Meals: How Paso Serves Its Community for Thanksgiving
Every Thanksgiving in Paso Robles, something extraordinary happens long before most people sit down to eat. Centennial Park transforms into a full-service restaurant complete with hosts, servers, menus, and real plates for anyone who needs a warm, dignified meal. No judgment. No questions. Just hospitality, humanity, and a whole lot of turkey. On this episode of Up+Adam, Adam Montiel welcomes two community pillars: David Kudija, who has been carving turkeys and leading the steering committee for decades, and Jimmy Purdy, local business owner and host of Gearhead Radio on KPRL. Together, they help anchor an effort that now serves over 1,500 meals every year. What started with one woman, Mildred Wilkins, her pots and pans, and a simple belief that "The Lord will provide", has grown into one of the most beautiful grassroots traditions on the Central Coast. We talk about legacy, leadership, service, and the deeper meaning of Thanksgiving. Plus, Jimmy shares what it is like running an auto repair shop that puts values first and why showing up for your team and your town matters more than ever.Want to support, volunteer, or order delivery if immobile for Thanksgiving for Paso Robles? https://thanksgivingforpasorobles.comLearn more about Jimmy and his business: https://www.shiftngears805.comListen to Jimmy on Gearhead Radio: KPRL AM 1230 | Saturdays********Listen to Up+Adam with Adam Montiel:Official Website: adammontiel.comApple Podcasts: Up+Adam on Apple PodcastsSpotify: Up+Adam on SpotifyiHeartRadio: Up+Adam on iHeartRadioYouTube Music: Up+Adam on YouTube Music********LEARN MORE ABOUT BREAKING & ENTERING CHRISTMAS HERE!CHECK OUT OUR WOODS HUMANE PET OF THE WEEK!********ADAM’S TEDX VIDEO IS HERE!********FOLLOW ADAM ON INSTAGRAM*********Sincere Thanks to the current supporters of Up + Adam. Jingle Jam, Surf and Storms and Saving Thanksgiving
In this episode of Up+Adam:Breaking & Entering Jingle Jam lineup and details for December 11 in downtown SLOA deeper look at LA’s Palisades Fire and the questions still hanging over itPismo Beach’s Surfing for Hope Longboard Classic and how it supports local cancer patientsNipomo’s new bronze memorial honoring the real "Migrant Mother" and her storyCentral Coast rain outlook to start the weekThanksgiving timing tips, stomach saves, and how not to be the problem at dinner This one is a full holiday plate. Adam kicks things off with breaking news on this year’s Breaking & Entering Jingle Jam, happening Thursday, December 11 at Libertine Brewing in downtown San Luis Obispo. He walks through the lineup so far - Damon Castillo Band, KB of IMVA, Dan Curcio of Moonshiner Collective, Josh Rosenblum, Jon Millsap, Michael Venia of Carbon City Lights, and Brianna Lee and Josh Barrett from B and the Hive - and how the night ties into making Christmas magical for a local family who really needs it.From there, we hit a run of Lofi Headlines that start heavy and land right here at home. Adam breaks down new scrutiny over how the most destructive fire in Los Angeles history really started and whether it could have been stopped days earlier. Then it is straight to the pier as top longboard surfers roll into Pismo for the Surfing for Hope Longboard Classic, chasing World Surf League spots and raising money for local families fighting cancer, with Adam talking about why this crew is so close to his heart. We wrap that block in Nipomo, where the community just unveiled a bronze memorial to Florence Owens Thompson, the woman in Dorothea Lange’s famous "Migrant Mother" photo, and what it means to literally anchor that story in local soil.Because it is that kind of week on the Central Coast, Adam also runs through your rain pattern for the next few days so you know when you are dodging showers and when you might actually see the sun. Then we get into Thanksgiving damage control: when to actually serve the meal if you want to sleep that night, why skipping breakfast backfires, and a rapid fire list of "do not be that person" moves at dinner. From showing up empty handed and hovering in the kitchen to serving lukewarm sides and running out of wine, this episode gives you a cheat sheet for keeping the food hot, the vibes warm, and the group text calm.********Listen to Up+Adam with Adam Montiel:Official Website: adammontiel.comApple Podcasts: Up+Adam on Apple PodcastsSpotify: Up+Adam on SpotifyiHeartRadio: Up+Adam on iHeartRadioYouTube Music: Up+Adam on YouTube Music********CHECK OUT OUR WOODS HUMANE PET OF THE WEEK!********ADAM’S TEDX VIDEO IS HERE!********FOLLOW ADAM ON INSTAGRAM*********Sincere Thanks to the current supporters of Up + Adam. Veterans Day: The Last Watch - Dick Grantham’s Final Story
Happy Veterans Day!Met Richard “Dick” Grantham in 2021 when I hosted a Veterans dinner at the Elks. He stood up, shared his WWII story, and left the whole room in awe. He served in the Navy, survived some of the fiercest battles in the Pacific, and was awarded a Purple Heart after a kamikaze strike hit his ship.Nearly a year later, his daughter reached out. Dick was home, frail, and in hospice care, but wanted to sit down with me and tell his story in full. I spent over an hour with him at his kitchen table. His voice was weak, but his memory was sharp. We talked, we laughed, we cried.A few hours after I left, I got a text:“My dad went to heaven to be with my mom. He loved you.”I’ll never forget it. On his final day, he chose to share that time with me, and I’m forever honored.Today on Up+Adam, I’m sharing that interview again with new reflections so his story, his bravery, and his voice can continue to be heard.********Listen to Up+Adam with Adam Montiel:Official Website: adammontiel.comApple Podcasts: Up+Adam on Apple PodcastsSpotify: Up+Adam on SpotifyiHeartRadio: Up+Adam on iHeartRadioYouTube Music: Up+Adam on YouTube Music********CHECK OUT OUR WOODS HUMANE PET OF THE WEEK!********ADAM’S TEDX VIDEO IS HERE!********FOLLOW ADAM ON INSTAGRAM*********Sincere Thanks to the current supporters of Up + Adam. Delta Force to Bestseller: The Gray Zone Is Real. Brad Taylor’s Been There. #TrueCrimeTuesday
Delta Force to Bestseller: The Brad Taylor DebriefIn this episode of Up+Adam, we step into the shadows with Brad Taylor, former Delta Force commander and New York Times bestselling author whose thrillers hit harder because they come from real-world experience. With 21 years in the Army, including eight inside the elite and secretive 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta, Brad knows exactly how modern conflict moves… quietly, strategically, and often without headlines. His newest novel Into the Gray Zone drops us into modern-day India (pretty damn timely if you ask me), where a lavish wedding turns into a targeted massacre and where terrorism might actually be a high-level play for economic dominance. Through Pike Logan, the relentless Taskforce operator at the heart of the series, we’re pulled through cyber sabotage, rare earth conflicts, and the dark politics of separatism. This is where war lives now…in the space between diplomacy and disaster. We talk about the origin of Pike, the real stories behind Brad’s fiction, and how close we really are to the chaos his novels predict. Spoiler: closer than you think.Into the Gray Zone is out now:bradtaylorbooks.comBuy the book on Amazon********Listen to Up+Adam with Adam Montiel:Official Website: adammontiel.comApple Podcasts: Up+Adam on Apple PodcastsSpotify: Up+Adam on SpotifyiHeartRadio: Up+Adam on iHeartRadioYouTube Music: Up+Adam on YouTube Music********CHECK OUT OUR WOODS HUMANE PET OF THE WEEK!********ADAM’S TEDX VIDEO IS HERE!********FOLLOW ADAM ON INSTAGRAM*********Sincere Thanks to the current supporters of Up + Adam.
